Photoshop :: Why Do I Loose Effects When I Flatten...
Apr 18, 2008
I've been working on a poster composed of several groups of layers and probably around a total of 80 layers. When I flatten the image, I loose all of my layer effects, things like bevel and emboss on text get flattened out.

I have a texture layer in my bevel emboss layer effects applied to a layer. Im trying to flatten the file to get it ready to go to printer and each time I go to flatten, the effect changes and darkens the entire image. I've tried merging the layers, flattening, adding a blank layer and merging down, etc.
Out of options and frustrated. Can someone please tell me how to flatten without losing the texture effect and destroying the integrity of the art?

Been working on my bands logo that has 2 layers on it. One has layer effects on it (inner and outer glow). When I flatten the image, it changed the way that it looked. Found out that it just "looks" like it changes because my canvas wasn't at 100%. I have to zoom out to about 25% to be able to see the whole image and work on it.
Is there any way to accurately see my whole image on the canvas and what the layer effects will actually look like? The way it works now, how the image will change once I flatten it. Being zoomed out makes what I'm actually viewing on the screen to be wrong it seems.
I attached 2 images, (Both are at 25%) the first one is what I'm looking at on screen BEFORE I flatten the image. This is what I want my actual image to look like. The second is AFTER I flatten the image. Notice the inner/outer glow gets smaller. I tried to just increase the size of the glows to compensate once I flatten it since I noticed that they were basically just shrinking. This doesn't really work though and I lose the noise effect on the white outer glow.
How am I supposed to work on the image and see what it looks like as a whole if zooming out doesn't show what the image will ACTUALLY look like?

When I upload photos to[URL]... They will either be a very large file size and delay the download of the page or they will come out grainy. I have tryed adjusting them in Photoshop, but I will either loose quality or they will not be compressed enough. It there an easier tool that I am missing?

When I use photos, they pixelate slightly and loose quite a bit of clarity as soon as I press play. Why is this?

I am learning about CS2 now.
Is it best to flatten my images once I get them completed or is it better to keep them in psd format with the layers intact. What are the pros and cons (other than file size of course).

do you flatten your layers when finished? PSD files are huge and flattening seems to compress the size.
Also, if you do flatten, can you open them up again to make further adjustments?

I installed the download/trial version of X4. I decided to purchase but went through an education/academic seller since I work at a university and get better prices.
I thought I could just input the serial # of the disk I bought but obviously there is a difference in the 2-versions since it won't accept the "educational version" serial #.
So, I figure I need to uninstall the download/trial version and install the what I got on DVD.
I am concerned about loosing the info in the libraries. I made a spare copy of the projects, just in case the uninstall does something with them.

I draw a closed polyline and then I extrude it. But when I want to see the 2d plane and hide the 3d version I cannot go back as the polylines are extruded and everything is disappearing. Should I draw a second poly over the first, then create a new layer, name it for example 3dpolywalls ? Is this the most common technique? Or there is a more efficient way ?

So we have this custom construction note routine. It creates all the notes with station, offset, blah blah , and it is all together as once piece. So if you move the note group the leader will stay attached to it and it holds all of the label properties.
When I copy clip, wblock, insert these key notes into another drawing they are no longer a group and there is no way to move them all together.
This has created a lot of extra work and moving stuff around that does not seem necessary. How can I copy or move construction key notes from one drawing to another without losing the group properties. I have tried WBlock and making sure the grouping is on when I copy and paste/insert them but it still doesn't work.
Oh and we are running a 64bit 2013 with the carlson suite application,

I've never cared for the Ribbon. Â IMO it takes up a lot of valuable screen real estate and spreads out commands I find to useful to be grouped together across multiple menus. Â I did like how the Menu Bar was laid out in LDD because all the commands for anything I could do with alignments, for example, were all in one place. Â
Here's how I set up C3D to have an UI more like LDD:
1. Â Show the Menu Bar: click on the dropdown menu button on far right of the Quick Access Toolbar (at the upper left of the C3D screen) and select Show Menu Bar. Â Old familiars like File, Edit, Points, Alignments, etc should be visible.
2. Â Get rid of the Ribbon: Â type RIBBONCLOSE into the command line and ta-da! Â

I've been using Ps for a while, but i don't really know an efficient way to flatten just 1 layer. 1 way is to put the layer by itself, but this takes time. Is there another way to do this? The effect would be changing an effect (fx tabs, strokes etc) into part of the image, so that part of the effect could be removed.

Is it possible to flatten layer styles (bevel, stroke, drop shadow etc..) into a singular layer?
I've looked everywhere and can't work it out, I'm sure it's easy to do though, right?

I've been printing my images and even with a calibrated monitor they come out darker than what's on my monitor. I'm using the proper printer and paper profiles and got to wondering if my problem might be that I'm printing the psd. In essence, before saving it I just print the image once I've made adjustments to layers, etc.

How would you remove traces of a shadow in an image?
e.g. Let's say I have an image of a sheet of metal with a hole in it. Obviously, in a 2d image, it looks like a hole because part of edges of the metal will be shadowed where the hole is. But how would you edit the image to remove those shadows?
The reason I would need to remove those shadows is because I am importing the image into a game engine, and the bump map will be handling the shadow effects.

on the right hand side, the layer menu shows all of the diffrerent effects you have done to each layer? Then when you flatten it or try to run filters and then save, it completely edits it and smashes everything together. So how can I go back on old graphics that I like that have already been flattened and saved and find out exactly what effects & filters were used?

I am trying to flatten an image in Photoshop while keeping my transparent background. When I flatten, it gives me this white background instead.Â
I've seemed to of figured it out. what I did was>merge all visible layers(except for the background layer),>command and click on the layer to select all>flatten image>command j>deselect> and then delete the flatten layer. this gave me the transparent background I was looking for."

I have a problem with the blend modes. I created a logo and i want to use it on a web page. On the sample picture i have created a random logo to show where my problem lies. The logo has a sunburst behind it which has transparent effects on the outside. Also i have made a big dot behind the logo with a soft brush. I have used blend modes - hard light on the logo and overlay on the white brush.
Now the problem is that i want to flatten the logo and the brush. And keep the background separate from that. The background is a tiled image so it would be better to use it on a web page instead of one flat image. But when i flatten the logo and the brush, then the blend mode effects disappear. I cant use the regular opacity because i want the grain to be shown through the sunburst. Also i cant cut out the image because the sunburst is transparent from the edges. So is there any way to flatten the logo and brush separately from the background and still have the blend mode effects to be shown?

I'm using a Windows 7 icore7 machine. The file I'm working on is composed of six layers: 1) a masked Levels layer; 2) a masked Noise layer; 3) a masked Hipass layer; 4) a convert to BW layer; 5) a copy of the background layer; 6) the background layer. All the eyes on the layers are ON.
Â
When I Flatten Image the contrasty look I've created with the Levels adjustment layer AND with the Hipass layer disappears and the flattened image no longer exhibits those qualities - in other words it reverts back to being soft, low contrast.
Â
All the eyes are ON.
Â
I tried various combinations of MERGE VISIBLE and the same thing happens.I swapped Hipass for Unsharp Mask and for Smart Sharpen and even more weirdness happens - These filters have no effect at all.

Say you have a flattened image, a solid background and text of a differrent colour.
If you wanted to change the colour of the text is there some trick to simultaneously changing the pixels around the letters with slightly different hues (because of the antialiasing) into a relative colour?
i have attached a gif image of a letter zoomed in to give an example.
If you wanted to alter that text to say red could you do it?
