AutoCAD Civil 3D :: How To Make Contour Labels Visible
Jan 7, 2013
I am trying to make my contour labels visible, indepently of the Visible status of the contours in the surface style of the original surface that I am working on. I have to do this due the final topo looks strange in the borders so I am displaying another contours -that do not have elevation- and make look the drawing better. The problem is that if I turn off the Visible property of the contours, the labels turn off even that they were created in a different layer and attached to a label style with its own layer property.
When generating a line of contour labels with Contour-Multiple, most of the labels are orientated properly but some of them on the line are rotated 180 degrees. Why aren't they ALL orientated in the same direction?
Also, sometimes, all of them will be orientated in the wrong direction such that they are, essentially, upside down. Is this a bug or is there a setting to adjust?
I am using Civil3D 2012 and have a drawing that will not allow me to add Contour Labels.
Unable to create contour labels
Issue You were unable to create contour labels. When you tried to create a single contour label, you could not select any of the contour lines of a surface. When you tried to create multiple contour labels, the contour label line disappeared after you selected the second point.
Im working with 2013 Civil 3D. I have a site with polyline contours that have assigned elevations. I created my surface from the contours but when i try to label them with elevations, nothing. I label them by contour-mulitple with interval. All that is inserted are tic marks at the designated interval.
I have a contour label style that is using metric units instead of imperial. Where in the style or defaults is this controlled? Also, is there a way to tell what the units are from the contents? <[Surface Elevation(Um|P3|RN|Sn|OF|AP|GC|UN)]>
I have my existing surface data referenced into my production drawing. I am trying to label the existing surface contour lines in the production drawing. I only have one surface in this drawing right now, so, I don't believe this is a multiple surface issue.
When I try to add single and multiple contour labels to the existing surface, I cannot select a contour line. I try to click on a contour line, using osnap, and I just keep getting prompted to pick a contour line.
I have a drawing containing a surface with contour labels. There are two tabs representing two separate drawings. On one of the drawings I want to change the viewport color of some of the layers so certain features will plot lighter than on the other drawing.
When I change the color of a layer within the viewport, however, the masking on all the contour labels takes on a color (not associated with the color of the layer they're on, or anything else for that matter). Once the masking takes on the color, you can't undo it. You have to exit the drawing without saving it and call it up again in order to have the labels appear properly.
I have two contour label styles (major and minor) both separate layers. When I bring in a label style (single) for those layers it puts those labels on layer 0. How do I stop this. I wish to have these labels placed onto the layers on which they are created.
So I have an existing grade surface and I am laying out a number of different site designs. I've got all my surfaces from those site designs on different layers each displayed in a different layout. I need to label existing contours on each layout in different places. I've setup additional contour label styles (two for each design, major, and minor) and layers (two for each design, major, and minor). However, when I add labels to my existing surface, they come in on the right layer, but whenever I freeze any of the many layers my contour labels are on, they all turn off. The only workaround I can figure is to make copies of my existing surface for each design option and label each independantly. However, this is inacceptable as far as data management goes, since my one file will be hundreds of megs with all those surfaces.

I have a basemap with labeled contours and the text sizes I am using all look good both in model and paper space, but when I xref the same basemap into another drawing, the xref of the basemap looks good in model space but the size of the labels on the contours from the basemap in paper space look way to small..
i am trying to change my contour label precision from 700 to 700.50, i am working in a very flat area and i placed .25' and 1' contours on my site plan but can only get even foot labels to show. where do i change the precision, i tried in units, no luck.
2012. I have contours from a corridor merged into a full surface. I labeled the contours, then had to rebuild the corridor after the profile changed.
The contour labels all vanished and had to be redone. While surface contours work well for roadway corridors with few intersecting roads. I am not finding them to be useful for parking lots. I am thinking I will have to go back to the extract all contours from model and neaten them up for acceptable graphic presentation, then label them using the label line function and pray they don't change. i.e. old LDD work flow.
The automatic outside boundary also does not work well when updating parameters and rebuilding. The old fashioned LDD boundary from polyline seems to work better most of the time.
just a general question regarding contour labelling. Does it refresh automatically after I modified the labelling setting? My experience is no. Here is what I did, given an existing surface. Go to Surfaces -> Add Surface Labels -> Contour-Multiple at Intervals, I gave a decent interval, labels the entire surface with a few runs. Later on I decided to say hide the contour label lines, so I would go to Settings ->right click on Surface->Contour Labelling Defaults->set Display Contour Label Line to False, click Apply. So this setting will affect all the contour labelling created thereafter, but does it change the contour labels that I already created? If not, how can I change those labels?
