AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Create A Layer Filter That Excludes Both Civil Layers And Xrefs
May 3, 2012
I want to create a Layer Filter that excludes both Civil Layers and Xrefs.
I have created one that excludes Civil objects (Excel Civil.jpg) but when I add a filter for excluding xrefs as well the Civil objects appear in the filter again indeed all the layers are included again (Excel Xref.jpg) if I invert the filter nothing is displayed.
I often work on drawings which have multiple xrefs, each having up to 100 Layers or more, so the layer manager can be a bit difficult to trawl through to find a local layer to select.
I know how to create a local layer filter using the code ~*|* from the new filter area in layer manager.
Ideally all I want to have to type in is: LOCAL and then the local layer filter would be created, with the filter name being Local-Layers (or similar).
In my layer properties manager. If I insert an xref I get all kinds of extra layers. I have to scroll through a long list. How can I create a filter to not display these?
I have been working on an extensive template and wanted to add some layer filters too it. I was wondering if there was a list anywhere that outlines what different characters mean to the fillter? What I mean is... I know that ~*|* excludes xfref layers because ~ means 'not' and * means "anything" and | is the character we are looking for. But what are all the other things that filters understand?
On one of the machines here we seem to have lost the functionality of the layer filters. When a group filter is created, it shows in the list, you can add layers to the filter, but when you view the filtered layers, its all the layers. Also, when there are unreconciled layers and you navigate to this filter, it shows the entire layer list. Is there some setting that may have been changed?

In my template, is there a way to setup a layer filter or layer state to automatically plot a different viewport color when a new drawing is created and viewports are made? Note, my template does not have viewports premade.
I've set all my Existing and Proposed Utilities to use the WV Miss Utility colors, but I designated either pale (odd color#) for existing and bold (even color#) for proposed so that in model space there's a visual difference. See a few examples below:
Our Civil dept doesn't use colors, but our Utility dept does occasionally especially when Aerials are used.
When we create layouts/viewports in a drawing, it would be nice to have viewport layer colors automatically be set to plot black or gray or be on/off depending on existing conditions sheet or proposed site plan sheet. The only way I know of is if I would set up viewports inside my template with VP Color Overrides preset and/or VP freezes for certain layers, which I'm hesitant in doing.
When I open layer manager, it doesnt show my layers, it is just all blank, not even a "0" layer. I can click in the area and it shows the layer but that is it. I searched for a fix but was unable to find a fix. I have updated my graphics card driver but that didnt fix it. I have attached a screen shot to show what it looks like. I am running C3D 2009.
I've used E- for Existing and P- for Proposed for my layers and/or style names. For Object Layers, I've used OBJ- with modifiers and set the layers inside the styles to 0. This works ok, and Civil 3D objects obviously stand out and are easily isolated thru layiso and such, BUT having styles set to 0 presents a problem when dumbing down a drawing to send to another firm. The C3D Objects that are dumbed down are on layer 0 which isn't good.
We're generating a new template for 2013 and want to gear it towards the National Cad Standards on some level and do away with 0 as the style layer and actually have the style layers set to something other than 0.
My initial thoughts from a simplistic standpoint are:
V- for Survey and Existing features C- for Proposed features
I understand there's many more designators. We mainly do Civil and Utility work.I know V is a designator for Survey but can it cover and should it cover existing features too that aren't surveyed, for example if we receive mapping from someone and want to reassign some layer names? Is C- strictly for Proposed/Design work?
I'm reviewing a template we're working with someone on and they assigned the layers inside an Existing Surface Style to C-Topo-Majr and C-Topo-Minr. They assigned the layers inside the Proposed Surface Style to C-Topo-Majr-N and C-Topo-Minr-N. The only difference is the N for New, between the style layers.
Shouldn't the Existing Surface Style layers start with V-?Just trying to get some feedback on a simplistic approach to Layer naming and keeping with the National Cad Standards on some level.
I am designing a fill volume. I have created my surfaces and feature line. My topos however are on two seperate layers as one is existing ground and the other is engineered ground. How can I get my grading to work using two layers in a grading group?
When I create a new layer and in the same process change the color and linetype it looks like it takes in the layer dialogs box but when you use the layer the properties do not take. I have to re-initiate the layer command and then the layer properties are not what I set them to. Once I re set them at this stage it holds the layer. I've attached 3 images.
1. Showing two lines and layer dialogs box on two new layers (objects look the same) 2. Showing dialogs box after reinitializing layer command (objects still the same) 3. Showing dialogs box and lines after changing layer properties (now objects are holding set properties.
I'm adjusting a photographic image and am using both a filter effect and a layer style in the same layer on a Smart Object. I want to separate the two effects into two layers, so one layer has the filter effect (Nik) and one layer has the layer style (Color Overlay) (with the goal of merging/rasterizing the Nik filter effect with the Smart Object but keeping the layer style unmerged). I can make two layers and move one effect without problem, but the visual result of each effect on a separate layer is quite different from having both effects in the same layer. The Blend Mode for all my layers is Normal. Within the Color Overlay panel, the blend mode is Linear Burn.

