3ds Max Animation :: Hiding Parts Of Mesh While Skinning Using Biped

Dec 17, 2013

I am trying to find out if it is possible to hide parts of a mesh while I skin certain parts of a mesh using biped .  Here is what I have tried. Below my skin modifier on my stack is my edit mesh. I open up edit mesh and select the faces I would like to hide and hide them .Then I return to my skin modifier and skin parts of my mesh. but then I reliased that my biped is no longer skinned to my mesh if I hide a porition of the mesh. Even When I unhide the faces the mesh is no longer skinned to the biped. The biped moves but my mesh no longer follows. I tried deleting the skinned biped bones on the skin modifier and re adding them but it still did not do anything.

I know there must be a way to hide parts while you skin. By the way I am using MAX10

3ds Max Animation :: Motion Capture - Hands Closed On Biped Animation

Nov 18, 2013

I have a list of motion capture, those mocap didn't track the fingers so the hands are always opened. In some of these mocap I need the biped hand to be closed. I've been looking for a solution for about a day now. I think I'm in the good way which is to create a biped layer animation where the hands are closed and link the hands of that layer to the original layer. so I would be able to save that layer and apply it to every mocap animation that need to be readjusted. The only problem is that I'm not sure if it's the better way and I don't know the procedure.

3ds Max Animation :: Rig Distortion After Skinning?

Apr 25, 2013

recently ran into some trouble when rigging a character. I selected the character geometry, added a skin modifier, and attached all the CAT bones and muscles that I had created for my character.

The problem begins when I try to rotate the CAT bones in the rig. If I rotate the torso bone for instance, and then press undo, the mesh sometimes pops back but the CAT bones remain in place.

Another issue is that after I reload one of my earlier saves in which I had applied a skin modifier, the rig becomes highly distorted.

3ds Max Animation :: Skinning - Vertices Moving Out Of Place

Dec 23, 2013

I rigged a model and everything was working fine. I then started going into the blocking phase of some animation I was going to do with it. After a review it was requested that I put some extra bit of rigging on the model. We basically wanted to have the ability to grab both eyes with a controller and pull them around positionally and have the bit of skin they cover follow along with the eyes. So I dropped in some bpones where the eyes are, made the controller bits, linked everything up, so far so good. My problem comes when I try to skin the mesh to the new bones I just dropped in. The verts I have selected, even when given a weight of .1 seem to shoot forward in space. They dont seem to be respecting the bones current position that they are being weighted to.

I fear this may have something to do with the fact that I have animation in this scene which I know isnt ideal but were doing a series of xreffing so our master rig file also contains our master animation data. Seperate files are saved out as backups but as far as working files, yeah, its all in there. So could this be whats causing my verts to jump forward in space when I am skinning a bone that they currently are at its position? Or perhaps some errant transform? In the image I have selected the two rings beneath his eyes and given them a weight of .1. As you can see the verts are shooting out in front of the mesh when they should be staying in place at the eye bone I am trying to skin them to.

3ds Max Animation :: Rigging And Skinning A Game Character In Pieces?

Nov 28, 2011

I'm wanting to know the best way to make different game outfits for a character. I want to be able to switch out between a couple different torsos and still have the same head model and rigging with animations still working.

I'm not sure if this is the best way or not but I detached a cylinder into two separate pieces.

Then I skinned and weight painted one half of the cylinder, weight painting the seam 50% to both bones and decreased that amount as I went father away from the seam. Then doing the same thing to the other half of the cylinder.

For example if this was the game character I would detach his arms, legs, and head from his torso and do the same thing I did with the cylinder.

I've included a link to a video of the cylinder bending.

3ds Max Animation :: Skinning - Auto Select Verts That Are Being Influenced

Dec 5, 2013

I am in the process of skinning a character and I was wondering if Max had a feature/option/button that allows you to select all the verts that are currently being influenced by the particular bone you currently have selected? It seems like a feature like that would make setting up the blends between bones a lot easier then having to select all the verts in question each time and then additional verts that you are wanting to weight to.

