AutoCad :: Units From Inches To Millimeters
Dec 15, 2011
I have this problem with units. I am using 2012 Autocad drafting. I want to work with millimeters, for instance usually when I type 1000, that is usually refereed as 1 meter. Now in the new model space when I type 1000 the line is so long, I even have to press regenerate so that I can see the line. I checked the units, they are set to millimeters, I also checked from options - user preferences they are also set to millimeters.
When for instance I will open an older file that I worked on in autocad 2010, in autocad 2012, it will work fine, when I will write 1000, it will actually come up as one meter. The settings in units and options - user preferences are the same.
I also copied a table from the 2010 file to the new one, and the chair comes up very big in the screen, so again I use regenerate to zoom out.
Also every time I open a new file, I have to go to units and change it from Inches to millimeters. Is there a way to do it once, so that you don't have to do it every time you open a new file in autocad? I know you can customize your workspace, and I have, but that doesn't seam to do it.

I have Autodesk Inventor on a student license, and I use the metric system.
I've been able to change the settings for parts, presentations and assemblies to use millimeters, but for some reason the drawing sheets still use inches.
How do I change the unit settings for drawing sheets?

I have some drawings that are drawn in millimeters. I need to add to the drawings but when I type 36 I get a line 36" long. I need to change autocad so that when I type 36 it draws a line that is 36mm.

I am working on AutoCAD 2014 and every time I receive and open a new file from our collaborators in Italy, the file units "turn into" inches.
This means that I have to go to Drawing Utilities, Change the units to cm, and then have to Scale everything so that the measurements make sense again.
I've gone into OPTIONS and have set CM as thed default measurements, but this problem persists. I know that the office in Italy can't possibly be working in inches, so I'm assuming there's something that's "lost in translation" when it comes to opening the file on my end.

I am drawing a plan view of building that is 11 feet by 36 feet. I thought my map units were in feet but when I draw in the linear dimensions, it reads 11 inches x 3 feet. How do I change this?

When I want to edit a solid part in Inventor 2012, I click the "Edit Form" button which automatically launches Fusion. Units are defaulted to cm every time (I don't understand why it can't autodetect units) and the first thing I do is switch them to inches (english). I edit my part then return to Inventor. The part has been resized (smaller by a factor of 2.54) and moved off my original origin. I cannot figure out how to get around this HUGE problem. This has made Fusion useless to me and has drastically reduced the functionality of my ablility to solid edit.
If Fusion is intigrated into Inventor, why does it behave as a totally different product (reversed scroll wheel direction, different units, no refrencing between Inventor features and Fusion, etc.)? It's as if the Fusion programing team and the Inventor programming team met for just long enough to put the Fusion button in Inventor and nothing more.

I received a .dwg file from S. Korea with dimensions and units all in the metric mm and I need the units to be in feet and inches. Is there a command to switch dimensions and units to imperial feet and inches?Â
Rather than changing units in command UNITS Inches and Architectural, and SCALE 25.4, is there any other way to switch metric to imperial systems. Scaling somewhat does the trick but, provided dimensions remain in mm.

Every time I open Xara I have to change the default settings under "Utilities", "Options", "Units" from inches to pixels. There are other default settings I'd like to change as well, but my question is how do I change those settings to default so that when I open Xara, I don't have to go reset them? This is a PITA! I have searched through the help files and don't see any info on changing the standard default settings!

Out of nowhere my AutoCAD commands such as line, offset, circle, etc will only work if i type in the amount in inches. I use feet / inches when i use these commands. It says specify second point... Not sure what this means. For example I want to offset a line 15'-8". It won't let me do that. If i offset a line at 146" it lets me do it.

Is there a way to change the annotations so that they become millimeters and not meters?
I dont really want to change my entire drawing to millimeters because i have other drawings in my model space which suit meters. It's just this one section I have drawn is so detailed and zoomed in, it really should be in millimeters.
If there isn't i'll just change the whole drawing, but thought I should ask on here first in case I was missing something obvious

I am trying to set up a METRIC project (that I want to make template) that uses meters instead of millimeters.
So I created a new project, without the use of any template. I copied from the default Autocad templates folder the Model and Sheet templates to the new project folder and I set the units, scale and grid to meters and changed the path in project properties to these files.
Everything seems to work fine, except creations of sections/elevations.Â
I edited the SectionStyles (Metric).dwg file in default styles folder and It works fine.
But I donÈ›t want to change that file in the default folder, but to change the path of the section styles in the project. The only way I could do that was to change it in the tool palette - right click on callout.Â
So how can I make the SectionStyles to load from a specific location for a project without having to right click on every callout that I want to use and change it manually?
There are some other things to do/change for making the project template that I want? (I am referring to the units setup).

