Revit :: Raster Print Quality
Dec 5, 2012
I'm having issues with print quality on certain drawings, which is a shame as print quality generally exceeds that of AutoCAD Architecture.
The issue I have is with a SHADED and shadowed elevation drawing. When I go to print to PDF it insists line removal is done using raster rather than vector processing. This leads to a poor quality PDF both on screen and printed.
I accept that automatically generated shadows may make this necessary but with then turned off, I don't.
If I print a coloured plan, say a room or area drawing with automatically generated colours, it's quite happy to plot it using vector processing. I DO NOT see any difference between this and a shaded elevation without shadows! Any way of improving the look of raster processed output?

I have successfully draped an orthophoto over a DEM in Map3D but the resulting quality of the the image is so poor it is unusable. I have attached a couple screen shots of the 2D and resulting 3D images. Is the resolution in 3D dependent on the 'resolution' of the DEM? The orthophoto is 10cm resolution.
I have tried REGEN and to Resample Raster but I haven't had any luck.

we were working on some planning stuff, altogether more than 100ha in area. in Cad2006, I assembled 6 pieces of colored plans (jpg), each above 10 MB. I did this because scaling and aligning files this size in Photoshop is a real pain and inaccurate.. anyway, when I printed them to pdf (I did select for maximum quality in printing dialog), the lines in the image was a bit fuzzy when viewed for original size. the original ones are sharp as hell on the same scale. and I made sure I DID NOT print larger than the original. luckily the quality loss was not obvious for final use on the A1 poster. still, I wonder if anything can be done to output losslessly.

When reducing the size of an image layer, I am seeing very different quality between regular raster layers and smart object layers.
See this image for an example:
Both versions of the image were resized after duplicating the same source layer.
They were then resized to 20% of their original size.
In the top example, the layer was resized immediately after being duplicated.
In the bottom example the layer was converted to a smart object before resizing.
You will notice that the top version of the image has considerably more artifacting than the bottom.
The quality of the raster layer size reduction also seems to have degraded since CS5.
I am using the bicubic setting in Preferences > General > Image Interpolation.
Switching that option around has made very little difference.
Are others seeing the same phenomenon?

I am using two different types of raster ECW and MrSid. ECW file resolution goes way down when plotting. They look like blocks. MrSid files look fuzzy but alot better than ECWs. I've tried RASTERTHRESHOLD, and RASTERPERCENT. Both are set to 90. Using HP6100ps.
Images are fine when using Imageinsert.
Is there a setting i'm missing somewhere for them?

A DWG can be plotted to a "vector" PDF using DWG to PDF. Is there any way to plot, convert or save a DWG to a "raster" PDF?

I am facing the following problem in Autocad 2012:
I have set all the drawings I want to print in the Sheet Set Manager and I publish everything to plotter for unattended plotting. However, when publishing the same drawings to PDF using the SSM, all raster images do no print. If I open each drawing and plot the same layout on its own, everything prints just fine. So I think there is something wrong when publishing through the SSM.
The funny thing is that before using Autocad 2012 I was using version 2010 and everything worked as expected, the raster images were printed no matter where I was printing from.

I use a raster image (JPG) on my title block for the Company Logo. This all worked fine in Revit 2009. Since I installed 2010 the logo no longer prints. I have tried other images and even converted it to a TIF.
It does not seem to be linked to any one printer. I have tried plotting on a HP Plotter, HP Laser Jet, Sharp Printer/ Copier, and even to a PDF. All have the same result. No Logo.

I have problem with AutoCAD DWG to PDF printer. When I use a vector drawing with a raster map attached and print the layout with the DWG to PDF printer, all the vector elements looks perfect in the output pdf file, but the raster image is almost unreadable. It doesn't work if I increase print resolution and it looks if there would be some kind of default jpeg compression inside this printer but there aren't any settings to control it or simply turn it off. After plotting such a drawing on the HP plotter it is so awful that there is no use of such a file.

When I Print from AutoCAD 2000i (Windows XP, 2GHz, 2GB Ram) to a Canon IP6000 and an HP9800
I get evenly spaced white stripes in raster images (inserted via insert or ole) Vector lines and text appear just fine on top of the image. I've tried changing the spooler location and image quality to no avail. I have attached a scan of the output I am getting.

I am using imported Raster images in Revit Architecture 2010 to trace and I need to make them unselectable. I know that I can 'Pin' them so I cannot move them, but I need to keep from actually selecting them. I thought I could use Design Options, but Raster images cannot be moved from the Main Model and thus remain selectable.

