VideoStudio :: PAL To NTSC Contrast / Shimmering?
Feb 12, 2008
I recently bought a Sony DCR-HC96E (PAL) video camera. I also have an older Sony DCR-TRV330 (NTSC) which I have used for years.
I recently took some video of a field partially covered with snow. When that clip was convered from the original downloaded PAL Widescreen AVI format to MPEG format for inclusion on an NTSC DVD I noticed lots of "shimmering" or wavering in the high contrast diference boundries between snow patches and ground. Further examination shows that effect is also along other contrast boundries during a subsequent snow mobiling trip.
By contrast when I converted to MPEG for use in a PAL DVD I do NOT see this effect. And, I do not recall seeing this when I used to convert from NTSC AVI downloads to PAL for DVD's.

Looking at the differences of frames per second and vertical lines of NTSC and PAL I am wondering if video recorded in AVCHD NTSC can be successfully converted to PAL or will there be a noticable difference in picture height and speed?

I wish to only use PAL formats. Even though my original video files are always PAL the preset file formats default to NTSC. I have to use the Custom Format option every time. How can I get all the presets to default to PAL not NTSC?

Family DVD - Footage has been shot in the UK (PAL camera) and edited in X3 - everything at 25 fps. I've managed to render a new mpeg2 file of the completed work n NTSC (29.97 fps). All of this in X3. I can see it's 29.97 by looking at the Properties of the new file.
But how to get this file onto a DVD at 29.97? I've tried bringing the 'NTSC' file into MovieFactory SE but I can't then get the Project Settings to show NTSC - only PAL.
I've set the Disc Template Manager to NTSC but if I then look at the Project Settings it's at 25 fps and I can't change it. If I go back to the Template Manager it's showing PAL again!!! I'm sure I didn't have any of this trouble in X2!!
So how can I burn a good quality DVD in NTSC format from my PAL project?

I usually produce simple slideshows on DVD from jpg files. These have always been PAL for use here in the UK. I now need to produce a version of one to send to people in the United States.
I can always test mine on my own DVD player/TV but I won't be able to test these and don't want an embarrassment of a Christmas present that doesn't work. Is it the case that I only need to change PAL to NTSC in the Project Properties, burn the DVD and everything will work?

I am in the UK and have been asked to transfer a NTSC video tape to a PAL DVD. I can do this easily as I have a NTSC video and converter, and have done this many times, but they also want a DVD to send to the USA in NTSC format. I was going to play the tape a second time without the converter but Is it as easy as just changing the setting in Videostudio 10 from PAL to NTSC or do I have to change anything else.

I have been a user of previous versions of VS...but my last version was VS12 because I didn't like version 3 or 4. Finally I am trying Pro X5 on a trial. I completed a project in Pro X5 but now I want to save it out to my computer. The problem is that when I want to save it I am missing my compression options. My standard procedure was to go --> Share --> Save File --> Custom --> Options --> Compression and I could choose from 8 different Media Types...Now, in Pro X5 I only get 2 compression types...NTSC and PAL..
Here are some screenshots...
Version 12:
Version X5:
I have them both currently installed at the moment. Obviously, only running one at a time

I have created and burnt a video and find that after burning it plays fine on a computer but not on television. Opening the video in Pro X3 and checking the Properties I find that it is in NTSC profile. Obviously not a lot of use in the UK. The television tells me that the DVD is an incorrect DVD, which I would expect if it's burnt for viewing on a computer or in NTSC format.
How can I change this to PAL DVD? When saved it is saved in Corel VS, which I would expect. When I go into the Library to obtain the video there appears nowhere where I can change it to PAL.

I am trying to install a (boxed) version of VideoStudio X5 Ultimate as a fresh install. However, although I select either United Kingdom or PAL/SECAM as the TV standard, it installs with the NTSC settings as default.
I have used the VSX5_cleaner to ensure everything is removed, rebooted and re-run the installer but it seems to install the same every time.
We have two laptops (identical configuration) and it works perfectly on the first one.
I am installing logged in as the local administrator.
I can't just use the current settings as it is trying to download video from a Sony HVR-HD1000E camera at 30fps that has been recorded at 25fps...

