AutoCAD Inventor :: Automating Hidden Line Settings On A Per-part Basis
Sep 21, 2013
A large part of my job is creating installation drawings for plants (equipment and catwalks). Usually what I like to provide the installers is a plan view showing the equipment / catwalks with the base pads of the supports visible as hidden lines. If I just turn on hidden lines in a view, then it is too crowded.
However, manually turning on hidden lines for hundreds of base pads (potentially) is a huge time-sink and usually involves going through the browser manually to find them all. What I would like to do is automate the procedure to some extent. Usually there is only 4 or 5 different parts in an assembly that I need to have hidden lines for.

how to make the lines of a reference part that are in effect acting as hidden lines become removed from a view?
We've tried making the part phantom...which isn't right as we need the line representation of the part to be as the reference linestyle...
We've tried changing variables & tick boxes in the edit view dialogue boxes...but nothing works...

Is it possible to show hidden lines in one part of a .idw view while the rest of the view does not show hidden lines? In the attached image I want to show the pull handle and towel bar through the glass in the door. The only way I know how to show this currently is to turn off the visibility on the glass.

In solidworks there's a "hidden line" option that displays a 3d part with all its sketch lines (instead of a regular solid) which allows the user to view all the different sides of the part easily. So I was wondering if there's such an option in autodesk inventor 2013. Currently, to view all the different sides and aspects of a part easily, i have been changing the part's material to polycarbone or some other plastic material; this makes the part a little translucent. But this is less effective than the hidden line vew availble in solidworks. method that makes different parts of a 3d part more easily to be viewed?

Can this be done? I want to go through the DrawingView Object to get at a subcomponent of an assembly and either set that component to have hidden lines (where needed) or no hidden lines.

I need templates with different Part List settings in the same project. The Part List is set either for frame construction or for regular assembly.
I cannot use them both in templates due to Style conflict and should alter the Part List table manually. Is it possible to bypass this somehow?

I made this custom hidden line, here is the defiinition:
*SCADA_FO_HL, - - - -SCADA-FO- - - -SCADA-FO- - - -SCADA-FO- - - -SCADA-FO- - - -SCADA-FO- - - -SCADA-FO- -
A,0.2,-0.4,0.2,-0.4,0.2,-0.4,0.2,-0.4,0.2,-0.4,0.2,["SCADA-FO",STANDARD,S=.375,U=0.0,X=1.0,Y=-.1],-5
It leaves a continuous line at the beginning and end of the line. Is there a way to get rid of that?

I must be missing something fundamental when trying to change a line from a solid line to a hidden or dashed line in Autocad 2000. I use the ltype command then load either Hidden, or dashed ISO,or both, and invariably the scale is way off in that I always end up with a still solid line, after using modify properties. After all that, every line I draw after that comes out dashed. Maybe I should fool with the layers? Is there a basic procedure I should follow here?

I need to change a solid line in a drawing to a dotted line to indicate that it is a hidden line. I know I should use Modify/Properties, I just don't know how to import the dotted line into the properties box.

i have a 2012 version of autrocad and i have a problem with my 3Dobject settings.
when i move my cursor over any object (eg:box) placed in SW iso view,I cannot see the bottom face of box neither the back or right side. The object should become transparent when i move my cursor over it,but instead the object is purely solid. When i want to shell box from bottom it becomes a problem.

I have been looking at posts on automating pdf creation but have seen a lot with programming / VB involved but would like to avoid that if possible. I have also seen one's on batch processing but would like to do them as needed / completed.
I am trying to somewhat automate the pdf creation process. Having them save to a specific spot / folder and having them 'plot' the same view to the pdf would be very beneficial that way we don't have to select print, print to pdf, print this view with these details, save to this folder location. etc.

A way to print DWF files using a batch file or with a command line. We use Vault and publish all our DWF's to an external shared network folder. This is a standard feature in Vault but we now would like to reference and print those files from Baan ERP using a script. Is it possible to do this using Design Review?

