AutoCAD Inventor :: Create Closed Profile In VBA?
May 29, 2003
How can I create closed profile in VBA Suppose this profile includes Line and Spline See attached code in vb
Later I cannot create Extrude feature because previously created profile is open (consists of two separate curves)
How can I join together points in profile which belongs to separate curves to get one curve.
Dim t As Inventor.TransientGeometry
Set t = ThisApplication.TransientGeometry
Dim c As Inventor.ComponentDefinition
Set c = ThisApplication.ActiveDocument.ComponentDefinition
[Code].....

Which one of these methods insures that there will be no error, or bug on closing the sketch profile in all the future versions of inventor? One is simpler than the other (no line on top of line, no need to make extra construction line). I'm fine either way, i just want to know which one is the SAFEST FOR LONG TERM PART FILE STABILITY.

The attached profile is a section from a solid. I would like to create a closed profile in order to extrude the shape into a solid. The polyline command and splinedit don't seem to do the trick.

I am working C3D 2012. I have a proposed alignment and profile design by another firm that I had to tranfer into C3D. I had no problem getting the horizontal alignment to display from a text file. I tried to do the same with the profile by using the 'create a text file and create the profile from file' command. I got the POB, PI's, and POE to display. I then defined the VC. I wanted to verifiy that the profile was indeed accurate compared to what we were provided. So I tried to execute a profile report PVI Station and Curve Report - I keep getting an error that "No FG profiles in dwg".
I know the Proposed profile is indeed set to proposed in the properties. I have noticed that the icon next to the profile I create from the text file is different than the profiles created from scratch.
Is there a way to convert this profile to be recognized as a FG profile?

The intersection wizard makes dynamic EOP profiles based off of the cross slope from the centerline. Well the intersection tool doesn't always work with funky intersection layouts. Is it possible to manually create a dynamic EOP profile based on the cross slope from the centerline profile?

We have an engineer who is taking an existing surface and wants to show a proposed road 2" higher than existing.
I told him to simply adjust his assembly for his corridor to account for the 2" difference, but the County agency needs to see a profile.
My questions:
1) Is there a way to easily copy a profile made from a surface and "convert" it to a proposed profile? If we copy and explode, it turns into hundreds (thousands?) of tiny pline segments and it would be a mess to convert all those to a profile 1 by 1. If we make the corridor, and choose "profile from corridor", we do not have an option that could be used to represent the centerline.
2) Other than loss of dynamic updating), would it make sense to adjust the assembly so the top surface would be accurate, then copy the profile, explode the copy to a block and simply shift that (as essentially basic linework)?

Trying to us SURFPATCH to create a surface from a closed 3d poly (with SP1.1 applied)
The 3D poly on the left worked correctly, but when trying SURFPATCH on the right (axe head shape) the resulting surface id rectangular - why? looks like I will need to revert to EDGESURF - for now

I have used PEDIT to join multiple polylines, which now appear as polylines. But when I use QSELECT to show all open (non-closed) section, one polyline still shows up as open.
I've attached the file I'm working on. The polyline in question is the green outline on the object on the right.

I am trying to import a complex curve from autocad lt (in my case an airfoil), to create parts. I have drawn the curve in autocad lt as a polyline. Autocad lt treats the curve as a single object, and seems to understand it as a closed loop.
When I import the curve into Inventor lt, Inventor treats the curve as a series of unconnected line segments. What can I do in either Autocad lt or Inventor lt to get Inventor to treat the curve as a single object, so that I can then extrude it?

I am making some fairly free form sketches using lots of 3-point arcs that ultimately need to be closed loops so that I can extrude them. Although I have always been letting one arc snap to another at the end of the process I seem to have trouble closing the loop. It does not seem very apparent how to find the points that are not properly closed and I wind up struggling with the Close Loop function. Is there an easy way to tell where the problems are in a profile? I have tried showing all constraints, but that doesn't necessarily give me the clues I need.

I'm designing a lift truck with a "chain over" lift - the lift cylinder has a sprocket mounted on the end of the rod, and the chain is grounded on one side. The other end of the chain is mounted to a lifting carriage so that as the cylinder extends and pushes the sprocket up, the chain rolls over it and the carriage moves up (at twice the speed of the cylinder). This is nothing new - it's pretty much how every single fork truck in the world operates.
My question is this: can I use the roller chain generator to model this chain, or should I model the links and array them along a path? My thinking is that if I can use the chain generator, I should be able to animate the chain using Dynamic Simulation. But the chain generator seems to require a minimum of 2 sprockets in order to work - there's no way that I can see to have a "non-looped" chain or any way to just ground the end of the chain.

is there a way to use vb to add closed sketch loops to an existing feature?
I am trying to create a parametric template for a fan guard assembly, complete with drawings.
I am using an arrangement of circles defined using some linear sketch patterns as the cross-section of a revolved feature. Using ilogic/vb, I want to automate the number and spacing of items in the linear pattern, and then update the loops selected for the revolved feature.
I have found code on this forum (courtesy of Curtis Waguespack) that I can use to select all closed loops and create a feature. I can apply this code to create a NEW revolved feature, but I haven't been able to figure out how to use it to UPDATE an existing feature.
I need the feature to UPDATE rather than create new to maintain links in my assemblies and drawings.

I'm just wondering is there a possibility to select all closed profiles from a sketch to make an extrusion or revolve with a shortkey instead doing that manually with the mouse for each profile? Something like CTRL+A

I am having an issue with 2014 not releasing memory when assemblies are closed.
After a dozen saves the saving process is noticeably slower and a task will appear on the application bar (image 1). During the save all 4 cores will be at 100% (image 2). Eventually IV will have eaten 8 of my 12 gigs of ram and windows will inform me to "save open files and close application" due to insufficient ram. At this point I save (albeit slowly), close all open assemblies, and the allocated ram decreases by ~5%. Then restart IV to begin digging the hole again.
Edit: The assembly is large but not giant; 300 unique parts, 2000 components.
My coworker does not appear to have this issue. We are using identical application options and I do not have 'Quick File Open' enabled (App Options/File).
Running Win 7 (x64) and Build 170, Release: 2014RTM.

I just completed a sketch for a simple part I'm working on. It contains some arcs, lines, and rectangles that I've drawn. When I went to extrude them to make the sketch 3D, not all of the shapes I created could be extruded, presumably because in my sketch the lines/arcs did not come together properly to create a closed shape.

I am working on a profile of a ditch and I want to create an enlargement of a portion of the profile. What I would like to do is shrink the vertical scale of the portion of the profile I want to focus on, creating what looks like a stretched view of the profile.
This can be accomplished by creating a block and shrinking the Scale X, but is there any way to do this feature with a viewport? (Creating a block of the profile isn't the solution, especially if I need to edit it later.)
If not with a viewport, is there any other way I can do this?

I have collected points across a 500m distance with easting, northing and height values. This line of points is measuring a stepped slope of a field.
I want, if possible, to create a profile (something that looks like a slice of the slope, so that the steps and profile of the slope is clear.
Can this be achieved? Will you be able to guide me through the process?
