AutoCAD 2013 :: Converting Microstation Linetypes
Jun 17, 2013
I am working on my company template. We are trying to keep it as close to INDOT standards as we can. Indot uses microstation and provides many files for microstation users. I converted one of the files to a .DWG and impoted all the linetypes to my template. This had a lot of bad side effects.
How to extract the actual code for the Linetypes, so that i can simply re-write a code as autocad wants it and then import?

We are a water utility and have thousands of detail drawings of service taps and hydrant connections (maybe 11,000 total). These are in the old Microstation J format. Each drawing is divided into a top half and bottom half. The bottom half of the drawing is the actual drawing portion.
The top half of the drawing is text that comes out of an Old Oracle database, into Microsoft Word 2000 through mail merge then is copied and pasted into the top portion of the card. Newer drawings done like this and opened in AutoCAD have the top portion identified as an OLE object (embedded object), while the older drawings just look like a drawing in the top.
I'm looking to update the system to ArcGIS and AutoCAD. The data will be moved to a Microsoft Access database (probably later SQL Server), and I want to convert all the old Microstation drawings into an AutoCAD format. ArcGIS will provide the basemap and be linked to the database, with clickable hyperlinks to open the AutoCAD drawings. I would like to be able to keep the bottom drawing half while changing the top half of each drawing to reflect updated data in the database. If this can be automatically updated, that would be awesome.
One is the best program to automatically bulk convert the drawings from Microstation J to AutoCAD (I have 2011). Also, I'm looking for a method to display the text from the database in the top portion of the card using either mail merge with AutoCAD or some automatic method of pulling the info out of the database. Can I just copy-paste this info into AutoCAD as we did with Microstation or is there a better way?

So we have now been told by the state that all of our right of way maps must be done (finished) in microstation. We have solely been autocad users for the last 15 years. We purchase microstation, and I immediately hate it! So, the owner wants to know if we can convert back and forth. I did some quick converting but seems the textstyles are the major problems.

I attached DGN file in dwg, the same way of attaching any exrefrence. I would like to make changing the this attached file. It does not respond as block or xref.
How can I edit this DGN in the AutoCAD?

I am having trouble when I import XRef’s and the scaling of lines. When the drawings are importing the hidden lines do not show up as hidden lines. I know this might be a scaling issue but I do not know how to correct this. The XRef drawing is drawn at a scale of 1-1/2”=1’-0” and set to print on a letter size paper but the drawing which it is imported to is set to be printed on a 11x17 but the viewport is still at the 1-1/2” scale and the lines are shown as continuous.

I must be missing something on how Linetypes Work. I created a folder where I store all my shape files for linetypes, and added it as both a support file search path and a working support file search path. I tried to provide as much information as I could with the images below. When I try to bring in a linetype I constantly get a bad definition error. proper way to store and implement Linotype standards.

I incorporated an architects drawing into mine, and brought in hundreds of linetypes and text styles. Whenever I cut and paste from that drawing, the linetypes come too. If I cut and paste within the drawing, I think the linetypes multiply. It's made the drawings almost unworkable.
I can xref the file into a new drawing, and edit the x ref to make it part of the drawing, which gets rid of the linetypes, but adds a prefix to every layer, block, text style etc.

I'm having a small problem with linetypes that are not being used nor will they purge from a drawing. I believe that all started with the binding of an xref but now the xref has been removed along with just about everything else other than simple geometry and some text. The linetypes will not purge. For instance, if I take a standard "new" dwt file that has no problems and copy anything from an "infected" drawing to the dwt, the infectious linetypes will now appear in the dwt. And when I say anything, I mean anything. i can draw a new circle/line/point on the "0" layer and copy that new item into the clean dwt and it will take along with it the unwanted linetypes.
I have seen a similar post about linetypes not purging. And have tried the wblock solution with now luck. I have tried recover along with anything else that I could think of. Again the drawing doesn't have any xrefs and even newly drawn items, when copied, will become infected by the unwanted line types.
Also, the linetypes that are being left behind do have the "$0$" within the name. But also to mention the only ones being left behind are "powerline" and "phantom",

Using project navigator my drawings get xrefed from the constructs, through the views, and finally to the sheets tab.
I recently realized that I needed to fix / change my linetypes on 5 different drawings starting at the construct. When I had finally finished fixing the layer linetype / line LTscale / drawing LTscale to get it to look exactly the way that I wanted, I had to go through my views drawings, and the sheets drawings, detach the xrefs, re-attach them, and then modify the layers to the colours that I wanted.
Some people had the same problem about 10 years ago in this thread, and the poster at the bottom sums it all up nicely. This is not a VISRETAIN issue. I just want changes to my linetype changes to flow through all xrefs, just as if I had moved a line.
[URL]
I would like to see a setting added to CAD that would allow linetype changes to flow through, and a colour setting that would allow colour changes to flow through. Maybe VISRETAIN is too broad of a command, and needs to be broken down into linetypes, colours, LTScales. etc etc etc.

I am trying to understand how Linetype scale works, and have been researching on LTSCALE, MSLTSCLAE and PSLTSCLAE. I believe I have a fair understanding of each of these settings. Still, I can't figure out how the scaling works while I was trying to create custom line type. To illustrate, I created a new linetype called XCENTER, which is exactly the same line type as CENTER except its name, in a new LIN file.
*XCENTER,XCenter ____ _ ____ _ ____ _ ____ _ ____ _ ____
A,1.25,-.25,.25,-.25
After loading the new linetype into my drawing, I was surprised to see that CENTER and XCenter show up in different scales in the same drawing (see png).
My work file is WORK.DWG, I have purged everything except the two polylines, one with the line type of CENTER, the other xCENTER. Not that my global scale is 1:100, LTSCLAE=, MSLTSCALE=1, the object scales are both set to 1.0.
I copied the two lines to clipboard and pasted on a brand new drawing TEST.DWG, and the two lines show up in the same scale.
What in my original drawing WORK.DWG is causing this problem?

im not too hip with shapefiles/linetypes. but here is my current situation. everything was working fine for the past 2 weeks since our civil2013 install. yesterday i started a new drawing with our template, and now our linetypes are just dashed lines. its not loading the x's for fences, or any of our other custom shapes. i opened an old drawing which was working fine, and it now has the same issue.
the support file path is pointed to a local folder which contains a customised .shx file made by a previous employee here.

