GIMP :: Cut Or Clear Function With Photos?
Jan 13, 2012
When I use the Cut or Clear function with a graphic design I can punch a hole right through a layer or layers. But with a jpeg photo and duplicate layers all I get is that the selected area turns opaque white. There are work arounds, but it would be simpler to be able to turn a selected area transparent. So what gives? Running Windows 7.

I got married a few weeks ago and took some digital pics of the evening disco that have come out rather blurred and out of focus. I have tried to find a way of using paint to sort out the pictures but with no luck. I have looked at the plugins that are available but cannot find anything suitable.

Is it possible to clear the clipboard without shutting down entirely? How?
I tend to multi-task to excess and this is causing me to mess up more than usual.

However I thought I will learn by experimenting and loaded a JPEG image. The image has a white border. I wanted to remove the border so selected it with magic wand and tried the delete command. Nothing happened! I tried to google around and came across floating layer. Checked this too. Saved the image as GIMP image opened but the border refuses to leave the image. How can I remove this border and make it transparent?

I've made an abstract background using a gradient fill on the background and some ellipse selections also filled with overlay gradients. This image has been saved as .xcf before closing down Gimp. When I reopen the image, I don't see any way to remove the gradient fill so that I'm just left with the selection.
Ultimately, I want to change the gradient colors .

This is my first data with GIMP and I would like to know how I remove an area of a photo and turn it clear and save it to a PNG?
In the attached photo you will see a fireplace, what I would like to do is to either lift the fireplace off the background. OR clear the background and just have the fireplace, then save it out as a PNG file.

I am trying to create an image of "Frosted Glass" I want to be able to save this and later import it to put on top of other backgrounds and layers so that you would see the back layer as looking through frosted glass.
I am new to gimp but have been looking around at different walkthroughs. I must be missing somthing though because I am not getting what I would expect.
How I am trying to do this is I created 3 layers a light blue, white and alpha channel(transparency layer).
I adjusted the opacity down of the white and blue layers and then merged all 3 and again tried to adjust the opacity to acheive the effect. However I am a million miles off the mark.

Is there a way to zoom in towards a collection of photos or video using the GIF function of Photoshop without a frame by frame tactic? Like I have a video of a boat sailing and I want to zoom into a section of the boat during the playback? Are frame by frame images the only way to do this?

I have a catalog with all photos imported from a trip I just got back from. But when I compare the catalog to the actual photos in the folder, there are 104 pics missing from the catalog. If I try to sync the catalog, it says 104 pics need to be imported, but the import process says there are no new photos.
I created a new catalog and tried to import the folder again, but its still missing the same 104 pictures.

One of the most fantastic features of Gimp was it's ability to use a MIDI controller such as this:
It's now not possible to resize brushes because Gimp has no scale function. Scale was much better than the new size which goes to an absurd 10000 pixel brush. This means you can't use set value from MIDI as is done here:
I have to mouse around in UI or use my Wacom strip. The brilliant ergonomics of Gimp via MIDI is ruined.

Any way to make the "click" function into a keyboard shortcut in gimp. I use a mouse, but the clicking interferes with my strokes (I like to hover my mouse gently. This way is faster and more presice for me.) I ould like to know if I can use a key like backslash or "v" to replace the clicking action when using brushes.

I am trying to use the function to outline a border to text with the function "Path to text" but no matter how I try the path will only use 16-19 letters in one row.
I have read several guides on how to do this and no one mention anything about this issue. As long as I have 16 letters on one line it works, but I have more it will just skip them.
I write the text:
12345678901234567890
Then I click an choose "path to text", but when I do it will only create a path of 1234567890123456 and skip the rest. If I write text on several rows it will use up to 16 letter on each row.
Is there an limit to "Path to text" .

I would like to obtain a black and white image of a photograph of a book page.
My attempt to do this is by running the threshold function over theentire image. This appears to give the desired result, but onlylocally. It appears that the optimum parameters of the thresholdfunction vary by position (i.e., according to some scalar field), withone extreme in the center of the glare and then radiating outward. Sojust running the threshold function over the entire image withconstant parameters always gives sub-optimum contrast for 75% of theimage. Will I have to find a way to run the threshold function withnon-constant parameters, or is there some other tool to do the job?

