Sep 22, 2013We are looking for a solution to manage the inventory of a very extensive network with mainly linear assets. Instead of a standard database/inventory solution, we would like to manage the inventory from a plan, from autocad DWG. Meaning that all the objects and relations between objects are defined in the DWG, then uploaded to a relational database and used by various maintenance and operational utilities.
how we would define the relations between objects. For example, how would we say that one object is attached to another object? Can you make a reference from one object to another in the attributes of a block? (but it has to be a strong reference, to an ID).

Sep 27, 2012I am investigating the use of Photoshop to count discreet objects in a complex image. The various selection tools do a good job of automatically selecting the objects, which do not overlap, but I cannot find a count of the number. I'm using PHE 7. Does the facility exist in this version?

Is there a way to do this in Corel Draw? I'll be counting hundreds of images so it needs to be a fairly quick method of marking each one.

Sep 11, 2013I have been using GIMP to count the number of birds in a colony by putting a round spot on each bird using the airbrush tool. This works fine as I can size the spot to suit and alter the opacity to leave some detail. But I need to be able to count the number of spots! This should only count the spots and not every time I adjust the viewable part of the photo to keep spotting! An addon to the GIMP program would be wonderful.

May 21, 2012I have a complex vector group of objects (logo) that uses text, paths, etc... I am duplicating this grouped object, and trying to design a press wall with the logo repeated multiple times. I duplicate the logo multiple times and place them on the page, but when I try to use the "distribute objects" tool, it breaks up my logo(s) into their consituent objects and distibutes the pieces on the page, which is very annoying... how do I keep my logo together AND be able to distribute it evenly across my banner?

Jun 11, 2011In the old versions of TDX4 and TDX5 (?) it was possible to have the dimensions within the object group in which the measured object was part. In TDX5 SP1 it seems impossible to move dimensions into any group. They remain a list apart within the layer in which the measured objects are part.
Is this correct and is this an intentional "correction"? If so, I strongly propose to make it possible again to keep the dimensions together with the measured object in whatever group that measured object is in. When you have hundreds of objects within a layer, it really is a unmanageable nuisance that the dimensions are all at the top level of a layer.
I found another (related?) problem when applying dimensions on groups of objects. As soon as you have attached a dimension to one or more objects in a group (the dimension itself being outside the group at the top level of a layer), you can only select the group as a whole at the top level. You cannot select objects within the group. Also this problem was not in X4. I don't know whether this problem is typically X5 SP1, as I did not test it in the original X5. Also this is a real nuisance wasting a lot of time, because you have to delete all dimensions when you want to change something in a group.
This all I have also reported directly to Corel. I found a work around to both problems:
1. Ungroup the group and any subgroups.
2. Apply the dimension lines
3. Regroup again also including the dimension lines
Now you can access the dimension lines and all separate objects in the group.
Illustrator :: Hidden Objects When Moving Layers / Groups Or Artboards
May 12, 2012I am using Illustrator CS5.5 on a Mac.
Sometimes, after moving stuff around (groups, layers or artboards), I notice that hidden objects didn't move with everything else.
How this can be if no objects are locked ?I cannot make this happen on purpose with a simple example and it is really annoying not to be sure that everything was moved properly.

Feb 16, 2014I'm using LR to manage and inventory over 40K digital and scanned photos (JPG, TIF). I use the keywords/tags to categorize and search for relevant photos.
I'm also an amateur geneaologist and am scanning thousands of historical documents primarily as PDF files (and JPG/TIF). And I have a huge library of digital videos (primarily MPEG4, MPEG2, MOV, and AVI) that I would like to inventory and categorize/tag.
Of course, I'm not expecting LR to be able to edit the documents and videos, but it would be great to be able to import them into LR's database so I can search for content.

Sep 12, 2011I just learned (after 16 years...) that it's been possible to drill down through successive compound objects within groups without using the new V7 feature "Edit inside".
I'd always used Ctrl+Click within a group to select the object in it I want, but could never select just a group that was within--only a single object. But apparently Ctrl+Click is only intended to select the bottom-most (leaf) object of the group (tree). If instead you use Ctrl+Alt+Click, you can click through each level of a group.
So for example if you made two groups of 3 objects and then grouped the two groups together, you can select the whole group first, then one of the other groups within, then one of the objects within that group.
I can't believe I didn't know this. Shows what I know. And what amazes me more is that I didn't figure it out given that you can Alt+Click to select through overlapping objects.

Oct 13, 2011I have 2 files that are acting weird. They were created earlier this summer but when I open them now, 99.9% of the geometry is invisible with nitrous and the file is very laggy. I want to get an alphabetized list of the geometry so I can start merging in pieces and keep track of what I'm doing.
Any way to export a list like that?? Or better yet..how to trouble shoot the bad files?

May 12, 2013I'm trying to make thumbnails for video's for youtube. So my idea is that the nr 1 is on thumbnail 1, then on the thumbnail for the second video, it says 2, etc. But every time i have to delete the number and write a new one. Is there a way of doing that automatically? so that it just makes p.e. 10 thumbnails, with numbers from 1-10?

Jan 10, 2014In plantation design, especially for ground covers that spread across an area, I have to distinguish each plant by hatch pattern. so they're hatched(due to the twisting shapes, with oh so much pain), and the problem comes in when counting area of each plant. Mind there are altogether hundreds of hatch objects to be counted and sorted into dozens of plant types.
I had counted on data exporting, but then i find that hundreds of hatches simply don't have the area attribute. not a surprise, since hatching process was already problematic enough with the borders.
So I figured the quickest way would be to identify those without this attribute and try to fix up their borders. but you can't identify them from a data table, not without the handle number. you can't quickselect by absent attributes either. I'm completed at a dead end now.
I know there's the manual way.. but do I really have to spot those hundreds and process their borders one by one?
here's part of the problematic plan: some of the faulty hatch is colored red, but there are many more hidden in plain sight.
