AutoCAD Civil 3D :: FBK Disappears After Wizard Import

Oct 1, 2012

I'm having some trouble with .fbk files disappearing after I import them. I'm sure I am missing a setting somewhere but I don't know where. I have a (slightly clunky) workaround on setting things up correctly.

We went straight from LDD 08 to Civil 3d 13 so it is a bit of a learning curve.

I am trying to use Civil 3d 2013 with Trimble Link. My procedure is to download the file with trimble link and then follow the wizard from there. My .fbk imports fine, but if I need to edit anything I find that it is missing from the folder that I just imported it from.

If I copy and rename the .fbk prior to importing it I can import and edit the re-named file no problem, it just seems to be the initial import done by the wizard that deletes the file.

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Coordinate Shift On DEM Import Vs Mapimport

Mar 8, 2013

Mapimport command maintains integrity of x,y coordinates. Adding dem information to a civil3d TIN surface does NOT.

Detailed screen shot(s) attached.

Detailed:

I am trying to create a tin surface in autoCAD from a raster dataset in GIS. Originally, my raster dataset was in UTM's (Zone 10N), and my CAD drawings were in CA State Plane (zone 2, US feet). Both NAD83. But I have, to date, been unable to get AutoCAD to correctly convert between these two coordinate systems. I thought, hmm.. let's just convert to State Plane in GIS and then add to the surface definition in AutoCAD. I had hoped this approach would 'go easy' on autoCAD as it would not need to do any conversions. Turns out, that does not appear to work either. In fact, it is even further 'off' than before...  I hope the attached PDF illustrates the situation clearly. AutoCAD's mapImport command works great. The surface boundary can be imported and appears to have the correct coordinates. The surface, with the dem added to the definition, however, does not. It is shifted down and to the left.

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: DWG Coordinate System Transformation?

Nov 20, 2012

My group is trying to convert a dwg from one coordinate system to another. The original drawing contains points, blocks, etc. in 1 system and we need it in a different one. We tried attaching the dwg to a new map with the new system using a layer query, but this did not appear to bring in the objects into the new system.

"Structures" is in the original system (OR83-NF), "StructuresHarn" is in the desired system (ORHP-NIF)

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Coordinate Transformation Results

Feb 21, 2012

I am using Civil 3D and Map 3D 2010.

I have some points in a drawing set up in a coordinate system and using a specified point file format, I successfully exported them to another coordinate system for use by our surveyors. I also wanted the pipe route in my destination drawing so I created a shp file from a polyline representing the pipe route in the original drawing using Map 3D Export. When I imported the shp file into my destination drawing there appears to be a slight horizontal difference from the point locations. The shp file doesn't land directly on the points.

To try another comparison, I ran a query on the pipe route to perform a manual coordinate system transformation. The result of this is the exact same as the shp file.

My questions are, which method (exporting points vs. shp files) results in the correct coordinate transformation and why are they different? When exporting points I am not using any specific transformation settings, I am simply selecting the destination coordinate system. When exporting a shp file, Map 3D creates a prj file from the specified coordinate system in the drawing. Are there any other settings I need to adjust to get the same result with both processes? The only thing I can think of is I only have the coordinates out to 4 decimal places in my point file format, do I need to go out farther?

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Data Connect And Transformation Settings

Jul 29, 2013

I have geotif images that I've purchased from Washoe County GIS. They have world files that work great with data connect. That is, as long as I want to work at sea level. We have a Combined Factor mandated by the County for all record maps. it's a simple grid to ground factor. I can set this factor in the drawing settings and import my sea-level coordinate files just fine. The pboblem is that I can't get the Data Connect to work with the transform settings. The problem is the same with Geotif files and SHP files. I've tried using an x-reference drawing to insert the Geotif and then scale up the geotif but the imagery doesn't scale up.

Is it a program bug that keeps Data Connect from recognizing the transformation settings?

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Import Survey Data Default Point Group Styles

When you use the Import Survey Data wizard it automatically creates a point group that goes to the top of the list. This used to be created with a standard point style and description, but something has changed and I'm getting a different symbol and label that I definitely don't want as the default. I would think that this would be controled by the CreatePointGroup settings, but that isn't working for me. I can't find any other settings that would override or control this.

AutoCAD Map 3D :: Image Coordinate Systems Transformation And Rotation?

