AutoCAD 2013 :: Cut Sections From Inventor Model
Oct 30, 2013
I am trying to cut sections from an inventor model in AutoCAD. On numerous occasions I am running into an issue where the section cuts are not shown correctly. I have figured out how to correct this issue when cutting sections in inventor, but the issue is accruing in AutoCAD as well. I have attached an image showing an example of what I am talking about, you can clearly see that there are bolts and plates that should be displayed in the section cut which is shown above.

Details and sections signs in model/viewport modes,
In steel structure drawings, it is very common to have cross sections at particular locations as well as having details at specific joint.
I’m wondering if there is a way to have automation for
Having a sign (circular or rectangular) on the original drawing to show what each viewport represents on the model space (attached). This feature is already available (for example) in the ArcGIS software, i.e, each viewports is indicated by a sign on the original map to show where we are in that viewport
Having a cross section sign that represents at which location the cross section is taken (attached)
I’m not talking here about 3D model. All what I want is to show what each viewport represent on the mother drawing and also to show where the cross section is taken.
Attached screenshots
Software: AutoCAD 2014, AutoCAD C3D, AutoCAD M3D, Revit
Windows 7 (Ultimate 64 bits),
Firefox 20.0,
Kaspersky 2013.

I would like to create sections from my 3D model that would directly associate the layers cut from the model. In other words, I would like the line work in the section to be on the same layer as entities in model.

Im using AutoCAD 2007.
I have done a land survey showing a top of bank - and the bottom of bank, which ive then contoured by using Carlson Survey (AutoCAD engined).
Im trying to draw cross sections through my model that would obviously show the level of the surface.
The bank lines and contour lines are polylines.

In attempting to use either 'export face as' or 'export sketch as' from a solid model in Inventor 2013 the resultant DXF file ALWAYS consists of PolyLines. This prevents other "downstream" software from properly importing the file as a DXF. Thus far the ONLY work-around I have found is to open the DXF in AutoCAD, Explode the polylines, and then re-save as a DXF from AutoCAD.

Tried to do something that all other 3D softwares seem to have no problem with, even inventor at least when we were using the old versions.
Editting sketch - close sketch. No model update.
This is an existing 3D model created with inv2011. inv2013 does not like much of what we created in the old releases of inv.
Sketch gives me 1 dimension. Part and drawing give the old dimension value.
This is yet another major sign of unstable software. Over 24 software issues discovered from changing inv2011 to inv2013.

I'm using Autodesk Inventor Pro 2013.
I have a middle complexity model, with several decals (,jpg, Using Mask), projected to different parts. When I start Studio, and start rendering, Inventor hangs. The render window opens, but it freezes on Translating and soon both of the windows are not answering. I've checked th CPU. Inventor uses around 1G of ram, during regular use. When I start rendering, slowly it goes up around 5,5G, and eventually the Windows freezes. Rendering the same model without a decal works fine.
I've installed all the Windows updates, and the Inv2013 1.1 Service Pack. Nothing worked.

how to create cross sections without cutting up the model similar to applications like Autodesk Inventor? Maybe inserting a poly plane into the object and tell Maya to only render stuff in the normal direction of the plane if that is even possible?

Acad 2013 on a capable Windows 7 machine.
I would like to cut a section through an extrusion. Attached find a section view of my extrusion cut at 90%%d. My deal is I want to be able to specify the angle. It could be anything, and it could be a compound miter (using in saw-speak, because my drawings go to saw operators), that is, angles in two directions. But, let's keep it simple - how to cut a section parallel with the Y axis in the attached drawing?
Right now I am warping something in due to the complexity of the profile. But for accuracy sake it is obvious why I'd like something better. I'd like my operators to have confidence in what they see.
I could do this easily in Inventor. Or even oin Civil 3D, working around it (using Autodesk-speak). But, I have neither. Is this a UCS thing? I trained myself to never touch the UCS long ago, because I am a surveyor by trade, and surveyors pull coordinates from AutoCAD (or one of its children) to stake points on the ground with, and a surveyor ends up working at McD's if she/he goes outside with coords pulled from a made-up UCS. So I don't know the first thing about manipulating the UCS, despite daily use of the products since release 12.
I looked at Sections in the 3D modeling workspace palettes, but nothing really jumped out at me for being able to rotate or cut sections where I want them to be. They all seem to snap to existing planes of the extruded solid. Big deal - I can do that intuitively just by looking at the part.

