AutoCAD Inventor :: Copy Assembly That Has Subassemblies Within It?
Dec 9, 2011
Is there an easy way to copy an assembly that has sub-assemblies within it. Make changes to that assembly and some of its sub-assemblies and have no effect on the original.

The model I have been working on has been trying to change it's colour all day. Finally I had a crash 'graphics adapter stopped working' and when I re-opened the model it had gone all blue. The top level assembly is all blue but the subassemblies are the proper colours when you open them.
I'm updating my graphics driver which should maybe stop the problem re-ocurring but in the meantime I need to get my top level assembly to display as per the colours in the sub assemblies.

I've got a machine designed that has a couple hundred parts - originally built as one main assembly (with a number of weldment subassmblies). The problem is that the BOM is too large to feasibly have on the drawing and still show assembly detail. I'm trying to avoid a multi-sheet configuration.
So I've grouped certain items and demoted into subassemblies. The problem is that all the subassemblies are attached to a main frame- and I'd like to show this frame in each of the subassemblies as a reference. Is there a way to add a "phantom" copy of the framework to each of the subassemblies to that it can be seen? (and the assembler can see how the subassembly is mounted on the frame) Otherwise all these parts are just floating in space on the subassembly (and constraints are lost on the subs).
I'd like to keep the frame on the top assembly, as it may be customized for future machines, while using the same subassemblies.

Have a question regarding multiple daylight subassemblies, don't know if it is possible. So I have an assembly with a trench SA in cut condition and a project to surface in fill condition, I built the corridor with this assembly and most of things look fine. However, there is a short stretch (in cut condition) of the corridor that I would like to modify such that a trench is not provided. I know I can create a new assembly with my desire condition, then create a new region and drop that assembly there, but I am wondering if there any other way to achieve my goal without another assembly.

I've got several assemblys built for a road project. the problem is whenever i modify an assembly by adding a subassemby, some of the existing subassemblies move. they stay attached to the assembly but they disconnect from the part they were attached to. i can move them back so the assembly looks correct but when i rebuild the corridor chances are they show up wrong. i've tried 'move to' and just grabbing and snapping. i can eventually get it attached but not without trial and error. i'm running c3d2012.

I'm trying to create an assembly that consists of two curbs sub-assemblies that are tied to independent alignments with a pavement section in between them. I have been successful in actually creating an assembly with the two curb sections, but I cannot figure out how to define a line or pavement section that will connect one gutter to the other.
I have one curb tied to the main baseline and the other tied to an offset. I have assigned horizontal alignments and profiles to the baseline and the offset. The curbs actually place where I want them when viewed with the section editor. I had thought that I could use the LinkToMarkedPoint subassembly and simply attach it to the gutter of one curb and to a marked point on the gutter of the other curb, but I can't get it to actually work.
Again, the curb alignment and profiles are completely in independent one another, and I need a way to define a pavement section (or just a surface) between the two gutters.

I like to copy an assembly and save it under different number or name but the assembly made of huge number of parts. In order to re-name the assembly I have to go through each part and re-name them first.
Is there a way to re-name the assembly and parts all at once. I know there is a way with "pack and go" but i don't know how does it works?

I often want to copy a design (assembly plus used parts) to some other folder as a quick start for some derived work. I want to be able to work on this copy without influencing the original and visa versa.
The problem is when copying with the windows copy command, the references to the parts point to the original folder. I read that you can use the Copy feature of the Vault for this. But I'm not using the Vault and don't want to.
Pack and Go is also not a good solution because it copies a lot of other stuff and makes a new project file. How can I do this. It seems so a simple operation. But I can not figure out how to do that!

I have created multiple assemblies using my favorite thing - the frame generator, and I want to copy the entire assembly and use it to represent another model for the next customer while still preserving the original assembly. If I recall Vault has a way to do this by using Copy Design. Since I am not using Vault is there another way to do this?

Looking for views on what the best method is to copy a selection of parts in IV 2013 which will result in the copied selection to retain it's constraints ? I have an assembly which I have used the mirror method on a batch of parts, also used the standard copy method and pattern components.

I have a iLogic assembly with some parts and sub assembly. I need to do a copy of this " Generator " to apply the result later in other assemblies. (something like a member of a ipart or i assembly).
Is there any way to do the copy the assembly to a new folder without the suppressed parts and subassemblies (wich are suppressed in the initial main assembly by iLogic rules)?
I tried to use "Pack and go" and "iLogic design copy", but they always bring the suppressed parts and assembly's, to the new folder and which i don't need to apply in the other assemblies.

here's a macro I wrote to copy the filename to the Part Number iProperty for all parts and sub-assemblies contained in a top-level assembly. I wrote this after using a bunch of custom iParts and all the Part Numbers were the same for each part! (my fault of course, but a pain to fix one at a time).
Public Sub SetAllComponentPartNumbersToFileName()
Dim oAsmDoc As AssemblyDocument
Set oAsmDoc = GetActiveAssembly
If oAsmDoc Is Nothing Then Exit Sub
SetAssemblyComponentPartNumbersToFileName oAsmDoc
End Sub
[code]....

