AutoDesk Smoke :: How To Change Processing From ProRes To DPX
Sep 9, 2012
I am "pre-finishing" my work inProRes. Maybe because I have a slow internal HDD and too many timeline effects that need rendering.I am happy with the effects timing, the edit and the overall project. The next thing that seems obvious to me is to "switch" to "DPX uncompressed" (assuming I now have a fast Thunderbolt storage).
To achieve this I switched my project (with the pre-rendered ProRes timeline) to Uncompressed in the "Project settings".When done, the timeline was still rendered. It should have become "unrendered".To flush the existing render, I pressed "Force Render".
If I hover over the timeline thumbnail using the "?" key, I receive 1920x1080 8-bit.This is the case for both DPX and ProRes settings. If the timeline is rendered in ProRes, it should say so in the clip information.
I'm on 2012 SP3. I'm able to import and work with ProRes 422 just fine. But when I go to output and choose Quicktime, no ProRes options appear. Do I have to set this up somehow?
having problems when generating managed media through the Mediahub from H264 into Apple ProRess 4:2:2 (HQ).
I tried different options but that happens that it never finishes rendering the files, and the Jobs tab shows the system updates the files randomly with a "busy" status while all of the others show "waiting". However nothing happens.
I entered the managed folder from the Store and have nothing but a couple of 1 frame clips.
I've been running the trial for a week with no problems importing and caching media in ProRes 422. Today when I booted up smoke I attempted a similar practice run with importing some random clips and playing around again and noticed that nothing was getting cached. When I clicked import it said it could not connect to backburner on port 0.
There appear to be a couple of threads regarding this issue where people lose the ability to cache media or export using backburner. I followed a thread posted here: [URL] ....
I tried restarting backburner, restarting the mac, reinstalling smoke and attempted the "clean install" script that is listed in the article above. After I performed the terminal commands and reinstalled Smoke, it connects to backburner but now in the jobs tab/backburner manager says it is waiting (occasionally switches to "busy" for a second or two).
Here's the error I get in backburner manager: Matthews-MacBook-Pro.local 1946321280 swBIOSubJobServer.C:385 02/13/13:16:23:24.347 1946321280 swBIOAdapter.C:454 02/13/13:16:23:25.403 Cannot process tasks 0... in /var/tmp/WireJob/SubJob0 Unimplemented feature while reading source frames
I'm running Smoke on an internal SSD and my framestore is also on an internal HDD, but I can't imagine that's an issue since I had already successfully imported media before.
I also attempted to export a sequence of soft imported footage (also failed). The error is below:
Matthews-MacBook-Pro.local 2893642280 transcoderMediaProvider.C:312 02/13/13:16:56:30.268 Cannot get type of clip IFFFS-16:/stonefs7/Stinkzone/workspace/Media Library/_Export_130213_165628_1/H_16777343_S_1360792589_U_170633/hires: Project Stinkzone not found
Am I right in assuming that YUV Headroom should only be enabled when importing YUV 422 10bit files?
How does Smoke deal with RGB import of 4444 files? I am hoping it is similar to Resolve & imports the full range?
I tested this by importing with & without headroom & exporting dpx of both. I then compared these to the full range imports in Resolve & the dpx derived from not enabling headroom was the match.
I ask this as I want to ensure my comps go to Grade ok, and the colourist is happy! Last time I did this we were working with 422 10bit files & I had to enable headroom in Smoke in order to match Resolves 'full range' import.
Is there a way I can render in cfx frame by frame, sort of like the way you can view each frame while it is being processed in batch on Flame? It's extremely inconvenient to continuously have to exit out of cfx back on to the timeline to view rendered composites!
I just installed Smoke2013 without a problem! But I accidentally put the media storage in the main OS drive!! I want to use my Raid 0 drive. I unistalled it and delete all the autodesk folders and installed again but the setup program did't ask to use the other drive like the first installation!! It just used the main OS drive as before!!! How can I change the Media drive to another drive? Why when I unistalled Smoke and then re installed It didn't ask to select the media drive?
I tried working on PNG image sequences instead of video footages.the problem is Smoke recognizes the fps as 59.94, and i want to make it down to 25fps.i tried using PAL.cfg, the frame rate did change to 25fps but when the sequences are imported in the timeline, its still 59.94fps.
In other applications, you hold down shift (quite often) as you move a slider and it jumps in larger increments. How is that done in Smoke 2013. For instance I want to move the scale value in larger increments.
I seem to recall that it is possible to call up a large grey box with info regarding the clip that you hover the mouse above? I have tried to use”/” (key next to shift), but it seems to relate to contextual stuff in ConnectFX. I tried to change the hotkey, but the result is the same..?
