Photoshop :: Effective Image Size Reduction?
Jul 3, 2012
what's the best way to reduce an image's size and still keep it crisp?
If resorted to creating images ten times the target size and then reducing them later on to the target size, as i can control the FX much MUCH easier.
but the only issue is when i reduce their size, they don't look as good? i know it is possible somehow to keep the quality, but i'm not sure how.
Trying to reduce an image of 6000x1200 to a tenth of it's size for a Signature.

I'm editing digi photos about 6mb in size and dragging/copying them into another file (template) which is much smaller. When the photo appers in the new file it's huge. So I use the free transform tool to get the image down to the size and position I want and all is good.
I lose the focus of my subject (close up of Rolex-Omega watch's). Now the original shot is perfect and most of the time I dont have a problem in that the focus remains perfect after reducing the image down. Have I clicked on something that I shouldn't? I cannot work it out, the photo's are all in a batch, the first 4 were perfect and the 5th, just not having it, even after re-taking the picture.

I'm using Photoshop CS6 (64-bit) and ACR 7.1, all patched to the latest version today (13 June), and running Windows 7 64-bit. When I reduce the image size of an originally smart object using bicubic, the edges will be somewhat transparent, creating an ugly border around the image.
Â
Step 1: Open a raw file. ACR 7.1 will pop up. The raw file is a CR2 file produced by Canon EOS 7D. Workflow option: sRGB, 16 bit, 3888x2592.
Step 2: Press shift+click the Open button to open it as smart object.
Step 3. Right click the layer and choose rasterize layer. When you zoom the image, there is nothing wrong in the edges.
Step 4: Resize the image (CTRL+ALT+I) for example to 300x200 using Bicubic resampling (bicubic auto, whatever).
 Â
The edges (outermost 1 pixel) will be transparent!
This doesn't happen:
* in photoshop cs5
* if I use bilinear or other resampling
* if I import the file from ACR to PS as a normal bitmap (not using shift+click)
Â
My workflow involves opening files from Camera Raw as smart object,

I have many images of slides scanned at high res (4800 DPI, maximum pixels 5214x3592).  Although I will be saving these as loss less TIFs, I also wish to make JPGs from them that I wish to be just less than 5 MB in file size. Aside from cropping, I know I can achieve such a reduction of JPG file size by a combination of saving to lower quality JPG compression or reducing image size. My question is, what is theoretically or practically better, achieving this mostly by reducing image total pixels or by reducing JPG compression quality.Â

I am a new member and a fairly new user of Photoshop. The company wehre I work had outsourced icons in 16 px x 16 px size bitmaps with magenta background. They got the results they were looking for. Please see blown up image below:
Notice that the image has a uniform background color that we require!!
I created a similar image of 160 px x 160 px size in Photoshop. When I reduce the image to the icon size of 16 px x 16 px and save as a bitmap file, the background is pixalated.

I have a video that is 2:20-long, so it is a bit longer than a DVD/DL (8.5GB) at full HQ. But, when I let X6 "make it fit", it seems to reduce it by almost 50%, making the DVD folders only 5.1GB. This really ruins the quality.
Is there any way I can either control the reduction or tell it to leave the output alone when writing to hard-drive/DVD folders. I can then use a different DVD/video processing program that is smart enough to control the reduction just enough to comfortably fit/fill a DVD/DL (I have such a program) and not use a 100/50/25% approach to compressing/reducing.

I have been using Autocad 2002 for a long time. Over the years I have a drawing in which I save my special lines, blocks, north arrow, etc.
I have tried everything to make this file smaller, nothing works.
I have even coppied just 1 item and created a new drawing, pasted it in , purged, audited, wblocked and the file size stays around 3 mgs in size.

To me, this sounds completely backwards, but for some reason I cannot figure out how to do this the right way. Every time I use Image Size to reduce my high res image proportions, my resolution goes to shxx. By luck, I managed to find the right way to do it last week, and I cannot get it to work today.

