AutoCAD Inventor :: 2013 IPart / IAssembly In Drawing Causes Crash
May 15, 2013
I'm having an issue with Inventor crashing every time I attempt to follow this exact procedure:
1. I have a drawing open with an iAssembly or iPart in it.
2. I edit a view by double-clicking the view, opening the 'Drawing View' dialog box.
3. I open the 'Model State' tab.
4. In the 'iAssembly/iPart Member' menu box, I select a different member.
Now, it may or may not open the 'Save' dialog box. If it does, then I click 'OK' and poof, Inventor crashes without fail, asking to send in a crash report.
The same thing happens if I start a brand new drawing and attempt to follow the same procedure while inserting a Base view.
Now, I know for a fact that the not all of the drivers are not up to date on my computer, I am not using a recommended graphics card, and I am using SP1.1, not SP2. I have notified my IT guy about this, but he has yet to get back to me. I don't now if/when everything on my computer will be updated. I do not have admin rights to my computer.
In the mean time, Inventor has become essentially useless for me until this issue has been resolved. how I can get these drawings to start working?

I am using Inventor Professional 2012 and I have created complex iparts and iassemblies and I am not able to change the BOM structure of the parts simply because they are intelligent. I require the tables and features that the iparts and iassemblies can create but they are coming up read only and can not modify the BOM information. Is there a way to change the read only aspect of an ipart or iassembly?

What I am looking for is a command similar to table replace, but that will allow for a new part to be created based on a user input. This will need to be done at the i Assembly level to an i Part that is placed within the assembly.
The end goal is to have input boxes come up, ask the user for the values then create all of the associated parts.
I don't need anything with the input boxes, just the part creation.

I am looking for a way to change the parameters of a part that is within an iAssembly. Basically we have tubing with flanges on the end and wish to have an easy way to model varying lengths. I essentially need to be able to have the upper level iAssembly control the flange spacing and cut the tube to length based on the users selection. Due to BOM setup these parts must be seperate .ipt in a larger .iam

How can I display iPart parameters in an iAssembly general table?
On my .dwg I would like to use one detail with a table. The 2 table columns I need are:
(1) iAssembly name (no problems here, shows up in the general table by default)
(2) Length (this parameter value is in the iPart)

Recently upgraded to Windows 7 from XP and changed from a laptop to a desktop. With the laptop I used dual monitors; to date I haven't secured a second monitor from IT for true dual monitors.
Well I have some iParts that I've edited using excel and they have formulas that I can't edit using the standard iPart dialog, but when I click "Edit via Spreadsheet" the window opens off screen. The alt+Spacebar method doesn't work in Windows 7 and the Windows 7 method of shift+right-click isn't an option because Excel doesn't appear on the taskbar and selcting Inventor moves the Inventor window, not the instance of excel inside of inventor.

Inventor does not think an update is required for iAssembly members after changes to attributes on a client feature are saved. In our workflow we avoid rebuild all because it causes subassemblies to change, so we force an update by changing a parameter. Through the API is there a good way to indicate that our change was significant enough for members to need updating?

In a simple case I have an extrusion with some attached seals/weather stripping, all implemented as iParts having their own LENGTH parameters.
RailPart.ipt, Seal_A.ipt, Seal_B.ipt
The goal is to encapsulate these IParts within an iAssembly: RailAssy.iam, where a LENGTH parameter can be input when the iAssembly is placed, causing RailPart and Seal_A to have their length parameters set to the LENGTH provided at that time and SEAL_B having Length set by an iLogic rule to LENGTH - 5.
I've been unable to set up a Custom Parameter Column in an iAssembly table. Is this even permitted?

Setting up a tabulated ipart drawing template. Which is better...one drawing file with a table or individual drawings for each tabulation? Also does one method work better than the other when introducing vault?

I have an iassembly which contains around 500 different members. There aren't any major differences between the members other than parts being Included/Excluded and parts being replaced by similar parts (this can all be done in the table as the parts are all created as one ipart family).
I need an assembly drawing for every member. As the drawings will be very similar, it is possible to just create one drawings then use 'Save as' and 'replace model reference' to create the whole lot. As this process would be very tedious and time consuming, I want to create a ilogic program or a VB macro to automate this process.
Basically i need a program that will...
FOR every line in the table (say 1 to 500)...
look at the currently active drawing...
replace model reference (for 2 views and a parts list) with the appropriate member (whos file name will match it's Part Number)...
save as with a file name that matches the current rows Part Number...
END when all of the members are complete.

