Photoshop :: Trick To Paste Pixel-perfect Vector Image From Illustrator As Smart Object
Aug 23, 2012
Is there a trick to pasting a pixel-perfect vector image from Illustrator into Photoshop as a smart object, and not introduce a bunch of anti-aliasing that was not in the original file? My images are perfectly aligned with the pixel grid in Illustrator, and the pixel preview shows them correctly.
This page is useful for dealing with vector shape layers, but the techniques he talks about don't work for smart objects. Strangely, he says he doesn't have a problem with smart objects, but I do.
Here is an example of what I'm talking about: a simple 13x13 pixel image in Illustrator turns to crap in Photoshop when pasted as a smart object (I know an image as simple as this could be pasted as a shape layer, but the real images I'm working with are much more complex, and cannot be pasted as simple shape layers).
I'm using Photoshop CS4.

making things snap to the pixel grid and in return destroying the ability to align things and rendering the pathfinder tools useless
Try this: New Document for Web (with Align New Objects to Pixel Grid on)Draw a perfect rectangleDraw a perfect ellipseUsing Align to Selection, try aligning the rectangle and the ellipse to their top-left cornerZoom in as far as possible, note that the paths are NOT aligned. Even try manually aligning the two paths by their X and Y co-ordinates, and you will see they snap back 0.5px Repeat the above steps with Align New Objects to Pixel Grid off, and see how things use to actually align...
While I do understand you have done this to try to create pixel-perfect graphics, there has to be another way.. Back in CS4, I had a work-around for the pixel-perfect problem. It involved applying a graphic style with a transform properties of -0.5, -0.5 to individual paths or groups. The reason this worked was that it did not affect the actual co-ordinates of the path and allowed me to snap my paths to whatever I wanted..

I cannot attain pixel perfect stroked rounded corners without a stray pixel being shown on one of the corners. I need pixel accuracy for UI I'm developing (i.e. for screen, not for print). Here's what I'm doing:
1) New document, Align New Objects To Pixel Grid. Document units are in pixels, and Preferences>Units all are set to pixels.
2) Create grey rectangle, something like 100x32
3) Set a 1px black stroke, outside
4) Apply Rounded Corners, 6px radius
5) Make sure you're in Pixel Preview Mode
6) Notice the one stray pixel in the bottom corner that is out of place at the edge of the round.
Here is a screenshot that shows my tests. Note if I use Center Stroke, it seems to work at first glance, but then applying other effects (e.g. 3 px inner glow) are incorrectly applied (due to pixel snapping of the centered stroke).

I am finishing a poster, fully created in shapes in illustrator. Due to customers request I was forced to do some color corrections so I decided to use my PhotoShop CS6.I imported vector files into my photoshop as smart objects, added some adjustments layer, few vector masks and I changed their layer style to get the finest result.
When I finished my work in PS I tried to save this as .pdf In my .psd there are shape layers, some groups and some adjustments layers with layer masks and changed Layer style to "color", one text layer and 3 smart objects imported from illustrator.I want to keep my image scaleable for bigger resolutions.
So I was trying to save this file as Adobe PDF but I found that whole graphic in exported .pdf was converted to raster, besides the border, cut marks and that one text layer.I think that this is because of smart objects. (saving as .pdf without them works pretty good)
Is somehow possible to save this document from photoshop as vector.pdf? or is possible to import group of shapes from illustrator to photoshop as shapes in photoshop? no as smart objects.
I am running out of time so I saved it as high res .Jpeg, but I want to know if this is somehow possible for future use or If I have to rather avoid that solution. Will be included .pdf file as raster? or it will stay scaleable even with smart objects in it?

I am trying to make a text layer in photoshop and convert to a smart vector object, but it only gives me an option to convert to smart object, as opposed to vector smart object. The bad point about this is that the text becomes rasterised when exported to EPS or PDF (same with vector shapes within a smart object), unlike a regular vector layers which output correctly.
Is there anything i'm missing out on, or do I have to revert to importing all text from illustrator and set up my smart vectors like that?

I am storing design elements as Vector Objects in Illustrator so that I can update them quickly when needed. The issue is that they vector objects, when viewed inside of photoshp, are quite a bit more blurry than the photoshop equivalent. Any ideas why? I understand that the Smart Object is rasterized. Do I need to do something to my photoshop document to view it in its final rendered state? Photoshop elements are rasterized as well, so i am not sure what is going on. In the attached pic, the top element is from illustrator, while the bottom is the same thing made inside photoshop.

issue when pasting complex Vector Smart Objects into Photoshop CC?
I created a shape in Illustrator CC, added an Extrude and Bevel effect to it, and then pasted it as a smart object in Photoshop CC. The first example what it looks like in Illustrator CC, the second is what it pastes as in Photoshop CC. As you can see, it is rendering it very poorly and totally unusable as a Smart Object.
I've recently updated to CC, and this never happened in CS5. Is there a new preference in CC that works to render vector objects? maybe something I turned off by accident?

If I duplicate a Vector Smart Object and "Edit Contents", the changes show up in both layers.
How can I create a unique duplicate of a Vector Smart Object so if I "Edit Contents" of one layer, it won't affect the other?

I've copied and pasted a shape from Illustrator into Photoshop CS6.
When I go to transform layer, Photoshop is putting a large bounding box around the object — even though the object's bounds are much smaller.
No other layers are selected or linked to the Vector smart object.

