AutoDesk Smoke :: Where Is ProRes Output
Jul 12, 2012I'm on 2012 SP3. I'm able to import and work with ProRes 422 just fine. But when I go to output and choose Quicktime, no ProRes options appear. Do I have to set this up somehow?

View 1 RepliesI am "pre-finishing" my work inProRes. Maybe because I have a slow internal HDD and too many timeline effects that need rendering.I am happy with the effects timing, the edit and the overall project. The next thing that seems obvious to me is to "switch" to "DPX uncompressed" (assuming I now have a fast Thunderbolt storage).
To achieve this I switched my project (with the pre-rendered ProRes timeline) to Uncompressed in the "Project settings".When done, the timeline was still rendered. It should have become "unrendered".To flush the existing render, I pressed "Force Render".
If I hover over the timeline thumbnail using the "?" key, I receive 1920x1080 8-bit.This is the case for both DPX and ProRes settings. If the timeline is rendered in ProRes, it should say so in the clip information.
having problems when generating managed media through the Mediahub from H264 into Apple ProRess 4:2:2 (HQ).
I tried different options but that happens that it never finishes rendering the files, and the Jobs tab shows the system updates the files randomly with a "busy" status while all of the others show "waiting". However nothing happens.
I entered the managed folder from the Store and have nothing but a couple of 1 frame clips.
I've been running the trial for a week with no problems importing and caching media in ProRes 422. Today when I booted up smoke I attempted a similar practice run with importing some random clips and playing around again and noticed that nothing was getting cached. When I clicked import it said it could not connect to backburner on port 0.
There appear to be a couple of threads regarding this issue where people lose the ability to cache media or export using backburner. I followed a thread posted here: [URL] ....
I tried restarting backburner, restarting the mac, reinstalling smoke and attempted the "clean install" script that is listed in the article above. After I performed the terminal commands and reinstalled Smoke, it connects to backburner but now in the jobs tab/backburner manager says it is waiting (occasionally switches to "busy" for a second or two).
Here's the error I get in backburner manager:
Matthews-MacBook-Pro.local 1946321280 swBIOSubJobServer.C:385 02/13/13:16:23:24.347

Unimplemented feature while reading source frames
I'm running Smoke on an internal SSD and my framestore is also on an internal HDD, but I can't imagine that's an issue since I had already successfully imported media before.
I also attempted to export a sequence of soft imported footage (also failed). The error is below:

Am I right in assuming that YUV Headroom should only be enabled when importing YUV 422 10bit files?
How does Smoke deal with RGB import of 4444 files? I am hoping it is similar to Resolve & imports the full range?
I tested this by importing with & without headroom & exporting dpx of both. I then compared these to the full range imports in Resolve & the dpx derived from not enabling headroom was the match.
I ask this as I want to ensure my comps go to Grade ok, and the colourist is happy! Last time I did this we were working with 422 10bit files & I had to enable headroom in Smoke in order to match Resolves 'full range' import.
I know that the AJA Kona 3 card has 2 outputs. Can Smoke send one eye to one channel and the other eye to the other of the Kona 3 card? Dual Stream output is what I am really getting at.
View 4 Replies View RelatedWhen applying CFX to the clip it ignores resolution of the project and the time line and creates a resolution of the whole CFX based on clip.
In other words 1080 clip in 720 timeline creates CFX with 1080 out node, ( all action creates in 1080 swell) and only then send 1080 output to timeline where it applying resize soft effect. I know i can change resolution of action, but a can't change resolution of output node ( the las node that feeds output to timeline.) Is there an easy way to work around to feed lets say 720 to escape resizing in timeline.
I created a comp with 30 image planes and an animated camera. Now we want to work with the result in Fusion so I need an FBX. Is there a way to output it directly from action? And how can I export the camera with the animation?

View 4 Replies View Relatedi'm doing a composite and at the end i just want to use a single frame and freeze it for about 5 seconds. i used mux to do that. The problem is when i go back to the timeline , i have to render the whole 5 seconds. That doesn't make sense.
what i want to achieve is the mechanism like 'repeat' in desktop tool. Where i can just grab a single frame and repeat it to be 5 seconds and when i put it in the timeline then no need to render the whole 5 sec. It's just a still frame. So what is the best workflow when freezing inside cfx without spending too much time to render still frame?
While in CFX, Action, Text edit, Axis etc, is there a way to see the output of the timeline? I know while in CFX you can set the CFX output as a context but what if I have multiple CFX composites stacked up and I want to see the final output of the timeline while editing or modifying something inside a CFX or Action node?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a camera move in action to move between a couple of still images. This is going into an interlaced programme so I'd like the move to be interlaced (50i). Currently the ouput is rendering progressive frames and I can't see how to change this within cfx/action.