I am using Windows 7 64 bit laptop. When I close a drawing just after saving in AutoCAD 2013 64 bit, the program crashes. This will happen with one drawing open, or several. I also had this problem with 2011.
I have been using AutoCAD for 16 years and never had this problem with previous versions on earlier operating systems.

After upgrading/switching my stand alone license from Civil 3D 2011 to Map 3D 2013, my computer is crashing before a complete opening of some larger dwgs (1575 KB). Sometimes I get an Out of Memory message.Other (much smaller) drawings open fine. The switch from Civil to Map was made because we were not using any of the civil bells and whistles that make it unique.
Map suits our needs. We use shp files (data connect) to generate most of our work.I can use another computer in our office that has Map 3D 2011 and am able to open up any of the drawings with no problems. Because I had no issues with Map 3D 2011, I thought moving up to 2013 would be "easy".
We have a subscription and every couple of years try to load up the latest and learn to live with it.Now I am wondering if we can all just go to Map 2011 and forget 2013.

I am experiencing a crash when I try and place an ipart (any of them) into a new drawing. The open file box works but when the base view is placed in the drawing it has an unexpected problem and crashes.
Is this a documented problem , and a hotfix is forthcoming or is this just me and something local to my installation. Normally my install is very stable.

A colleague was working on a drawing yesterday in AutoCAD 2013 when it crashed. Since then the drawing has refused to open in AutoCAD 2013. It also does not open Trueview. It will however open in previous version of AutoCAD. We tried to export it to .dxf as well but they are corrupt. We also tried to attach it to a new drawing as an Xref and as a block, both were met with an instant fatal error and the closure of AutoCAD.
We have tried auditing, purging, resaving, using backs-ups. None of them will open in AutoCAD 2013 any more. The drawing closes without attempting to open with no error messages. It just loads up the default drawing(x).dwg.

I have two tables on a drawing one showing a parts list the other changes to dimensions.
The table to show the dimension changes is a configuration table pointing to an ipart.
iLogic is used to update the ipart but you have to right click to update the Active Member in the ipart to see the drawing update.
Is there a way to automate the 'update active member'? (on the ipart table - this does update the drawing)
I just have the one row in the table, it's purpose was to pass the values onto the drawing (as the part resizes I didn't want the dimensions moving so opted to tabulate them) - hoping they would update!
or
Is there a way to have a table update parametrically i.e. I've tried .csv as a source to the table but can't force an update. This way I could scrap the ipart & just import the values to a table.
The table also includes some txt comments which change with the ipart properties.

I have an iPart that I have created parameters to perform some basic calcs so the values will show up on every member. The parameters are correct for the different member so it appears to be working correctly on the model side. For example I have a parameter called 'CutLength' that performs simple math functions. But when I make the table on the drawing and I include this parameter, I see the formula in the table instead of the value. Is there a way I can have it display the value instead of the equation?

We are just in the process of upgrading to Inventor 2013. While migrating our iParts, the origin work planes from the part part suddenly appear in some of the children. In the browser they show up under the iPart parent entry and will have names such as "YZ Plane_1". The visibility of all of the origin work features in the parent are turned off. In the children I can right click on these work planes but there is no option to turn off their visibility. And of course I can't even turn off general categories of object visibility in the children because that function is greyed out.
Is this behavior normal/new in IV 2013? Is there anyway I can turn off these origin planes in the iPart children?

I have no this problem for version before Inventor 2013, just start from this lates version.
I models a ballet bar assy in 2'6" width with derived sketch, then I used DA to copy all the files with new name in 4'. After that, I tried to open the new files, it crashed itself, no matter I open a part or assemble.
But if I changed the derived sketch name back to its original, everything is fine for new files.
I attahced the zip file, try it. If it crashes, just change file: BALLET BAR 4ft_SKETCH
to: BALLET BAR 2ft-6in_SKETCH
everything is fine then.