Maya Animation :: Interactive Skin Binding - Whole Rigging And Skinning Process

Sep 18, 2013

I'm pretty new to the whole rigging and skinning process, so in order to skin my model I've used the Interactive Skin Bind Tool (Skin>Bind Skin>Interactive Skin Bind Tool) which so far hasn't caused any problems. But when I started to modify the weighting on the geometry it appeared that the weights are reversed meaning that when using the Interactive Skin Bind Tool (Skin>Edit Smooth Skin>Interactive Skin Bind) on the left leg, I actually modify the weights on the right leg and vice versa (see image below).

(Btw, I'm using Maya2013 Students Version).

3ds Max Animation :: Biped Unwanted Rotation Between Frames

Feb 11, 2011

I need a biped to stay still in an animation for a few frames. What I'm doing is say I copy a pose from frame 10, then I want the biped to remain still until frame 40. So I paste the pose there and fix the feet keys. As a result the biped position is the same in both frames, but when I play the animation I get some unwanted rotations between these frames I can't get rid of.

3ds Max Animation :: Link Biped Head To Objects?

Mar 13, 2011

how to link a biped's head to an object? I can link it to other objects as the parent, but I need the head to be the Child.

I'm trying to animate a Terminator robot model I found here (it was a free download):

[[URL]

The model is rigged to a biped, and I'm trying to animate its head to follow the exact movements of a person's head in some footage I shot. I used PFTrack to motion-track the person's head (using geometry tracking) and exported the track as a MaxScript. So I run the script in Max and it produces a camera and head model which exactly follows the movements of the original person.

how can I link the Terminator's head (or rather, the biped controlling the Terminator's head) to the animated model? Better yet, how do you link a biped's head to Any object? I can link any object TO the head, but I cannot make the biped's head the Child. How to do this? I also tried using Select IK Object in the Motion panel, which works for other parts of the biped, but not the head.

3ds Max Animation :: Biped Rotation In Viewport Not Working

Jan 21, 2013

I'm having a strange problem using loaded .BIP file on a biped in 3D studio Max. The biped doesn't allow me to make rotation and translation changes on the head, attached bones and the feet and hands. This only occurs in the viewport!

Altering the rotation and translation keys in the biped workbench editor works fine. but obviously not very practical . I already tried to add a new layer above the current biped animation. But without successful results Also exporting the animation to a .BIP file and reassign it to the biped didn't work.

One thing I have done is using the motion flow system. After finalizing the animation I created an unified motion which is available in the flowgraph options. In order to convert the motion flow structure to real keys.

3ds Max :: Retime Tool Not Working With Biped Animation

Apr 28, 2012

New Retime tool feature in Max 2013; when i tried with biped animation, its not working, but it works with every other object. Workflow which i followed:

1.Selected all the biped parts.
2.Open curve editor. (it shows all the animation keys and curves)
3.Applied Retime All (Retime tools shows up)
4.Double clicked to create start and end marker.
5.Now, when i move any of the retime marker, the keys are not responding, only the marker moves and there is no change in animation timing too. everything stays same.

does the retime tool is not applicable for biped. I tried the same procedure with other animated objects. It works fine.

3ds Max Animation :: Modifying Bone Size In A Biped?

Jan 24, 2014

I have created a model of an alien, and I wish to rig it upto a biped. The reason I would like to be rigged to a biped opposed from using bones is because I wish to apply motion capture files to the biped from iPi Mocap.

However, the problem I am having at the moment is that because my model is an unorthodox shape, and does not follow the figure of a human, is how do I modify and change the sizes of each individual bone? I've tried using the scale tool on the bones to no avail, as well as searching through the options. Are there values I can change to make them bigger?

In the picture I have attached, you can see that the hip on the biped, is significantly higher than the model, meaning that when it comes time to skin the model, it'll think that the aliens body are part of the legs.

3ds Max Animation :: Animating Skeleton - Connecting To Offset Biped

Aug 1, 2013

I am animating a skeleton.  As a result, I'm not using physique-- I'm just connecting different mesh objects to different bones in the biped, and I'm good to go.

Here's my issue: I don't want my biped inside my mesh.  I want to stick it off to the side somewhere where it's not interfering with my actual mesh, and I can do my links easily by just dragging over to them.

