3ds Max :: Integrating Keyed Footage Into Virtual Newsroom

Mar 3, 2011

I am using a pre-built virtual newsroom set. The artist has setup the scene using final render and in the environment there is 'beach_probe.hdr' I have tracked the talent on greenscreen (w/alpha) and want to import the talent with the tracking into the set. What is the preferred method for placing the talent in 3d space for proper placement and using the tracking data?

Photoshop :: Cropping To Keyed In Dimensions

Jul 21, 2013

I am having problems with the cropping tool, Working with a fine art 800dpi 16 bit scan and I want to create an accurate crop to keyed in dimensions, in this case 12 cm x 12cm. Everything I try to key in the width and height dimensions, leaving resolution blank, I get varying results.

Either the crop box just sticks to the original scan size which is bigger or is not drawing to 12 x 12cm, usually smaller when I check off against rulers, despite keying in 12 x 12cm! Erratic results for any other dimensions I type in when I view against rulers. Tried clearing in case settings are sticky but to no avail. Can do this all day long in Elements 11 with consistent results. Tried everything in CS 6.

After Effects :: Using A Keyed Layer As A Track Matte?

Sep 18, 2013

I am experiencing a strange issue on a comp I am working with, and due to the way its set up, and the pre-comps etc, I am not even sure how to go about asking the questions!

1) To start:

I have a comp with 3 Footage layers. One 4K Moving background image from Video blocks, interpreted at 25FPS. One R3D clip of one of our ships, camera on a tripod and ship "Waggling" slightly up and down - kept in RAW mode for clean keying. A duplicate of this layer, used as the colour corrected layer.

I have a Comp that contains the RAW footage, Keyed, and the colour corrected footage below it and set to Alpha matte.

Above is the settings and the output of the ships wing.

This is then precomped, and engine glows, contrails and thrusters etc are added with Null objects, lights, optical flares and particular:

at this point, everything looks great, this is then further precomped into a new comp, where it is placed above the background layer - and here is where the issue happens. It is almost as if the trackmatte is a frame or two behind the colour layer:

<-- notice the blue edging from the blue screen.

I track these layers backwards and forwards through the precomps, and I cant figure out why this happens?

(there are keyframes on the trackers above, and the contrail precomps for position, and a scale change over time on the ship layer in the final comp.) If I pull the ships precomp into the final comp as a new layer - the issue remains. If I double click to open the ship layer, the issue is not visible.

Maybe I'm doing this totally wrong, but why can't I output just the man and a transparent background? The key is clean in Premiere. I want to send a client a cleanly keyed video for for further editing.

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Integrating Infraworks / 3Ds Max Design

Jul 23, 2013

The following video show a dam in China using Infraworks and Civil 3D URL....

During the first 25 secs or so, there is a sequence showing a disposal area created in Civil 3D but with a texture that isn't the draped aerial image (and there are further examples of this elsewhere).

How does one get surfaces etc that aren't derived from a corridor to show in this way in Infraworks. There doesn't seem to be any workflow in the available information to address non linear projects.

Additionally the 3ds Max workflows seem to be geared up for linear projects e.g. roads only - any tips for non linear projects e.g. earthworks platforms?

Photoshop :: Procedure For Integrating Alpha Channel When Saving As DDS File

Sep 11, 2013

One project I use Photoshop CS4 for is painting aircraft used with Microsoft Flight Simulator X (FSX). Each aircraft is downloaded as a "Paint Kit".I paint and add layers onto the kit until the aircraft resembles the design I chose.  The paint kit includes a background,  base parts usually in white, and an assortment of layers adding physical wear, shading, lines and rivets you see on actual aircraft.

Additionally, the kit includes an RGB Alpha Channel and Specular Maps.  In this application, the Alpha channel provides the reflectivity or gloss on the aircraft paint.  The Specular maps provide a sheen much like the subtle reflections you see from a metal flake paint job when the sun hits it directly.

Once all painting and manipulation is complete, the kit is "cut" into specific sizes.  Once the kit is cut, each section is saved as a DDS file using NVidia tools.  The resulting DDS files are placed into folders within the main FSX program folder.  The FSX program "assembles" the sections and processes the different layers and channels resulting in aircraft that are incredibly detailed and realistic.

My problem is I don't know how to properly integrate and preserve the Alpha channel during the "Flatten Image" and when saving the file as a dds file.  As you can see in the "Layers" section in the picture, the Alpha channel is already made.  I just don't know what to do with it to preserve it and ensure the reflectivity it provides is visible in the final product.

what I need to know isn't what the alpha does, but how to properly integrate it into the final product.  I've searched for this info for the last several days, but I've had no luck in finding specific information on how to do that. URL....

VideoStudio :: Is It Ok To Save 50p Footage As 30p

May 12, 2011

I can see that saving my 50p footage as 25p would be ideal as it would just drop every other frame. However vsx3 doesn't give me the 25p option. mp4 hd 1080x1920p only offers 30p

Is this because I set vs up as PAL region ? If I changed it to ntsc would it then offer me the 25p option?

I'm really trying to find my best "saving " option for my 1920 x 1080p footage. I use 50p so I can get good slow motion but 25p or 30p would be good output if it plays nicely..

