GIMP :: Aligning Text With The Canvas
Mar 19, 2011
Just wanted to align some text with the canvas. Thinking I'd simply overlooked the feature, How do you align a layer to the canvas? Specifically, a text layer.
The answers I found:
Use mouse to drag layer to the center of canvas. (This does not result in the accuracy for which I was hoping, unless I do some math to determine and pinpoint the proper location and try to keep my hand steady.)
Cut, copy, paste. (This renders the text uneditable.)
There isn't an align feature?

I have no problem getting my text along a path but I am having trouble getting the text and the path to align so that the center of the text element is centered on the path.
Is this possible or do I have to figure out someway to make my path of a certain length so it ends up that the text fits to it perfectly??
Here is a screenshot of my current problem. You can see that the text and the image below it are centered. I then placed some guide lines to make sure my path was also centered. When I placed that text along the path though, it left justified the text when I want it to be centered instead..

I've just tried entering some text on a blank canvas in GIMP 2.8.4 and the text tool doesn't seem to be working right. I click on the text tool, click on the canvas and try to type, but it doesn't actually type; it just operates all the shortcuts assigned to the keys that I've pressed.
Running OS X Mavericks on a late 2012 MacBook Pro.

I open text, select font, etc, click on canvas, text editor comes up, type in text but it doesn't go onto the canvas. I have played around with it for a while, started again from scratch, looked up tutorials.

I tried GIMP on Linux Mint and was delighted.A bit annoying, though, was that the on-canvas-text-editing parameters box can't be turned off, because it's in the way when I want a full view of my graphic while I'm typing and editing.

I have been taking a series of pictures of a church over the seasons and would like to make a slide show from them showing the changes. The problem is I have taken them by hand and so the images do not completely overlay.
Is there a way I can select part of the image, for example the top of the church door beam and then align each other image to the same position. This may require some of the images to rotate themselves slightly. I would then like to be able to crop each image to a defined area, the same in all cases, and then save the images. I was planning to produce a slide show in powerpoint with the images to show how the church has changed over the seasons but if there is an option to do this with better results I would like to consider it.

I'm a Gimp newbie, using 2.8.4. I have a png image that's 530 pixels wide. I'm trying to merge it with a white background layer that is 960 pixels wide. I need to align the image to the right side of the background layer. This is what I did:
- opened my image
- created background layer (960 px wide)
- made background layer the bottom layer
- clicked on Alignment tool
- clicked the hand cursor on the image (530 px wide)
- made the background layer the active layer
- set "Relative to:" Active layer
- clicked on the right alignment arrow
The image did move to where I wanted it, but most of the image from the right edge disappeared, so all I've got is a small portion of the left side of the image in the middle of my background layer. Then I did the following:
- merged visible layers with Expand as necessary
That action merged the layers, but all I have is a small part of my image near the center of the background.

I am struggling to properly align text because the bounding boxes are not centered around the text. Therefore, when I try to align it with another object, it is off. I am using CS 6 and, generally, the point and type tool. it might be the type of font (that perhaps they are "bad" fonts) but it doesn't seem to matter which type of font I use. The bounding box always has extra space underneath the text, even when using a very standard font like Times New Roman.

If you can use the ALIGN command to align multiple text objects in the Y-Axis? (or X-Axis as well)
I know about changing the X value of a bunch of text objects to align them that way. I'm just wondering if the ALIGN command will allow you to do something similar?
I want to do this without lisp too. If there are other methods I'm always wanting to learn! I just had a new cad user ask me about the ALIGN command and I couldn't get it to do it.

I wish to align a text like this at an oval shape. The field of the text body does align at all - which I can understand. Using the grafic text, it aligns directly on/ over the outline of the oval shape. But I won't have the whole text in a round - I just want to have the paragraph's left side to be aligned/ positioned at the outer shape of the oval.

I have a variable number of text lines I would like to arrange along the path of half a circle. I would like the text to look like each text-string is radiating from the circle (the path I have as half a circle).
I would like to do this in adobe illustrator
I would like the text to be evenly spaced along the path dependent on how many lines of text I have.
I have seen other discussions suggesting either the blend-tool or the brush-tool. But no luck. The blend-tool would make distorted shapes in between, and would twist and distort the text. The brush tool would make each text a little bit 'cone-shaped', and I would prefer having the text without such a 'cone-shape'.
I am attaching a picture that halfway shows my intentions. In this diagram I have started rotating the first 4-5 text-lines. I have more text-strings (just above the half-circle) that I also would like to include along the path the half-circle is indicating.
The final goal is to get each of these locality-names raditing from the tips in the little red tree.
Is it possible in illustrator to align the text along a path like this? It is almost similar to the normal align objects and distribute objects.
I am working on a Mac OSX 10.5 Adobe Illustrator CS3.

