Xara :: Sepia Treatment For Photo
Mar 11, 2011
A process to turn a color photo into a sepia tone? Just dropping a dark color on the photo doesn't seem to work very well because it just masks the detail.
I've attached the photo, I am working with.

Putting aside the fact that you really can't see stars at sunset, and that if Polaris ever shows up near a setting sun, it's the End Of The World -- it's equally easy to add the stars to a nighttime photo..Next. Am trying to build a collection of photo-editing tips on the Xara-Users forum -- [removed link -link broken and or requires membership to view]
Xara's a LOT easier to use than Photoshop. But it is different. I know Xara's really for vector artwork, but when you end up using it more and more for photo editing, it's useful to have a bunch of techniques in one place.

I work with textiles and have to deal with fabric texture and wrinkles in Photoshop. The workflow involves applying a guggasin blur, grain and motion blur. This produces an acceptable result which is not realistic. Sometimes I use the mezzotine filter to reintroduce the fabric texture lost during the blurring. additional recommendations to deal with fabric wrinkles?

I have 3 images which I am looking for the best treatment.
a) Dark hair: the woman has an dark hair which is almost blended with the background. What to do to bring more definition to hair and to “separate” it from background?
b) Face light: one side of the man face (and body) is with much brightness, blending with his white shirt yet. Is there any way do correct it?
c) Spot of light: in a slice of a landscape there is a spot with much clarity/brightness. I would prefer to bring more blue from the sky then light. On the other hand, maybe there is any way to take benefit of the light.

I have a Smart Collection with one of the parameters being "Treatment - is - black and white". It works fine but not when I have "Lightroom B&W presets - B&W Look 5" applied. When I apply this preset the image does not "get pulled" into the Smart Collection. It works fine with the other B&W presets. And when an image is in the Smart Collection - by applying one of the other B&W presets - and then apply B&W Look 5 the image disappears from the Collection. Win 7 64-bit - Lr5 (not 5.2).

Whenever I import photos now (LR4), they auto preset to black and white on 'Treatment' on the develop tab rather than 'Color'. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the program hoping to get rid of preferences but it continues to do so.

I need to model a diversion manhole in a storm sewer system. The diversion will take X cfs from the system and send it to a water quality treatment facility. After leaving the WQ facility, it will be returned to the storm sewer system at the next manhole downstream.
I tried in Hydraflow but it doesn't look like diversions are possible. Thought about modeling up to the diversion manhole and taking that data into some other program, and then coming back into a second Hydraflow model that handles the downstream bit.

How to accomplish a special corner treatment. I'm working with very large panoramic files, that frequently have portions of roof top or other obstruction in the corners. I'm looking to try an effect that is a page curl, but more exaggerated than the typical "Warp/Shadow" effect I've used. I would like the curl to be a cone shaped spiral. I am working with VERY high resolution files (very large), so I should have a lot of detail to use in the edge of the curl.

I'm working with the attached photo. As you can see (or rather, can't see) Jeanine's eyes are obscured by the glare on her glasses. I'm sadly finding little blips and blurbs such as this on all the outside shots because this event took place on an absolutely spectacular day (not that I'm complaining given the bizarre weather we've been having). It's just I could not see in the camera's display some of the problems. I even had a couple that are completely blurry though they looked fine on the display at the time.
What is the simplest way to quickly correct this? I have several similar shots of her but the glare is present in all of them. It's actually worse in a couple of them.

I'm going through tutorials and don't see exactly what I'm referring to, I have a photograph image of a flower that I took - now I want to make that flower look like a hand-drawn color pencil drawing. how to get this effect? I know how to use the shape editor tool to get the outline of the photo, but how to create the fills to look like shaded pencil/charcoal fill?

Now that I've learned to isolate part of a photo using the mat, when I exported what I cut out it was tiny. My original photo was thousands of pixels wide. It reduced the cut out area exported to about 200 x 300 pixels which was a tenth of the size. I read a recent post on importing at same size using the utilities menu and clicking the last bitmap option to import at same dpi, so I did that using another photo so the utilities menu would show, then closed that photo and imported my photo again. But when I exported it to jpg it was tiny again. I checked to see the option in the utilites menu was still set. Is there a limit to picture size? I like to work with large photos so they print well as giclees and photographs. why I can't import and export at the full size .Am I having a problem because the dpi of the original is 72 dpi?

I am completely unable to get a couple of the photos to resize to where they will print in an 8x10 (960x768) format. No matter what I do, they're either cut off or they're distorted. I know the problem is that the original jpg file from my camera is not exactly the right proportions but isn't there some way to correct that using DPX?
In the three above, the people on the ends are cut off when I order the prints, despite my edits and resize efforts. In this one, the print comes out distorted because the sides are squashed in when it is printed at the store.