When I create a set of sheets from an alignment and I specify my data references etc, I want to create individual drawings for each sheet. The problem is that whenever I do this, it does not export also the base XREFs for the model drawing. I keep getting an error saying - Cannot create XREF's.
Many times when I try to attach a xref and do a zoom extents, I cannot find the drawing. I change my limits to -999999,-999999 and 999999,999999 but still nothing. This seems to be a random problem.

Heard complaints about how XREF's with raster images take forever to load and unload? Any time you select the XREF in the Xref Manager the images process, whether they are turned on or off. When did this behavior start?
While working in a drawing xrefs that are attached to that drawing are getting saved "behind the scenes" by AutoCAD.
Specifically one instance was a user changed his working annotative scale while in model space, and this caused all of the attached xrefs to re-save themselves (you could watch the files update in Windows Explorer). He did not save the drawing he was in, just changed the annotative scale. This is worrisome in that we are still between 2011 and 2012 on some projects and I'm worried that a user opens a drawing from a 2011 project in 2012 to look at something and in the background even though he doesn't save that drawing, the base xrefs will get updated to 2012, forcing an unplanned version upgrade for Civil 3D objects.
I have my Transmittal settings file format set to: AutoCAD 2007 Drawing Format with Exploded AEC Objects, but the E-Transmit will not explode the AEC objects in attached Xrefs. I can't find any setting that would allow this or prevent this. It worked fine in C3D 2012, but it's not working in 2013.

Why my AutoCad 2009 will not let me select new layers to a specific group layer filter. It was working just fine and yesterday all of sudden it will not let me add new layers to a specific filter. Is there a button or command that maybe would have changed that function. Everything else seems to be working on the Layer Manager.
I use a lot of Group Layer Filters so I can turn things on/off quickly. My problem is I have been creating my Layer Filter Group by right clicking on the Layer Group Filter>going to Selection>then click Add> then go back to my drawing or Layout tab and select all of the layers I need then click enter. One day my AutoCad would not let me do that anymore, and even after I click on enter it gives me an error message saying the command is still active. Now from my Layer Properties Manager I can select any layer and drag/drop it into any filter and it works, but I really need to be able to select things within the model space or paper of each layout tabs.
How do I create layers in an adjustment layer and transfer or duplicate those layers in another image ?
I need to transfer the same colour readjustment from one image to several other images ... I have been told to do this in the adjustment layer platform how ever I cannot drag or copy those layers over to the other images I have open and in need of adjustment to the same layers ...
Images shows my layout and what i've done this far
I would like to know how to write a routine to thaw all layers in current drawing and multiple xrefs; then freeze all, then thaw only certain layers globally for a drawing that is open. Such as a dimension plan will thaw only *-BLDG, *-DIMS, *-RD-*, *BNDRY.
I would like to create one that will fit every project which has a different xref name.
I have a drawing with an x-ref in it. The x-ref contains multiple layers which, since creating it have purged out of the x-ref. However when i purge the drawing in which the x-ref is in the layers do not remove. Is there a way to remove these?
Can you filter 3dpolylines to find which ones have a vertex at 0 elevation? I do not see the option in the Object Selection Filters dialog. We have several 3dpolys which would take a while to go through each vertex.
It appears that the Layer Filters functionality is broken again with 2013. Unchecking the "Apply layer filter to layer toolbar" disables the function of layer filters in the tool palette.
I have an xrefernced drg , which i print from a layout/paperspace .I freeze certain layers using VPort freeze in layer properties and save the drg whenever i close and reopen the drawing the layers are thawed in the viewport again.
I am working with a Lidar dataset that is over 34 million points. It covers an area far larger than I need for our project. I have experimented with point clouds and am able to process and generate a surface from the data by applying a clip boundary to the surface. The problem with this is the surface only has about 540k points out the total dataset and it appears that the points have been greatly reduced in density. I am thinking this is due to the way C3D limits large data sets to display only 1.5 million points and thus my surface data is highly filtered since it is extracted from a small area of the dataset. I have tried setting point cloud display to 100%.
can I somehow filter my point cloud so that I can reduce the area of coverage and thus increase the density that is extracted into my surface?
A drawing with hundreds of layers should be simplified for our customer by decreasing the numbers of and renaming the layers (there is yet no target file existing). In order to solve this, I generated group filters and assigned every single layer to them (all printing properties are assigned to objects). The layer groups show the desired layer structure after the transformation (still a three-digit number).
Unfortunately, the LAYTRANS dialog doesn't let me choose layers by group filters or remarks. It seems as all the work was for the birds.
Is there any way to translate my layers using filters or remarks?
