3ds Max Animation :: Point Cache While Network Rendering Ignored

Dec 26, 2011

backburner is a good tool, but it doesnt always work as expected... everything that is not an image is simply ignored while sent over the network. hence problems of "missing map". (and the server does not render anything if anything is missing) be it an audio file, or anything else. like the point cache file. max has no problem to send the XML file, but will not even look at the MC that is linked. those particular ones are giving me a very bad time dealing with them.

is there a way to trick max into baking point cache into a vertex animation or something ? (i know maya does it, but i never found a way for that in max) or maybe tricking backburner into sending EVERY files related to the max file. also, the "save as archive" doesnt take it eighter. i suspect someone forgot to implement it in the function..

"The FBX plug-in cannot export the Geometry Cache for the following reason(s): No set is selected for geometry cache export, the selected set is empty, or the selection set is applied to the shape node of the object instead of its transform node"

before that , I create my cache , and my set with all the geometry but after selecting and saving it as a presset my set just disapear. i need to do it on maya ... I have done it already on MAX and works fine.

3ds Max :: Can't Get Text To Cap With Extrude Modifier Or Bevel Modifier

I just sat down to use 3Ds Max '12 for the first time today after upgrading from 2010. This will probably be a simple fix, but I can't get any text to cap with the extrude modifier or bevel modifier. It happens with every typeface I've tried. I even tried using the cap holes modifier. Never had this problem with previous version of 3Ds.

AutoCAD Inventor :: Add-in That Would Place Work Point At CoG Of Model

Jul 12, 2012

I just upgraded hardware and moved from Inventor 10 in XP 32 bit to Inventor 10 in Windows 7 64 bit. Previously I had an add-in that would place a work point at the CoG of a model. The new installation does not, and since I was not the original user of the old computer I don't know where it came from.

I'm assuming it was a 3rd party add-in or something that does not install automatically with the 2010 mechanical design suite (SDK tools maybe?). Any link or where to find this tool in the installed files.

AutoCAD Inventor :: Work Point Inclusion Location Incorrect

Dec 10, 2013

The workpoint I have in my model is in the location I want.

When I INCLUDE  it in my IDW file it shows up in the wrong location.

Glad I noticed that, I would have dimensioned to the wrong location and ended up with a scrapped part.

I wonder what would cause this? Maybe a bug? I looked at the model from every possible angle and the point is in the exact location I need.

AutoCAD Inventor :: 2012 - Work Point In DXF Of Sheet Metal Part

Jul 16, 2012

We have a custom-made sheet metal punch consisting of a 5x5 matrix of 1/8" holes. We export flat patterns from Inventor as DXFs.

We normally make DXFs by creating a view of the flat pattern on a blank IDW template (no border, no title block, nothing) and export that view as a DXF. This lets us orient the view at will, unlike right-clicking on the flat pattern in the browser and selecting Save Copy As.

When the sheet metal guy assigns tooling in his software, he needs to get each punch to "lock onto" the corresponding feature in the DXF. Normally this isn't a problem, but it has been with this gang punch. The center hole of the punch needs to lock onto the correct hole in the DXF, and it can't always seem to do it. I've sat alongside the guy as he does this, and in his software the centers of the circles show up as dots/points. But on this punch, there isn't necessarily a dot in the center of every circle, and it's possible that the center hole, which really needs the dot, won't have one.

I've come up with a workaround for this: a work point in the IPT. In the attached part, it's feature Tooling1. The sheet metal guy confirms that if I include the work point in the DXF as a point (in the AutoCAD sense), he can lock onto it. However, I find that if I generate a DXF from the flat-pattern IDW, the point is lost. If I generate an ACAD DWG from the IDW and save the DWG as a DXF, the point comes through in the DXF. But that's an extra step.

Is there a way to export directly from IDW to DXF and not lose the work point? Or is this as good as it gets?

For the sake of simplicity, the attached part has no bends. I realize that if I did, I'd have to re-create the points in the flat pattern, but that's another discussion.

3ds Max :: UVW Unwrap Modifier

Apr 18, 2011

I'm using the UVW unwrap on a plane I am currently working on. The bitmap is the exact same size as the print screen of the flattened map but when I bring in the bitmap to match up with the unwrapped modifier the bitmap is completely skewed to shit.

So I uncheck Use Custom Bitmap Size and then it does this. It makes my object much wider than it actually is and there is no way to adjust it because the scale tool only works on the whole object at the same time and not just one axis.

When I do that it does not project the other half of the sphere even when it's on flip and x axis. The mirror part is kind of on the back side of the sphere. What happens is I have to rotate the mirror part to line it up and up the thresh hold a lot to get the back side to connect.

3ds Max :: MultiRes Modifier Crashing?

Sep 5, 2012

I have found that MultiRes often crashes Max when you press the generate button.

Attached is an example scene with a simple mesh. If you apply a MultiRes modifier to it, press Generate, then press Generate again, it crashes Max.

It has happened in the past too with other meshes. What it is about some kinds of meshes that crash the MultiRes Generate function.

Common steps that have not solved any problems:

# Reset XForm
# Convert To Mesh then Convert to Editable Poly

You may ask why not simply refrain from clicking generate twice. The reason is that I discovered this while troubleshooting game export tools where the MultiRes modifier is programatically told to Generate at different points for various reasons. The automated functions do not know if it was ever already generated.

Some suggest using ProOptimizer (which I often do) but the functions I'm working with are being used by people who don't always have access to ProOptimizer... and there are times where MultiRes actually makes better results.

3ds Max :: Bend Modifier / Plane To Sphere

Aug 8, 2013

I'd like to use the bend modifier to transform a square plane into a sphere with a diameter equal to the side length of the original plane (to reproduce the approach for UV mapping a sphere described here).

I've been able to bend a vertical, square plane into something very close to a sphere using two bend modifiers (the first bending the x axis by 180 degrees with a direction of 0 degrees and the second bending the y axis by 360 degrees with a direction of 90 degrees). It's necessary to move the center of the second bend modifier to obtain a sphere.

However, there are two problems with the result: the diameter of the sphere is not equal to the side length of the initial plane and it's difficult to position the center of the second bend modifier such that the sphere doesn't have holes at its poles.

The first problem occurs because (as far as I can tell) the bend modifier assigns its gizmo an initial scaling such that the object to which the bend modifier is being applyed is bent but not stretched. This is reasonable default behaviour and applying an FFD 2x2x2 modifier after the first bend modifier allows the (now bent) plane to be scaled such that the height of the sphere that ultimately results equals the side length of the initial plane. However, when the second bend modifier is applied, there doesn't seem to be an easy way to precisely position its center such that the sphere's width equals its height (the next step would be to weld the vertices at the two poles). This is also the cause of the second problem since positioning the bend modifier's center correctly would also remove the holes at the poles.I've attached a max file (in a zip file) for reference (also see the left-to-right sequence in the image below):

- Plane001 is the initial square plane
- Plane002 is after the first bend modifier has been applied
- Plane003 is after adjustments have been made with the FFD modifier
- Plane004 is after the second bend modifier has been applied
- Plane005 is after the center of the second bend modifier has been adjusted.
