Photoshop :: Issues Related To Size Reduction
Dec 11, 2007
I am a new member and a fairly new user of Photoshop. The company wehre I work had outsourced icons in 16 px x 16 px size bitmaps with magenta background. They got the results they were looking for. Please see blown up image below:
Notice that the image has a uniform background color that we require!!
I created a similar image of 160 px x 160 px size in Photoshop. When I reduce the image to the icon size of 16 px x 16 px and save as a bitmap file, the background is pixalated.

I'm using Photoshop 7. I create a new document 8.5 x 11 inches at 150 pixels per inch.
I draw a circle 1" from the top of the image. The circle is 3" in radius.
When I print the circle is nearly .25" smaller in radius and slightly less than 1" from the top.
Why is the output not in the same placement and proportions as the image on the screen?

what's the best way to reduce an image's size and still keep it crisp?
If resorted to creating images ten times the target size and then reducing them later on to the target size, as i can control the FX much MUCH easier.
but the only issue is when i reduce their size, they don't look as good? i know it is possible somehow to keep the quality, but i'm not sure how.
Trying to reduce an image of 6000x1200 to a tenth of it's size for a Signature.

I'm editing digi photos about 6mb in size and dragging/copying them into another file (template) which is much smaller. When the photo appers in the new file it's huge. So I use the free transform tool to get the image down to the size and position I want and all is good.
I lose the focus of my subject (close up of Rolex-Omega watch's). Now the original shot is perfect and most of the time I dont have a problem in that the focus remains perfect after reducing the image down. Have I clicked on something that I shouldn't? I cannot work it out, the photo's are all in a batch, the first 4 were perfect and the 5th, just not having it, even after re-taking the picture.

I'm using Photoshop CS6 (64-bit) and ACR 7.1, all patched to the latest version today (13 June), and running Windows 7 64-bit. When I reduce the image size of an originally smart object using bicubic, the edges will be somewhat transparent, creating an ugly border around the image.
Step 1: Open a raw file. ACR 7.1 will pop up. The raw file is a CR2 file produced by Canon EOS 7D. Workflow option: sRGB, 16 bit, 3888x2592.
Step 2: Press shift+click the Open button to open it as smart object.
Step 3. Right click the layer and choose rasterize layer. When you zoom the image, there is nothing wrong in the edges.
Step 4: Resize the image (CTRL+ALT+I) for example to 300x200 using Bicubic resampling (bicubic auto, whatever).
The edges (outermost 1 pixel) will be transparent!
This doesn't happen:
* in photoshop cs5
* if I use bilinear or other resampling
* if I import the file from ACR to PS as a normal bitmap (not using shift+click)
My workflow involves opening files from Camera Raw as smart object,

I have a video that is 2:20-long, so it is a bit longer than a DVD/DL (8.5GB) at full HQ. But, when I let X6 "make it fit", it seems to reduce it by almost 50%, making the DVD folders only 5.1GB. This really ruins the quality.
Is there any way I can either control the reduction or tell it to leave the output alone when writing to hard-drive/DVD folders. I can then use a different DVD/video processing program that is smart enough to control the reduction just enough to comfortably fit/fill a DVD/DL (I have such a program) and not use a 100/50/25% approach to compressing/reducing.

I have been using Autocad 2002 for a long time. Over the years I have a drawing in which I save my special lines, blocks, north arrow, etc.
I have tried everything to make this file smaller, nothing works.
I have even coppied just 1 item and created a new drawing, pasted it in , purged, audited, wblocked and the file size stays around 3 mgs in size.

I have many images of slides scanned at high res (4800 DPI, maximum pixels 5214x3592). Although I will be saving these as loss less TIFs, I also wish to make JPGs from them that I wish to be just less than 5 MB in file size. Aside from cropping, I know I can achieve such a reduction of JPG file size by a combination of saving to lower quality JPG compression or reducing image size. My question is, what is theoretically or practically better, achieving this mostly by reducing image total pixels or by reducing JPG compression quality.

I am trying to learn how to use Photoshop CS4 and to print images. I have consulted several books, web sites, manuals, etc. and one of the things I realize I need to do is to learn how to relate the image on my screen with the print that comes off my printer.
I'm using a Spyder 3 Pro monitor calibration device, I have adjusted the color settings in Photoshop, I have downloaded ICC profiles off the web (I'm having trouble installing them) etc., etc. etc.
And at the end of all this, the prints I created when I was 'winging it', are far superior to what I'm printing after all these adjustments. My instinct is telling me that its still worth trying to follow these instructions and that it will all come together at some point but the variables seem endless. Can anyone send me to a clearly written site, source?