I am trying to work on a previous file in my office, and when it opens on mycomputer, it does not display as it should.
In general, the purpose of the project is to reinstate the side slopes of a road abutting a river. Cut & fill sections have been generated on 20m station increments along the road corridor/surfaces in order to calulate cut and fill as well as to reference the design to flood levels.
When I open the file, all of these sections (and there are alot) have relocated themselves to various locations in model space, none of which are aligned with the viewports that are being used for printing.
Could it be software and/or hardware incompatibility with the computer they were originally created on? (I believe it was created with C3D 2010, or C3D 2011 - I am currently running 2012)

My problem today is that I made a Model of a Part of a ship using surfaces rather than solids because the engineer thought it would be easier to bring into ANSYS program for analysis but he is now having a problem with it and I am looking into converting my current model to solid. I can do it but the method I thought of using is quite long winded and we are working to a tight deadline.
1.open up the surface part
2.use "Offset/Thicken"
3.any clashes between parts make a sketch and cut away.
the problem is the amount of plates I have and the time it takes to sort them out.

We're using Inventor to model complex bridge structures. We take sections, plans, elevations etc. from the model to AutoCAD.dwg format. We then open the .dwg and insert the view blocks in model space, these files are then used as xrefs in AutoCAD, long winded but a supply chain requirement.
The models and xrefs are all saved on our network, no vault used, no windows syncing.
To create the sections we have a separate part file that contains sketches where we want the sections taken, this is placed in our assembly. The sketches are all straight lines (no cranks) and included in the .dwg and selected to create the sections.
We're experiencing a significant number of files that when we open to update the model views we randomly get an error "valid section line not found" and several of the sections disappear. The section lines part file is fine, the section lines are all still there and unchanged.

This is happening on both 2012 and 2014, the workflow was what I followed offline to try and replicate an issue on a live project: Start a new partDraw a rectangle 10m x 10m fully constrainedExtrude by 10mSaveStart a new .dwg format drawing (though same results if using out of the box .idw)Place a top base view of the partSection the part anyway or direction in such a way not to infer any constraintsSection properties set to include slice and slice the whole partPlace the sectionEdit the sketch of the section lineApply a "fix" constraint to the line itselfFinish the sketch I then get an error saying the sketch does not contain a valid section line and the section disappears
he section line sketchRemove the fix constraint from the lineFinish sketch My section then reappears
Edit the section line sketchUse a "fix" constraint on each end of the lineFinish the sketch
My section remains. We're experiencing a lot of problems of section lines and therefore sections disappearing even though we're not directly applying fix constraints, I was wandering if Inventor applies a fix constraint should geometry that a section line is constrained to disappears.

Is there a way to use the Split Solid tool to partially split a circle and have multiple solids after.
Ex) I would like to cut the tank at the 180 and 270 deg marks. Using the split tool still cuts through 0 and 90. I tried drawing a line from a top view that started from center going through 180, but it still goes through 0 as well.
I've attached an example shell of where I would like to have 6 solids after.

