GIMP :: Get Clear Transparency Effect - Frosted Glass
Jun 29, 2012
I am trying to create an image of "Frosted Glass" I want to be able to save this and later import it to put on top of other backgrounds and layers so that you would see the back layer as looking through frosted glass.
I am new to gimp but have been looking around at different walkthroughs. I must be missing somthing though because I am not getting what I would expect.
How I am trying to do this is I created 3 layers a light blue, white and alpha channel(transparency layer).
I adjusted the opacity down of the white and blue layers and then merged all 3 and again tried to adjust the opacity to acheive the effect. However I am a million miles off the mark.

a realistic method for making frosted glass. The problem that i have is i am ainterior designer and want to produce large panes (or smaller sections on larger panes) of frosted glass in an interior enviroment. At the moment i work in 3ds MAX creating the glass in there and apply a blur to it in photoshop. Iknow you can prob create frosted glass in 3ds MAX but it can be quite render heavy..

I want to create a clock with a frosted glass look and maybe some icicles or ice as well. It is for a project i am doing. The theme is "magic of a moment" and my idea is that a frozen clock would represent in a moment, time seems to slow down/freeze.
Is illustrator the best to do this or should i use photoshop?

I've found a hotfix for 2012 that I've used to solve some issues with tranparent parts in shaded views and that leads to this question.
In an IDW , "non shaded", "hidden lines removed", view are there any tricks for being able to see parts behind a transparent part?
I know I can change the view to display hidden lines and delete what I don't want. This works ok for a small assembly, but for a larger assembly, is not feasible or at least very tedious.

Can you make a glass, which is transparency also in elevation views? In 3D views it is transparency and you can adjust it too, but not in elevation view? Is it so?
You can only hide it totally or let it be non transparency?
See illustration what I mean.

I have been meaning to cover this in one of the Workbooks and maybe some day I will remember.
I cloned the original photo, applied a Circular, Stained Glass transparency to the clone, moved the center of the transparency over the Datura blossoms, reduced the diameter, and reversed the settings.
In a few seconds I dramatically changed the photo.
I cloned the second photo of dramatic smoke from the recent wildfire, applied a vertical Linear, Stained Glass transparency to the clone, starting at the dark portion of the bottom of the cloud at 0% and ending just above the mountain tops at 100%.
Again, in less than the time it would take to open Photoshop, I had dramatically enhanced an already dramatic photo.

I've just landed some contract work where I will design glass forms/containers and render realistically. Also, I need to retain transparency so I change backgrounds.
I'm more adept with Photoshop than Illustrator, but would like input on who likes which program for this task, why, and where I can find excellent tutorials before I start spending my tutorials dollars.

I'm working in house for a company on a website that requires graphics similar to the glass bubble effects that are used on Apple's website.
Is there a simple technique to dreate these graphics? Better still is there a downloadable plugin?
as the glass bubble effect is a bit old-hat now...

I am looking for a way to make a convincing cracked glass effect in Photoshop (CS3). Not broken (fragmented) glass, just cracked. It would, ultimately, be a layer over another graphic (a round gauge).
Ive googled many combinations of this and, while there are many tutorials that say they are for cracked glass, most are actually for broken glass, not cracked, and none of them, of either sort, are very convincing.
There are also any number of sites offering brushes; but again, the few that post examples arent very convincing, which leaves me leery of the rest.
I am open to suggestions, or if anyone knows of a tutorial site I may have missed . . .
BTW; I am much more of a technician than an actual artist, so my attempts at painting/drawing something have been, shall we say, less than adequate.

Basically, I want to be able to create a glass effect on a square icon tile. I want the glass to be translucent so that the image behind the square icon tile is blurry (hence the translucency). I know how to create effect if I want it over some user-defined background layer, but what I am trying to do is a bit different. I need to import a PNG file into a theme program, and it uses this glass tile. I want the glass tile to have the translucent effect, but the problem is, I can only get the effect to work if I create a layer over a user-defined background layer. What I want is to have the translucent effect over whichever background is used in my theme program. I am not sure if this is possible to do with a PNG file, or even possible at all. If anyone could shed some knowledge on this I would greatly appreciate it.

We would like to make the transparency of glass-materials visible in views and section-views by using the "realistic style". During a 3d-view our glass-material looks like transparent. Isn't it possible for REVIT to display the transparency of materials in views ?
The workaround to hide "glass" by using "overriding visibility" is not possible for us because some of our families and project families are using glass-materials inside (Showcases f.e.).

When I use the Cut or Clear function with a graphic design I can punch a hole right through a layer or layers. But with a jpeg photo and duplicate layers all I get is that the selected area turns opaque white. There are work arounds, but it would be simpler to be able to turn a selected area transparent. So what gives? Running Windows 7.