VideoStudio :: DVD Footage Restoration

Apr 4, 2013

I have a DVD of some old 1937 film footage. It was obviously taken as a direct transfer from degraded film stock. I have loaded it into Videostudio from the DVD (which VS has loaded as .mpg files) I have applied some sharpening and visual filters and want to export the footage. Is it best to export to DV and then use that to remake a DVD or burn the DVD direct from VS? I am assuming that trying to reburn the DVD will involve some re-encoding anyway, so either way isn't going to make a difference other than having a DV file to archive.

what I am trying to do with reference to the file conversion aspect and minimising loss of quality.

Photoshop :: Virtual Reality Output

Mar 12, 2009

Can Adobe Photoshop CS4 create seamless panoramas and output virtual reality Quicktime (or other format) "movies?"

I will capture a scene using a QVTR tripod head and use exposure bracketing to make sure the scene is captured in HDR quality.

I want to end up with an interactive product that is ready to be inserted into a web-page.

(I have CS2 and would upgrade for that capability.)

If CS4 can't do this, please suggest software that can.

I think my current version (CS2) can do the assembling. But, I'm not sure about the seamless edge. I know that CS2 cannot create the output that I want.

3ds Max :: Aliasing Of Images Used In Virtual Studio?

Nov 12, 2013

I cannot use any images in a Virtual Studio setup. I mapped the image onto the plane and really poor aliasing is occurring in versions 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014. Today, I re-installed my subscription version of 2009 and now the antialiasing is almost eliminated and I can go back to modeling which I haven't done for several years.

I have tried everything in 2014 and the other versions listed above, see the attachments. It is impossible to model anything accurately and in detail of human character images. I did not have this problem in ANY VERSION prior to 2010. So, Autodesk, what the devil did you do to screw up the Virtual Studio image set-up? I have tried ALL of the CHOICES for drivers offered in preferences/viewports AND there is no configuration available for the recommended nitrous driver.

AutoCad 3D :: Virtual Reality Modeling

Aug 30, 2013

the basic processes of Virtual Realty and Clash Detection modelling for Highway design. I've been asked by my employer to start developing skills in this area but I'm currently at a loss as to where to start with it all.

I'm a very competent Technician with AutoCAD 2D and have some experience with 3D modelling in AutoCAD, but the three software packages that I have been asked to 'learn' are Civil 3D, which I have attended an introductory course on but still only really understand the very basics of, 3DS MAX Design and NavisWorks Simulate, neither of which I have any experience with.

Basically, what I'm asking for now is, what practice role does each product play and in what order should I try and get experience with them? The AutoDesk website is full of jargon, sales language and amazing high resolution images of scheme concepts but nothing that says in plain English what it all does and how it all works together.

Lightroom :: Virtual Copies Not Visible

May 30, 2013

1. Made virtual copies, count goes up, can't see them in grid in library, develop, or in loupe.  Thought they were stacked, but when I went to Photo>stacking> the rest is all grayed out...can't do anything.  "set as master copy" also grayed out,.  Read somewhere "preferences for lightroom might be corrupt"????   I tried to do the thing in the library to correct the preferences,:(on moubntain lion 10.8.3), but in the user file there is no library...so I then looked up how to find the hidden library, but I can't  find the stuff to do THAT!!!  And, there IS a library on my hard drive, but when I open THAT up, there isn't anything about preferences.

I JUST bought this 2 mos ago--how can it have corrupt preferences when I only just started using it???--used it once, then discovered diddn't have right processor in old computer...bought a new computer...took several weeks to get (bought increased ram)...now I am just using for first time today.  Started importing, but they are all coming up missing photoi (when I had lightroomn installed on old computer, I deleted uit and pics), then reinstalled and it was migrated over to this new computer.  I looked up how to massive transfer missing photos and there is NO folder with a question mark, so I have to do hundreds and hundreds manually--can I tell you I am really hating LR4.4?

Lightroom :: Virtual Copies Naming

Nov 13, 2012

When I created a virtual copy of an image in LR3, and then I renamed the images, the virtual copies would have the new name with a hyphen.i.e if there were two virtual copies associate with the file, the renamed sequence would be as follows jcp0001, jcp0001-1(vc), jcp0001-2(vc), jcp0004

This had the advantage of keeping my file numbers in sync when I uploaded them to my online lab (Pictage) and the client gave me a file name. In LR4 renaming sequencing doesn't take into account the virtual copies in terms of the chronological # and compensating for the vcs. So the same sequence would be jcp0001, jcp0001-copy(vc), jcp0001-copy2(vc), jcp0002..This has the affect of misalignment my files with those of the online host.

VideoStudio :: Footage Spasming In X3 Editor

Apr 4, 2012

You can see what I mean by spasming: [uRL] ... (jump to about 30 seconds in).

The above video is the 1st time that happened. It just happened to me again for the 2nd time, yesterday. I checked the raw footage and it doesn't spasm, so it's not my recording software. I loaded it into Sony Vegas and it doesn't spasm. It's JUST in VideoStudio. But it also displays as spasming when rendered out.

Why it has happened only twice in about 1000 opportunities. And, to show it's not a fluke... when it happened yesterday, I re-did the work immediately after and it still spasmed. However, I recorded something else today and it worked perfectly.

I use WMCapture for screen recording and also had Audacity running for capturing my microphone. However, I did the same thing a week ago, with no issues. It's 2 completely isolated incidents.
