AutoCAD Inventor :: Automating Model Assemblies For Project - Adaptive IParts

Nov 16, 2011

I am automating model assemblies for a project.

Is there a way to make an iPart adaptive?  I need to make the length of a pipe adaptive in order for it to line up.  These models are not saved, but are merely generated for 2D drawings via my VBA.

AutoCAD Inventor :: 2D IParts In Assemblies?

Aug 14, 2013

This is using Inventor 2013 Professional.

I've created a simple iPart and want to insert multiple instances of it into an assembly. The plan is to use a parameter-driven iPart to create multiple variations on the same basic model which will eventually be lasercut.

I've included a sample archive. 2DiPart is a simple part with a couple parameters. 2Dassembly is where I've tried to include this part. I'm able to walk through all the dialogs to place the iPart, and will even see it in the canvas as I select the insertion point. However, after I dismiss the dialog, nothing shows up in the canvas. I'm still able to see the component instances in the project explorer however.

How to best to get multiple instances of a parametric iPart into a drawing that can be lasercut.

AutoCAD Inventor :: IParts In Assemblies And Drawings?

Apr 12, 2013

The attached sketch shows how I originally decided to use iParts in drawings and assemblies.  In assemblies I use the generated iPart, and in drawings I use the "master" iPart file.  I did that because I wanted to keep the drawing linked to the "master" part, to avoid the situation where the drawing would be out of date because I forgot to regenerate the iParts.

The problem is that I don't know how to force the drawing to refer to the correct version of the iPart.  To use the terminology in my sketch, I open X2.idw and get a drawing of X1.ipt, not X2.ipt. Should I use the generated iPart in my drawings?  And, if so, is there a way I can automatically regenerate.  I'm prone to forgetting key steps like that.

AutoCAD Inventor :: Can't Make Individual Parts Adaptive To Multiple Assemblies Without Saving Each Part

May 4, 2013

We use a similar sub-assembly in almost every assembly we design.  So what I would like to do is make a template from this sub-assembly that I can make adaptive, constrain to the proper parts and have it resize to the main assembly.  I've been trying to do this for a few weeks now with little success.

I have seen tutorials make adaptive part templates but never adaptive assembly templates.  Is this even possible?

I know you can't make individual parts adaptive to multiple assemblies without saving each part as a different file and I think that's where my problems are coming from.  Even though I save the template as a different file is it still referencing the original adaptive part in my library folder?  If so, is there a way I can make it not do that?  I may be way off base there too I don’t know.

AutoCAD Inventor :: Model Pipes For Placement Within Assemblies

Dec 23, 2011

I am starting to model pipes for placement within assemblies.I could model the pipe and flanges in 1 part file but i thought this would take too long to create each flange individually so i modeled the pipe and flanges as separate part files and constrained them in a assembly file. How would you tackle this pipe work?

Future pipes will have different size/type flanges on a pipe depending on how it connects.

Is it possible to make the pipe in a single part file with the flange on 1 of the ends and with a command operation then move the flange to the others pipe ends?

AutoCAD Inventor :: Promoting Parts In Assemblies From Stock Sub-assemblies Or Component Groups

Oct 3, 2011

I am working in an Inventor Assembly .iam, I have about 250 fasteners (screws) that are constrained to a flat washer and lock washer. I would like to put them in as a single unit (sub assembly if you will) and then promote or explode them in the top level so that my bom has 250 screws, 250 washers, and 250 lock washers all at the same level, not associated to one another except thru the constraints that were entered in the original assembly. I have tried Promote but that doesn't work because it removes the washers from the original file and I end up with only 1 instance of the assembly. Am I approaching this incorrectly? Is there a better way? I run across this scenario with different components quite often.

AutoCAD Inventor :: Hide Project Geometry From Model Sketch -> DXF

Mar 6, 2013

Is there a way to hide project geometry from model sketch? I am modeling a sheetmetal part where I need to sketch centermaks, part number etc. for laser cutting. I want to use xy planes for symmetry reasons when sketching, but I don't want them to appear in dxf. This is a problem if I create a dxf directly from the model.

Usually I create dxf files from drawing by adding new sheet where I create flat pattern view from the spesific part (excluding machinigs etc, only thermal cut boundaries visible). In the drawing I am allso able to show model sketches and hide unwanted project geometry. Is it possible to include these sketches to dxf?

