Photoshop :: Removing Transparent Artifact!
Jan 14, 2007
I scanned a batch of paper photos and one of the photos has a film developing error. There is a transparent artifact of some monument on top of another person. Is there a way to remove this artifact? I have saved this scanned file as a psd file. I'm not that great with Photoshop as I know how to do straight, crop, levels, curves, blur correction and sharpen, but I'm not that familiar with layers, wand, heal and other tools.

I have a logo with a white background that I want to remove and make transparent. I can remove the white background but areas inside the logo that need to be transparent have turned black.

I have a pillow bevel applied to a paint splatter brush image, and I'm having trouble with the shadows. I want to save this splatter as a transparent PNG. The problem is that a drop shadow effect is showing up when I save it this way. I think it's a "shading" setting rather than a true drop shadow, as there is no drop shadow set in the layer styles.
The shadow does not appear when a white background is applied. It only shows when the background is transparent. I've tried reducing the shading opacity in the bevel dialogue, and this does get rid of the drop shadow....the problem is that it also removes the shading from the paint splatter, making the image look flat instead of raised.

Using CoreDRAW, so I drag a PNG from the web ([URL]......) into CoreDRAW. The image shows up perfectly, but the background is black. I know it is a transparent image because the background is white on the web page. I want to make the background transparent.
Also, after the image is transparent, I want to extrude just the visible part. Will I be able to just "Convert to Curves" and then extrude?

I need removing the "transparent" checkered background. I pasted an image and started erasing everything around it. Once everything was checkered but the picture, I copied and pasted it to another image. Now my selection of this image came with the checkered background. I'm trying to find a way to remove this so only my pasted image shows.

I want to remove only semi transparent pixels in a image. I want to keep others without changing them. How can i do that?
And is it possible to increase/decrease of all semi transparent pixels at one time?
For example: When i choose the increasing tranparency-alpha value at 20
if a pixels transparency is 120, it will be 140
if 75, it will be 95
if 255, keep it same
if 0, keep it same

first my system is BenQ r55: core2duo t5500, 2gb RAM, 100Gb HD, Geforce 7400go.
The main problem coming up when i move an object/text/smart object or make a new layer or make a fill in a selection , after doing those activity there will be a random dot(artifact) in a working screen maybe about 1px * 1px with a random color too. I've been reinstalling for a several time, and clean it with wincs3 clean, but is not solve the problem.
I've been trying to remove or switch a ram module one into another and it give the same result. Sometimes during errors occurs, photoshop will crash and give attention about ntdll.dll error too or something like that(dll error).

since i got an FX5700 card i'm getting annoying artifacts in my pictures - odd coloured pixels have been appearing when i scroll about, or show/hide palettes. latest one was dafter : zoomed to like
75%, nothing,
100% could see a random pixel,
110% nothing.
then i was looking at my pic, pressed tab to hide the palettes adn a green pixel appeared. tab again, it vanished.
it's doing my head in! >:-/
been using PS7, upgraded to CS2, since removed it cos i did an XP reinstall and anyway i'd put it in the same folder as PS7 which you ain't supposed to do apparently.
not sure if this is a card or a PShop problem. been playing Delta Force Black Hawk Down too - all the graphic stuff is there, but clicking a menu option hangs the game for about ten seconds. sometimes when a mission starts, same thing, a hang then it runs fine. other things seem fine tho.
PS7 was working fine before, making me thing it's the card, but i'd expect more apps to crash/corrupt...??
i'm running v71 nvidiaa drivers - i tried the v78 pack, they failed to unzip, i tried the v77 and DFBHD menus were corrupted.
current set up :-
XP home
1.5gig
Athlon 2300+
ASUS A7n8x-x mobo
ASUS geforce FX5700 vid card
PShop on a different partition to XP, main scratch is another separate 10 partition.

Notice the artifact line above the Photoshop CS6 icon after most recent update to Mac version? Here is a screen grab of the Photoshop.app icon in it's folder:
Notice the black artifact line above the icon. This is also visible in Launchpad icon and is much more noticeable. Not sure if it is just my system or something is amiss with the icon update for the retina display (this is on a non-retina display MBP 17" (late 2011) and a Thunderbolt display).

When I open up, let's say a picture of a cat, of ordinary size (10x 10cm) and above in Photoshop CS3, I get some strange squarelike artifacts that disappears momentarely when i move my cursor over it. I've added a link to the picture to illustrate my problem. What i can't figure out is when these artifacts occur I'm able to save the image in, let's say .Jpg, and the jpg records the box-artifacts into my final version (se link). I also get strange results while zooming in and out on canvas causing the image to change the box-artifacts into diffrent patterns.
Iv'e tried to update my drivers reagarding every graphical components in my computer but nothing seems to work. I've played with various settings in PShop but nothing changes.
My system info:
Photoshop CS3
Amd 64 X2Core
3.0Ghz, 2GB Ram
Win Xp Servicepack 3
Ati Radeon HD 2900 pro
Directx 10

I'm struggling with a stock agency on a few images where the rejection is for "Artifact" and "Noise". First, let me ask - are these the same? They sometimes list these problems independently. They state that "camera setting and RAW processing are the likely cause". I don't "think" my camera settings are the problem - 100 ISO, 16.7mp RAW's.
So the question is this; how do I tell if I have these issues in a file? They are inspected at 100%.
Next, if I have these issues, what is the best way to fix them? I know of the noise reduction filter, however, not sure of the best settings. Or, should I be considering 3rd party software?

I've been experimenting with using Gaussian Blur on uncompressed TIFF images. The TIFF images consist of scans of printed images with a screen ruling.
I've been noticing an 8x8 blocking artifact when compressing the blurred images to JPEG's. (The reason for not using the scanner's Descreen feature is so that I can selectively blur.)
Here, a JPEG without prior blurring appears on top, and a JPEG with prior blurring appears on the bottom:
Would blurring the JPEG, instead of blurring the TIFF beforehand, be preferable?

I have a box (converted to editable poly) with one chamfered edge. The rendering gives odd texture color around the chamfered edge. What might cause this? Bottom image shows the edges, upper images shows the artifact. Material id-s and smoothing groups are correct. If i divide the ngon on the right side to 4 sided polgions, the result is the same artifact.

I'm currently in CS5, but I believe this was happening in CS4 and maybe earlier.
When in the Save for Web dialogue (it doesn't matter what format I'm saving to or if transparency is on), sometimes an artifact line of some sort appears on the right edge of the image as seen in the screenshot below (the image is just white & black and the gray is off the artboard). It's not just in the preview…it's in the saved file as well. It seems to occur when the edge of the artwork lies at a certain distance from the edge of the artboard and I'm changing the size of the exported image. The exact pattern of the artifact is not consistent, but it's always vertical along the right edge. Changing the image size and whether it's art or type optimized (or not at all) changes the artifacts.
I can usually get around this by adjusting the edge of the artboard, and it sometimes goes away at a certain image size.

I am working on a Mac (Snow Leapord) with Photoshop CS6. When I try to save a sliced and transparent PSD in the Save For Web dialog box with PNG-24, the transparency dissapears once exported. I have the transparency and interlaced boxes both checked. The images appear transparent in the Optimized Save for Web dialog box, but the transparency dissapears once exported out of Photoshop.
I never had a problem with this when I was using CS4...

Drawing A has a grid system Xref-ed into it. It also has a block reference in it, repeated in various places throughout the drawing.
I Xref-ed the grid into the block to check something, and now I can't get it out. This means that the grid now repeats all over Drawing A as well and is generally being a nuisance.
If I try to unload the Xref within the block, it unloads it in Drawing A too. If I try to detach it from the block, it returns this message: Xref [Xref name] has multiple references. Not detached. If I try to detach the Xred from Drawing A, it returns the same message.
How do I unload the same Xref that occurs in a block in a drawing, and in the drawing itself, independently of each other?

Hey, I'm having troubles with applying a gradient tool to a rectangular marquee in Photoshop CS3 for Mac OS X 5.8. Instead of getting a black color to fade into the background, I just get the black color.
And I'm click and dragging about 1.5 inches long. Sometimes I end up covering the entire picture with that color, not just the object (even though the object is selected). Gradient maps and layer masks don't seem to work.

Currrently, we print floor plans to pdf's, open them in Photoshop and make them part transparent and part semi-transparent so that we can overlay them in various visual tools. Is there a way to create pdf's or images where the background is completely transparent and and solid patterns within the floor plan that are semi-transparent?

I have a solid gray filled region that is set to be transparent that is not being transparent. We are trying to put a gray tone over the existing area of the plan. what is weird is that I did the exact same thing to another view & it works perfectly with the region in the background & all the wals & doors showing up correctly. I can't figure out what is different between one view & another.
I've tried changing the filled region to be "moved to back" but nothing changes. if I override the graphics of the element & change it to be transparent the it goes away all together.

I'm sure there's a way to do this but for the life of me I can't remember and can't find it when I do a search. I have an object that is comprised of several lines that are grouped together, and I want to fill the entire group with a fractal cloud 3-color fill. In order to do so, I am creating the fill as a background, and making the object transparent, but when I do that, all my lines disappear (of course!) but I need the lines in it for details. Basically I want to layer this object

I tried searching the forums for "Transparent Grid" and "Transparent Hex", but I could not find anything.I would like to create an image which is a Transparent Grid or Hex which I could lay over other images, like maps for roleplaying games.
I tried to use the eraser tool to remove all the white space from the image "TransparentHexes.png" (see attached). It was long and labor intensive, but when I tried to copy the image and lay it over another image, it removed the transparent parts and made them white space again, completely covering the underlaying image.
Perhaps there is a way to use the "Paint Bucket" to replace white with transparent? And how do I lay a mostly transparent grid over another image?

After installing the CS4 upgrade on my Vista 32-bit machine I went to uninstall CS3. The procedure ended up with the red crosses and an error message stating that CS3 and components could not be removed.
Having deactivated CS3 I tried once more with the same result.
I would appreciate any advice on how best to proceed to uninstall CS3 whilst ensuring I don't screw up my CS4 installation.

I'm running Photoshop CS3 as an upgrade from CS2 using XP Pro, In order to use some third party software I was advised to remove CS2 or the software would not work. But when I did so I found that some of CS3 was compromised as a result. For example, in Bridge I could no longer double click on an image to load it in PS.
Since my CS3 is an upgrade, is it sharing some common files with CS2? And if so, how do I remove it without removing the essential files. And if my CS3 it is not sharing files with CS2, what can I do to remove the latter without messing up the former?