I am using photoshop CS3 to edit some pictures for a catalogue. Usually i cut around the picture, select magic wand, select inverse, and refine edges to soften the pictures jagged edges.
Now all of a sudden refine edges doesnt behave this way! It doesn't do anything! it shows a preview, but once i click ok, nothing happens. I know this has nothing to do with layers as have checked and there is only one, otherwise i wouldnt see a preview either.
One curious thing it does do is, once ok'd, refine edges actually changes my selection field radius to what it would be had i actually refined the edges. But no change to the graphic itself.

How do I uninstall all the things that Photoshop CS6 installs? I don't see a "custom" or "advanced" installer option, but it puts all kinds of things on my computer that I do not want (I only want Photoshop installed). The full installation is 2GB, which is quite a lot (I have a small SSD)

The following processes: Fill, Stroke, Text Coloring (highlighted selections from chromatic palette), Mask Layer coloring, etc. are all failing unaccountably. When Menu-selecting Fill or Stroke, or when clicking the color wells to access the Color Picker (for text, mask-layer color, etc.) I do NOT get the usual Color Picker window. Instead, the icon instantly changes to the eyedropper (and sometimes the color sampler) icon, all menu options are greyed out, and all attempts to select another tool or do anything at all result in that awful 'doonk! doonk!' sound. I learned, (after a horrible 24hrs of even reformatting my computer to cure PShop) that at least the freeze can be broken by hitting 'Enter', and sometimes only after hitting it many, many times. The command in question then executes without new editing, and is usually useless. I have realized that all of these: Fill, Stroke, Mask/Text color, ALL involve the Color Picker, to which I seem to have been denied access. That last time 2 years ago it involved the Hue/Sat sliderwindow, but at least that seems to be working fine.
To compound and complicate the problem: Duplicate and Print Preview are also failing to offer any kind of editing window before I must inevitably just hit 'Enter' many, many times before the process is executed to whatever settings were last recorded before this problem, and of course, it is useless to me. I can't even resize images on the page before printing them anymore and they end up just zoomed and cropped.

I can't remember reading any tutorials on dealing with noise in Photoshop. Scott Kelby dedicates a whole paragraph in his CS3 book for digital photographers. I need to make a decision on what noise reduction plugin to buy, so if you can reply to thread I can get a consensus of what is being used most.

If the circumstances force me to work on images with noise which have to be enlarged, and if I use noise reduction based on noise-pattern-recognition, is it better to carry out the noise reduction before or after the enlargement (and in case the answer is after, which resampling method would resample the image (and thus the noise) best for subsequent noise reduction?)

Every time I try to use shake reduction, it works on the photo but then immediately crashes Photoshop CC and I have to reboot the computer to get it to open again. I suspect it has something to do with RAM. Mine is set for 1192MB. Is that enough? The images I tried were about 2000 x 3000 at 72ppi.

I really want to use the Shake Reduction tool but it is not appearing in my filters list even though I have Photoshop CC all updated? What to do to gain this amazing filter.

I would like to know to reduce a photograph to a simple drawing using a minimal number of colors such as 3 or 4, or even black and white. Here are a couple of samples of what I would like to be able to do. Is there a PS filter or technique that will do this type of thing?

To me, this sounds completely backwards, but for some reason I cannot figure out how to do this the right way. Every time I use Image Size to reduce my high res image proportions, my resolution goes to shxx. By luck, I managed to find the right way to do it last week, and I cannot get it to work today.

Wanted to use this new, cool tool, but got the error message "No more virtual tiles can be allocated". ???
This is not a scratch disk error, as I have two-2TB drives as my scratch disks (nothing on either yet). 16GB memory (RAM), 14680MB available memory to PS, 2030 available VRAM. Running nVida GeForce GTX 670 on a Intel Core i7-3770 CPU @ 3.40GHz.
Is this a GPU function that may not be available to some graphic cards? Is my image too big (4000x3000px)?

Working on a night shot of a building and processed through ACR7.2 and forgot to reduce the noise - and opened in Photoshop. Went to Filter/Reduce Noise and immediately get wierd banding in the window blinds. This banding is there regardless of the noise reduction settings and could not get it to go away - See attached screen shot of before and after applying the filter. So I went back and opened the file again in ACR7.2 and applied the Noise Reduction there and bingo, noise level dropped and looked good with no banding. Looks like the Noise Reduction capabilities in ACR7.2 are way better than the Noise Reduction filter - but surely the banding should not be there; especially if images do not get processed through Camera RAW.
Running latest version of Photoshop CS6 (latest patches applied), Windows 7 x64 16GB RAM, Intel 4000 with latest drivers installed. Camera file was ACR2 from Canon 5DMKII imported as a DNG file - then opened in ACR 7.2
Before Image Opened in Photoshop before applying the Noise Reduction Filter. After Image in Photoshop after applying the Noise Reduction Filter. Seems like a bug to me .By the way, the screen captures are from the image viewed at 100%.