The issue arising is the individual components need to be called out on the upper level, but in the drawing are all showing up as the same balloon.

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: How To Model Corridors With Assemblies Perpendicular To Profile

Jan 17, 2013

I'm trying to model a tunnel network and I have come across a problem . The problem is best described with an example:

A sort of tunnel - or shaft - has to be blasted in order to make an access between the ground surface and a certain parking cavern. This access will be an escalator and the tunnel will be blasted in a 30 degree angle to the horizontal level. Normally when I design tunnel cross sections (CS) the contractor will blast the designed CS perpendicular to the designed profile.

I drew the tunnel CS with sub assembly composer and created an assembly in civil. I then made an alignment and a profile according to our design. And here is the actual dilemma: Civil draws the assemblies so that the assemblies are vertical and what I need is them to be drawn / modeled perpendicular to the designed profile. Is there a way to do this?

I will attach a .pdf and a .dwg of a surface profile along the alignment created (and tidied up) with civil 3d, in which I have tried to illustrate the problem in case my description isn't clear enough!

AutoCAD Inventor :: Automating PDF Creation

I have been looking at posts on automating pdf creation but have seen a lot with programming / VB involved but would like to avoid that if possible. I have also seen one's on batch processing but would like to do them as needed / completed.

I am trying to somewhat automate the pdf creation process.  Having them save to a specific spot / folder and having them 'plot' the same view to the pdf would be very beneficial that way we don't have to select print, print  to pdf, print this view with these details, save to this folder location. etc.

AutoCAD Inventor :: Top Down Approach And IParts

Jul 5, 2013

I created an iPart of a flat sheet metal with several holes in it. It requires 3 Parameters to be be defined:

- length (user defined parameter which can take any value)
- width (user defined parameter which can take any value)
- hole_diameter

I created a skeleton file with several user defined parameters including length and width.

Both files (skeleton.ipt and flat_sheet.ipt) are placed in the same assembly. I now would like IPart instance to follow along the changes made in the skeleton - but how do I connect these parameters? and if not, what would be an appropriate Top Down approach for including iParts?

AutoCAD Inventor :: IAssembly Containing IParts

Oct 21, 2011

If I put iParts into an assembly, and then convert this assembly to an iAssembly, I can include "Table Replace [My_iPart]" as a column in the parameter table. As the value of this column I can select the individual rows of the given iPart parameter table.

However, I can not make this column be a "Custom Parameter Column". (In fact it seems to me that in an iAssembly I can not make any other types of columns to be "Custom Parameter Columns" either). Also, if a parameter of the iPart is a "custom parameter", I can not carry over this "customness" into the iAuthor parameter table.

This means that I need to insert table rows by hand, one-by-one, which is quite cumbersome. Imagine you have an iAssembly containing only two iParts, each having N rows. This means N^2 rows in the iAssembly, all of which I need to specify by hand. Plus I can not use the "customness" of a parameter of an iPart within the assembly.

In an iAssembly containing an iPart, I would like to

- have a "Custom Parameter Column" in the iAssembly parameter table, which can select rows from the iPart parameter table (selectable values would automatically be all the rows from the correcponding iPart)

- if my iPart has a custom parameter, I would like to have this custom parameter available as a separate custom-value column in the iAssembly

Is it possible somehow? Or is it conceptually wrong?

AutoCAD Inventor :: Automating Hidden Line Settings On A Per-part Basis

Sep 21, 2013

A large part of my job is creating installation drawings for plants (equipment and catwalks).  Usually what I like to provide the installers is a plan view showing the equipment / catwalks with the base pads of the supports visible as hidden lines.  If I just turn on hidden lines in a view, then it is too crowded.

However, manually turning on hidden lines for hundreds of base pads (potentially) is a huge time-sink and usually involves going through the browser manually to find them all.  What I would like to do is automate the procedure to some extent. Usually there is only 4 or 5 different parts in an assembly that I need to have hidden lines for.

AutoCAD Inventor :: Inserting IParts Into Assembly

I created a Ipart with like 14 different configurations now it operates smoothly within the part. Now once i insert it into a assembly it wont let me chance the configuration. I heard there was a problem like this but i thought it was only when you insert a part into a assembly and change it into a ipart while its still within a assembly.