I am working on creating a male mold for a canoe. I first designed the cross sections for the canoe and then began converting them to the mold cross sections. When I try to loft the cross sections I have converted so far, they all loft as I intended until I get to the rear of the canoe (sketch 8). The issue typically arises in gunwale section (the part that appears to be a notch in the sides). Everytime I loft, one of the gunwales splits/twists in an undesired fashion (in the image below the right gunwale is incorrectly twisted).
I do not understand why this is happening for a few reason:
1. The canoe cross sections lofted as planned, and I only added simple boxy shapes to those cross sections.
2. Each cross section is symmetrical (or at least from what I can tell they are).
3. The cross sections that are lofting improperly all have the same number of segments and are in very similar shapes.
I have attached the file of the cross sections and another file of an improper loft.

I have a really long parts list and would like to know if there is there a way to split the parts list into two distinct shorter lists.
This is how it is done in Solidworks. Just wondering if splitting BOM's is possible in Inventor.

A thing I bump in to everytime is that Content Center parts do not standard section in Assemblies and Drawings.
In the Drawings I can menage this by selecting the parts in browser or drawing views and get them sectioned or not.
In Assemblies there is the option to select "Participate in Assembly and Drawing sections" in the Document Settings.
Unfortunately this doesn't work on Content Center parts. Why not?
After searching the site, I noticed the "solution" to check the "Section All Parts" option in the Application options.
This solution is a work around. It only solves the issue when you want to section all parts.
But what if I want to section a few parts and not all?
For example, I do want to section my beams, pipes, tubes etc., but do not want to section my bolts, nuts, washers etc.
I thought that was wat the "Participate in Assembly and Drawing sections" option was for.
Currently working with Inventor 2012

We received a surface model from a vendor that I have patched up as best I can, it still has one hole that I can find that I haven't been able to fill. Ideally we would like to have a solid model, but I'm running out of time to get this done and the surface model we have would be good enough for our purposes IF I can get the yellow surface tangent lines to turn off or change their color to black.
I've attached a jpg of the surface model with the yellow lines and uploaded the model here: [URL].....

I have an AutoCAD drawing (I did not create it) of a proposed trail in my city, and I've been tasked with making some kind of model or render of a section of it. I'm at a loss for how to even start, unfortunately. In the end I would like to have an accurate 3D model of a boardwalk section of the trail with surrounding terrain. I have Sketchup, Google Earth, and Revit at my disposal.
My first problem is topography. When I import the CAD drawing to Revit it seems there is some topographical data, which will be needed to realistically build the boardwalk on top of. I was able to get the terrain of the area into Sketchup from Google Earth, but then I don't know exactly where to build the model.
I've attached an image of a floor I created in the outline of the boardwalk. The area in question begins at the two handicap parking stalls (represented as the two blue towers for some hilarious reason) and ends at the second square (a viewing platform). My preferred method would be get an accurate topograhic site in Revit, build the boardwalk, and then place surrounding vegetation so I can get some renders.
EDIT: I've attached "Screenshot 2" which shows I found I was able to create terrain in Revit by selecting a layer of the CAD file. However that layer is suspended above, and my placeholder floor is underneath. Now I just need to get the floor (representing the boardwalk) to go along the terrain.

I have created a 3D model of a helical gear. The process followed was to use the profile of one tooth, which by the way is a true involute shape, then displace that profile and rotate it the amount needed to equal the face width of the gear and to match the helix angle. There is also a profile located at the midpoint of the gear. The profiles are all closed polylines.
I then used the LOFT command to create a solid tooth. It looks exactly like it should. I tried to use the SWEEP command but that rotates the profile 90 deg. from the path. Extrude won't work because the path is a 3D line in space.
I then invoked the POLAR array and put 28 teeth around the center of the gear. That too looks exactly as I would expect it to.
BUT - when I try to UNION the 28 teeth into one solid, AuotoCAD 2013 stops working. And that occurs the moment the cursor touchs any part of any individual tooth. If I try to UNION the array by dragging a window over it, it stops when the window gets about halfway over the model.
The computer is a Lenovo S-30 workstation with 8 Gig of ram, an nVidia 2000 with 1Gbyte of video memory and dual 1Tbyte hard drives.