I pasted a vector object into PS CS6 (13.0.1 x32) today directly from Illustrator CS6 (16.0.1 x32), and selected "Paste as Smart Object" (Windows XP Pro SP3).
I then tried to warp the pasted object using the Free Transform tool by dragging one of the corner handles with CTRL held down (Windows).
This usually warpsdistorts the object, but instead, this launched a skew operation.
If I paste as Shape Layer or as Pixels then apply Free Transform, <Ctrl + corner handle drag> performs a warpdistort operation. Also, if I rasterise the pasted AI object, and then convert to a Smart Object I can warpdistort.
Is it not possible to paste an Illustrator vector in as a Smart Object, and then warpdistort it directly using this technique?

I'm running Photoshop CS6 (13.0.1) 64bit on a MacBook Pro running OS X Lion. About 60% of the time when I try to double click a vector smart object instead of opening it up in Illustrator I get an error that says, "Could not edit original smart object because of program error." This most recent time it was a smart object from vector data I copied and pasted from Illustrator into Photoshop.

I'm not quite a novice; I know how to handle photoshop decently, and can do basic work competently. I have an idea of what some but not all of the advanced stuff does, and got handy with automation from an earlier project. My brushwork still sucks, and I'm not very good at making shapes from scratch. Now, what I need help with isn't paid work; I volunteered for light projects, hoping it would expose some of my weaknesses, and force me to work on them. It worked; I'm confronting one of them now.
Here's my problem. I'm making a seal of approval, a kind of tongue-in-cheek project, for a guy who wants it for a forum where he makes mods for a computer game. Since he's a man who tinkers with the guts of the game, I wanted the outer edge of the circle to be blocks, instead of a blue-ribbon frill, so that it imitates the blue-ribbon look, but presents the image of a gear instead. How do I make a repetitive pattern on the outer rim of a circle, and make it pixel-perfect? There has to be a better way than using the info tab to position squares pixel-by-pixel, and rotating them to match the outer edge of the circle. I've been exploring features, and I can't seem to find anything suitable.
I could use a source image to get the shape for a gear, and use that to form a selection to fill, but I want to try and do this from scratch if it's at all possible. I could also put a block in the exact center, make seven copies, and rotate them in increments of 45 degrees, and hold shift as I move them to approximate positions that look close enough to perfect as makes no nevermind, but eight teeth on a gear that fills the entire image is not much; it might work, but I think there's a better way, and I don't think it'd look all that good.

I have been using PS for many years. Recently I switched from CS5 to using the Creative Cloud and CS6. I am now having a problem when I use the eyedropper to sample a color for specific pixels. The problem seems to be that the eyedropper is off/shifted by a half pixel. After playing with it, I have discovered that the shift is up and to the left one half pixel. For example, if I have a single black pixel surrounded by white, zoomed all the way, and I hover over the top left corner of the pixel, I will get the RGB black info displayed and the sampling ring is black as well. If I continue to move upward or to the left, now in the white space, the sampling ring changes to white, but the RGB info still shows black (0,0,0). Moving the eyedropper below or to the right of the center of the black pixel, still shows the sampling ring as black, but the RGB info is white (255,255,255). Here are my specs and steps I have performed so far:
System: HP 8540W, 16GB RAM
Video: Nvidia Quadro FX 880M, 1GB RAM
OS: Windows 7, 64bit running at 1920 x 1080 Res
Software: Photoshop CS6 from Creative Cloud
-I have disabled 'Use Graphics Processor' and that - no difference
-I have reset the photoshop settings file (SHIFT + CTRL + ALT) - no difference
-I have created a clean Windows user profile and launched PS fresh - no difference
-I have tried both 64bit and 32bit PS - no difference
-I have restored a previous image that I had just a couple a months ago with same video drivers but with PS CS5 installed and the problem does not occur.

So apparently:
Create a path snapped to pixel.
Disable align to pixel on all paths.
Select the entire path and create a new symbol with align to pixel disabled OR (it makes no difference) create a new symbol from a temporary path and then paste in place. Everything looks good. Paths are aligned to pixel.
Exit isolation symbol mode.
Go back into isolation mode.
All your paths are offset by miniscule amounts causing them to bleed into each other. You can't realign your paths with snap to pixel because snap to pixel doesn't work for a set of paths because it snaps to a random path or something.
Or you can enable align to pixel and have the copy paste completely mess up your paths.
Why would you expand paths that are snapped to pixel by a miniscule amount on a paste?
Is this fixed in CS6?

I work on CS3 and have often the problem for the logos the Companies send me in .jpg to convert for their design as a vector file.
With vector magic it works always good to smooth with one click the curves full of pixels into a pixel free curve with clear boundary.
I had a look into the old discussion on this forum and found few things in the discussion "raster image .gif". I would like to get an addon that would be a 1 time buying and cheaper as a complete new investment into a whole soft like vector magic.

I create artworks using both Illustrator and Photoshop by pasting different elements as smart objects in Photoshop on different layers but I often have a problem.
To make the pasted content positioned exactly on the same place as in Illustrator, I create a box with no fill and stroke encompassing the whole artwork (with the thick pink frame on the image below) and paste different elements along with the encompassing box on different layers in Photoshop.
The problem is that often during the creation of the artwork it may require using a clipping path containing objects bigger than the encompassing box. Then when pasting in Photoshop the size of the bounding box containing the invisible parts of the objects is factored in instead of the visible parts only.
The image bolow is a simplified example. On the left side is the selection in Illustrator but when pasted in Photoshop although it keeps the same visibility as on the left size, the encompassing frame is the bounding box shown on the right side and this messes up the position of the placed objects. I know the problem can be avoided if I know in advance how big the eventual artwork including the invisible objects would be and create an encompassing box big enough but often this is not the case. What do yo think would be the easiest way to fix this problem once it occurs?