Now my part never was in a assembly. Ill upload it and let me know if you have the same issue. Once i drop the part it doesn't give me the option to choose a configuration and when i click the configuration in the itable it still doesnt change it. Now this is only within a assembly.

AutoCAD Inventor :: Placing IParts In Assembly?

Sep 26, 2013

Subject: Inventor placing Iparts in Assembly (Autodesk Inventor 2010)

Problem:

When placing an Ipart into a project Assembly it will make a copy of that variant and place it in the same map as the Ipart.

So when variant B of Ipart A is selected it will make a copy of variant B in the same folder where Ipart A is located.

Question:

Is it possible to make a “save as” option or another similar manner to save those copies of variant B in a project map of a project assembly?

Instead of saving all the Ipart variants to a single folder. So each time a new project is started they have all the parts in the same folder.

Reason:

I am making a local library for parts that are used for repairs. These parts have many variants and some times need to be customized for a repair.

The current system keeps polluting itself causing the users to loose their parts and accidentally delete the original parts etc.

I contacted Autodesk support and theyrecommended to post this question on this forum. They did mentioned that vba programming could achieve this. I have no knowledge of this type of programming.

AutoCAD Inventor :: IParts Dimension Shortcuts

Oct 21, 2011

I have a wishlist item.  One of my major process-related issues with iparts is the fact getting variables into your table is inconvenient.  Why wouldn't it be possible to put an "Add to IPart Table" option in the context menus for dimensions, planes, features, anything you can put in the table from the table window.  That way you are not constantly moving back and forth between your sketches and your table when you set up an Ipart or Iassembly.  This feature would save me TONS of time as well as clean up my tables.  Right now the easiest way to set up the table when dealing with a complex sketch is just to add all the dimensions, make my changes for each variation, save to table and then go back and delete the columns I didn't change.

AutoCAD Inventor :: Parameters In IProperties - IParts

Feb 14, 2012

I need a parameter from an iPart to show up in my Parts List by using the Stock Number iProperty, then CHANGE with each variation of the iPart (PLATE BC-01, PLATE BC-02, PLATE BC-03, etc). I already have the parameter exported, named 'BOTTOM_A.' Stock number has the expression: '=1/4" HRS x <BOTTOM_A>.'

However, this only works for that particular part. The number does not change when I place a Parts List for PLATE BC-02 and PLATE BC-03. All three have the same number. I found that the number corresponds to the active part. If I double-click PLATE BC-02 in the ipt file to show it, the number for the separate Parts Lists will all correspond to PLATE BC-02.

I've attached an image of the Parts Lists after double-clicking PLATE BC-02 in PLATE BC.ipt. I can include more if needed.

AutoCAD Inventor :: Migrating Iparts And Iassemblies

Residing in this library are iparts and iassemblies. Both the factory and the members.

Question is how to migrate these iparts and iassemblies,.

option 1   migrate the factory first THEN the members

option 2 migrate the members then the factory (pretty sure this will not work)

option 3 migrate both factory and members at the same time

option 4 migrate the factory and generate new members (not my favorite option)

option 5 ?????

I should add that I intend to use task scheduler to migrate the files

I've been working with adaptive parts for a while now so I think I have a pretty good handle on how they work, but I've tried every trick I know and can't get this adaptive part to adapt correctly. When I apply the final constraint, which should drive its length, Inventor tells me it's an inconsistent constraint. If the part would adapt, it should be perfectly consistent. I've attached my work-set, the constraint I'm trying to apply is "Flush:17" under "Side Guard Plate" (the last component in the browser tree).

AutoCAD Inventor :: Make Assembly Adaptive As Possible

Sep 7, 2012

what kind of work flow I can use to make an assembly adaptive as possible..I need to make a machine fixture that requires cut outs for three parts. The fixture is made from a 8" x 5" x 0.19" thk piece of UHMW. I've made the "blank" and it features the work planes I need to place the three parts that the cut outs are derived from.

At first I just started the assembly and placed the parts where they should be and then used sketched outlines to define the cuts. However, since the parts are there they get "cut" as well.

I was wondering if I could make adaptive sketches linked to these parts and then import THEM into the correct plane. I could then use them to define the cuts.
