I've noticed new issue with iRay: When glosiness of refractions is lower than 1 the SHADOW isn't correct - looks like casted by non-transparent object.
I'm sure it's not caused by "non shaped" light source, I've tried with daylight system and with Photometic shape-visible light.
I've attached ZIPped file to illustrate that problem, and a test renderings I've made.

When working with a 3D layer, I cannot use any textures besides the diffuse texture at the same time as using the render setting "Ray Traced". For example, everything works great when the render setting is set to "Solid": I can use a high quality glossiness texture and even a bump map. But as soon as I juice up the render settings to Ray Traced, Photoshop freezes up, and I have to force quit it through the task manager. The texture being used is high rez, as in 8192 by 4096, but the same freeze up occurs on a smaller texture of 2000 by 4000. I have a question about 3D rendering in Autocad 2012. The image attached to this post has three objects with different presets using mental ray. From right to left the reflection varies from perfect mirror reflection to a diffuse reflective surface.
I've been struggling with Autocad to render diffuse reflective surface but every time i use reflective and gloss in a non metallic material the result is always mirrored. When objects are illuminated with a white point light the white color should cast and reflect in the materials in a diffusive way, unless the material has a glossy finish.
Can i get diffusive reflections in objects such as the example in the middle or the one in the right of the picture of this post or do i have o use other program for final photorealistic render?

recently i got a new workstation at work, and i am puzzled with one problem. I made a clean installation of Max, ran it, and started to work, but for some reason, my material thumbnail shows refraction of A&D material as thin walled even when it is set to solid.
I tried to uninstall max, wipe max directory and user folders in Appdata/Local/Autodesk, reinstall everything again
Happens both in slate and compact ME.
Core i7 870 @3,2Ghz
16GB RAM
GeForce GTX460
3ds Max 2012 SP2

I'm getting a totally black rendering using iray on an existing file that was created using mental ray. I've tried changing the exposure. Can I use iray with an existing file with arch and design mats?

I have a 580GTX and I think that's a pretty powerful card. With Quadcore 3.6ghz... And iray will never ever stop rendering when set to unlimited? I thought that eventually, somehow it should stop when it calculates everything possible? But there is no progress bar. Despite leaving even a simple scene running for hours upon hours it still has some fuzzy grainy specs in certain parts of image though.

I've started playing with iray just to see how things should actually look so that I can compare it with MR renderings. The main error here is the dark shadows... Why they're so dark? Also interesting how mr has completely washed out the soffit of the walkway and notice how iray brings out the metallic qualities in the copper fascia.
Photographic exposure's used with a daylight system and MR image uses default GI and Draft FG.

So I finally made my own alpha map to simple shapes look like strands of hair. Only problem is when I use Iray and I learn that it won't render the alpha and I'm left with a render of the original shapes. Is there anyway to work around this?
I want to keep Iray, I can't give up that rendering power.But on the other hand I want to use hair without having to use anything that will eat at my computer's performance (so no hair and fur modifier or anything particle system unless it can be utilized easier)

having trouble with rendering with iray on 3ds max 2013. All goes well for the first 2 hours or so and then the drivers crash with error code 4101 ( Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered.) This then kills the render. ive tried updating my mobo bios asus p9x79 to latest verion from 2104 to 3305. this had no effect. im using a gtx 670 ftw 4gb with 3104.07 drivers and 80.04.4b.00.70 firmware is installed. 3ds max is updated to update 6 This is on a clean install of windows drivers and apps. this is killing me ive got stuff that needs to get done and i just cant do it at the moment.

"Why iray in 3ds max 2012 doesn't show imported bitmap textures in renders?" It's quite baffling as to why, but even when i change back to my regular Driver Direct3D 9.0- ATI Radeon HD 4600 series it refuses to show rendered textures other than ones that are made in max 2012.
I've uploaded a picture to show what happened.

I'm trying to find out if the new iray 2 Layered Material Model is in 3ds Max 2012 Service Pack 2..The Nvidia 2011 Siggraph demo has iray 2 supporting this material, for SSS and carpaint type shaders.
The 3ds Max Service Pack 2 has iray 2 but in the Release Notes for Service Pack 2 I can't see this new shader.Is this something that's in Max SP2 but not supported yet?