Apr 1, 2010

I have some UTM images that I need to convert to State Plane. If I import them into map with raster design and export them to the state plane coordinate system, they work just fine, but I can't figure out a way to get rid of the black wedge that it makes along the edges of images.

If I query them in using map I can transform the coordinate system, but then every time I open the drawing it takes like 5 minutes just to open.

What has everyone else done to use multiple images in a drawing and transform or convert the coordinate system of the images?

AutoCAD Map 3D :: Import Point Data With Object Data?

Jan 20, 2011

how to import point data that has Map Object Data also attached to it? "import it by attaching to a data source".

Example: I have a bunch of manholes. Each MH has X,Y,Z, but also Type, Invert Elevs., Pipe Sizes, Pipe Materials, Pipe Directions, Structure Type/Material, etc. etc. etc. I may have point data representing MH's, airport runway ends, trees, anything you can imagine, with all kinds of data imaginable.

I want to import this data directly into Autocad/Civil 3D as either Autocad points, lines, or closed polylines (I also have utility lines, parking lots, etc.- all with data associated with it), all with the data attached as object data. I know that anything more complex than points might be hard to explain here, so I am hoping at least for a solution on how to import points - I have 99,999 MH's and obviously I don't want to have to type all that data in one by one.

I basically suck at using sql server. I can get around using the Map workspace and the different tabs. I have never used FDO, and I am not even sure what it is.

I fooled it today by creating 99,999 Autocad points at the correct XYZ, attaching the correct object data to them, then exporting as a shp file. I went into the shp_name.dbf file and edited it to add the data I wanted by cutting & pasting from Excel. then I re-imported the shp file. but, this is a workaround at best.

Surely Map can import objects and their associated data fields, all populated with valid data! all I need is to know how to do it. I mean, if this is not something I can do directly using Map commands should I take the money I earned by surveying 99,999 MH's with my GIS data collector that allows me to assign 101data fields to each object I survey, and buy something better?

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Using Transform Coordinate System And Data Shortcuts?

Mar 21, 2012

We are starting a project that we will be preparing a site grading plan for.We are being provided with an ALTA Survey drawing that is on state plane coordinate system, and the existing topography that I will be using for my existing surface is on a UTM coordinate system.

The site grading plan needs to be on state plane coordinate system that the ALTA Survey drawing is on.

I haven't done it before but I understand you can use Map 3D and take drawings that are on different coordinate systems and have them line up properly.

If I have my existing surface in a UTM coordinate system and want to data shortcut it into my site grading plan that's on state plane coordinates, will that work?

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Import Point Data For Each Point Includes Hyperlink

Jan 17, 2013

I have a database of points I am trying to import, and the point data for each point includes a hyperlink.  I've created a set of custom User-Defined Property Classifications for all the data types in the point database, and I've created a point file format to use to import the points.

It's a database of existing curb ramps, the data includes things like widths, slopes, some text, and a hyperlink to the Google Streetview at each ramp.  I've created a custom point label that will show the data I need to see at each ramp.

All goes great except that the import fails because of the hyperlinks.  I've tested it by removing the hyperlinks from a small test portion of the data set, and the test points are then successfully imported.  I suppose I can delete the hyperlinks from the entire database, but if there is a way to include the hyperlinks in the point import I would prefer that.

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: SHP File Data Connect Imports To Wrong Coordinate System

Jul 11, 2013

When the attached shape file (change soilmu_a_a.txt to .shp) is imported using MAPIMPORT the data aligns with other imported georeferenced raster imagery (said imagery was imported using the MAPIINSERT command).  If the same shape file is imported using the data connect tool it shows up in a much different location (see word document).

The drawing coordinate system code is "UTM83-18F" and the data was downloaded from the Web Soil Survey's data download with the identical coordinate system (see attached readme.txt).

I prefer to use the data connect option when importing this type of shape file because I can label them all using a theme and use stylize the data for visualization/presentation.

As an aside, I have found that data connect does not automatically transform data coordinate systems to match your drawing coordinate system as advertised.  I've used the edit coordinate system to no avail; however, again when the file is imported using MAPIMPORT and saved as a drawing (with native data coordinate system) and then that drawing is queried from a drawing in a different coordinate system it seems to transform the coordinate system just fine.  Is this a problem with data connect?