I am using Autocad 2013.
I imported two solid models( *.stp) in one workplace. (Drafting & annotation/insert/import)
I am trying to subtract one from another, But one is hidden from another. (smaller one is in the bigger one) To subtract smaller one from bigger one, I need to select small hidden one.
1. How to select the hidden part? I cannot see from outside.
If I have tree view(navigation??), I could simply select one on the tree, But I don't know how to make to pop it up. Instead of clicking icons, I tried to use command, but what each model name is. (I tried imported file name, but didn't work)
2. How to check the model name so that I can use in command?
3. When I use command, I put SUBTRACT - enter , (select object- actually I click on the object) then it shows me "select objects:1 found" but when I hit ENTER, it shows me "no solid, surfaces, or regions selected" How can I properly select the object?
I currently imported two STEP files in one workplace, both are solid. I am working on 3D modeling-solid editing-subtract.

It's possible to select a part in a view on a 2D drawing and change the color of all the lines belonging to that part.
This is really useful, but is there a way of assigning a line color to the .ipt file it's self, so that every time I place a view of that part the lines are automatically set to specified color?
This would also be useful within a single drawing when there are multiple views of the same assembly. e.g.
Part A would always be drawn in Red, Part B would always be green. This would really distinguishing between parts in complex assemblies. (Which I realise can be done manually but I think it could be done faster with less chance of making mistakes.) Currently, I color all the parts, but then if I make an additional view, the new view is all in black.

My part unit length has been setup as millimeter(mm).Once I created a line within 2d sketch by VBA script, the result of length always become to 10 times of value. For example, the two points of line is (0,0) and (0,4). But the result of length measured is 40.
My problem is how to create a line with part document setting?

I have a STEP file which is of a part similar to the rudder of a boat or an oar blade but twisted at the end, and I have to draw the split line to match the profile of the blade. I imagine I have to use a 3D sketch because of the twist and we are guessing that the split line will run down the apex of the blade, but I don't know how to get the 3D sketch to "stick" to the apex (there is no real apex as it's curved).

Is there a way to make an iPart adaptive? I need to make the length of a pipe adaptive in order for it to line up. These models are not saved, but are merely generated for 2D drawings via my VBA.

I've been trying to draw without the command line visible and am liking it. Have been using F2 if I need it while in a command but am finding the text window a bit obtrusive. It also gets hidden when you click in the drawing area.
Is there a way to activate the command line transparently? If you are in a command, Ctrl+9 cancels it.

I have drawn a black horizontal line 100mm long. Under that line a have a 100mm line coloured blue. How do I select the blue line? In AutoCAD 2000 I would hold down ctrl and select the line. Then scroll using the mouse pressing right click to select. I am currently using AutoCad2011. This function does not work.

I used these commands years ago and cant remember what they are. I am designing furniture in 3D and want to view the object at SE Isometric, then rotate an additional 18 degrees, then take a screenshot that will basically give me a block that is a line drawing of the object with lines hidden. This is a question with two parts:
#1: How do I rotate from SE Isometric 18 degrees to get the view angle I want?
#2: How do I take a screenshot of the object that will produce a block with hidden lines?
There are two seperate commands for each of these, I just can't remember what they are.
Attached is a picture of the final product I'm looking for.

In the attached drawing you'll see I am trying to print a wireframe view of a 3D object with hidden lines displayed as dashed...in paperspace with an MVIEW viewport. To achieve this, I created a custom visual style called "3D Wireframe with hidden lines" because AutoCAD Mechanical doesn't come with a view preset that will do that for some reason. Even though the viewport looks perfect in paperspace, and is set to print "as displayed", the drawing prints (and previews) with the dashed line as solid instead.
I know I could use VIEWBASE to create a drawing view with hidden lines set to "visible and hidden", but that doesn't mean I don't want to know why AutoCAD is doing this strange behavior with standard viewports.
