AutoCAD 2013 :: Unlocking / Exploding Xref
May 29, 2012
I have a Mechanical drawing with numerous Xrefs. I need to make changes to the Plumbing layers which is in O-Xref layer. I have tried to bind all Xrefs but cannot bind all of them. The piping is in the O-Xref layer. I cannot explode nor can I Xref-Edit anything in this layer. This is one of a number of drawings but this is the first one that I cannot explode or edit the layer and I have never run into this problem before.
Is there a way that the file can be locked up to prevent editing?

Most of my design work requires me to xRef an existing title block to my paperspace and vport my drawing into my titleblock in paperspace. However, when I attach my titleblock using xRef into my paperspace, the scaling went totally out. Mostly my block comes out way bigger than it is suppose to. The problem is that I have set my designs and block to function in milimeters, so basically it should scale down to the same scale right?
And also, it's quite troublesome to keep going back to my titleblock dwg to edit/save and reload it back in my design. Is there anyway to explode the xRef titleblock? Every time I tried they keep saying its an external reference. Is there any way to go around this so I can edit it without going back and forth?

If autocad is running when I unlock my computer it will freeze. It still lets me close out and save my work, but I am unable to do anything else in the program. Sometimes it will crash my video driver recover then allow me to continue working.

I'm trying to export some AutoCAD files to SketchUp as DWGs... everything comes through fine, but the text (and certain other line-types) won't transfer over. I know that with AutoCAD 2008 using Express Tools, you could do this easily by exploding the text. How can I explode text using AutoCAD 2013, so that it will export as vectors in the DWG file?

If I modify a 3D solid and it is left with two seperate pieces it is still one solid piece, even though there are two parts. My question is: What if only need one of those two sides? If I explode the object and delete the one side I cannot change the remaining object into a 3D solid. It remains as surface object.
How can make an object into a 3D solid after exploding it? I belive there is a simple command like union or some other but I can't remember.

Insert a Raster Image or an OLE object (like a selection from a XLS worksheet).
Explode the Raster Image/OLE object.
=> the Raster Image/OLE dissapears and the frame remains (LINE objects).
I think that these types of entities should not allow exploding.

I have a series of block references in a tool palette which I want to explode once inserted. Simple I think, just set the 'explode' property on the tool palette icon.
Wrong. What actually happens is that in my case where the block refernce is simply two blocks inserted on different layers, the tool palette will insert onto the layer specified, and then explode, moving each block from its original later, onto the layer the host block is inserted on.
For example:
BlockRef_A consists of two enties:
BockRef_1 on Layer1Blockref_2 on Layer2
Using the tool palette to insert and explode using the 'use current' for the destination layer, I get the following:
BlockRef_1 on 0
BlockRef_2 on 0
Both the destionation layer (Layer1 Layer2) already exist in the target drawing.
It looks to me like autocad is importing the block, exploding it, moving it to the required layer.
This doesn't happen to any other entities, if there's a block that consists of a mix of parts, only the block references within it get moved to the destination layer.

Pulling apart a drawing that someone else did, each block contains a set of text that I need, along with the polylines for editing, however, when I explode these blocks to edit the polyllines - all of the text inside the blocks changes to generic terms like "AUX".
I assume that these blocks go to a lookup table of some sort to find their names, but it's not something I'm familiar with - is there a way to get the text to "hardcode" or something? Just force it to stay as it is before I explode the block?

I am having trouble when I import XRef’s and the scaling of lines. When the drawings are importing the hidden lines do not show up as hidden lines. I know this might be a scaling issue but I do not know how to correct this. The XRef drawing is drawn at a scale of 1-1/2”=1’-0” and set to print on a letter size paper but the drawing which it is imported to is set to be printed on a 11x17 but the viewport is still at the 1-1/2” scale and the lines are shown as continuous.

I have a drawing that I cannot detach the Xref. It's not making sense.
When I try to detach the Xref I get a message saying
"Xref xxxxx.dwg has multiple references. Not detached"
I've attached a screenshot of what I'm seeing.

AutoCAD 2013 Windows XP
I have a drawing (Drawing A) that contains a PDF (using PDF attach) with text over the PDF. I then have this drawing Xref'd (as overlay and as attachment) into another drawing (Drawing B). When I print this drawing (Drawing B). The text prints but the pdf does not.
In Drawing A the pdf is on the 0 layer.
In Drawing B the pdf is on 0 layer.
The 0 layer is not frozen and is set to print.
The xref in drawing B is set to overlay and relative (I tried absolute).
I can see the pdf in drawing B.
PDFrame is set to 2 in dwg A and B.