I am working on a new concept design for one of our customers. A critical design parameter is the weight of each of several sub-assemblies.
I have an idw of the top level assembly where I have added Parts Lists of each of the critical subs to show the weight of the components used in each sub assembly. I would like to add a line at the bottom of each Parts List that shows the total weight of that sub assembly. I would also like the header of the Parts List to display the Part Number (from the sub assembly iprops).
Is there a way to get why I want from IV? I am currently using IV 2012. I have attached a .pdf mockup of what I want.

This takes a lot of time especially when i have differend wievs to bloon all of the subassemblies, i have to open the assemblies in the three on by one and change the edge color.

I am trying to suppress part that are labeled as "Reference" on the BOM Strutcture and I can't get the program to cycle through the subassemblies. The following code runs through all the components on the top-level assembly but I can't get it to cycle through the subassemblies.
oCompDef = ThisDoc.Document.ComponentDefinitionoAssemblyComponents = oCompDef.OccurrencesDim oOccurrence As ComponentOccurrenceDim oSubOccurrence1 As ComponentOccurrenceFor Each oOccurrence In oAssemblyComponents If (oOccurrence.BOMStructure = BOMStructureEnum.kReferenceBOMStructure) Then Component.IsActive(oOccurrence.Name) = False Else Component.IsActive(oOccurrence.Name) = True End IfNext

We have an iLogic assembly with to parts in it. Maybe to cylindrical parts. The iLogic rules should do the following.
1. Start a Rule after open document.
2. This Rule starts a Rule in the first cylindrical component.
3. This Rule ask the user for a diameter.
4. The assembly gives this new parameter value to the second component
5. Then the assembly calls another rule in the second component to change it with the new parameter
Everything is working fine when the following combinations are taking place:
1. I open up the assembly out of vault or from a local drive or an accessible server drive
2. I insert the assembly as sub assembly in another assembly from a local drive or an accessible server drive
It don't work with the following situation:
- I insert the assembly as sub assembly in another assembly out of vault
Then the user becomes the dialog "Choose a diameter" twice.
I don't know why, but I have the idea it has something to do with the functionality of inventor to insert a component more than once. If you insert a component in an assembly Inventor gives you the opportunity to add more than one occurence after each other.
change that behaviour? Maybe a switch to change that inventor "add more than one occurence" behaviour.

I have encountered a problem with the Tube and Pipe styles.
As you can see, I have a rack assembly with a custom tube and pipe style. A wire as a tube in orange, and a tube support in white. Both have their seperate colorations at a style in the tube and pipe styles editor
When placing the rack assembly into the main assembly, it reverts to the coppor coloration I changed from the original style.
Steps I've taken:
Exported the styles .xml and Imported the styles into the master tubeandpipe.iam
Imported the user created .xml styles into the main assembly file nothing seems to work

I am trying to find the interior volume of an assembly (when am I not?!?!) by subtracting the assembly from a block that surrounds the most of it. Somewhere the assembly has a "leak" and I have been trying to use the Cross Section Analysis to track down where the inside lump is connected to the outside lump to be subtracted. Is there a less time consuming way to dynamically drag a plane across and get cross sectional views?
Even better is there a simple way to animate the analysis plane moving across the block so I can hopefully just watch and pause it when I find a leak?

it is possible to make a constraint that utilized a parameter of a part within the assembly.
For example, if I wanted to use the thickness of a plate, which I defined in the part, could I call that parameter in a constraint?

My assembly has grown (about 50 parts) to where I need to consolodate some parts into subassemblies for reuse and alternate iterations of the basic design.
When I import the original parts into a new assembly, all of the constrains I created are not there of course.
I've tried creating a new empty part and then deriving a new part from the assembly, but I can't add, delete or edit any parts.
I looked at using Shrinkwrap, Substitutes, iParts, Multi-body Parts, and Multiple Solids but I remain confused.
In retrospect, maybe I should have created the subassemblies between the part and assembly stage but I didn't.

I want to be able to control the location/position of a component in an assembly. This is easy enough through the iProperties/Occurrence tab and then adjust the location of the X,Y, and Z offsets. Is this possible using iLogic? I have been unable to find a function to access via iLogic. Ultimately I am trying to translate a component about an axis not a pattern.

The problem is each piece will more than likely be hoisted separately so I would like to show the CoG for each piece, not the combined master assy.is there a way to do this?
