After Effects :: Possible Performance Killing Option Enabled?
Dec 29, 2013
A week ago AE was running fine, but in the last few days, I must have enabled or did something to chop its performance by 75%.
Also, while rendering, my ENTIRE computer is super laggy, just typing this text right now, for example, is laggy. I used to ALWAYS hit render, and then browse the web, watch videos, etc... but now it's unbearable. Also, it isn't just when i do a final render. It also occurs when I skip to a single frame in the comp and it tries to render it(goes really slow)
I was editing a video an while playing with the scale I went to RAM preview and it wouldn't work so I closed it down and reopened it as this problem has happened a few times and this has been the fix. I then went to RAM preview from the beggining and my computer crashed, no bluescreen the monitors just went blank and the BIOS popped up. I then reopened my project and RAM previewed from the beggining and it didn't start it just said requesting frame 2 of ... I then played with a few of the prefrences eg. clearing the cache and purging memory and It still didn't work. I then disabled multiprocessing and RAM previewing worked again though I would like multiprocessing to work as It is alot faster. I then tried restarting my computer and reinstalling AE but still no luck. Also rendering does not work either with multiprocessing enabled.

Why is the scrolling on the timeline so slow when Cache indicators are enabled? It's very useful to have cache indicators on but when they are enabled the scrolling (up-down/left-right) on the timeline becomes significantly slow and unresponsive enough to make it unusable. It's more noticeable the more layers are present in each composition. It's very frustrating and it is something that started happening from 5.5 onwards.
I am now on After Effect 12.2 with a Macbook Retina 2.6Ghz i7 and 16gb of ram. The problem was also present on my previous laptop.
I am buying a laptop for AE for mobile reasons.does the fast preview(so the instant result after changing an effect value you get in the preview window) depend on gpu or cpu, or both depending on what effects are used? I am looking at a 670mx for cuda, but 7970m for dominant opengl scores.
Will these 2 gpu's give me different performances regarding fast preview,or is looking into different gpu's not a worthy question yet due to After effects mostly being a cpu heavy program? Now i know all that ray tracing acceleration and how nvidia cards are necessary for that, but this is regarding fast preview only.
The performance was fast without OpenGL(Fast Previews > Off), with my old graphic card, GeForce GTS250. After I upgrade the graphic card to Quadro 5000, it's really slow with exactly the same settings.
that is having really slow performance using AE CS6 or AECC and possibly AE CS5.5 I think i might of found out what the problem is.My System specs are below:
- Really slow performance when scrubbing along the timeline.
- Adaptive Resoltion wasn't working at all super slow previewing
- Multiprocessor rendering not working, or taking forever to start up, and sometimes it would work but still not the way it should it was hit or miss
- Disk Caching not working
- many others that I can't think of at the moment
SOLUTION for slow scrubbing of the timeline for Quad, Six and Eight core systems
Here is what I figured out after hours and hours of testing and configuring. I even went back to AE CS5.5 to see if all these problems existed in that version. Although some did but not all
From what I can tell it looks like certain plugins are not compatible to Quad, Six and Eight Core machines. The main plugin that has the problem is Keylight 1.2 that comes bundled now with CS6 and CC.
If you turn off the plugin on your layers scrubbing the timeline speeds up and works like it should. If you want to use keylight then do the following:
- under screenmatte, set the screen softness to 0
- shrink and grow to 0.
If you use any number other than these settings it causes scrubbing and rendering of the timeline to go extremely slow.
SOLUTION for all the issues above for Quad, Six and Eight core systems
After hours and hours of testing I have come to the conclusion that AE CS6 and CC don't work well with Quad, six and eight core systems in general and especially with the keylight plugin.
FIX: Go into your Bios of your computer and set your multiple core to either 1, 2 cores, theis will give you 2 thread or 4 threads. This will fix all the issues as stated below. I haven't tested 4 cores yet but soon will. But I know that 6 and 8 cores definitely does not work it causes all the major issues above.
After setting my system to 1 or 2 cores, Ae is extremelly fast and responsive. Timeline scrubbing is super fast now even with keylight 1.2 and all it's settings. Adaptive resolution now works, Multiprocessing starts up immediately and disk caching is working.
Conclusion
I am not able to set my system to use 8 or all cores in my bios, This causes so many performance issues in AE CS6 and CC and some in even CS 5.5. I need to use either 1 or 2 cores. As you might no this really sucks when I am limiting myself to only 4 threads when I could be using 32 threads. Pleas Adobe look into this issues with these systems that have 4, 6 or 8 core systems. This could possibley just be for Dual core systems too since that is what I have here.
When I'm using the polygonal lasso tool to cut something out it tends to suddenly hook up back to the beginning point without me telling it to do so and therefore ruining the remainder of the job.
I noticed that it only does this when I'm moving back on myself (for example going round the edge of something curved etc)
This had been bugging me for ages and I can't believe the photoshop people would have let something this annoying slip through the cracks.
Is there a fix for this or something obvious I am missing?
I just installed this program and for some reason i do not have the 3d tab for 3d effects. i have a Nvidia 650 so it is good enough to run it, i just don't know why it wont. i have installed the latest driver for my card .
I don't now if this is the right forum, because Trapcode Particular is from Red Giant and not for Adobe, but.. I'm using After Effects CS6 and I installed Trapcode Particular. When I select layer emitter, I can't choose a layer. Under layer is no option to select layer.
