Aug 10, 2004I am a game coder/artist using 3ds Max. To date, I have used very simplistic methods of making character skins. I need to step it up a notch and start making more realistic (human) skin textures for humans models in this game I'm working on.
I have been searching the web for several days on this topic and finding little luck. Here are the problems I am encountering:
1. Most skin tutorials for cgi I've found are for high-res, pre-rendered images in Max or Maya ,and not for games. They use several shaders and bump maps and complex multi-texturing that I cannot use in a game.
2. I found one fairly decent skin making tutorial but it used a clouds effect that really only works for light-skinned characters. I tried to modify for darker skin characters and it looks really bad.
3. In general, I have not found much for this at all on the web.

Nov 20, 2012I occasionally use GIMP to burn-down parts of portraits that compete with the face. For example, bare shoulder, midriff over-light, hands over-lit.
The skin ends up looking greyish, not like less-lit skin. It works not too badly visually, as the emphasis is on the face, but fails on inspection.
I have tried the burn tool and just plain old Brightness, both on a selected area.

Nov 5, 2012For my 3D scene, I have to use a texture file on the floor. If I use the only file, than it looks really boring and below par. What I want is, I want to generate some (around 6-8) texture files within the original texture file - so the colors of all the texture files remain same but only the texture varies.Likewise there are more than 500 texture files and I just can't do them manually. Is there any way out to do this in Photoshop?

Photoshop :: Emboss Always Comes Out Silver?
Aug 7, 2009I'm trying to make some book covers and get a decent emboss effect. I'm only using Photoshop Elements 7 but it does have an Emboss facility in the Stylise part of the Filters menu.
The problem is that whatever I do the embossing always comes out in white/silver when I'm trying to get black. Why the hell is that and why can't it be changed? Does anyone know how?

Oct 9, 2012I'm having problems with Silver Efex Pro 2 after upgrading to PS CS6, worked fine in older versions of PS..Downloaded the latest installer from Nik Software..The installer only find my Lightroom 4.1 when installing, and I have to add CS6 manually (locating the plugin folder, also tried other folders).It works fine in LR4.1, but in PS, the software opens, I apply changes, and clik OK, NIK closes, but nothing happens to my image. The history tab says "Silver Efex Pro 2", but no layers/changes to the original image..64bits WIN7 Enterprise, 12GB ram

Mar 20, 2013I have had a problem with the Nik Software Silver Efex Pro (SEP) plugin running extremely slowly, but only at certain times. It's been pretty good for the past few months, but it suddenly took a nose-dive a few days ago. It takes ages to load the presets and to process the image in Photoshop once I have made my selections in SEP. I just thought that as SEP is a direct plugin to CS6 Photoshop then perhaps it's something to do with the way Photoshop itself runs. I switched the running of Photoshop to 'Run as administrator' (just right click the program in the start menu and go to compatibility tab) and SEP now runs extremely fast. why running as Admin should make such a difference? Are there any problems in running in Admin mode?
I run Norton Internet Security, and thought that as I'm now OK in Admin mode it might be a virus-checker problem, and running in Admin mode was getting around the problem. I do have both versions of Photoshop (32 and 64 bit) included to 'allow' access in Norton.Here is my system config. My PC runs very well in all other respects.

Oct 9, 2005on creating metallic text, chrome, brushed metal, etc., but I'm wondering if anyone has come across a way to create text that approximates a nice reflective look similar to when printers use foil stamping? Every now and then I'll see magazines and print work that have those beautiful reflective colors that catch the light in ways that really catch the eye, but I'm not sure if this can be recreated in Photoshop?
Another variation I'm interested in trying to create is text that looks like it has a metallic paint, similar to the way cars are painted, so that it's subtle, but you can see little flecks and dimension.

Jul 11, 2006I have been working at this for about 4 hours and I am still stuck. I am trying to create a padlock from scratch, and have had nothing but problems. Below is one I used as a reference. I created a block for the lock itself and used a gradient fill on it. I then added some filters (noise, blurr, etc.) and came up with a decent though clipart looking lock. I think with some more time I can come closer to the desired effect. My sticking point is on the metal arm. I have tried and tried to duplicate this metallic silver look, and it just looks horrible.

Mar 4, 2012I have a lava texture and a ground texture. I'd like to be able to make some cracks on the ground texture that would show through the lava texture below it. Something like a cracked mud look. I would be using this for a game I'm making form some terrain textures. Are there any plugins that would aid in making these transparent cracks and perhaps even add depth to the cracks?
I guess a spider web where the spider was on crack would be something I'm looking for. Similar to the following image:
