VideoStudio :: Choppy Preview Playback?
Aug 24, 2011
I just started using the new x4 version of VS and I noticed the playback on the preview window is very choppy. I have Pinnacle Studio HD, Sony Vegas Pro & of course Premiere CS5 installed to compare between them all, and don't have that problem, even with effects or anything added. Is there an option somewhere I'm missing? I've tried different video types and it doesn't seem to matter. The main one I'm trying is a 1280x720 AVI file I recorded.
Checked and unchecked the "Hardware Acceleration" ticks, no difference either way.
Checked DirectX....up to date.
Checked graphics drivers...up to date.

Though I am a long time CorelDraw user I've recently download VideoStudio Pro trial. The problem I am having is importing a sequence of animation images (360 total at 30frames/sec) The images where render and exported from Lightwave3D (jpg)
The only way I found to import the images was through the capture button and that worked fine. Once that was done imported VS editor and exported to several formats...
the problem is the sequence is choppy and not smooth it is a wee bit choppy the 30 frames/sec imports fine but the final play back is not smooth as it should be. If I export directly to video from Lightwave the playback is smooth. I'd render direct from LW but LW is is a wee bit wonky at time when writing direct to video format. LW prefers direct to image then you would composite in a 3rd party program
I tried VS video at 60 frames, 15 frames that made no difference at all the same unsmooth playback
How do I import a sequence of images at 30/sec so then export so that the playback is smooth.

Im having trouble with my viewport once my material editor is open. If I try to play my animation once my material editor is up it plays very very choppy. It didn't before I open the material editor. Its happening with all my scenes and I don't have any animated maps or very high res maps in the scene. Most of my scenes are very simple and still getting choppy viewport playback. If I close down the Material editor I still get the same performance when I play my animation. The only thing that I have be able to do to fix this is restarting max. Once I restart max it will work fine as longs as i don't open the material editor up. I have a top of the line machine from HP so i don't know what is going on.

A few months back, I spent a bucket of gold on upgrading to a new high end computer.
The specs:
Windows 8.1
i7-4770k 3.50GHz
32gb RAM
GeForce GTX 780
SSD Harddrive as main
2 extra harddrives
None of them are in RAID though.
But here's my problem. In the beginning, editing in After Effects CC and Premiere CC was smooth as butter. However, lately, especially Premiere has started giving me issues.
At the moment, I'm editing to 1080p footage, in h.264 format. There's a few effects on it, such as an overlay 720p footage, using Red Giant Looks twice (on one adjustment layer, and on the footage itself), and some other minor stuff like curves and such.
The effects don't seem to matter much though. Even if I play back the footage with no effects at all, playback is still choppy.
I have playback set to 25% size, and 1/4 resolution, and I still only get what I would guess is around 5-10 frames per second. Sometimes it drops completely, down to just 1 or 2 frames per second. Heck, at times it just doesn't update at all for a few seconds.
When I check my CPU usage, everything is fine. It hasn't reached max at all. RAM is still PLENTY (usually around 20gb left), and it seems that both harddrives (Premiere is running on the SSD and the files used are on another harddrive) aren't maxed out either in capacity.
This isn't JUST Premiere, as I said, I've seen a decline in After Effects performance as well.
I've attached 3 screenshots, of my CPU usages, and the 2 harddrives, showing a few minutes playback in Premiere.
CPU Usage:
SSD drive:
Secondary drive:
As you can see, apart from a few spikes here and there, none of them seem to be having issues with capping out. RAM is sitting at a steady 30% usage.

I'm new to Premiere Pro CS6,I thought I had a pretty powerful computer all things considered. Basically, what's happening is the moment I put any sort of basic video effects on a clip, (e.g. "brightness & contrast" or "fast color corrector") the video playback (but not the audio) becomes extremely choppy and laggy. Playback and overall performance are excellent before I put effects on. It's just the moment I put some on it slows down tremendously.

"After Effects error: RAM Preview needs 2 or more frames to playback."And I have searched this entire forum about a solution but nothing worked.I have been in Preferences-> Memory & Multiprocessing and adjustet the settings.
I have tried PURGE all memory. Uninstalled After Effects CS6. Installed again with update 11.0.3.6 .....and still the problem occurs? I have fought with this error since I installed After Effects CS6. As you can see my computer have enough RAM and CPU power.