I have Corel Video Studio Pro X3
I live in Europe so that's PAL. But I also want to make DVD's for my family in the USA, and that is NTSC. I know I can choose to burn a DVD in PAL or NTSC at the DVD factory.
What I do NOT understand is: When I want to edit my video files I can choose for PAL or NTSC at Settings>Preferences>edit color filter. What does this setting do?
Also when I check Project Properties it always says PAL, even when I choose NTSC at Settings>Preferences>edit color filter. How I can edit video files and then burn DVD's in Pal & NTSC format without having to make separate editing for both formats.

The Time Configuration dialogue isn't remembering when I set 'Custom' to 30. If I close and reopen the dialogue after setting 'Custom' to 30, it reverts to NTSC. If I set it to 3 or 4, for example, it sticks. Why is setting it to 30 reverting to NTSC when NTSC is NOT 30 fps?

What is the effect or process to, for example, ensure that normally washed out bright background on, say, a sunny beach, has same depth and contrast as the darker subject in the foreground? It is an unnatural state since your eye and most cameras will adjust to one extreme or the other.

I am creating titles for a 720 PAL video (25fps) for the first time. Photoshop only has a default of NTSC 29.97 and no option for 720 PAL 25fps. How do I change this? I'm running Photoshop CS5 extended.

what is the best method for adjusting brightness and contrast in CS6? Is it by simply adjusting the Brightness / Contrast properties in an Adjustment Layer or is there a better way of going about it?

Quick question: If I am creating a black line drawing with a brush, how can I ensure that I will be able to alter the contrast later on? Sometimes it seems to work, other times not at all (i.e. if I open the histogram, it shows just one line all the way to the left; the lack of colour suddenly becomes an issue).
I like to use a soft, slightly opaque brush at first - which with the tablet gives it a nice range of pressure, but then usually I need to up the contrast at a later point.
I'm using PS CS6.

when I use Brightness/Contrast it will give me an eye dropper tool?
How do I get my Brightness/Contrast working again? I've reset my pallet locations and even re-installed the software.

When I'm using the pen tool in Photoshop CS4, it sometimes takes the color of what I'm using the pen tool on, ie; if I'm working with a picture with a bright green or pink, the path is bright green or pink (see link below) The picture isn't the worst that it does, but if I took a screenshot when it's at it's worst, you wouldn't see anything. I went through all the preferences and saw nothing. I do have the OpenGL acceleration turned on.

It's a small issue, but one that was a no brainer in CS5 - I use Legacy Brightness Contrast about 80 times a day, and CS6 no longer keeps it ticked, I have to manually enable it every single time, and by about the 57th time of having to do this every day, it becomes a more than a little irritating. As some of you will remember, CS5 just kept it ticked once you selected it.
The new brightness / contrast is great for certain tasks, not so great for others. I, and I'm sure many others rely on the legacy version.

I edit a photograph from a Camera Raw file to high contrast, grainy black and white, then when I try to flatten it or save it, it washes all the contrast out completely. When I try to merge layers, flatten image or cmd+opt+e/cmd+opt+shift+e to a new file it does the same thing. Here's what I've tried to correct the issue:
-I've tried saving it as a PSD file, a TIFF, a JPEG and a BMP file
-I've tried calibrating my monitor (X-Rite i1 Pro)
-I've tried soft proofing on and off (left off for now)
-I've tried resetting my colour settings to import files into the working space as ProPhoto & Adobe RGB 1998
-I've tried setting the import as the calibrated settings for the screen rather than ProPhoto or Adobe RGB 1998
-I've checked that all files (apart from a Dodge/Burn Layer which has to be on Soft Light never affected any files before) were set to normal
-I've tried converting profiles from ProPhoto to Adobe 1998, Adobe 1998 to sRGB
-I've tried going to preferences in User>Me>Library>Preferences>Adobe Photoshop CS6 Settings and manually resetting all relevant references
-I've tried flushing and resetting all preferences
-I've tried to uninstall and install Photoshop SC6 from scratch
-I've tried restarting the image from the raw file with the new install of CS6, done all the edits again manually...
And it still does the same thing. Whenever I have adjustment layers on my file and have some contrast added that I want to save, it flattens the whole image out..The last attachment is what it looks like in photoshop and another with my colour settings for the (calibrated) screen