What is the ability to add multiple output nodes in CFX as same as the way you can in flame.
The default / primary CFX output would link back to the timeline as usual, and then other outputs would render back to a selectable folder in your project library.
OR
Quite often you are creating alternate versions for your edit, so I thought a reasonably elegant solution to route the various version outputs back to the timeline would be to place them into a container.
So on your timeline, the outputs you processed in CFX appears as a container, with the default / primary output visible - inside the container are the various outputs you just rendered. Depending on focus in the container will give you your different version back in the timeline.
But I guess the only snag with this idea is that you can't edit CFX once they are inside of a container. So you would "Uncontain" - modify one of the outputs and then "Make Container" again for the sake of keeping the timeline clean and manageable.
in cfx schematic , i got an action network, i set this action so it can output the comp and also the matte (the node got 2 output indicator : yellow and blue). Now if i right click and choose 'create cfx' , i will get a new cfx node , but i only output the final comp , there's no matte. In the pref, activate the 'generate alpha' will only output either white or black. Is this feature not avalable yet ?

Can i monitor my stereoscopic 3D 1080i50 workflow using a tv Samsung 3D c8000?
I have the line By line option in the tv, but when i set up smoke to be the same, the tv greys out the option. Maybe it support side By side only.
Is it possible to do the Dual Output option (left and right on two SDI) and use a converter, like AJA HI-5 3D, to obtain the side By side?
Or there is a setting i missed?
I've been away from the forum for awhile. Does the final release output to tape reliably?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am trying to output lens flares and rays in the matte output option from action. These obviously appear to be ok via the 'comp' option, but when I add all objects to output the matte, only the geometry appears in the output, with no sign whatsoever of flares and rays. I would imagine these are available as a choice as they do appear in the object choices. [Code]..
View 2 Replies View RelatedThis is not a YUV headroom issue just to be clear and Im not looking at a broadcast output. Using my Eizo monitor with smoke I just did a color correction and exported a prores 422 hq with and with out yuv headroom. What Im noticing is that the color of the image in the smokes viewer is more saturated than the output which is being viewd in qt 7 and whatever the other qt is. Im not talking fine details here, Im talking about whoa whats going on with this isnt remotley close to being in the same ballpark. In short when I tab over to the qt file and shrink it and place it side by side by what is in the smokes viewer they do not match on the same monitor.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm currently running Smoke 2011 on a Mac Pro and we are feeding a Professional Grade 58" Panasonic Plasma equipped with HDMI and Component connections. We are unfortunately limited to using only the HDMI connection because Smoke 2011 doesn't support component out. Using the HDMI connection means we're limited to a 60Hz refresh rate which, generates flickering cross fades, and strobing with fast moving video. The component connections allow us to utilize a 100Hz refresh rate which eliminates these issues. After a little research, I have learned that Panasonic does not make a professional grade plasma monitor that supports higher than 60Hz through HDMI.

I recently switched from AJA K3 to a BMD Decklink HD Extreme.
Initial testing went reasonably well - working at 1080psf23.98 - output was solid, tape layoffs and captures were frame accurate on short tests.
I'm finishing up a long form 48 minute show, and the audio sync drifts over the course of the layoff. It's about 1 frame per 10 min of content.
By 47:30+00, my audio is 5 frames early during Tape Output - a sync pop is at 47:29+19 - but picture is spot on. Usually I'm working in short form TVCs, so I may have never noticed this - but it's definitely a problem for longer work.
To hit my delivery, I exported a ProRes QT, and laid off from FCP - kind of humiliating to have to depend on FCP for tape workflows.
I also had problems batch capturing from 1080i tape - it could do individual clips if I manually set ins and outs, but Batch Capture never cued up properly in 1080i - it kept rolling back and forth over the cue point, tried 10 times, then gives it up.
I've done this a hundred times with the AJA card and never had a problem - but the BMD is not nearly as solid... (Also performed the Batch Capture in FCP without issues - so the hardware and BMD software seem to be working fine - but not with Smoke.)

Laying out multiple clips to tape from smoke 2013 (maybe in excess of 20 - 30 clips at one time) without having to 'ctrl/click' on each clip individually. In every previous edition of smoke I would be able to go to media library, highlight the folder with all the clips in and press 'output' and all clips would be taken to I/O menu. This is a must for multiple playouts to tape which some of us still have to do on a regular basis. AND don't get me started on having to re-timecode every clip individually because someone thought it a good idea to remove the 'step' (increment) timecode button.
And why if i use smoke2013 without the mac menu at the top do I not have an 'Output to' or 'Capture from' VTR menu.
In the camera view is there a way to hide everything outside the output region, I'm finding it really hard to judge the layout with all the overlapping layers in my scene..?

View 8 Replies View RelatedI set up a sequence that is HD, but I have source material that is 2K (2560x1440). When I try to insert or overwrite said source clip to the sequence, it should insert and automatically add a resize node. Instead, it changes the sequence size to match the source size. Bug?
Also, I can't seem to find a way to resize the output of my connectFX node to match the sequence size. For example, lets say I want to comp a bunch of shots that are 2K in action, and then output an HD sequence matching my sequence size. How is this done? I have changed the comp size in action and linked that to the connectfx node, but it just puts the smaller comp size in a black box which is the size of the source material (in this case, 2K).
When I go into CFX/Action my broadcast monitor switches to the schematic view. Since I already have the schematic view on my computer monitor I want the broadcast monitor to keep the final output. I looked in the preferences but I can't find the right setting. Is there a away to do this?