I have a NVidea Quadro FX 1800 card. The NVidea Control Panel information shows 64 CUDA cores(screen grab attached). Yet the iRay message window shows 0 CUDA cores (screen grab attached).
how I can get the iRay Renderer to use the CUDA cores on my machine?

Any good workaround for Visible to camera option not working with iray? I need to hide one object from my render but still keep its effect on lighting. Even only just making the object not visible in the alpha channel would be enough (if the workaround doesnt mean rendering the image 2 times).

When iray rendering crashes, it briefly displays an error message, then goes to the Autodesk error report, closing down 3dsmax. The error message on my machine is displayed in red on grey for a fraction of a second, and appears to give information as to cause of crash, but is too quick to read. Any way to persuade it to stay on screen long enough to read?

Got my max design 2012 but have a problem with horizontal banding appearing on certain bits of the image. see attachement.
Rendered the image fine in IRAY on max 2011 but now I moved to 2012 the same file creates these wierd lines.
Takes too long to clone it in Pshop and the results are not great.
It isn't running out of memory on the card.

I have a lot of RAW+JPG pictures (shot as RAW+JPG or previously converted from RAW to JPG with other programs), when importing them to Lightroom, I can choose to treat them as the same picture or as separate pictures.
At first glance, they should of cause be treated as the same picture (because they are the same picture), and they do indeed appear as "RAW+JPG" in LR, but how do I:
- View the JPG? (not critical, but it would be nice to be able to compare the JPG with the LR results)- Add metadata (tags, title, caption, etc.) to the JPG file and not just the RAW file? (I have enabled "write metadata to file")
If treated as separate pictures, they behave as one would expect, but it is not that convenient to have two of the same pictures side-by-side.
- Can I auto-stack RAWs and JPGs?- Can I write metadata (tags, title, caption, etc.) to the entire stack in one go?
1. I need JPG versions of my pictures for e-mail, web, viewing on my TV etc.
2. I REALLY don't want to be dependent on LR in the future. If I have spend hours and hours fine tuning my pictures, and only have them saved as RAW, I would need LR till the day I die. And it doesn't end there, my kids, my grand kids and so on, would also need LR to view the pictures (at lease in the quality I would like them to be viewed).

I am trying to delete records from a database file by using the erase event of the AutoCad Document Object, that is:
Private Sub AcadDocument_ObjectErased(ByVal ObjectID As Long)
My problem is that my database identifies objects by their handles in the drawing file. How do I convert the ObjectID into the object handle? I tried:
strHandle$ = Hex$(ObjectID)
but it didn't return the handle of the object that was being deleted

I noticed that when I open a 16bit ppm in GIMP 2.8, the file opens without the 'gimp can't handle 16bit, it will loose data, etc...' notification. But if I open a tiff version of the very same raw file, the notification does pop up. My understanding is that current GIMP 2.8 can't handle 16bit, regardless of file format. Is that right?

For editing a jpeg file (e.g., sharpening), first I create a duplicate layer. Now, I have two layers: Layer 1 and Background layers. Editing is done only on the duplicate layer. That's how I am able to keep the original jpeg file. When editing is completed on Layer 1, I got to save the edited image. Before saving it, what should I do with the Background layer? Should I delete it or merge/flatten with Layer 1?

I need to connect to specific instances of AutoCAD and Plant3D. The Running Object Table (ROT) only holds one instance so GetObject wont work.
I've tried getting the correct instance using the hwnd with the AccessibleObjectFromWindow function. I'am thinking the easiest way is to autoload a plugin to communicate with, maybe through a service.

I'm trying to animate a phone handle cord that moves with the phone handle, i tried with the massFX but still didn't get it right.

I have this issue with my ik handles. in the tutorials I watch their IK's are always perfectly straight. Mine area always crooked. I'm sure it has something to do with the orientation of my joints, but why are my joints messed up? even if I reorent them it doesn't work.

Is it possible to attach a door and a handle into one slider?
For example, slider turns the handle up to value 30%, when slider reach the value 30% doors are starting open until are fully opened.
