AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Import Point Data For Each Point Includes Hyperlink
Jan 17, 2013
I have a database of points I am trying to import, and the point data for each point includes a hyperlink. I've created a set of custom User-Defined Property Classifications for all the data types in the point database, and I've created a point file format to use to import the points.
It's a database of existing curb ramps, the data includes things like widths, slopes, some text, and a hyperlink to the Google Streetview at each ramp. I've created a custom point label that will show the data I need to see at each ramp.
All goes great except that the import fails because of the hyperlinks. I've tested it by removing the hyperlinks from a small test portion of the data set, and the test points are then successfully imported. I suppose I can delete the hyperlinks from the entire database, but if there is a way to include the hyperlinks in the point import I would prefer that.
It was in Feb - March 2012. I was then using AutoCAD Civil 3D 2012. I had faced a problem of getting ground data for a large surface by using satellite imageries processed by some government wing of USA (NASA?), have lost track of it.
When you use the Import Survey Data wizard it automatically creates a point group that goes to the top of the list. This used to be created with a standard point style and description, but something has changed and I'm getting a different symbol and label that I definitely don't want as the default. I would think that this would be controled by the CreatePointGroup settings, but that isn't working for me. I can't find any other settings that would override or control this.
how to import point data that has Map Object Data also attached to it? "import it by attaching to a data source".
Example: I have a bunch of manholes. Each MH has X,Y,Z, but also Type, Invert Elevs., Pipe Sizes, Pipe Materials, Pipe Directions, Structure Type/Material, etc. etc. etc. I may have point data representing MH's, airport runway ends, trees, anything you can imagine, with all kinds of data imaginable.
I want to import this data directly into Autocad/Civil 3D as either Autocad points, lines, or closed polylines (I also have utility lines, parking lots, etc.- all with data associated with it), all with the data attached as object data. I know that anything more complex than points might be hard to explain here, so I am hoping at least for a solution on how to import points - I have 99,999 MH's and obviously I don't want to have to type all that data in one by one.
I basically suck at using sql server. I can get around using the Map workspace and the different tabs. I have never used FDO, and I am not even sure what it is.
I fooled it today by creating 99,999 Autocad points at the correct XYZ, attaching the correct object data to them, then exporting as a shp file. I went into the shp_name.dbf file and edited it to add the data I wanted by cutting & pasting from Excel. then I re-imported the shp file. but, this is a workaround at best.
Surely Map can import objects and their associated data fields, all populated with valid data! all I need is to know how to do it. I mean, if this is not something I can do directly using Map commands should I take the money I earned by surveying 99,999 MH's with my GIS data collector that allows me to assign 101data fields to each object I survey, and buy something better?

I have collected point data for the positions of trees using PocketGIS software. The software produces a csv. file with the Northings and eastings of each point surveyed to which are attached a number of other attributes (e.g. tree tag number, height, species etc.).
Is it possible to import and plot these points directly into AutoCAD?
Can some or all of the attributes be included (i.e. it would be very useful if the positions could be plotted together with the tag number)?
I'm wanting to use a diffuse colour to alter the iterations in the mesh smooth modifier. I'm using the wire parameters dialogue but am unsure of how to turn the 3 point value of the diffuse (rgb) into linear (1 point) data.

Is there a way to "data shortcut" information imported from a data file into multiple drawings? If so, is there a way to lock the data points "in place" and not be able to adjust the point location/elevation, but allow the movement the text information around within the drawing.
The goal is to have multiple drawings with these data points and be able to move the text information from the style, but not (in a million years) be able to move the data point itself. There may be multiple drawings with these points located within them.
how to show point labels on the points I imported from a .shp file. I used MAPIMPORT and brought in the associated object data but I don't know how to get it to display in my drawing.
I am wondering if it's possible to have a point code automatically add data to a user-defined field either in the survey database or in a drawing. For instance, our surveyors currently will code a catch basin as CB INV2.2 if it has an invert depth of 2.2'. I have a survey point user-defined property called InvertDepth. Is it possible to get the survey database to automatically add 2.2 to that user-defined property or does that have to be manually input? I have an expression and a label style that will take the elevation shot and subtract the depth number to give me the invert elevation on a lable, but I'd like to see if this can be done automatically without having to manually type in the depth on every point that is a catch basin or other inlet.
I've looked into the description key-set's parameters, but they seem to be mostly for display purposes and writing a full description.
I'm working on a topo survey and the contours are crossing each others (See attached pic) and what I did was edit the surface by adding points. I know that these points are fake, but how does this affect the terrain surface for design point of view? I did try swapping edge and deleting lines but makes it worse. Also as you can see in the pic, I don't see the added points like it did back C3D 2008.
I have an excel sheet containing alignment coordinates i.e
Station Number Northings Eastings and Tangential Direction
I wanted to export these into Civil 3d so that I can work with the info. What format would I save my excel document? is it 'text (tab delimited)' or 'csv (comma delimited) or formatted text (space delimited)?
I've tried all the above but I keep getting an error message from AutoCAD that point files not in right format
2012 SP2. I get this very descriptive message while trying to create a point cloud: The following error occurred processing the point cloud data: An error ocurred in data processing.