I do not see a way to control visiblilty of a raster image (jpeg) in a family (titleblock) that is in a project. I want the ability to turn off a stamp before plotting. R-2012. Raster images in model categories did not work. Adding a parameter in the titleblock family under 'Lock Proportions' did not work. (Other elements that use these same parameters to turn on/off visibilty were available there.)

Still trying to set up revit standards can't come to conclusion regarding plotting vector or raster. My personal (limited) experience raster plotting has been poor quality with vector the plots are cleaner and it seems I have better control of shaded areas.

how is the import scale for a raster image determined?
I've different scanned sketches of floor plans drawn by hand to specific scales, the resize tool is not quite accurate enough for my use. Does the view scale have anything to do with it?

I'm redoing some old projects in Revit, and I'm using a background image to vastly facilitate the process as the projects are almost perfectly drawn, I'd like however, to use a background image as reference and keep the underlay (e.g.: show the bg image for level 2 and over it show the level 1 underlay) but I couldn't find a way to do that.

I open an image in Photoshop CS3 and do a file / print to my HP laserjet 1300 black an white printer. The image prints out with a halftone pattern with little dots visible all over the place.
If I place the same image without any changes into Illustrator and do a file / print form there, the image comes out looking like a black and white photograph with none of the dots / halftone pattern of the photoshop image.
I want it to look like a photograph. I do not want the halftone / dots.
Maybe just some photoshop setting that I need in order to print nice looking images from Photoshop CS3 to this printer rather than having to get Illustrator involved?

I have 300dpi color images. Some have cloud with blue sky in them. When I look at them on the monitor they look fine. But, when printed on a color laser printer the sky has a somewhat orange cast. What can I do to fix this, if anything, and get the color laser print as accurate a reproduction of the digital image as possible?

A website has done a feature article on our company and I would LOVE to print out a copy of this page. Using the standard browser print options makes the page a total mess.. I've downloaded the "Awesome Screenshot" plug in for chrome and got a decent print of it but it's still not ultra high quality.

When I convert a DWG file into a PDF file I end up losing image quality on the PDF. The PDF file produced is not of the same quality that is on screen of the AutoCAD.
The difference is also very noticeable when printing the two files. On a hardcopy of both files, the printed PDF file is of noticeably lesser quality than the printed DWG file.
Lines become jagged and there are subtle breaks in the PDF compared to the DWG.

I have been told that when sending my JPEGS to my PRO lab that I can save them with a JPEG image quality of 10 instead of the maximum of 12. They say that there is no difference in the 10 versus the 12 in print quality. Is this true or are they just telling me this to save capacity and space on their server? The bulk of my print sizes are in the range from 4x6 to 8x10. Why are there 12 quality options to choose from? What are the differences from low, medium, high and maximum?

Any way to improve a photo in GIMP so that it can be printed in larger formats? Enlarging seems to be okay, adding a black bg and setting layer mode to overlay also seems to have worked, but as I am aiming at selling my photos, I want to be 100% sure I deliver a good enough product!

I understand GIMP may not be the best program to use to create business cards but as a start-up I need a cheap/free program!! Anyway I have designed the cards and am having them professionally printed but when I did a test print on my home computer, the quality seems very poor. Mainly the text is blurry. It looks fine on my screen though.

I'm starting to work with big format photos much more these days. I'm designing albums which will contain a few pics per spread. When designing the pages sometimes i need to CTRL+T (shrink or enlarge) the images. So the question is, do these images lose (print) quality with all the CTRL + T?
BTW i never decrease the resolution, image size.

I'm making an ad with alot of bright colors. It's gonna be printed to a glossy photo paper for distribution, but I'm having a hard time getting the monitor colors to match the printout colors.
I started as RGB workspace, then once finished I converted to CMYK, but the colors drastically get dull.
I know that it is normal for colors to change during RGB to CMYK transition, but is there any way I can preserve those bright colors?.. (it's mostly bright orange and green.)
Workspace specs :
RGB : ADOBE RGB 1998
CMYK : SWOP V2 20%
Conversion : ACE
Intent : Relative colormetric.

I'm trying to assemble a figure for a publication in a journal. one of the images has been created by the person who generated the data using MS paint.the files he has sent so far have not had resolution above 96 dpi, saved as a png. I need better res files to send to the publisher, I'm hoping we can save it out such that it will be 600dpi?
I'm laying out the final figure in photoshop, and have created a high resolution document in which to import this image from paint with some other images. however, when i check the res on the files that he's given me so far, it's screen res.