I know DXF files can be saved as DWGs then used as XREFs but that isn't the goal we want to achieve.
We are a big steel fabrication shop and we run a plasma machine that accepts DXF files. What we want to do is be able to draw our parts as a DXF ready for the plasma then XREF them into an overall drawing to assure all of our pieces line up. Each piece will be a separate DXF.
We want them to be XREFs so that if one needs to be manipulated it can be done on the spot without having to reattach a block. The more files you have to open and manipulate the more room for error.
The only way I can come up with is to draw all pieces as individual DWG files, then XREF each one into their own DXF file as well as XREFing them all into an overall file to check that they all line up.

I need to load 11 xref in my project but seems like in autocad 2013 more than 10 xref is not allowed, it keeps on rejecting the 11th reference without prompting any error.
I have tried to save the drawings in lower version and do the same procedure and it works, i therefore conclude that the issue is with 2013 version.
saving in lower version everytime we receive new xref is really time consuming and painful for hundred of drawings.

So we have a frustrating porblem.
When we have a clipped XREF the boundaries are selectable as well as the insertion point.
We want to be able to lock the xref inplace and make it not selectable?

I have made a plug-In for AutoCAD 2013 which reads the x-Ref from a DWG File.
However, I wants to read this xRef Details (with parent child tree information), from an Console or Windows Based Application. i.e. without loading DWG in AutoCAD, Is it possible to directly read the xRef details?

Points began showing up in my xref'd file. When I click them, they select the xref, so they are objects and not artifacts. I can XLIST the points in the xref and turn on/off those layers but in the base file, these points do not exist anywhere.
This is the only article I could find on the mystery dots: [URL]
I tried the solution to COPYBASE, delete all, and purge, but they persist. It is happening on at least two layers.

Updating the attached dwg (Xref),The file Q1 is attached to the file Q5 (attached). Edits are applied to the Q1. These edits are not transferred to the Q5 despite the fact that the “regenerate” button is pressed.
What might be the issue here? How the edits on the Xref files are reflected directly to where they are attached?

How can I create a layer on my xref so it doesn't affect othere sheets referencing my drawing without having to open a couple of hundred draiwngs. I know I can create my layer, freeze it, save my drawing, open all sheets referencing my xref and save them. Better yet, is there a setting I can use that makes my new layer pop up frozen on for all sheets while I work on my xref, on a newly created layer?

When you XREF a drawing from another file that file is brought in along with all of its layers. Personally I do not need these layers for my access is there anyway I can combine all these to eliminate the large quantity of layers in my file? Say by layer merging. And if I do will this affect the ability of the file to revise itself?
Explanation: What I am doing is taking a bunch of engineering drawings, XREF them into my file, then creating seperate viewports for each drawing referenced in. But the key is I need these files to adjust automatically when the engineers make changes (This is done through the XREF command from what I gathered from one of my previous posts).

I have an drawing that is loaded with attributed blocks. Nothing but text. When I XREF this into another drawing, none of the text shows. Layers are on, nothing is set to invisible.
I think this drawing is from an older version of AutoCAD, would that be the problem?

so in one drawing, the annotative scales of the objects are listed as 1" = 30' etc, and in the drawing i have them xref'ed into are 1:30. the only way i can get the annotative txt to show up is to make them non-annotative.
im assuming it has to do with the difference of 1:30 and 1" = 30'.

xref fade control not working? In model space I have xref'd a dwg (probably 2010 format) and it positions correct and displays in the normal default faded mode. No matter where I have the slider in display options, the xref fade does not change. Even changing the system variable through the command line is ineffective.
I'm running AutoCAD 2013 with Service Pack 1.1. installed.

I work with bridges and get xrefs from our road designers containing hundreds of layers. I'd like to point at an object in these xrefs and get the layer name. Is there a simple way to do this? The way the LAYFRZ-command works, freezing a single layer, I figure ACAD should be able to just return the layer name instead. Does this functionality exist?

As I recall, in previous versions of AutoCAD, when I am in the Layer Properties Manager and I click on an xref under the Xref heading, the only layers shown were the ones in that xref, not all.
That is what is happening now. I cannot seem to find any setting under the settings for the Layer Properties Manager that would change this.