Naturally, when I do this, things rotate around the biped's pivot point rather than where I want them.

Is there any way to offset the biped-- just for interaction, and visually?  I just want it outside of my mesh so I can animate the biped without having to look at it all merged up with my mesh.

3ds Max Animation :: Errors Saving And Loading Biped Animations?

Feb 25, 2014

I'm working on a project where I need to duplicate all animated sequences for both a male and female character. I currently have two biped rigged characters. I animate one, save the .bip animation file and then load into the other. I check the boxes for "Load max Objects" as I have some objects (like a glass of water) set as an IK pivot object. It loads those into the new scene along with the new pose, but the pose goes wrong, thought just with the arms (which are incidentally the only parts that have a seperate object as an IK pivot object.)

Here's a screenshot to show what I mean:

This incorrect animation happens whether the .bip animation file I save is loaded into the other character or loaded into the same character in it's original T-pose.

my website is [URL] and if you resize your window past 1500px, or scroll over to the right, you can see one of the images just waiting until it is activated. i'd like to hide everything past the 1500px mark but i can't figure out how to do that.

the Edge Runtime script is in the head, including the <style> for .edgeLoad and .updateBack elelments. the <div id="stage" class="updateBack"> is the first line of code in the html, then the tag is closed and i have my main container.

3ds Max :: Deform Parts Of Mesh By Helix-Spline-parameters?

Mar 30, 2012

I've got a Mesh which consists of several Helixes with regular Tubes in between. They are all welded together, so it is one long Mix of Helix and tubes. In Animation, the amount of Turns in each Helix needs to be changed (from 0 Turns, up to 50 e.g.).

First I attached bones to each helix, but strechting the bones only leads to stretch the Helix - not reducing the Turns.
In another attempt, I took a regular Tube with a Path-Deform-Modifier and a helix-spline, so I had good control of the Mesh, by changing the splines-parameters. But since my Mesh consists of several individual helixes, I cant use it cuz i can only select 1 spline in the deformation-modifier.

3ds Max :: How To Add Animation To 3D Botanical Tree Mesh

May 9, 2012

I used ReconstructMe to scan a botanical tree (with a few of trunks and leaves). The result I got is a 3d mesh botanical tree. I open them in 3dsmax. Now I want to add the motion to each leaf and trunk. I am beginner in 3dsmax.

By the way, I think all the trunks and leaves are considered as one object. Do I need to break them seperately and add animation to each of them?

I read some tutorial for character animation, which use biped or skining. However, they are used for human, aren't they? I wonder if I could apply biped/skining for botanical tree since their structure are different.

3ds Max Animation :: Cable Moving With Leg Mesh

Mar 12, 2011

I am currently working on a project with a mech, I have the leg modeled and partially rigged as seen in the picture below. My issue is that when I move the leg the cables (I'm mostly concerned with the ones in the front) don't deform with the mesh of the leg, like it's resting on top of the leg. I know why the cable isn't going with the leg mesh thats obvious, but I can't get it to go with the mesh.

I've tried reactor, and I haven't even been able to get the cables to come up in the preview window, I tried using a soft body for the cable and rigid for the leg. Another issue I was having though is I was wondering if it was possible to use something other than reactor so the cable moves with the leg in the view port, just like bones moving other parts in real time.

So to try achieving this is actually went and created a bone system for one of the cables and tried applying a skin modifier to the mesh, I feel like this would work great, except I haven't figured out what to attach the bones, or mesh to.

The first picture is the leg in a neutral stance, the second is showing the leg moving and the cable just sitting there. The one I'm particular about is the one in the front with the "U" dip at the bottom.

I'm running 3ds Max 2011 x64

is there any way to delete a mesh based on frame? I have an object that fades to nothing after it's use is done, at frame 3000 say, and I was wondering if there was a way to just delete the mesh after that. Normally I would use vol select and a deletemesh modifier, but those seem to mess with the Pathdeform WSM a fair amount. This is really more for the sake of optimization, since that's around a million polygons that are still there, and making my poly count look silly high. Currently using the visibility track to make it vanish.
