AutoCAD Inventor :: Insert And Prevent Assembly Rotating In Their Holes
Oct 17, 2012
I want to make an assemby consisting of 3 parts. A crank shaft and a crank pin that screw into threaded holes in a crank disk. How can I insert them and prevent them rotating in their holes but still allow the whole assembly to rotate around the axis of the shaft? Also how could I lock a flywheel on to the shaft so that whole assembly can rotate togeather?

In a weldment assembly i place a symmetric, circular part, but later i want to drill holes in it, and i am afraid that i will accidentally rotate it.
Can i place a constarint that prevents it from rotating? there is no such possibility.
I can ground the part, but i don't like it since if there are modifications they might not be applied (i don't have experience in grounded parts)

If I have a "large" tube with a series of holes along it, say 9mm diameter...
I have another component (an 8.9mm solid cylinder) which should be inserted in those holes......how is the best way of doing it?
I thought about adding a work axis in each hole, but can't find an easy way of doing even that!So how would you do it?
If I make a hole in a rectangular block it all works out, the toroid appears and I constrain the small 8.9mm to the axis of the hole in the block. That does not seem to work with holes in the large tube.

I am fairly new to Inventor and have recently just finished drawing up a machine made of many parts and sub assemblies and then made into one master assembly. Due to the nature of some hole positions i decided to draw some holes directly on the Master assembly thinking it would then change the original sub assembly/part file. Apparently not as i found out making technical drawings.
How i can rectify this so i dont have to re-draw all the holes on part level and keep my constraints in place?

When holes are put in at the assembly level by using the 2d sketch command, projecting geometry and then using the hole command in the Model tab works great. Is there a way to transfer the holes put in at the assembly level to the detail drawings (ipt)?

I have a part that I am inserting into an assembly, the assembly consists of a 2D AutoCAD Architectural background. I want to align the part, with the background itself, so I just need to turn it 90degrees. When I do a rotate, it keeps rotating it on a 3D axis, including when I use my grip edit, and use a line to align for the new rotation.
How do I quickly rotate a part so that it's not rotating on a 3D axis, it just rotates along the x,y axis?

I'm using 2010 and maybe this has been addressed in subsequent versions, i don't know.i've designed parametic platform that I would like to insert into an assembly and have it prompt me for elevation and orientation. Short of VBA code, i'm not sure I can do this. I AM trying to make the process as simple as possible for use by people who will not be overly familiar with Inventor. The easier it can be done, the sooner it can be adopted and more people taught how to actually use it.
I know I can bring it in and constrain it different axes and planes.
I also know that I can insert a piece into an assembly and ground it at 0,0,0. Using that I can ground it at 80 feet in the air or whatever elevation I choose using the occurrence tab of iproperties for the part/assembly. That in and of itself goes a long way toward what i'm trying to do. There's also a rotational setting there that would work for setting an orientation, but it's greyed out. In fact, in any example I try and make, it's always greyed out.
I've tried doing it as an iassembly as well, but there doesn't seem to be any provision in iassemblies for making custom values like there is in an ipart.
Either a dialog to prompt for the info or via something like the occurrence tab is fine.each identical assembly/part has to be individually constrained to get the correct orientation?

I am using Autodesk Inventor Professional 2013.
Motor Model 1:1 is used to turn the wheel holders at various angles. The part named "front gear spring holder" is supposed to revolve and turn the inner part of the "front wheel holder" My problem is that I want to simulate the turning of the front wheel's using contact sets or 3d/2d contact sets in the dynamic simulation environment. I do not know how to do this, but I'm almost certain the program is capable of doing so. Also the spinning of the front wheels must be able to be done along with various angles of the front wheels(while turning, the front wheels must be able to still spin with the front gear spring holder".
I have seen threads and articles that say that making gears with contact sets is not recommended or possible but i have two instances here where they work perfectly fine using the dynamic simulation with 3d /contact sets. Take a look at the simulation I have saved as well.
I will need more on this assembly in the future, including how to create bevel gears that work at 90 degree angles or spur gears with contact sets instead of just simulating their movements .

Is there a way to insert a part that would be grounded or flush constrained on one or two planes only (automatically) and not all three? For example; you'd insert the part and you'd pick the two planes that you want to be flush constrained but the 3rd plane you'd constrain yourself.

I am trying to insert a revolution joint into my assembly but it seems it does not exist. I have attached two screenshots. One is from a tutorial I am going through which contains a longer list of available joints. (More.png) The other is the assembly I am working on which contains less available joints. (Less.png)

I get the following error when I try to insert screws into a new assembly:
Unable to successfully update the member part file. Problem occurred when setting thread data.
I click OK and the part inserts but the thread does not look right! Compare the threads on the screws on the left (shown incorrect) with those on the right!