First, when I have a drawing to scale in millimeters and want to put its attributes, the amnotations come out extremely small. It's caused me so many headaches. the units have been set to millimeters, limits from 0,0 to 200-150 ish. Drawing a small drawing within those limits tried very, very small annotations that you can't see unless you zoom 200 times in. I don't have that problem when drawing in inches though. Annotations come out great in inches.
The second problem is that, after I complete a drawing in millimeters and I want to copy and paste it onto my template (also drawn in millimeters to fit a 12-9 paper) the drawing comes out HUGE. At least 100 times bigger than the 1:1 scale should be. When I draw and plot in inches, the 1:1 copy onto a template comes out perfect, but for some reason it always does that in millimeters. I tried placing a block over the template with the "model" to scale and that looks closest to the proper 1:1 scale. I double checked on both the drawing and the template that their 1:1, they seemed fine so I printed. When I measured with a ruler it was still off by a bit.
What I can do to make annotating and plotting in millimeters as easy as with inches?

We have conducted a 6" x 6" grid survey of a building's finished floor and the client has requested the output drawing of the point file survey to be shown in Millimeters. The Point Label style in Civil 3D 2009 only has the option to show Meters which isnt precise enough for the clients wants. I am using the metric template in autocad Civil 3D and all units are set to metric.
Is there a way to change you point label to show Millimeters?
I am using Civil 3D, Update 3

I've been using cad for a while but only for simple layout drawing for parts I need made.
Autocad 2010 I want to set up a drawing to draw some manifold adapter plates in millimeters. I can set it up for inches but I'm having a problem setting up for mm. I start a new drawing and select the template initial setup-manufacturing-metric.dwt In drawing unitDecimal and precision is set at 0.000 Units is set to "millimeters"
I draw a circle to test it. I draw a circle of 5 radius. Should be a circle 10mm in dia, correct? But it is huge, my guess is that it's 10 inches. I'm basing the size on what is printed out when I set my print to no scaling, 1:1, plot window. The same as I have for all the drawings I do in inches.
Second question.
How can I get circle centers to show on prints without actually drawing them or putting in dimensions?

The attached lsp puts tick marks at equal distances along a line/polyline and tags them with the distanace value from the start point. I draw using millimeter units but things like chainage should be displayed in meter units. Using this routine displays the values in millimeter units which I then 'find and replace' to edit their values to meters.
Take a look at the lisp to see if it can be altered to input the mm value at the start but output the meter value to the text values?
Attached jpg graphically shows my request.

I know in the brush options panel you can enter a brush size in millimetres, but is there any way to permantly make it display the size in mm? I need to know how thick some lines are in mm, and even after going to options and changing all diplay uints to mm, it still shows up as pts.
Â
I've attached a picture of exactly what I'm referring to below. (The "Size" field currently showing "15 pt". I need that area to display mm).

OS WinXP and Win Vista 64 bit.
To print business cards, I selected Label AVERY 5371 - 2X 3.5 BusCr. Print preview looks good. There is no any visible alignment problems.
When printing is completed (Linen paper AVERY 5371), there is about 2 millimeters alignment problem for each card. I created my own template and the print is with the same results. The printer I use is Canon MP830 ink jet.

I know this is probably easy, but I can not find the answer.
We've received a dwg drawn in mm (I think) and I want to convert it to inches.
I go to format units and it says unitless. Changing it there does nothing.
I don't want to scale everything we get from them, I want to change the dimension units.
It looks like the scale factor is .0245 in alternate units - correct? Need verification

I received a drawing that was drawn in metric. I would like to draw in inches on it. I can't seem to get it to change. I changed the drawing units to Arch with inches. I brought in a DIM style that is in inches, actually fractional with " as a suffix. When I dimension something it is in mm with the " after it. I also tried to start a new drawing and copied the drawing to the new file, it worked before i imported the drawing but after, everything was mm again. I used copy with base point to transfer the drawing to the new file. Where else would that be controlled from.

I've always drawn in mm and do the scale in this unit. Now at work I have to use inches, but I'm not very sure about what is the scale I have to use. I mean... I always do the scale with the commands Z / Scale / 1000/100xp (1:100 scale example). It is the same for inches? I have seen some drawings in inches & feet with other scales like 3:4.