I've previously created point clouds from the same data (ENZ comma delimited) without a problem. I believe this was done before applying SP2. Any problems creating point clouds since SP2?
I am trying to speak 'surveyor' without the background in the data collectors. We have a new surveyor who uses Terramodel. I have an LDD parcel database that the surveyor is requesting to be translated to points for stakeout.
I can export the parcels to xml and Terramodel will import them, but it seems to import them as lines. The Surveyor wants points to be able to do a map check in Terra Model and program the data collector. I am not seeing a create points from parcel function anywhere from 2004 to 2012.
Civil 3d 2012..I used 3d orbit, it crashed. My points, point groups and newly updated description keys are gone.I have looked at all my backup files etc, and they do not want to display.
Im still new to Civil 3D and i would like to know how to connect inported points using 3D polylines. I imported my points from Excel in a PNEZD format. How do i get the 3d poly line to snap to my points so I can Connect them? someone mentioned using a feature line to connect the points but im not sure how or what that would do.
In uploading the Point input data into the AutoCAD Civil 3D 2013 software program, is it possible for me to add more Point Attribute items after Point Number, X, Y, Z? I need to have the chemical results/data attached to the (sampling) Point that has the Point #, X, Y, Z - like Point Number, X, Y, Z, Arsenic, Lead, Mercury in the input .txt (or .csv) file.
How to set a default point style for point groups? Whenever I import survey points, I always put them into their own point group, so I can display each day's worth of survey data differently. For some reason, the point style always defaults to a certain style (our control point symbol). I'd like it to default to Basic, so I don't have to change this every time. Is it a template drawing setting somewhere?
First time importing into 2012-have csv file that I imported. Coordinates land in right spot. Local system-No transformations/State Plane zones attached. When I look at them with tracking everything is okay. When I export the points they are the same I imported.
I have been provided with Surveyed Utility Locates along an Existing Roadway. These are provided to show conflicts between the New Storm Sewer System and Existing Utilities such as Water, Sewer, Gas, Elec, etc. The survey however is incomplete as it was prepared a few years ago and the Storm Sewer has just been designed. Yes, I can create points and provide them to the County Surveying department. However, before this is done, I must provide an easily-understood format of the new survey locations to the County Project Management.
To provide a Point Table which references the Surveyed Points' location in reference to the roadway stationing (Alignment). I have attached what the point table is to look like.
I am unable to find the desired data reference in the currently provided data field selection. Am I just missing it or is this a "Wish List" item?
I am trying to get my points to displey the " mark from our descriptions. The description keys are set to $* and I have tried changing the Label Style from full description to raw description. I cannot get any information after the " mark from our field data. LDD used to put it in, but civil 3D truncates the information. I know I can do a find and replace in the .csv file, but would rather not have to continually edit the .csv file. Where the setting in civil 3D is to allow this to happen? I have even messed with the Point File Formats to no avail.
I am trying to get point 1234 to show a label that says Point #1234 and then in a grading plan have that same point show up as a spot elevation. I have tried making two point groups "Point #" and "Spot Grades" which include the same points in them with two different label styles for each group, however the point seems to only want to take one label style at a time.
I am trying to have a block scaled on import baised on the elevation of the point. I already use description key sets to scale blocks in import to parameters added to the code libary, for example; "Pole 0.31" draws a circle with a diameter of .31 meters.
Is there a way where I would be able to scale a block on import based on the elevation of the object? For example, a point's elevation is 1.7m, so on import it would scale a block by 1.7 on the x/y axis. Ideally if I were to modify the datum of the points the blocks would automatically scale, but that is more of a pipe dream.
We import the data from a trimble r8 rover and convert the file to a FBK file before importing the survey data.
I have a bunch (hundreds, so manual input not an option) of X,Y points without elevation data that I would like to import into a DWG and assign an elevation that is based on an existing surface object. Is there a way to do this for a point file? The command for inserting individual points would be the "Create points - Surface > Random" but I don't see a way to do this in a batch type method where i have my PNE formatted input file to just move the points to sit on the existing surface.
Question 1: Is it possible to change a Survey COGO point to a regular COGO point so you can edit the datum?
If not:
Question 2: Is it possible to transfer the survey database from one office to another so the end office can make datum changes to the survey COGO points. Will the link between the file and the database still apply?
I need to design a walking track 1 mile (5280 feet) from a starting point and finishing at the same point. I need to go around buildings, ponds, etc. What is the best way to tackle this? I thought about 16 splines at 330', but as soon as the spline is moved the distance changes.
I need to find a way how to insert a point or a * on the center point of a hole and put it on a different layer. The reason for this is - I am a CAD tech for a welding shop and we cut parts out of steel and we use the dxf file format for our plasma table to cut parts. For example : if i have a 1 inch thick plate and want to put a 3/4'' hole in the plate the hole will be distorted because the hole is smaller than the material thickness. For these situation we can use the plasma table to burn a point or a dot on the center point of the hole. But to do this the point or dot must be on a different layer in the dxf.