I have a drawing with two viewports. One needs to show topography. The other does not. When I freeze the surface layer in the second viewport, the contour lables leave behind a dash. It's on layer 0 so I can't VP freeze without losing other things.
Where do these dashes come from? They aren't a visible part of the contour label. They only show up when the surface is on a frozen layer. The only purpose they serve is to show where a contour label would be if the surface wasn't frozen.
How do you apply certain contour label styles to certain surface styles (i.e. When I have an existing surface i want the default contour labels to be an "existing contour" style). Right now the default is a "finished contour" label style for all surfaces.
I would like to make a thesis about software civil 3d, the concept of how to make contour, if the result is close to the original surface these results affect the accuracy of the data because in indonesia does not yet exist that discuss this. How to make contour 3d civil concept?
I have this contour lines from dwg file (see attached) and I am trying to make a surface out of it. Initially i thought it is already a surface for C3D but i cant seem to follow tutorials. While browsing for solutions from the Internet, it seems it is not even a contour file that can be added in C3D. what is this file and how i can convert it into a surface in C3D?
I am having difficulties with plotting labels on pdf. I am using 2011 map3d. I am struggling with labeling contours. Basically i have shape file which draws out isometrical lines, then i label contours, everything looks nice/works before plotting but when i plot it on pdf, it basically seems to do a selective plotting of contour labels (all the contours are plotted nicely). Some contour areas are covered nicely, some have only few left, but most parts have none.
My drawing is basically large tiff and shape file on top of it. Contour lines are covering slightly bigger area than the tiff file. contour labels that are actually plotted are mostly drawn on the bottom and left part of the drawing (plus they also seems to be somewhat following the vertical measurements, as if they are only drawn to a certain height or so), mostly out of the tiff part, but also partially continue on top of tiff, until are not plotted anymore. When i want to view contour labels on the whole drawing area, i basically have to "dr" tiff to back, altough drawing order is set so that tiff is drawn first and then other are placed. Sometimes it just boggles my mind why CAD acts like this. If it wouldnt draw any contour labels, i would understand, but it basically does it partially/regionally somehow and even then there are those regions, where labels are drawn only partially, but are still drawn.
It has got to be something to do with the size of the labels compared to the screen. At the moment size context is set to "map space" and when i look at the drawing in model, i can see all the labels nicely (they are drawn in absolute units and are not relative to screen). When i look at it in the layout (layout scale is set to 1 mm=1), i can only see lower part of the drawing covered in labels. As i increase the size units, it gradually draws labels to the upper northern part also.
I was suggested to export the contours and labels as a dwg, open it and then plot it, but what happens is that map3d seems to be able to export only 2000 items (labels). I am sure it would work, if i somehow could manage to export all the contour labels. I am going to add a picture also just to give a better understanding of the problem. Polyline marks the tiff image location and basically the black dots are the labels that are being plotted.
The thing is, that it actually copies exactly 2000 labels into text, which seems to be corresponding to the "rasterthreshold" command limit of 2000, is it just a coincidence?
How can I make sure the annotated surface labels spot elevations from my 3d design drawing which is being xrefed into a new Precise Grading Breakout Sheet plots screened?
The Label Style which I created for the annotated surface label spot elevations has all its properties set to be ByLayer for example its color and lineweight. The Layer I assigned the Label Style was assigned to a layer with a color and plot style that should plot any object screened. Color 8 and Plot Style Screened.
What other steps am I missing to assure myself that this Label Style will plot screened in my new Precise Grading Breakout Sheet?
I also made sure that the xref drawing in which this Surface spot elevation has the correct colors and lineweights and Plot Styles in my new Precise Grading Breakout Sheet.
I am trying to create a surface rise:run slope label for our company template file. I have it set using the default values that I want. But right now the text is just 1:1...where we want it to read 1V:1H.
how I can keep the label dynamic to the surface, but put the V & H in the label after the values.?
I think it is normal to want a style showing stationing, speed design stattions, etc.But.... Radii of curves ? Clothoid parameters ?
Why is the reason Autodesk developers think that designers dont want to see this information instead of "add labels, aligments, multiple segments,. etc ....
I want to make contour lines in autocad 2010 map 3d, but dont know how to start and where .
I have xyz coordinates in. txt format , something like this: [URL] .....
I tryed to do with spline, but its pretty hard some times :/. I need something that i can import and let autocad draw the contours, if its possbile (import txt or another format if its possible) !??
I want to make a contour roll and use the developed length option. How do I accomplish this.
The only way I can get this option to be available (not greyed out) is to have a closed loop sketch, if I have only a single line line sketch this option is not available.
