AutoCAD Inventor :: Changing Template Files In Existing Part File?
Sep 1, 2011
We just installed the new version of 2012 Product Design Suite. I've spend many hours creating great little ilogic dialog boxes to populate iproperty fields using custom iproperties and then automatically place this data on the .idw file when the view is placed on the new drawing. All works great when the part is created with my new 2012 part template and then placed on my new 2012 idw template. The trouble is with parts that were created with 2011 Inventor. Obviously, the old template does not have the ilogic data built into it. Is there a way to upgrade/migrate the part template file from 2011 to 2012 on an existing part?
I think I'm asking for a miracle here, but I have an assembly with 40-50 parts that I created in 2011 and now need to build the idw files for them and would really like to be able have the customized iproperties added to the existing part files.
I recently update the template for my drawing files, change the title block, revision, note....and I can't find a clean way to import this template to the existing files. I tried the Drawing resource transfer wizard tool, but it doesn't seem to be doing anything that I want.
The simple question is… how can we insert a step (stp) part into an existing part file?
The story behind the question is this:
Normally when we get a step file assembly from a customer, if the part has changed, we put our part into Old Versions and save their new step file as our ipt number and replace it in our assembly file. With Vault, in order for us to maintain the history of the part files, we need to keep the original file so we can’t just delete it or replace it, so now we need to figure out how to get a step file into an ipt. The Import command on the Manage tab (with 2013 at least?) does not allow import of stp files just yet.
The only other option I can think of is to put the original part into an assembly with the step file, create a copy of the step information in the part file and use it to recreate the new (step based) part.
Is it possible to update an existing drawing to reference a new part or assembly file while maintaining associated views and possibly the annotation also?
I have tasks which require frequent subtle changes to assemblies. These assemblies will then be given a completely new file name, so it is no longer just a revision change but a new part altogether.
How can you use a template file from your personal files to use it in an already existing .dwg file.
I knwo how to do it if I start the drawing from scratch and I select that template, but I want to put this existing drawing into my personal template file from my documents.
Some times we use standard parts which we could not find in content center. We creat part ourselves. But it looks like standard part in BOM or part explorer window...
I want to change type of part to PURCHASED type and icon like other purchased parts like bearings or bolts...
Is this possible?...
It can be also assembly parts like bearings. Bearings have many parts but it looks only one part in part explorer. This is very good. I want same thing too...
How can I make an assembly file independent from the part files that went into it? I tried converting it to STL then opening the STL document, but that causes problems with what I'm trying to accomplish.
A way to create a copy of an open part by starting from a template part file and recreating all the features?
Is there a simple way to copy a sketch definition from one part to another using either VBA or VB.net? Is there a way to access the browser so the order of feature creation can be copied?
there is a way to change the template used for a part or assembly. The problem is that I created a template to fit my needs but I had to update it and the update doesn't effect the parts created with the old version one. How do update the templates of the files created using the old template?
I'm making progress with my buttons thanks to everyone who replied on here....my next step is to incorporate an image into the buttons (as a branding method within my e-store).
I have an existing image which i wish to use in gif format, and was wondering whether i can convert it into a *.psd file. my main problem is that the background of the image is white, and as i want to use it in my buttons i really need to make it transparent?
I am working on creating a new part file Template. Any useful and productive iLogic functions those are already available.
A while ago, I had seen one that would simply triger when part was checked in or saved. It would check if the material feild was utilzed or forgotten at Default.
share if there are any good iLogic functions that we might benefit from.

Now I'm trying to make another part, which will be aluminium plate that needs to have holes in exactly same points as the motor. My assembly containts both that parts.
What I'm trying to do is to reference in sketch a point that comes from different part (motor).
I could do it by hand, make it look that the holes are on top of each other but then there will be an error which doesn't seem professional.
In some tutorial on yt I have only found that using points one can reference the holes more easily, but it didn't show how.
I am using inventor 2010 sp1. I have a content center part that I want to replace the family template. I am having problems doing so on random components. Sometimes it lets me and sometimes not. I cannot pinpoint any differences or irregularities between the different library parts.
I am recieving the message indicating..."Import Part Invalid"
Here is my process
Open from content center and save to another folder with or without the same name. Open Content Editor right click and replace family template Recieve this message. "Import Part Invalid"
Is it possible to change a Parts Only parts list on a drawing into a Structured parts list? When a new parts list is created and you select the view it automatically chooses parts and greys out, preventing you from actually changing it manually. Is it possible to get around this without having to start a new drawing?
how Inventor Materials are used in your companies, what is your customization level and usage level.Do you use Inventor Materials as they come out of the box ?Do you create your own materials?
Do you modify the properties of existing Inventor materials without changing the material name?Do you show material names on 2D drawings (in parts list etc)?
I created a part, then created an assembly and put the part in the assy. Now I have changed the name of the part but it still shows up as the origional name in the assy. How do I get the name in the assy to match the part?
How can I change transparency of a part within itself or within an assembly? (I.E. leave its original color as is, but changing/"tweaking" its transparency).
Dear Sir, In particular project, when I insert part in Assembly file, It is inserted as a Tube & Pipe run part. so that It is not Grounded automatically. What is the settings by which I can insert as a normal part in assembly file ? I have attached herewith the JPG file also.
I'm having trouble changing a reference part back to normal. It's in a sub nested 2 levels. I earlier had it as a phantom but changed it easily to reference. Now I need it to be normal.
I've tried going into each level to change it. I cannot access it unless I change the BOM to read "Model Structure" since reference parts don't show up under BOM structure. When I click on Reference (it has a little X in it) it will seem like it's going to change but turns back to ref every time.
I went into the lowest sub & was able to change the part to Default through Properties but it just goes to reference again in the main assembly.
After Part is inserted into an assembly and after the Part is changed ( say the length from 16.25 to 17.75), How do I auto change the "Part Number" to match this new length in the parts list?
Is it possible to change the derived part link to another part like you would replace a component in an assembly? My issue is that i created a part and used a derived part within. Well this part number changed and it just so happens that the derived part needs to change as well. I tried the design assistant, and changed the link there but it didnt seem to want to take. I tried renaming the derived part, and opening the file...i get the error but i still am unable to change the link that way either.
I need to change my parts list style for all of my drawings from this point forward. For the life of me I can't figure out how to do this. I have my project set to read-write and I've tried this 10 ways til Sunday but it won't take. There are several things that I want to achieve but I'd be happy with just one of them for now. All I want to do is remove the ITEM column from my default parts list. After this I want to merge rows by part number, etc.

I'm linking an excel file to an .ipt file with iLogic code determining if the Material type is a certian value it will find the correct material thickness. These file work great when working on them thru Vault but when I "Save As Template" and create this file where our other template files are located (not Vault) this fuction does not work. I have realized that I had to place the a copy of the excel file in the same file folder as the template ipt, but even this does not fix the issue.
I recieve this error:
Error in rule: Material, in document: Part6
'MWW Materials (Inventor).xlsx' could not be found. Check the spelling of the file name, and verify that the file location is correct.
If you are trying to open the file from your list of most recently used files, make sure that the file has not been renamed, moved, or deleted.
It seems completly countintutive that just saving the file as a template file would cause this not to work when all files that are required are located in the same file folder. Maybe I need a reference to the excel document within the iLogic code.
I started out with a single 3 dimensional piece i had made using sketches, and split it into two using the split feature under the modify tab. Now I would like to take each of those two pieces and copy them into their own individual part files. I could do this by remaking them, but was wondering if I could simply copy and paste them into separate files.