I am building a custom batch update for our drawings to take border definitions as well as custom iproperties from a current template and push them into a specified inventor dwg file. I built a form for the users to select the template they want to import into a list of files they place in the form. The program opens the template, get's all the information (iproperties, border defs, etc... using the active document to get the document) then iterates through the list of the users doing the following for each file (also getting the active document to get the items in each file): open, replace border definition, insert any non-existent custom iproperties, save and close the file. It works great when I keep the open visible set to true for the files. When I switch the visible property to false for each one of the files I want to open I get an error similar to this: Systems.InvalidCastException: Unable to cast object of type 'Inventor._DocumentClass' to type 'Inventor._DrawingDocument'. at ---- then my button click event here.
Does inventor technically not see a document as an active document if the file is not visible when opened?

In Inventor 2013 it was easily to switch in a drawing view between different iPart members. Through Edit view => Tab Model State and then it was possible to switch between different iPart members. So it was easy to make a copy in the Vault from only the dwg (from a iPart member) and then change the iPart member. Now in Inventor 2014 it is not possible anymore.

I have a mech/mfg-necessary pattern set on several parts, to the tune of about 90 slots and 500 holes each. Inventor is absolutely sucking it up handling these parts, and the assembly of these parts together is just a complete nightmare.
I have half-hour load times, constant crashes, and to top it off, they're iparts (used in an iassembly), which means I am constantly having to regenerate the whole part family with every change, a process that can take literally hours.
Are there substitute tricks, or display setting shenanigans I can pull? All of the features are individually needed somewhere, but no mgf machine needs all of them present at once.

In my iAssembly, I have placed a weld. In one of the members, I am suppressing the weld. When I change to that member, I get an error "Weld No Spine: could not compute Weld: Possible intersection failure". Inventor complains a little, but it does not show that Red Cross after the member is selected.
Why do I see that even though the weld is suppressed for that member?
Heres a video of what I'm seeing?

If I put iParts into an assembly, and then convert this assembly to an iAssembly, I can include "Table Replace [My_iPart]" as a column in the parameter table. As the value of this column I can select the individual rows of the given iPart parameter table.
However, I can not make this column be a "Custom Parameter Column". (In fact it seems to me that in an iAssembly I can not make any other types of columns to be "Custom Parameter Columns" either). Also, if a parameter of the iPart is a "custom parameter", I can not carry over this "customness" into the iAuthor parameter table.
This means that I need to insert table rows by hand, one-by-one, which is quite cumbersome. Imagine you have an iAssembly containing only two iParts, each having N rows. This means N^2 rows in the iAssembly, all of which I need to specify by hand. Plus I can not use the "customness" of a parameter of an iPart within the assembly.
In an iAssembly containing an iPart, I would like to
- have a "Custom Parameter Column" in the iAssembly parameter table, which can select rows from the iPart parameter table (selectable values would automatically be all the rows from the correcponding iPart)
- if my iPart has a custom parameter, I would like to have this custom parameter available as a separate custom-value column in the iAssembly
Is it possible somehow? Or is it conceptually wrong?

I have several iterations of an assembly. Specifically I have a base of a machine with different tooling for different products.
I generated the BOM by referencing the specific tooling I am trying to detail. That worked. But when I balloon, it references the main assembly. It won't let me redirect the source file to the tooling asm.

Issue between an i-assembly and i-Logic. So, I have an assembly that includes some extra components that are not always needed and therefore an i-Logic rule takes the decision whether these will be suppressed or not.
Of course this is not a problem however it turns out that I miss some info from BOM according to the suppressed parts ...and all these makes sense following the LOD etc.
A potential solution to keep up to date the BOM while you are excluding the needless components is to create
an i-Assembly.
To keep that simple I turned my current Assembly to an i-Assembly and very successfully I excluded various components and of course I included some others by adding extra ROWS.
So far So good
Now I want to apply some dimensional boundaries by using i-Logic rules. According to them I want to allow this i-assembly to jump among these different ROWS that meet the right criteria.
Very rough thoughts led me to the following code...
For example...
If Width > 600 Then
iPart.ChangeROW ("..." , "...") 'Row-1'
Else
iPart.ChangeROW ("..." , "...") 'Row-2'
End if
The Problem is that the above code works fine, for a example, in case that I will place an i-part in my assembly... However I am looking to change the row of the actual assembly that as I mentioned before I turned it to an i-assembly
To make this even more clear I want to be able to manipulate my i-assembly with i-Logic rules while this is open in Inv. I don't want to change rows while this is placed as a component or sub-assembly in an another assembly...