Type some text and try to change orientation to vertical and the program rotates 90 degrees to the right instead of aligning text.
I did a reset of Photoshop settings file (CTRL + SHIFT + ALT on Photoshop boot) and no change of issue.
Video of issue included.

When I have my alignment labels and plan view text align to the layout view in Paper Space they plot out very bold.
I am using Style: Swis721 BT-Italic. I use that style in the profile for labels and in plan view. When I plot out the sheet the profile view plots good but the text that was aligned in the plan view is very bold.

Windows XP 32bit, English.
This does not occur when aligning objects, nor text with an object. This only occurs (as far as I can tell) when aligning two or more sets of text alone.
When I enter the align and distribute window the vertical align checkboxes are greyed out with "Top" selected.
It is not possible to uncheck or select any other vertical align option. It is possible to "force" the window to deselect it by selecting "top" in the distribute tab, but this does not make the align options selectable again.
You can workaround this by creating a temporary object to align with your text.

With all the interface options, I'm having trouble finding one I think was available in previous versions: rotating the canvas.
Is it in the menu somewhere? Is there a shortcut?
I'm already very impressed (and somewhat overwhelmed) by all the features I've seen so far in Gimp.

HAving just installed 2.8 after using 2.6, I find all scanned images and existing jpeg files I created in 2.6 are displayed at ridiculously large dimensions. In 2.6, all scanned images were loaded on screen at their actual A4 size, regardless of scan resolution. In 2.8 they are loading up on screen at around 5 times the actual size - it seems I have to scale the image back down to A4 before I can start editing it? I tested this on A4 jpeg files I created on 2.6, and they also load on screen at massively enlarged sizes. how to get these images to display at their actual sizes?

I have an image with many layers. I want to cut a vertical strip out of the middle of one of the layers because I want to narrow the transparent gap between the left side of that layer and the right side. That is, my image has stuff on the left side and stuff on the right and a gap in the middle through which shows the pattern in the layers below, and I want to narrow that middle gap. I want to do the same thing as cutting a vertical strip down the middle of that top layer with scissors so I can scrunch the sides together, so less of the patterns on the layers behind shows through.
Is there any way to do this? It doesn't work when I simply select the area I want to cut and click "cut" or "clear" - those commands don't get rid of the canvas in that section, just the contents, which are transparent anyway.
I'm trying to avoid resizing the canvas and then laboriously reconstructing the layer with all the finicky alignment issues, because that seems unnecessarily time-consuming, when all I need to do is remove a gap in a blank section. I tried using guides to guillotine the image, but that, too, is turning out to be time-consuming in terms of reassembling the image. I know I must be missing something obvious - how does one simply remove a selection of the canvas (and not of the image itself) with the selection tool?

basically what I did was I wanted a certain part of an image and I used the eraser tool along with adding the alpha channel so I can get rid of everything in the image but a cropped version of it (basically erasing around what I want to keep). How do I fit the canvas to this oddly shaped image now?
You can say I want to create an icon but when I save it as a .png or .jpg, I get this white background replacing the alpha channel when I just want the cropped image itself. I tried going about using the free select tool, going around the image and then using the "Fit Canvas to Selection" option but that just takes way too long.

I have an image with 85 layers, let's say they are all 100x100 pixels.
The layers are all aligned on the top and left borders of the canvas.
The canvas is 100 pixels wide and 8500 pixels tall.
I want to put the first layer on the top of the canvas, then the secondlayer with its top border aligned with the bottom border of the firstlayer. Then the third layer just below the second one, etc. So that all 85layers are spread on the full height of the canvas.
Actually, some layers are less than 100 pixels tall. I still want thelayers to be one next to the other. So if my first layer is 60 pixels tall, the second layer must be moved at 0,60 in the canvas. And if the second oneis 90 pixels tall, the third one must me moved at 0,150.
How can I do that? Is there a plugin? It doesn't seem very hard to code in Scheme.

I don't seem to be able to click on the canvas in GIMP. I installed a tablet(Wacom Bamboo) and assumed that the pen wasn't working correctly until I realised that I couldn't click with my mouse either. The mouse and tablet work fine in other programs. It didn't have the problem until I installed the driver for the tablet(I think). I can use any feature that doesn't involve clicking on the canvas(adjusting curves, scaling, changing the saturation, etc.), I just can't do things like make a selection, or use the paintbrush.
I'm using GIMP 2.6.11 on Ubuntu 11.04.

After updating to GIMP2.8.4 I am seeing a constant problem with the canvas not updating after any change unless I move the cursor out of the image area. It starts updating immediately but if I move the cursor back it stops even if it hasn't finished redrawing. This is not just for image changes; the selection outline does not update either unless I move the cursor out of the image area! There's another problem with the selection outline - sometimes it just stops displaying, period, and I ave to use quick mask or save and close GIMP.