I am using After effects cs6 and when i try to choose a format there is no option to save as an image sequence. This goes for any clip I try to render. The picture below is where I am having the problem, under the format tab. There are only about 10 options under the tab and image sequence is not one of them.
I am not getting an option of exporting in mpeg 4 format? Infact when I am rendering in AVI file the size of the file is extremely huge. Need reducing the file size & exporting in MPEG4 format.
The Lighting effects in CS6 are really nice but im having some difficulty with scaling the lights.
When you mouse over the handles on the lighting area, a small tool tip appears to say "scale width, scale length, rotate, move" The thing is I am having a nightmare to get "scale width, scale length" to show up.
I have to mouse over, twiddle about, wait, move the mouse away, shake it etc before finally it decides to show "scale length" It seems like the 'hot zone' for move & rotate is large but scale is just one invisible pixel you have to search around for.
I have accidentally deleted a frame option from graphics selections. I thought I was only removing it from the photo I was working with. No warning came up when I did this. I tried resetting the panel, but that did not work. I also could not find it in recent edits. Is there any way it can be retrieved and restored to the panel? It is one of a very few I might want to use in the future.
Currently you have to check a box, and then build a module for H.264 export.
We all get it that you want people to use Media Encoder. But I never use it. It forces me to render a separate file, then re-render that file. I don't need the extra lossless files floating around my machine, and H.264 mp4's looks great coming straight out of after effects.
Since upgrading I've had set up 4 people output workflow. They all went back to making huge MOV files.
There's a very long list that I have to sift through everytime I use the Text tool. I have deactivated a ton of fonts in font book. Is there somewhere else to delete or turn off fonts? I don't want to delete fonts the system needs, but I don't want them showing up in the list, either.
I have an i7 3770k, TWO AMD HD 7970s, 16 GB of 1866mhz ram and I'm on Windows 7 64 bit.
Why does Photoshop run (much) worse when I enable GPU acceleration? Do they do this on purpose so they can sell their "professional" graphics cards where the only difference is the driver is more "optimized" for programs like CAD and Phoshop?
I have having a weird problem with Photoshop CS4. First of all, let me give off the specs.
OS: Windows 7 64 bit Graphics Card: AMD Radeon HD 7570 (Driver Version 8.960.11.1000, with latest Catalyst Control Center)
I use Photoshop CS4 for freelance work, and one of the tools I like to use is the Rotate tool. When I first got my desktop and installed Photoshop, everything worked fine. However, recently I was forced to perform and factory restore on my desktop due to a virus.
Today I started working on something and when I tried using the Rotate tool, it was not working (I go that error window saying it wasn't enabled). I checked the OpenGL settings to see it was enabled. Confused, I restarted Photoshop and tried again with no luck.
This turned into a search around the internet to see just what is going on, but the only thing I could find was suggesting updating drivers for my graphics card and Adobe, which I have tried with no success. I have found out that some people were having the same trouble as me, but what makes my case odd is that it was working fine before the factory restore.
I have been trying to burn a Blu Ray project. It is a 108 minute compilation of HD material that I assembled over the last year and am scheduled to show it Christmas Eve for my family. The project burns fine to a Blu Ray disk and plays back fine however for some reason, it will only burn in stereo and not Dolby 5.1. I have 5.1 sound enabled in the settings and when I burn the disk it is also the audio format I have chosen. I have burned two disks with the same results. I burned a test Blu Ray of this project back in November and it was encoded correctly in 5.1.
I have some how enabled the grid function (control h) on EVERY image I open. I have to disbale the grid manually for each photo by pressing control H. It is listed under "extras" as well. Please help me disable this permanentely so I don't have to do it every time.
When plotting to an Oce device with enabled accounting: the accounting dialog window pops up for each sheet of the print job when several sheets are chosen.
I'm tying to see if the 3D features in Photoshop Creative Cloud do what I want to do but they are not enabled. Below is my computer specs. It has 2GB on the GPU so it should work.
Adobe Photoshop Version: 14.0 (14.0 20130423.r.221 2013/04/23:23:00:00) x64 Operating System: Mac OS 10.8.4 System architecture: Intel CPU Family:6, Model:58, Stepping:9 with MMX, SSE Integer, SSE FP, SSE2, SSE3, SSE4.1, SSE4.2, HyperThreading Physical processor count: 4 Logical processor count: 8 Processor speed: 3400 MHz
I purchased a logo and business card design from a designer but one of the colors is the wrong shade of blue. Is there a way to change the one color throughout the file if the file doesn't have layers enabled? I'm a novice PS user but am unable to get in touch with designer to get revised files so was hoping there is a way I can do this myself.
I have a creative cloud subscription and have photoshop installed but for some reason, my 3d features aren't enabled. Is this something to do with my creative cloud account is the student based one?
I have Photoshop CS5 Extended (x64), and I have enabled OpenGL in the preferences, AND I've checked that my Graphics card is supported, AND I've updated my drivers....
I can't, for the life of me, get Repousse to work!!I'm trying to extrude a logo I've created.... BUT I've also tried to repousse a text layer and a Shape layer, just to test it... and NOTHING.
I've been using Autocad 2014 for several months now, and I've noticed that every couple days or so it turns off my autosave. I can check the box to enable it, and set it to 10 minutes, and a couple days later it will be unchecked and say 0 minutes in the box. I don't know how often it happens, I know it takes more than one day, but it's really annoying and one of those things I usually only find AFTER I have a drawing crash on me.
