Photoshop :: Replace Contents Of A Layer With Higher Resolution Image
Jun 24, 2013
I can do it, but I was wondering if there is a better way.
Â
Large PS file (CS6 and CC) half a dozen texture layers using low res images. Several have blend modes, transparency and even masks. I now have the same images in high res. I want to replace just the image, but not lose my blend/transparency, or masks.
Â
Do I bring in the high res layer, copy the mask over etc? Then delete the original?

I realize the nature of my question maybe asking the impossible, but I have a low res image I downloaded from the internet, placed in an InDesign page, blew it up and printed it out. I was going for the distressed look that it has, it looks ok when I print it out considering it's low res and I blew it up fairly large. However, it's a little too pixelated to look professional when printed. Are they any tricks or things I can do to make it look higher res for print. I've attached the image as well as a screenshot of the InDesign file so you can see it in context.

I often make HDR images by exporting a bracket from lightroom into photoshop via right click>merge to HDR in photoshop. When the dialog comes up it is always a very low resolution preview. When I go to zoom in (cmd +) the resolution remains the same and I am zooming in on a pixelated image and the zoom is very limited.
I am working from D3s files so there is plenty of resolution but it just doesn't show up in the preview. Is this simply the way it works or is there a way I can get a higher resolution preview. I'm not worried about rendering times either as I'm on a 8 core with 16gb or ram.

Im printing this on an Epson Stylus CX4600. It supports 1440DPI Printing. Ive tried setting the resolution in photoshop to 1440 on the printer section (edit/preferences/units & rulers). Ive tried printing on photopaper, glossy photopaper, matte paper, and regular paper. Ive set the printer for best quality, normal quality and everything in between. But still everytime I print, it does not look as it does on the screen. It prints out fairly blurry, you cant read any text thats on it, except the top part, and thats even blurry.

My Dad recently upgraded his monitor from an old CRT on 1024x768 resolution to a new LCD with 1920x1080 resolution, and he's found that tools that require the use of the mouse are running particularly slowly now. He's using Photoshop on a Windows Vista 64-bit machine with 4GB RAM and around 3.5TB of storage space. Do you know why the sluggishness might be occurring?

What is the best format to save high resolution black and white photographic work? Tiff? JPEG? Also, I'm confused about the Tiff save dialog.
When saving as Tiff, there is a box I can check labeled "ICC Profile: Grey Gamma 2.2". What does this do?
Also, later I'm asked if I want LZW compression. I want as high resolution as possible, file size is not an issue. So I assume I'm not interested in compression.
But is Tiff the best format for me?

I have a project in which I am designing a website in Photoshop at 72 dpi. Everytime I bring in a photo be it an AI file, or jpeg or even tif that is much, larger than the 72 dpi .psd file I am working in, the image becomes blurry as I scale it down. Why is this and what then should I be doing to get my images crisp for a final file that will be used to slice out web assets during the build.

I have a large number of landscape images (golf course holes) that are 1600x1200 pixels and I would like to be able to print them at an image size of 8.5"x11.0" with 300dpi.
Â
Would I be better off using the resampling capabilities of CS6 or Perfect Resize 7.5 (I do not currently own this software but can afford it) to "upsample" the image or scanning the smaller prints (4.0"x5.3" at 300dpi) with a larger number of pixels and then re-printing the images at the larger size? Note; I own a Epson Perfection V750M Pro scanner that is capable of 6400x6400 scans.
Â
I realize I can have a 30-day free trial of the Perfect Resize 7.5 but thought I would try the forums before I went to the trouble of downloading and using this new software and then comparing it to the scanned and reprinted images.Â

Recently upgraded from CS2 --> CS5 in windows.  This issue started with that upgrade. Been using PS for years. In my large PSD files I use folders to logically-group layers. With CS5, when I put layers into a folder, it automatically groups the layers (not links, groups). When trying to move the contents on ONE LAYER in a folder (using the mouse).... it moves ALL the layers in the folder. Â
Â
If I use the keyboard ARROW keys, I can move the contents of one layer in a folder independently of the other layers in the folder.I have not explicitly asked PS to group or link ANYTHING in my file. The default seems to be to GROUP layers in a folder. It did not used to be this way.Â
Â
If I UNGROUP the layers in the folder, it deletes the folder and the layers are now all at the root level. I lose my organization. The only way to get around this is either:Â
(1)Â leave the folder grouped and use the keyboard arrow keys to move the contents on one layer (way too cumber some), orÂ
(2) MOVE the layer out of the folder, move the contents of it, then move the layer back into the folder.

I am a Photoshop newbie and I have a series of graphics (all 72dpi from a website) that I would like to print in 300dpi. Is it possible to take a 72dpi .jpeg or .gif file and easily convert it to a higher resolution printable graphic? If Photoshop can't do it, is there any type of program that can?

I think I might be doing this wrong, I am trying to get contents of a specific textFrame within first group on layer called "page numbers"
Â
It seems to work, but is a bit sketchy, the documentation indicates textFrame is all the text frames in a document, and that textFrameItem should be the specific one within collections of groups etc, maybe I am misunderstanding. this is what I am using:
Â
var existingPageNumbers = app.activeDocument.layers.getByName('page numbers').groupItems[0].textFrames[0].contents;
Â
is this correct approach...?

I need to find all instances, references, etc, of a layer and change it to another layer. I'm not talking about lines and objects or even blocks, but more like properties nested inside of wall styles and cleanup definitions, anything like that. I can't use the QSELECT or any similar command because the layer in question is being referenced inside of individual styles (i'm guessing that's the only place).Â
We drew our interior walls and our exterior shell for our building on two different drawings so that two people could work on them at the same time. They were xref'd into each other. We got to a point where we needed to put them back into one drawing so I binded the Shell Xref into the interior drawing. This saved us a lot of time but now all the layers from the Shell drawing have this prefix to it "01Shell&0&". This isn't really a problem but I'm a bit OCD and it bothers me to have two different layers for the same thing, one regular and one with the prefix. It means everytime we change the properties of a layer, we have to do it twice. I've already changed everything I could back to the original layers but the Shell layers still show up from time to time. They are nested deep inside of wall styles and custom cleanup properties, custom encaps, and so on.

I got a lot of different text in a ps file because I'm creating a calendar for 2005. I need to change the text color of all the months for example, but without converting the text into a graphic.
Is possible to do so without having to go one by one and replacing the color?

Are there any scripts to find and replace layer names?
Â
There is an excellent script available for Photoshop which allows you to not only replace words in layer names, but also insert words as Prefixes, Suffixes and Sequential Numbers. The illustrator version of this script only allows sequential numbering: It doesn't offer find and replacing of words.
Â
Ideally, it would be great if there was something that could do multiple find and replaces in one go:
(E.g.
You have layers like this Car, Dog, Bat
You enter: car(Option1), dog(Option2), Bat(Option3)
Your layers then become: Option1, Option2, Option3).
)

I am using this script to find and replace words in layers. (The script only targets particualr words, rather than the whole layer name).
Â
I would like to make it so it targets selected layers only.
Â
I have found this script which loops through selected layers only, but I am not sure how to add the find and replace layer name functioality.

I would like to replace a range of colors with a single color in an image.
I know there is the replace color adjustment, but this replaces a single color e.g. 190,190,190 with another color e.g. 200, 200, 200. I would like to replace a range of colors e.g. from 185 to 195 with 200, 200, 200.
