AutoCAD Inventor :: Converting STL File To Solid?
Apr 7, 2013
A customer has supplied me an STL file. It opens in Inventor but I can't measure it or place it into an IDW to dimension it.

I am trying to convert this composite surface into a single solid body, however when I try to stich the surfaces in the construction environment it always crashes. I have also tried edditing the STEP file import options but it still always opens as a composite surface.

I have finally created the shell of the complex surface that you see. This is only a section of the part because I cannot show the whole thing for proprietary reasons. I formed solid surfaces using the network command. The propblem is that it will not convert to a solid because the surface seams are not "water tight." When the network command created the solid surfaces, the surface seams do not exactly match the lines so there are gaps in all the seams. I have tried blending, patching, etc. and nothing works. how to convert this to a solid without losing the outlines and the shape?

We are going from Solid Works to Inventor as our main CAD program and will be converting files to .ipt and .i am. We are moving our file structure into the vault as it is, with some commonly-used components in their own folders. When I convert an assembly, it only grabs the parts that are in the same folder as the assembly. Is there a way to have it look in other folders for components or to have it ask me to locate ones that are not in the assembly folder?

Question about taking an eps file and changing it to a dxf, I have another question. I downloaded and registered the Ghostgum software and also the pstoedit software to change the logo I have as an eps file into something I can import into CAD as a dxf. But it won't let me do it. I have searched the help menu in the ghostgum software for a solution but nothing seems to be working. A warning dialogue box comes up saying the interpreter seems to have failed and cannot proceed. I am attaching a copy of the logo I am trying to convert.

I was given a .sat file from a third party company. When i pull it into CAD 2011 it comes in as a "body". It views like a wireframe object. I can't slice, subtract, union, etc. when i import it to Navis works it views like wireframe. The problem with this is that i can't run clash detection against this part then.
Any way to convert it to a solid?

I have to send one of my assemblies to a customer who has Solidworks I believe, so I thought I would just save the assembly as a step file, but when I try to do this it crashes my system probably due to the fact that I have quite a bit of embossing on one particular panel. Any other options?

I am trying to conver a DWG of a 747 to a IGES or STEP file, but when I go to do so the option export "cad format" is faded out and I cannot choose it. Is this b/c it is an educational version, or am I missing something?

My intention was to convert a 3DS-File into an IPN-File, to use it in Inventor. As I did not managed to do this in Inventor, I importet the 3DS-File in CATIA V5 and converted it into a CATIA-CatPart and from there in an IGES.Then I was able to open it in Inventor and made a IPN out of it.
The PROBLEM: The original 3DS-File had 700 kilobyte but the actual IPN 54 MegaByte !

After finishing a part in Inventor 2014 a want to store it as a STL file. Thats no problem but when the part is saved as STL it measurement don't add up any more. The STL file becomes a factor 10 smaller. So 50mm ends up as 5mm. So thats a problem.

I'm looking for a lisp routine which will 'convert' number of 2dsolid into hatch. Drawing contains dozens of 2dsolids (solids are on one layer, there are also other entities on this layer) which have different colors, have common verticies and edges. i.e. I want to kind of 'join' solids of the same color and convert them into one hatch colored as original solids and placed on existing layer (let it be layer '0' zero for now). Same color solids can exist in few locations - there is a case to make few separate hatches of the same color (all joined solids should be represented as 1 hatch, should not separate after separate hatch command). There is max of 20 different colors (all of them from ACI index). Solids are not crossing themself or other solids (just joining with 1 or 2 verticies).
There are also 2dsolids with 'zero-area' - represented as a line - those should be erased at the beginning (not to have a line-like hatch).
Example drawing attached.

I am using inventor 2013. I currently have a IGES file that doesn't show the surfaces on my inventor drawings. The include all surfaces feature is check but still doesnt show all the surfaces. I just recently imported a IGES file as a soild part but i do not rememeber how i did it. Once I clicked on the IGES file to open and then click options. What do I fill out on the option dialog box that the IGES file imports as a solid part and shows all surfaces on my inventor drawings.

I've created a tie-on-cable marker tag using Loft, Replace Face and Split techniques. After splitting, I turn off the visibility of one of the two resulting solid bodies. File A208P03_Label.jpg shows the results with solid body Solid2 visibility either on or off.
The cable marker tag is then used in an assembly file shown in MI-CA-0261.iam.jpg and a drawing file shown in MI-CA-0261.idw.jpg. The problem I have is that Solid2 is showing up in the idw drawing file when I'd rather it's visibility be off as in the .iam assembly file.

I downloaded the .stl file from here, which is a very detailed model of 20mb size:
[URL].....
it can be opened in inventor and is shown as a mesh object. Then I tried the plugin "Autodesk Mesh Enabler" to turn it into a solid. After almost an hour it produced something of 350mb, but it cannot be opened anymore, it crashes inventor immediately. Are there any settings to that plugin to reduce the number of elements that it creates?
I heard Mesh4CAD is a similar tool for autocad. I am installing autocad now, hoping that it is more powerful for these kind of things...
I just need to take measurements and attach new objects to the model, or can this somehow be enabled for mesh objects as well, without converting?

I want to duplicate a solid body 4 times in a part file. i did that by going for circular pattern. But after creating that, i had to add on few more features. I did that in parent solid body. then I noticed that other 3 solid body is not getting updated. I know in assembly file it gets updated but any way in part file.

What is the best way to get a hole table on a converted SW file. Our Engineers use Solid works and I can easily import the file but when I try to create the hole table in the IDW file it comes up blank.
Do I need to recreate all the holes so they are native to Inventor? or I am missing a conversion setting.

If we require to create patterned holes thru a number of solids, this works great only requiring the one hole feature.
However, once an assembly is created with the parts, (these parts obviously have their own derived individual solids in them) when needing to place a bolted generated assembly to the patterned holes. It won't recognise the pattern.
So I've come to the conclusion that the bolted generator/drop place function really needs improvement for solid body modelling technique. (Mind you, the BG needs a complete rethink because its at about 50% complete).
What I can see needs to be added, is the functionality of the parts recognising the hole pattern. e.g. when using the make components function it gives an option to add a link to the hole feature.
My only other option at present is to create the holes within the assembly file and transfer the hole feature to each part file. This obviously loses the parametric functionality.

I'm trying to split a single solid body into 2 solid bodies. The problem is that the body I'm trying to split consists of two separate pieces. I can split a body when it is a single piece no problem, but I'm having the problem when the two pieces are not joined at all.
When I try and split it on the origin plane it gives this error:
"Creating parting line failed. Could not build this Split"
When I try and split it on a work plane lying on one of the pieces it gives this error:
"Creating parting line failed. Modeling failure in ASM. Redefine inputs."
Or, another variation on this erorr:
"Creating parting line failed. Split feature could not create two bodies. Change the Split Tool so that split feature can create two bodies."