Framerates: When I import a DPX, ProRes etc. sequence I can change the different parameters through “resize” which works really great, but I can’t change the framerate. Often I just want to playback a DPX sequence @ 25 frames/sec. instead of 24. Is this possible without using “TmeWarp”?
When setting up a new project, I'm unable to change the bit depth for the project. It's set to 8-bit and ghosted. The graphics render button has a selector but when clicked it doesn't bring up the drop down.
My guess is that it has something to do with my hardware configuration (read: I need to upgrade my GPU) .
I am really liking the change in grey level to indicate focus as I click on timeline or desktop or mediahub. I think this needs to be a larger change - maybe 20% of the intensity and would work better as a means of showing source/record focus than the annoying white outline. I also like the desaturate I suggested on the inactive timeline bar 0 its a very simple way of quickly seeing what is live (other than glancing at the broadcast monitor).
All's well that ends. That's why its called finishing.
Is there a way to change the sensitivity of the transformation boxes? For example, if I want to very slowly change the click-drag scrolling functionality of the x position. Like in After Effects you hold command while dragging.
I want to turn on 'constant shape' parameter in gmask and i want to do it for multiple spline. How can i do that ? How to select multiple spline in viewer ? Also, i tried to pick multiple spline using animation editor but when turn 'on' the 'constant shape' , it only apply to single spline.
See attached. It now take 4 pen actions to get the safe titles overlay on and off. And before it was one pen movement. So before it was aptly named quick off. Now you should rename it. Slow off. Or "waste of time" something that matches function.
I vote for reinstating the quick off operation from 2012. And I checked, there is no quick off in the hotkey editor, so I can't streamline the usage with a user key.
I noticed in the demo that when we enter Editor mode for Axis, the cursor will change to blue (refer photo attachment). The cursor will allow us to make multiple selection of the subdivide points that we created.Somehow when i do it, the cursor didnt change.is there any hot key that i need to know to activate the blue selection tool?
I just moved Smoke from an office to my house. Have different IPs in both places. I understand that I need to change the IP on two places: the "hosts" file and on the license itself. Where can I find these files?

Simple way to select multiple clips in a sequence and change their durations to, lets say, 5 frames each. I'm basically trying to make a "stop animation" edit using footage that was recorded with different durations.
I have a Batch with 3 Action nodes inside. Each of these has multiple Geoms tucked away in groups.I only want to see some of the Geoms about half way through the clip. It's raised a few questions:
1) I can only think of animating their transparencies to make them appear at a certain point, is there some other way? Like if it was footage you could use the Timing in Batch.
2)I couldn't find a way to easily select a bunch of Geoms and change their transparency together, I could only do it by using Duplicate mode. But that takes all the parameters from the parent, what if you just wanted to alter one thing?
I could use an expression, but would I have to do that one at a time on all the Geoms?
3) What does the Parenting mode do exactly? can't you just parent thing while in Move mode? What does it add?
4) So I used Duplicate to link the Geoms to one in particular, it doesn't seem to have affected anything I didn't want it to (fingers crossed) and then used an expression on that to link it to a control axis for ease. Does that sound the easiest way?
5) And finally, I was just thinking it would be nice if I linked the transparencies to a control axis of some kind in the Batch, to affect all of the Actions. I half expected to find a 'Control Node' in the box Is there a particular node that would work well as a control axis?
I know that the AJA Kona 3 card has 2 outputs. Can Smoke send one eye to one channel and the other eye to the other of the Kona 3 card? Dual Stream output is what I am really getting at.
Is there any way that Smoke can see/output sub-blacks and super whites? Can't find any way of seeing them on my scope, Smoke just clamps everything. It won't even see anything below zero in order for me to make a correction on it, everything seems to be clamped on import. I'm using ProRes HQ footage.
What is the best plugin to do spline warps in smoke?(need something like the distort in flame) I notice revisionfx don't make a warper for smoke on mac.
I am experimenting with Smoke 2013 pre-trial and I am having issues with importing images and video with alpha channels.
1. If I have a layered Photoshop file or png with an alpha channel (a still frame lower third), I see that I can import it as a multi layered clip, but what is the best way to have it in the sequence to show up properly?
2. If I have a QuickTime in animation format or Pro Res4444 format with an embedded alpha, how can I import that file to show and cut it on a top layer to animate above my video?
Does Smoke have selection functionality similar to that of Combustion? As an example, you might want to selectively blur part of an image. In Combustion, you would draw a selection and then apply an operator above the selection to achieve this. I don't see a similar selection tool function in Smoke, but I imagine you could achieve the same effect by duplicating a layer and using a Gmask via the Wipe timeline FX.does Smoke not have a selection tool similar to Combustion?
