I can't seem to find how to use the Inventor 2012 API to project an entire sketch profile from one .ipt to another .ipt file from within an .iam file.

AutoCAD Inventor :: Copy Part Sketch Into Drawing Sketch

Sep 20, 2012

How do I duplicate the 2D line work from a part level sketch into a drawing level (overlay) sketch?

I started a simple 2D piping system diagram sketch by opening a new part file and using a sketch to stick draw the system schematic including some annotations.  Then I opened a new drawing file and made a base view of the part file to bring a view of the original sketch into the drawing.

I realize now that it would have been much easier to have created the schematic directly in a 2D sketch at the drawing level, which would have made editing the annotations much easier at the drawing level, and there is really no need for the part file to exist.  I have no intention of creating a 3D model or "real" part in the .ipt file, was just using it as a jumping off point to sketch.

I was thinking that I could correct my error in judgment by just copying the sketch and pasting it into a new sketch on the drawing, but it doesn't want to work that way.  I have tried copying both the whole sketch at the browser level, and the entire sketch contents (all of the lines and annotations) from the opened part sketch, but when I attempt to paste either of those into the drawing, paste does not seem to be an option.  I'd rather not have to draw the whole thing again, as in typical fashion, my once simple sketch has grown in proportion and complexity from its simple beginning.

Normally a projection is created by imaginary projection lines from the existing sketch to the new sketch perpendicular to the new sketch.

But now and want to project the existing sketch with imaginary projection lines that are perpendicular to the existing sketch.

AutoCAD Inventor :: Hide Project Geometry From Model Sketch -> DXF

Mar 6, 2013

Is there a way to hide project geometry from model sketch? I am modeling a sheetmetal part where I need to sketch centermaks, part number etc. for laser cutting. I want to use xy planes for symmetry reasons when sketching, but I don't want them to appear in dxf. This is a problem if I create a dxf directly from the model.

Usually I create dxf files from drawing by adding new sheet where I create flat pattern view from the spesific part (excluding machinigs etc, only thermal cut boundaries visible). In the drawing I am allso able to show model sketches and hide unwanted project geometry. Is it possible to include these sketches to dxf?

AutoCAD Inventor :: Window Select Sketch Geometry To Project?

While in the new sketch if I select " Project Geometry " I am only able to select one line at a time. quite tedious for some of my larger projects.

I can not honestly say that this feature was available in previous releases but it seems to me it was. Am I missing a variable somewhere?

The CAM is made up of arcs. If it were made from a spline I would be all set. Is there a way to either convert the arcs to a spline or make a CAM follower type arrangement in a part sketch?

AutoCAD Inventor :: Constraining A 3D Sketch To A Part

Dec 13, 2011

I am trying to make a 3D sketch that is constrained to two different parts in an assembly.  I want the sketch to be constrained to each of these parts so that if you move the parts relative to each other the sketch will adapt.

I have tried using work planes and project geometry but when I go to move the part the geometry won't always follow the part.  I am using a spline for the 3D sketch so it should be able to adapt when the parts are moved but the problem is constraining it to something that follows the part.

AutoCAD Inventor :: Can't Reuse Sketch In Adaptive Part

Mar 15, 2013

I have an adaptive part which I created within an assembly. I created work planes in this file, based on features in the assembly, and created a sketch on one of these work planes. I used this sketch for an extrusion. then I wanted to reuse the sketch again for another extrusion - normally one needs to select 'Share sketch' from the right-click menu of the sketch, but this is not available. I have already experienced this (random) behaviour, i.e. the 'Share sketch' option missing from the menu. In those case it was ok to make the sketch visible, and then I could use it again. But now it doesn't work. I made it visible, but when I click Extrusion, Inventor wants me to create a sketch, claiming there is no usable sketch.

A circle inside a circle, same center point, you can click both and get the distance between the two?

(R-click and set circle to Radius does nothing, it still wants to dimension it from the center point)

Not sure if this even possible in the real world sheet metal house to develop the flat pattern.

AutoCAD Inventor :: Sort Sketch Blocks In A Part File?

Sep 17, 2012

Is there any method to sort sketch blocks in a part file? All of our sketch blocks are numbered with a profile number. When we create a new multi-body assembly we will often derive 50-100 of them into the master file. It would be great if we could sort them by profile number.

The next best solution would be the ability to create sub-folders to place them in by type (sort of like assembly folders), but I'm pretty sure this isn't possible.

AutoCAD Inventor :: Display Model Sketch In Part Drawing

How can I display a sketch or projected geometry that is not a closed loop in a ipt drawing? Historically I have to use a closed loop and emboss in order to display the geometry in a drawing.

Then move that forward to a DXF file for its intended use.  I think there should be a way to just have lines placed on the model and display it on a drawing without it having to be a feature.

AutoCAD Inventor :: ILogic Part Snap To Sketch For Walkways?

Apr 25, 2013

The company I'm working for is moving toward standardising all plant designs.  iLogic appears to be the best way for rapidly producing assemblies that keep to a standard.

My new task is to automate the adding of walkways (including hand rails) to large plants.  My idea is that walkways would be added to the plant similar to how frame generator works.  The draftsman would draw a sketch on a plane around the structure.  He would then run a form (That looks like the frame generator form). He would select the lines, a rule would capture the length of that line, pattern the standard walkway along the line until the line intersection, add a corner walkway, and then pattern the straight walkways again.

1) I do not know the ilogic code in order to 'get' a length from the lines that the user selects.

2) how does one constrain the center line of a part to a sketch line.

The second idea I had to create the walkway is (without a sketch), was to have a form that has a dropdown list of all the standard walkway pieces.  The form would work almost like adding a bolted connection to an assembly (e.g. bolt, washer, nut, washer, nut).  The draftsman would for instance,  choose an straight 800mm part, a 1200mm part, a corner(left), a 1200mm part.  Each walkway assembly piece, would then be added to the main assembly in the correct order and constrained.  BTW, is there any book with all the inventor iLogic code, function and uses?  I have found myself pouring though so many forums and picking up bits and pieces, but no actual instruction.
