Revit :: How To Align Nested Family To Reference Line In Host Family To Rotates Around A Certain Point

Jan 29, 2014

I'm trying to align a nested family to a reference line in my host family so that it rotates around a certain point.

I've created the reference line in my host family, locked the end point to two reference planes and then gave an angular parameter to the angle between the ref. line and the ref. plane.

I then inserted the nested family and aligned it to the ref. line. The problem is that when I flex the angle, i get a "Constraints not satisfied" error..

What could be wrong?

I'm using a generic face based family for both host and nested families...

Revit :: Nested Family Reference Plane Lock Breaking

Feb 11, 2014

I have developed a family-construction method that combines equipment with its dedicated electrical receptacles.  It is designed such that once inserted, the user can drag the outlet symbol and outlet to the right or left and also move the outlet symbol away from the wall plane to permit symbol stacking in plan.  Most of the time this works but on some families, though seeming constructed in the same manner, the link between the receptacle and the controlling plane gets broken.  The link to the outlet annotation family always stays connected.

I've attached a Revit project contain two families, one that works and one that does not.

Revit :: Wall Host Is Missing In Family

I am creating a fireplace family in Revit Architecture 2012 with wall host (Speciality equipment with Wall host).  I selected the template created the family, but in mean time i can't understand the wall is having delete option.(i.e it is released from host). I am surprised to see that in the family type, the wall host is missing.

Revit :: Can't Make Roof Host Family Cut?

Feb 4, 2013

I've made a few roof hosted families, and they've all been fine in the past. For some reason, with this one, when you load it into a project it appears to be one 'ref level' too high for the roof host, hence revit errors, displaying that it can't cut the roof void.

I assume this is something really simple I should (or not!) have done with the family when I started it, can it be saved?

Revit :: Voids To Cut Host Wall In Window Family

Feb 16, 2012

I would like to cut a void into the wall of a host window family. When I place a void in the family, it does not cut thought the wall.

I tried making the void on a plane perpendicular and parallel to the wall plane.  I dont know if this has anything to do with how voids work.  But its not working. I also dont have an 'opening' element in the window family.

Revit :: Visibility Of Sub-objects In Nested Family

Aug 13, 2012

I've created a family for an exterior canopy system that has many variations (see attachment).  It works for all options except the final request from the intended users.  When the canopy is very short, the interior outriggers do not need cable tiebacks to the exterior wall.

Currently, the outrigger family, which is nested and arrayed in the host family, is composed of multiple objects, four of which comprise the cable support that needs to be able to be turned off, and one that is the outrigger that is always visible.  I've tried several ways of getting the cable assembly to turn off while leaving the outrigger visible, but all without success.  I've tried editing the array and mapping the cable assembly components' visibility parameter to a Cable Option Yes/No parameter.  I've tried making the cable assembly its own family and nesting that first in the outrigger family and then mapping its arrayed instance to a Cable Option parameter.  I've tried various combinations of Instance versus type parameters in both the Outrigger and host Canopy families, all to no avail.

Given the way the family is now designed, can this be done or must the cable assembly be its own family and arrayed separately?  Note that there are parameters to control the cable assembly size.

Revit :: Using Nested Family To Create Material Link

Oct 24, 2011

I assigned my students to create lighting fixture family.  I wanted them to create a drop-down list of materials within the family to allow a user to select from the list of materials.  This is accomplished by using a nested family - the inserted family has the materials defined.  The drop-down list appears just fine in the properties, but we aren't able to apply it to the extrusion.  I have tried inserting each family type and using the Label parameter, but Revit won't allow the link.

Revit :: Referencing Nested Family Types In Catalog

Mar 5, 2014

I have built a family and added various types; I have then nested this into my final family and would like to change the nested family type dependant on the final family’s type. (Hope that makes sense). I can do all of this until I want to make a catalogue.

This is what I did:
-Made a family and added types.
-Made a new family.
-Bought in the 1st family.
-Selected the nested family and added a parameter called "Attachment".

This all works fine I can change the type of the nested family in the edit type dialog box. But I need to make a type catalogue and when I export the family types as a txt document the attachment parameter doesn’t appear. So how do I reference this?

I have attached the RFA & TXT files.

Revit :: Auto Nested Family Selection For Lintel Types?

Aug 10, 2013

In a window family, is it possible to call for a nested element to be determined automatically, and for that family to be schedulable ?

In my case, I have a window type, that is arrayed so that it can adapt to suit openings that can vary considerably in size.