I have an Inventor drawing which contains multiple sheets. One of the sheets is a drawing of the master assembly. Another sheet is a drawing of a part that is in the master assembly. This part shows up multiple times. I'd like to have a text box or something in the part's drawing that I can put: "Quantity: [Quantity]" where [Quantity] is the number of occurances of the part in the master assembly. I've been searching for a while and can't find a way to do this.

I have an assembly that is made up of 3 unique parts ( 5 parts total). These parts and there features are to be laser cut, then assembled and welded along the outer perimeter in the small chamfer. I have designed the parts to have 5/16 holes, which will be later tapped to 3/8"-16 UNC after assembly.
Once these parts are assembled, I don't understand how I can change the holes to reflect this. Meaning I want the parts to be pre-drilled(laser cut) with 5/16 holes, but I want the assembly to then have 3/8-16UNC holes.
The hole command will not let me select the existing hole features in the assembly and add threads. What is the consequence of inserting a 'new' hole with 3/8-16UNC threads over the existing 5/16" holes in the assembly?
Is my workflow incorrect? should I have the parts modeled with the tapped holes and just make a note on the drawing to not tap these holes until assembly? how does that affect the laser cutting?

There is a line (and two big dots) representing EVERY Assembly insert. And I've been trying to figure out how to hide them.
May be they were there because of some link/point code. But I was unable to find and thing.
In the attached screen shot (taken from a print preview), I've circled one of these dots and pointed at one of the lines. I need to get rid of these.

I'm looking to find how many holes there are in a part ( and then what their diameters are). I tried using
Dim oPartDoc As Document
Set oPartDoc = ThisApplication.ActiveDocument
Dim oCompDef As PartComponentDefinition
Set oCompDef = oPartDoc.ComponentDefinition
MsgBox "there are " & oCompDef.Features.HoleFeatures.Count & " holes"
but this falls down if a hole feature created more than one hole at the same time.

I have an existing extrustion with holes in it. All in one sketch.
I go to add an off shoot from the existing main body in the sketcher. In that off shoot I add a circle
in the middle of the off shoot to represent a hole. So fa so good, or at least I thought. I exit the sketch mode
and my extrustion looks fine with the exception of the hole is not there. Why? Why doesn't Inventor recognise the
circle sketch as hole geometry like it does in the originally created sketch?
In Solidworks, given this same scenario, would have recogized the circle as a void and thus created a hole.
I ended up deleteing the hole out of the main sketch and doing a seperate hole cut feature. I am sure I am missing something and in the process of learning would like to know if indead I did not do this the correct way.

Basically I’m trying to create a circular cut in a flat pattern for a hole made in a rolled piece of sheet metal.
I have created a "case" (this is what we call it) to mount an axial fan, it will require holes for mounting the motor plate. When I create these holes in the rolled case assembly they appear to be fine, but when I flatten it they are turned into two sets of semi-circles or ellipses.
This is only a problem when we run the parts on our Laser; the laser will attempt to start the cutting at the end of each of these "semi-circles" causing a hotspot where the two semi circles meet. This causes the hole to be slightly smaller than intended in this area causing great difficulty inserting bolts, they normally require drilling.
Our material thicknesses vary from about 3mm to 8mm.
I’ve included a crude example of what I’m trying to achieve. To really see what I mean, place the file into a Drawing file and zoom into the hole. I couldn't add the file, with only 3 features the file was 5mb in size.
By the way, I have a temporary solution, it's just a little complicated. (My solution: use square holes first in the un-flat, use the diagonal lines from each corner of the square in a sketch on the flat pattern to place a circular cut on its mid points.)

I have a couple of quick questions about dimensioning holes in drawings .
First, if I have a hole in a rod or shaft so the surface isn't a full circle I get the dimension as a radius. Can I change it to a diameter?
Second, in a model, how do I dimension or measure to the edge of a round rather than to it's center? In SW I could hold the shift key while selecting, is there a similar method here?

I have a cabinet that we make, and we put some holes through the sheet metal skin of the cabinet at the assembly level. I use iLogic to turn these holes on and off, depending on configurations.
Sometimes when switching between configurations the holes that were suppressed will disappear from my model and leave me with just the original sketch. So my iLogic rule errors because it can't find the hole feature.
I am using planes based off of the origin planes to define an axis that I use as my hole center line. And I then make a sketch on the XY origin plane to create a point for my hole. So everything there is independent of the cabinet model.