Is there a way to get linetypes with text to read with the viewports?
*P-GAS,Gas Line ----GAS----GAS----GAS----GAS----GAS----GAS--
A,.5,-.2,["GAS",STANDARD,S=.1,U=0.0,X=-0.1,Y=-.05],-.25
It reads great in Model tab, but in paperspace tab, my viewport is rotated versus the Model tab

Why is it, when I restore a layer state to a blank drawing, it cannot load the linetypes saved to those layers? I get an error that says Linetypes not loaded and then wind up with a full set of layers all with CONTINUOUS linetype.
If I bring in a block from a toolpalette that has a new linetype and layer, it will create them for me just by inserting the block. Am I missing something??

I can't remember the option how to change the display of linetypes to show as solid instead of as two lines. I think this may be something to do with the 'solidfill' option.

I've been trying to convert 3D dwg models to 3D dgn models without success, using AutoCAD 2012.
The DGN either displays the solid, which isn't visible in a Microstation extraction or it just exports the centrelines/linework and not the solids.
Is this possible in newer version ? i.e. 2013/2014.
I've tried the export to ACIS .sat file and that works fine, but it moves everything to the same lavel/layer which defeats to object of seperatng the items in the first place.

I am a landscape architect, and have used autocad for the past three years, and I am also familiar with microstation, which I used at a previous job. My question is primarily for the users that are familiar with both products.
Unlike much of the drafting I have done in architecture (which is often straight lines and 90 angles), landscape architecture and land planning often requires long sweeping curves that lead into tangent arcs, and or lines. Microstation has a brilliant arc tool that allows one to create beautiful curves that are always tangent. The arc tool also allows placement of the next curve anywhere, as opposed to snapping to an end point. Is there a way to do the described actions in Autocad?

Is there a way to convert a .dgn to a .dwg without microstation?
-I have read that you can xref a dgn in a dwg but this did not work. civil3D simply does not recognize the dgn extension in any way shape or form ....that i have found.
THE LONG VERSION AS TO WHY:
I have both a dgn and a dwg of the same thing, only difference being the dgn has colored layer linework and lineweights etc. for entites on the same layer. The .dwg is just thousands of white lines on various layers.
to make it easier id like ot be able to have the colors to at least quick select stuff to move to their own layers seperately. rather then have multiple entites on the same layer that are in no way related to each other.

I just finished a project without using any coordinate system (it shows none), and now i need it to be in ll84 coordinate system. Is there a way to convert it? When i try to do it, the streets go to a random location (in a random longitude and latitude), and even if i move it to the right place it doesnt work, because the scale of the drawing doesnt seem to be right, and i cant manage to fix it.

I have a client that required us to give them a surface that they could load into microstation. I have version c3d2010. I gave them a land xml file. When they uploaded it into their program, which I believe is inroads they said the contours it generation for the surface looks great in the middle, but the edges it seems to have dropped the elevations to zero.
I did make a boundary to go around the surface to clean up any errant triangulation lines. The polyline I used is at elevation zero. I don't know if this is causing that? The client thinks the inroads is forcing the edges to be elev zero. She has limited knowledge of land xml files and has never used them till now.
Something to change on her end or is it my polyline causing this?

Creating a CTB file to mimic a Microstation pen table? I have a client supplied *.tbl (an intergraph pen table file I believe) and how to generate a CTB that will behave similarly (ie. plot nearly the same)..
I can open the *.tbl file in a text editor and it just looks like a bunch of "if, then" statements related to line weights and pattern files....
I have already created a template with the same layers/levels, colors, linewights, etc... (and can convert everything to dgns), but now I need to figure out how to get similar plotted results from both sets of drawings (the dwg and the dgn..)

I am not a CAduser, but someone who is managing a CAD project whereby we need to covert the files to Microstation. My AutoCAD person has limited experiece doing this so I thought I would turn to you for your expertise.
I've read that you can convert AutoCAD files to .dxf and import into Microstation but will that keep the integrity of the file? As you cannot covert directly from one to the other because fonts, line weights, etc. don't translate well.

I have a query as to how I could automate the replacing of selected individual lines with predetermined sized rectangular blocks centered on the line at the angle and on the “0” layer . See attached file:
The rectangle need not necessarily be a polyline, 4 single lines would be sufficient. And whether the original line is or is not replaced is unimportant either.

is there a simple way of converting a drawing from a complex draiwng including blocks/dynamic blocks so that it becomes effectively a dumb drawing of lines arcs and text.
the only solution i have is to convert the drawing to a pdf then convert it back to a dwg using a pdf to dwg converter.
the reason being i dont want my client to work out how i construct my drawings.

I installed a brand new install of 2013 Product Design Suite Premium on a new machine. When I go to run Inventor everything seems to work fine. I make a drawing of a part and export to DWG. That's a requirement here. When I go to open the file in AutoCAD, the hatch pattern doesn't show and it looks like the boundaries for the hatch move to 0,0,0. Very stange and I haven't been able to figure this out. I installed Premium on another machine and performed the same export. Works fine on the other machine. The other machine however, has 2012 installed as well. Could this simply be a bad install?