I would like the lintel selection to be determined automatically by the size of the opening - selecting a specific lintel type from within a common type based on the overall span. The lintel in question will vary in it's specification, it is not merely a size.

ie. Windows
<1200mm - use Lintel Type A1 (100mm deep)
1200mm - 1800 use lintel Type A2 (215mm deep)
1800 - 2400mm use lintel Type A3
2400 - 3600mm use lintel Type A4
>3600mm use lintel Type B1 (different construction type altogether)

these should then be identified in the window schedule - identifying lintel type and length (length = window opening +150mm bearing at each end).

It may be quite a bit of work in getting this systme working, but we have a scheme with 250+ windows, and a further 3-4 buildings that will be using the exact same types - running to 1000+ windows in total. So to get this working would be a great time-saver.

Revit :: Unable To Move Reference Plans While Editing A Family

Jul 11, 2013

I'm creating a window family by modifying a pre-existing one.  One of the things I need to do is to move the reference planes defining the "left" and "right" edges of the window opening, so as to make to opening wider, but I'm not allowed to do it.  The reference planes always move together, so that I'm stuck with a 3'-0" wide opening no matter what I do.  I can't find any constraints linking the reference planes to each other or to a 3'-0" dimension - I can't find any constraints on them at all, in fact.

The file in question is attached.  As I mentioned, the reference planes I'm concerned about are called "left" and "right".  I have been able to move other reference planes in the file.

Revit :: Family Line Color Not Showing Up

Jan 18, 2013

The line color of my family is not showing up. It is just a symbol and it should be red, but it shows up black. I went to the overides in the project and nothing was overridden, so I went ahead and changed the imported families override to red just to see if it would change and it still didn't change. How do I fix this? When I open the family, the lines are red, just not in the project.

Revit :: Symbol Line Detailing In Family

Dec 31, 2013

how other people approach Revit (the joys of working as the solo Revit pioneer in the practice)I am in the middle of putting together various families - and have been experimenting with symbol lines for the detailing at reveals / heads etc.

For the moment I had simply used masked regions to create the joinery of frames, beads, architraves etc. which works fine, apart from not being able to use any fills at family level - leaving it to call-out drafting to add the detail in the project.

I tried the alternate of using Detail Components within the family (a simple rectangular joinery section) with shared parameters so that it can be driven by the host family - which allows drafting fills to be used.

It looks better and will save time placing fills later on to call-out details.

But - is there any impact on performance in doing this (every section now shows the fill when set at 'Fine') - is this a standard approach, or am I better leaving the symbol linework as hatch-free in the family itself - and leaving it all for addition in individual call-outs ?

Revit :: Line Based Family Automatically Joining

May 23, 2011

I have a line based generic model family I use for wall framing and for some reason separate instances of the family will automatically join together when the ends are within a few inches of eachother. How the heck do I turn that option off? Why would it automatically join in the first place? I have tried to unjoin geometry and it wont select the families.

It is acting like the way walls will autojoin but there are no options to disable this. It makes something that should be simple very tedious and annoying.

My Problem: Revit wont allow me to place a FamilyInstance of this family inside a (Architectural) project. When I click Architecture Tab->Component->Place a Component and select my Family I get a circle with a cross in it and are not able to place my family instance anywhere. Note this occurs in all levels/views from Site to Level 1, 2 etc.

why I can place it in a project?

Revit :: Family Instance Won't Extend To Full Length Of Line

Jan 22, 2014

I have made a Family that is based off the Metric Structural Framing - Beams and Braces template. When I import my Family into a project and create a instance of the Family (which is a channel) the channel doesn't extend the whole distance of the geometric line. Its always 1500mm long (thats the default length in the .rfa file). See below image for my problem:

I made my extrusion inside the Left Elevation view and not inside a Floor Plan view; simply because it is easier to create the complex geometry of it. Maybe this has affected its inability to stretch to the length of the line? How can I edit my family so that the extrusion will stretch the whole length of the line/beam?

Revit :: Create Parametric Seating Row With Generic Line Based Family

Nov 12, 2013

I am trying to create a parametric seating row with a Generic Line Based family.

If you check the file for the Length (default) parameter, I am multiplying it by the Arm Distance (600mm) so that the pattern repeats while I stretch out the line.

=Chairs * 600 mm

I want to add a parameter for the Arm Distance linked with the actual seat so that if I make the chair wider the pattern would adjust accordingly.

=Chairs * Arm Distance3

This way I could adjust the chair width and Line Based family all at once. However, I am finding that when I add "Arm Distance3" to the equation the Line Based feature stops working.