The audio sounds choppy and I cannot figure out why Im getting it. I'm experimenting with Corel VS to learn how to use it. IF I use audio files ripped from a CD I get choppy audio after the project is rendered to a wmv hd 1080p file. It sounds fine during the preview playback in the project though.
Music that I have downloaded from the web does not do this. I assume I am doing something wrong when extracting audio from disks? I am just using Windows Media Player to RIP the CD's with. Should I use something else?

This issue started out of nowhere for what I consider to be no reason. Working on average sized 720p compositions with modest animations.
I am running fresh comps in AE CC with absolutely no plugins, freshly purged memory, cleaned cache, restarted comp, no other applications running on computer and 13 gb of memory allocated to AE... etc.

I'm using VS x5.
Basically, I have a Sanyo HD camera which I've used to capture quite a bit of holiday footage. I've edited some together but when I output the project to either mp4 or mts the picture is choppy when panning.
The camera was set to 1080p @ 30fps (there's no option of 25fps even though the camera was bought here in the UK) which I have matched by choosing the "Custom" option when creating the movie. I've matched the bitrate (16789bps on the source) but this ends up being 15540bps on the output file. (??) According to the properties on the source file it's 29.97fps which I have also matched in the Custom settings option.
I understand I should expect dropped frames if I was trying to output the file as PAL compliant, but I've got VS set to NTSC so I don't think this is an issue.
The source file is mp4 and looks fine when viewing the panning scenes.
PC Spec:
Intel quad core 2.4Ghz
4Gb RAM
ATI Radeon 5430 Graphics card
2TB SATA HDD
Windows Ultimate x64

I am capturing from my Panasonic digital camera through firewire cable/port to my Windows XP PC.
It used to work properly and for the past few months it is giving problem and I left it from there.

Against my better judgment I let the latest update install on Video Studio Pro X3 (now at 13.6.2.69) and now all my videos are skipping. This is happening in the time-line with camcorder and other source videos, and worse, when produced as output videos from VS is then in those permanently. The source videos are fine because I checked in Media Player. VS produced videos played in Media Player show the skipping - ugh. Prior to the upgrade everything was perfect. how do i downgrade?

The videos were from Fuji X100, Nikon D7000, Sony NEX-7. No matter how many different phrases I google, I could not find any info on this issue. This is a bug that needs to be fixed ASAP unless Adobe is giving up on video in LR.

I’ve been using very happily been using x2 for a number of years to make a lot of movies from my standard definition camera, I’ve loved the programme, and it has generally been able to do everything I wanted, and made for an enjoyable editing process. However, the camera has finally given up and I’m now going down the HD route, and the old x2 version just keeps crashing with any new clips. So I have recently downloaded the trial version of x5 (5 days of trial left), with the intention of trying it out and then purchasing it.
Unfortunately however I have found it to be jerky and jumpy when editing clips together, particularly when using the overlay tracks, the more overlays the worse it gets. This happens when I want to watch the edit, and while the sound runs ok the video just freezes on a frame then jumps ahead a few seconds and freezes etc etc. Impossible to watch and edit to really.
I am using the smart proxy to get the files to a manageable size, and I can see the separate proxy files in explorer. Smart proxy enabled. I have all the acceleration on that can go on (the ”Enable Hardware Encoder Acceleration” is greyed out so I can’t tick it). When I share/render the movie it comes out just fine, so it’s only with the editing process that is jumpy. I have really enjoyed x2, and could get good results really quickly, and I enjoyed the editing interface and process with Corel VS, but am now thinking I might need to change to a different video editing programme.
Computer- HP Elitebook 8560w

I'm running into a problem whenever I use multi frame rendering in the ram preview. If the machine is rendering and I don't have After Effects as the active application or whenever I stop playback of the ram preview, the cached frames are immediately deleted. I can see the green line moving forward as the image is rendered, but the second I stop the preview (or if AE is rendering in the background and I don't click back to it in time for it to begin playback) then the frames are gone and the green line disappears and I cannot scrub through the rendered frames.
If I disable multi frame rendering, then the green line and the cached frames remain in the preview window, and I can scrub through them like normal; they do not clear. Only when multi frame rendering is enabled does it disappear after render.
I know the frames are saving, because I have 32 GB set on my SSD for the disk cache (I also put them on an external HDD to test with the same results). It will fill up that 32GB of space presumably with the cached frames that disappear after render, but they are not accessible. I also have 16GB of ram, with plenty free for AE to use for caching (3GB per core = 12GB set for AE ram preview). I have not had this problem of the frames clearing until AE CC.
The only thing I can think that would be different from other times when I've not had this problem is that I'm using ProRes 422 (LT) clips in the compositions. But I don't know why they would cache normally without multiframe and then be immediately deleted with it enabled.
And no, rendering without multiframe is not an option. RAM previews take four times as long with single frame rendering, and I don't want to sit at my computer all day waiting for previews. This is extremely frusterating, as I must have AE open as the foremost program at all times. If I miss that crucial moment where the render completes and click back to the program a second late, all the frames are gone and I must rerender again! It happened twice while writing this message.
So what's the deal?
Specs:
AE CC 12.0.0.404
Retina Macbook Pro / OSX 10.8.5
2.6Ghz Core i7
16GB RAM
512 GB primary SSD (where footage & cache is located)
3TB 7200rpm cache drive

