Nov 18, 2013I have an assembly I've been working on for a while. It was fine until after opening it one day, any changes I make cause inventor to freeze up for several minutes before completing whatever it is that I was trying to accomplish. Most of the changes are with constraints (adding parts and constraining them or changing constraints that were already in place), but I even tried to just rotate a part and Inventor locked up. I'll get the green loading bar at the bottom right corner, and it will run through a couple of times before it stops. The freezing seems to be tied to this assembly only, but I'm trying to find any other way to fix the problem before having to completely restart the assembly. I've worked with bigger assemblies before and have never run into this problem.

Feb 20, 2013Here's the situation:
I have a tube, approximately 16" O.D., 14" high, and 1/8" thick. This is all a single part.
I'm trying to cut 3.5" wide and 4" tall slots around the top. The number of slots can be 1-6.
I'm driving the size and slots from a spreadsheet.
The orientation of the slots can have the first slot anywhere from 0 to 360 degrees. (FWIW, the spreadsheet redefines 0 and .0001 and 360 and 359.99).
Anyhow, as long as the first slot is between 0-180, it works just great. Once you pass 180, however, the verticals of the sketch flip so it's barely cutting the notch at all.
To make the cuts i've created a sketch off the top of the cylinder and drawn a construction line at 0 and another and put a driven dimension between them to set the correct position of the angle. I think create a workplane off that line tanget it to it's end point. At that point, draw sketch, extrude, etc.
I've also create a workplan off one of the origin planes and the origin Y axis that's perpendicular to the notch (angle driven by spreadsheet and equation in workplanes angle offset). Offset a 2nd plane tangent to the O.D. of the tube, created a sketch, extrude etc.
In both instances, when the angle crosses 180 degrees, the sketch flips on me.
What can I do to keep the sketch from flipping?

Jan 11, 2013I use inventor 2013. Whenever I start a new sketch and select the top plane, the camera changes so I look at the top plane but also rotates 180degrees. I really hate that the camera rotates 180 degrees because it causes me to always see the drawing upside down (and then change the camera... every time...)

Apr 28, 2006Whenever we use measure tool it will show the a dialog box with valves of x,y,z, delta X, delta Y & delta Z. I want to customize the same as per the attached image.
Customize this, dialog box will not disappear(modal) after entering into any other command so no need to remember the values of x,y....etc.

There is a feature in SolidWorks that let's them quickly display the overall extents; length, width, and height for quoting purposes. The tool creates a transparent box around the 3D model and displays these dimensions.

I want to measure the overall height of this object. This is just a simple object to show my problem. I want to use the ruler tool of Inventor 2013 to measure the height, but I cannot make it.
I click the bottom line of thy cylindrical part, then I want to click the top most point of the half sphere, but I cannot.
Inventor always highlights the whole half sphere so I cannot specify the second measurement point exactly.
Why I cannot measure what I want to? The only solution is that I put the object in front view an draw a sketch and measure the sketch. What for I have a measurement tool?
AutoCAD Inventor :: Project In The Measure Command

I have what seems like an odd, but needed request here. I have an engineer that is looking for a way to measure between two lines that are not co-planar, but he wants the measurement in a specific plane.
Basically he wants to be able to select a plane or line, then be able to select the second plane or line and have the tool automatically "project" it to the plane of the first selection and give the angle in that plane.
Ref the attached - the purple lines are in the XY plane, the blue line is not, but he wants to measure the angle from the X axis to that line but in the XY plane as seen by the green line that was manually projected to that plane.
Without having to manually create a sketch and project the entities that need to be measured (this example is an extremely simplistic one), how can this be done? Measurements in this way need to be done in numerous complex angles.
He's claiming Catia, Pro/E and of course, SW can all do this "project" within the measure tool. I figured if that's indeed the case, Inventor sure be able to.....JD, you're the resident expert on SW & Inventor....do you know what I'm referring to?
AutoCAD Inventor :: Measure Bent Rod Length?
Dec 27, 2011In an attempt to aid purchasine I have started adding a length and width parameter to our models. These parameters are converted to a purchase parameter either in square feet or per foot length depending on how the material is purchased. I would like the paramater to also automatically update if the part size is changed. I now come to a part made of a round shaft that is bent and am looking for a way to get an accurate length for it. The part is made with a sweep and the square corners are radisuesd in the sewwp. I could pull the three dimensions in the sketch and add them together to roughly appeoximate the length but that would not be quite accurate. As the number I come up with will also be used by fab to cut the rod before bending I would like it to be correct. Is there a way to generate an accurate length that can be saved as a parameter? In SWx I would create a datum axis in a sketch that could be used but I am not seeing how to do that here.

