AutoDesk Smoke :: Character Kerning Shortcut
Aug 12, 2013I can't seem to find the keyboard shortcut to kern between characters in the text effect - is there one? Pretty much every caption generator I've ever used has something like alt arrow to adjust between characters - even Avid title tool! I know I can use the kerning slider but that's a bit slow on larger amounts of text.

Dec 6, 2011We have a SAN network that is several folders deep where we put all our project files. I see that there is a short cut that saves with User or Project in the network module. But it doesn't work!! At least for me. I had this work a few versions back but it wasn't consistent, which was weird.

Jun 20, 2013Well, over a minute and it feels like forever. Working Smoke 2013 EXT1 with mostly soft imported material. In the past the size of the librarys had much affect on this but with the new lay out I can't see a way to limit the libraries as they are always in the side pannel. Is collapcing them stopping that library from being included in the auto save? This is only a 20 min show but I do have 3 in here and expect to have 10 before it's all said and done.

Aug 2, 2012Is there any keyboard shortcut in Smoke to shuttle quickly across footage (with sound playing) at 2x or 3x speed like you can in Avid/FCP/Premiere etc by double/triple-tapping the J and L keys?
This makes scanning through clips and the timeline so much faster and I consider it a basic essential.

Jun 19, 2012I didnt see an auto adjust option in the gmask node, I can always use the hot key (classic smoke not FCP7 ha!) but I think its a nice feature to not have hidden.
Also having the context button in plain site not a right click would be nice too. Not a fan of the right click anything being a long time user of smoke and flame.
AutoDesk Smoke :: Auto Stabilizing High Resolution Clip?
Feb 4, 2013I've been trying to use the auto stabilize module on the desktop on a R3D clip that's at full 5K and I've been encountering some problems.
I can't seem to process the stabilization at anything higher than 1080p. But I need the extra info in the 5K in order to crop into the footage.
When I'm trying to analyze the footage, I'm getting the error: "Cannot read all frames required for the analysis"
So far I've tried:
-Caching the footage
-Converting the R3D to full 5K DPX and importing that
-Using proxies at 50% frame size and do the analysis on the proxies
So far nothing seems to be doing the trick, the proxy frames did go through the analysis, but when I applied the correction on the high-res the module gave me an error and crashed.

since you were asking for feedback on the editor UI from Mac users...
a) is there a cut button that allows to cut a clip into two at the current marker positions? (e.g. to repeat certain elements)
b) is there an easy way to add extra frames at the beginning or the end of the clip by holding the first or last frame? (very important, but cannot find how to do this). Ideally this would just require dragging the beginning or end of the clip somehow...
c) There should be an easy option to add frames by extending the last or first frame in the case of transitions. Is there one? On Premiere, there's an option for this, makes it much faster to add transitions if there is limited movement in the source material
d) is there a way to auto stretch a clip on insert into the timeline to the selected region? time warp and frame-hold options (beginning, end, both)?
e) why is it not possible to drag clips back into the media hub on the left? (e.g. imported an AAF with a bunch of clips, now want to store some of the clips for later re-use in another timeline or part instead of having to keep it on the timeline)
f) the zooming into the timeline is cumbersome - is there a way to draw a rectangle to auto-zoom into that area? Premiere has a little scroller at the boom to select the zoom level. very useful.
g) for timeline zooming, could you support gestures on the MacBook touch pad? If you push two fingers apart, the timeline should horizontally zoom in. Two fingers together should allow to zoom out. This is actually not just for the timeline. We need this in all views in Connect FX, Action etc. Would make working so much quicker. And it's really standard Mac stuff. (Two fingers without pushing apart could enable panning? And/or space + mouse movement to pan?)

1. If I have a layered Photoshop file or png with an alpha channel (a still frame lower third), I see that I can import it as a multi layered clip, but what is the best way to have it in the sequence to show up properly?

Jul 10, 2012Does Smoke have selection functionality similar to that of Combustion? As an example, you might want to selectively blur part of an image. In Combustion, you would draw a selection and then apply an operator above the selection to achieve this. I don't see a similar selection tool function in Smoke, but I imagine you could achieve the same effect by duplicating a layer and using a Gmask via the Wipe timeline FX.does Smoke not have a selection tool similar to Combustion?

Nov 14, 2011I have RED footage which I exported as EXR. When I import them back in, they look exactly like the RED footage. But when I import the EXR in Fusion, export it back out, and then import that EXR into Smoke, it looks brighter, although I didn't change anything in Fusion. (when I compare the EXR from Smoke and the EXR from fusion in my finder on my desktop, they look exactly the same). So what is Smoke doing with the "foreign" exr on import?I was also playing with the LUT settings. I get a result which is close, but I need to be exact.