I downloaded the trial version of VideoStudio 4 Pro to try it out and I like the interface and the ease of use. My problem is that when I capture MPEG 4 files in the timeline and go to replay them, the sound and video are very choppy and the replay skips the whole way through.
I converted the MPEG 4 files to wmv, and the video was smooth but I lost some of the image clarity in the converting process. I don't think it's my computer because the MPEG 4 files play nicely on MediaPlayer - just not on VideoStudio.

I've uploaded MPEGs from Panasonic DMC-TZ7 on HD quality. Audio works fine when playing clips and when played on Quicktime. When playing back on Project, I get a chopped pulsing noise on some parts (although they play OK as clips). I used simple fade to black transitions and trimmed clips. When I finish project, the sound was OK on the first clip but I get no sound or the odd pulse of sound on subsequent clips.
I have re-installed VS pro X3 and downloaded the latest patches but it makes no difference.

I recently transferred collection of Super8 movies from a VHS tape and burned to a DVD. Upon playback on the computer, as well as preview prior to burning, the audio on the clips worked fine. However when the disc was played on the DVD player ( tried my blu-ray player as well), there was only audio in sections where I had added an audio track. Did I miss something ?

I am playing a section of a project in Timeline view. The section is marked by the Trim Markers. Starts fine but then pauses/stops when it reaches the end of the accompanying music (an mp3) rather than at the second Trim Marker. Theses two points are different because the video fades to black as the music finishes. The video should continue to run for 2 or 3 seconds more with a black screen.
I've noticed that if I select the Sound Mixer and then play the section between the Trim Markers it works fine i.e. plays up to the second Trim Marker.
Also, it seems that if I create a video of the selected part of the project this works fine too.
I just seem to be getting the problem in Timeline view when I have black video that runs after an mp3. I have checked multiple projects where I have the same effect (fade to black as music ends) and I am getting exactly the same problem. As the sound stops, so does the playback.
Background is that I am new to X3 and struggling. I had problems authoring in X3 so used X2,. Then had a problem with X2 so re-installed. Then found this problem when editing again in X3 so reinstalled X3!

I have been experiencing an error message from Windows Media Player when attempting to skip ahead (fast forward) with MPEG-4 HD files that I am creating with VideoStudio Pro X5. After the new MP4 HD file is first created (this can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 3 hours depending on the length of the clip, which are between 15 and 40 minutes), I open the file to view it in Windows Media Player. It starts playing normally with no problems, but as soon as I click to skip ahead on the timeline bar, an error message displays stating "Windows Media Player encountered a problem while playing the file". In the last 10 attempts or so I have only been succesful in creating one MP4 HD file that allows skipping ahead... I am not doing anything differently (that I am aware of, at least) when I "get lucky" and manage to create a file that does not generate the error message, and after burning the last 9 hours on three more failed attempts I decided to check

I recently burned video footage to DVD with VS Pro X5 (with the parameters already set in the VS Pro Burning module), and played the DVD on my DVD player...the DVD played pretty well on my player, though some "striations" or moire appeared in the background on some building sidings early on--but it didn't distort the overall play-ability of a particular sequence...
However, when I played the DVD on a friend's DVD player, the beginning of the DVD broke up and "de-pixillated," for want of a better word--though 2/3rds of the DVD's later footage played OK (and a commercial DVD played just fine on my friend's DVD player just before all this)...
That result left me very puzzled, why it should play more-or-less OK on my own DVD player, but so horrendously on another DVD player...
Is there some VS Pro (or a utility program) filter that I can run the footage through prior to/during a DVD Burn in VS Pro to get a smooth rendering of the footage?