Dec 23, 2013I have Autodesk inventor standard NOT the pro version. I am a Revit professional in dire need of learning Inventor. My exact steps are as follows:
1. Open assembly
2. create component - (simple wheel(cylinder) with an off axis hole in the middle so I can see if it is rotating.)
3. create component- flat surface.
4. constrain the cylinder to the flat surface via a tangent constraint
5. constrain the cylinder to the front edge of the flat surface via a mate constraint.
6. go to motion tab in constraint's, click rotation-translation, type in 10in for distance.
7.wheel does not rotate on surface like a wheel should. There is no affect of the surface on the wheel rotation.
In other words I want to get the circumference of the wheel to rotate 360 degrees as it travels pi*diameter of flat surface.

This is what I did:
Created a dynamic simulation and imposed motion on a prismatic joint.Edit dof and Input Grapher before playing the simulation.Play the simulation.After playing simulation for first time, dof and Input Grapher are dimmed (grayed out) and can not be edited.

Aug 7, 2013We use a lot of #4 finish Stainless steel sheet.
I have automated the changing of the active renderstyle to "Polished Brushed" to approximate this, but usually orientation is important. For instance, the texture will be around tube, and on large sheets, we want to keep all the sections orientated one specific direction.
I'd like to be able to easily rotate the texture thru 90 degrees (and possibly, a user selectable angle).
I'd prefer not to have to manually select a face first, either.

Sep 21, 2012I´m trying to measure the base dimensions of simple geometric shapes. I started out with plates since they are easy to measure as long as they sit in 90°, 180° and 270° positions relative to the origin. Then Measure.ExtentsLength, Measure.ExtentsWidth and Measure.ExtentsHeight will give me the base dimensions of a plate.
However, if the plate sits abitrary relative to origin this will obviously fail, since Measure.Extents only measures in x,y,z
Is there any way how I get positions of the geometry that is in the part, like corners surfaces on the B-REP so I can calculate the dimensions properly for a plate. I´m not sure if this is possible with iLogic. I have a strong suspicion VB.net would be needed for this.
Another problem I have is that derived parts don´t get triggered to run a script when I change the geometry in the Multibody Part and the rule is set to run by any modelgeometry change.

Jun 21, 2012I'm just playing with a rotor head of a model helicopter (see picture). For proper initial alignment, all main parts shall be setup parallel against one-another. This can be done by aligning the length of the ball linkages.
But therefore I need to know the distance of the ball centers. How can I do that? (STEP file for testing with different Inventor versions is attached).

May 13, 2013What is the best way to measure angular displacement on a FEA simulation?
A simple example is described here: The screen shot shows a long rigid body (left) mounted on a bracket (far right). The legs of the bracket are fixed on the right. There is a down force on the left. The goal is to measure vertical displacement on the left. All of the vertical displacement comes from flexing at the bracket, so this can be considered an angular displacement.
Is there a way to measure this vertical displacement without the long rigid body or it's mesh elements?
Or is there a way to turn off the mesh elements on the rigid body? I want to eliminate the unnecessary FEA computations to speedup the simulations.