I have re-installed gimp and done a reboot with no change so I am stuck.

This seems absolutly silly.
(setq p1 (getpoint))
(setq p2 (getpoint))
(setq Dist (distance p1 p2))
Why does this not work?
I'm trying to build a command to replace AutoCAD's "DI" command, to give distance and delta x, y, and z values in decimal and imperial, and keep the angles in XY plane and out of XY plane.

I'm trying to be able to have a function run another function with the secondary function being passed as an argument to the first. I'm trying to create a recursive function and the recursive part works great. I just need to be able to have the recursive function run other functions to actually do stuff.
Here is something I found that should do what I need, mainly run a function from a function name in a variable.
Sub test() Dim ftnName As String Dim argument As String Dim result As String ftnName = "myFunction" argument = "cat" result = Application.Run(ftnName, argument) MsgBox resultEnd SubFunction myFunction(inString As String) As String myFunction = inString & " has " & Len(inString) & " letters."End Function
However I get the error "object required" on the "result = Application.Run(ftnName, argument)" line. So I'm guessing the Inventor VBA doesn't like this method of doing this. I'm just hoping there is a way to do this or this function will be useless or reduced to hardcoding functions which still defeats the purpose.

I'm trying to slice an image using the filter-web-slice function but I was wondering if there is a way to customize the function or change its properties in the Python-Fu. I need gimp to slice by columns (start in the top left corner slice each grid down the column then proceed to the next column. Right now all I can get gimp to do is cut by rows. Normally gimps function would be fine but I need the image labeled a particular way so I can use the individual files in a map for a game. I'm making a 118 images so renaming them by hand would take too long.

Why the "Text along path" feature hovers the text so far above the currently active path? (in my case, the space between the path and the text is about 3 times the height of the currently used font!). I've been told that the letters should lie on top of or at least closer to the path instead. How can I move the text closer to the path?

This is a kind of ”HDR”-process done in just 8 small simple steps using GIMP.
What you need is three identical photos where each one has its own exposure – one normal(1), one under exposed(2) and the third over exposed(2). On my Canon 550D this is done with the EAB function. When the process is finished in GIMP the best exposures of each image will appear. The principle for the process is to use the fact that all dark areas in a layer mask will create transparency in the current layer.
all_3_origins.jpg (21.27K)
Number of downloads: 5
1. Open GIMP and Archive – Open: image (1)
2. Archive – Open as Layer: image 2
3. Layers dialog (right click the layer 2) - Add layermask
4. Add mask to layer dialog, choose Grayscale copy of layer and klick Add
This mask will filter all dark shadows and make the layer transparent in those areas.
5. Archive – Open as Layer: image 3
6. Layers dialog (right click the layer 3) - Add layermask
7. Add mask to layer dialog, choose Grayscale copy of layer, mark ”Invert” and click Add
This mask will filter all highlights and make the layer transparent in those areas. Try mode Normal or Addition
8. Merge all visible layers.*
HDR Dialog.jpg (27.78K)
Number of downloads: 3
9. Done!!
Final_image.JPG (80.72K)
Number of downloads: 6
10. Now you can threat and manipulate the image as one image and save it.
*Further more; before merging you can adjust levels (Color - Levels) for each layer mask as well as opacity (Layers dialog) for each layer to fine tune layers for the final image.

I just got a new computer. I had Photo Shop Elements on my old one. I appears that Gimp can do the same things for free. One thing Photo Shop Elements did was provide a way to scan as many photos as would fit on your scanner and then provide a way to separate them. Can Gimp do that? Sometimes I would need to use Elements to open a scanned photo. Would Gimp open a photo scanned on Elements?
I am trying to decide whether to buy Elements for my new Windows 8 or download Gimp.

Btw,what do photographers call such a paper?

In this tutorial, we will be adding color and definition to "drained" images, which are lacking it.
This tutorial is similar in concept to 14Stones's Cool Render effect (simple) tutorial which can be found here. I discovered part of this method a while ago, and it isn't really a secret, so I didn't copy 14Stones.
Anyway, I will be using this image:
It's nice, but is lacking.
First, duplicate your picture.
Next, on the the top one, Gaussian Blur it by 5 pixels and set the layer mode to overlay.
Finally, Sharpen the bottom layer by 20 pixels.
