Photoshop :: Crop Tool Only Allows Square Images

Mar 27, 2008

When I try to crop an image using photoshop the crop tool will only allow a square image, it will not let me have one side longer than the other. I've tried to just use the tool once the box is highlighted to adjust the position of one or more sides but it will only allow me to do this at the corners, once again resulting in a square even though it is a rectangle I want.

Photoshop :: How To Crop To Set Proportion And Not Shrink Image

Jul 8, 2011

I am currently putting together a book of my thesis and need to re-crop many of the images that I've used and taken. The problem is that I would like to crop the images to a set proportion of the golden ratio, golden mean, divine whatever- all the same thing, basically a ratio of 1:1.618 (roughly).

I used to do this with no issue (I think) a few Photoshop versions back (maybe back towards CS2 or something, but as things have drastically changed (now running CS5.5) I am a little stuck. Whenever I select the crop tool, I try and input a fixed width and height of 1.618:1 or vice-versa depending on the image orientation- and leave the resolution blank. A long time ago, I seem to remember cropping the image with the tool and it was a fixed ratio as it is now, only before, the image did not drop from say 11x14 to 1x1.618 and blow up in resolution size. It maintained the image size and resolution and cut the excess off the smaller length generally.

I am NOT looking for that rule of thirds crop but a simple means to crop many images at one ratio. I know there is that script called the golden proportion or something however that does not crop to the right ratio that I am looking for. It mimics the existing photo's ratio which often times is off. The other reason I wanted to go through a certain proportion ratio as I did before is many of my images are of different base sizes and so I don't want to manually calculate this out dozens of times.

Does a simple (non-photo-destructive) solution to crop an image of any size to the 1:1.618 ratio, and maintain the resolution etc? By non photo-destructive I mean to not do the crop as I have been doing, then manually going into the image size and rescaling the image through shrinking the new resolution and then re-scaling the image.

Photoshop :: Crop Tool Prior To CS6 Vs Perspective Crop Tool

Feb 26, 2013

In the old days, one could just use the crop tool and, while drawing crop lines, check the perspective box if you found that you needed to change the perspective. With CS6 if you start with the crop tool, and find you want to change the perspective, you have to change tools to the new perspective crop tool. In the process, you have to tell the newly opened dialog box that you don't want to crop, to get to the perspective tool, which now has reset to its defaults. You've lost your cropping and you have to start over.

It would be a bonus if modifying the marking menus for specific keys, was as easy for the ones surrounding the hotbox.

But the issue is when you select the crop tool and enter a custom constraint and crop

The image size is sometimes a full 2 inches off of what you set as a crop?! I havn't run into this before

[I do know you can use the drop down box and use {size and resolution} but I want to know why it doesnt work under custom and unconstrained]

Photoshop :: Crop Tool Re-crop By "ratio"

Jan 22, 2008

I've been using the crop tool without any knowledge of the little boxes you can fill in to restrict its WxH dimensions. I always wanted my crops to come out at a 2:3 ratio and could never get them perfect since I was just eyeballing it.

So then I found the WxH controls and if I put "2 in" for width and "3 in" for height, my image will come out as desired, no scaling of the image, but with the unfortunate side effect that my DPI has been changed, which causes problems for me later on. Now if I put "2 in" x "3 in" and then specify 72dpi in the "resolution" field, it will actually scale my image which is not what I want either. Now if I put "2 px" by "3 px" of course it will massively scale my image, which again is not what I want.

What I want is to re-crop my image to a 2:3 ratio, WITHOUT scaling, AND without modifying DPI. Is this possible with the crop tool? It seems that my WxH numbers are required to have units after them and I don't want any of those units (inches, px, mm, etc). I want unitless cropping, basically cropping by ratio. Does this make any sense?

I have a work-around which involves batch resetting all my DPI's at the end of the session. But that adds another step to my workflow which is not a very elegant solution.