I've created a FIRE psd image and saved it as a jpg file:
I would now like to use this image. To do this I need to reduce this image to the following precise dimenstions: height: 238, width: 264. I know how to select and trim the image that I want using the Square deselect tool. No problem there. What I don't understand is how can I see the precise dimensions of this new image BEFORE I save it as a new file. Is there a way for me to see these dimensions as I select the image and adjust the selection accordingly?

hat is the best way to resize (reduction) an image and maintain the image sharpness. The image I have is a high resolution 500 x 500 pixel logo with a text which I have the Adobe Illustrator (AI) vector file.
I need to resize the image to as small as 130 x 40 pixels and export to gif.
I have tried the following methods:Photoshop Resize > Resample Image > Bicubic Sharper (best for reduction)Create a 130 x 40 pixel Photoshop file and copied object from AI to Photoshop as a smart object and export as gifCreate a 130 x 40 pixel AI file and export to gif . However, I tried to view the image from my mobile phone (iPhone), it is not sharp even though I have created from the vector ai file.
I research on the internet and find out that I can actually create a double size image and use CSS to control (divided dimension by 2) so that the sharpness can be maintained. However, I do not have control of the site html/css hence I can't use the method.
Any other way to resize (reduction) an image and maintain the sharpness.

Cloning usually applies to a single object. For example if I take a square and make a clone of it, make any changes to the original, the clone will change.
However, if there's a group of a square, a text saying HELLO, Â and a circle. I make a clone of this group. Then if I squeeze the only the circle in the original [thereby making it an ellipse], the clone won't change. Is there a way to do this?

I've tried doing this on similar close-ups of my own characters, but I can't get it as good as done here: I know it requires layers, and the smudge tool to get the results. But what is the technique used here where the lines are like 'marching ants"?------is this simply the 'magic wand' tool? I also reckon that Gaussian blur is used here also.
The steps are not made clear on this very effective technique---also the GIMP typeface/controls are not in English, but hopefully some good folks on here can recognize the style used here.....it's just the sort of thing I'm looking for to bring a bit of depth to my cartoon character shading.
I'd love to introduce this technique [ So far, I haven't been able to get the the dodge/burn tool to work as effectively as some other GIMP users can, but I'll certainly return to it].

I recently upgraded to LR 4.1, and I'm having a problem with the spot removal tool. I have 100% opacity selected, but it's only partially removing spots - looks as though it's only operating around 50 or 60%. Is there a feathering or hardness setting hidden somewhere?

What is the simplest, most effective way to mange a "main" cui globally, while allowing users to sustain their own workspace environment? In other words, I wish to globally administer the CUI by periodically adding various corporate settings (e.g., custom menus, ribbons, commands, etc). At the same time, I want each user to be allowed to keep their personal Workspace environment settings as desired.

I'm using Photoshop 7. I create a new document 8.5 x 11 inches at 150 pixels per inch.
I draw a circle 1" from the top of the image. The circle is 3" in radius.
When I print the circle is nearly .25" smaller in radius and slightly less than 1" from the top.
Why is the output not in the same placement and proportions as the image on the screen?

I am trying to create some images in PS2 that have to be 3.5 to 4.0 mb. When viewing the Image Size screen, I might see an image size of 9.6 mb. However, when I save the image and run my mouse over the image in Bridge, it shows a size between 2 to 3 mb. I can't figure out why this discrepancy, or what math I need to do in order to figure out how to create the required image size other than by trial and error.

I have CS5.1 on a Macbook Pro.I have an incredibly frustrating problem.   I've seen similar questions, but not an answer that has resolved this for me. I have an image I have sized to fit an 8.5 x 11 inch paper. Canvas and image size all indicate my image is sized at 7.33 x 11 inches. It is at 300 dpi. Print size view indicates full space is utilized on either side….BUT…
Â
When I go to print, I click "scale to fit media" (which is an 8.5 x 11 paper sitting in printer) image prints smaller with a bar on one side. .
When I uncheck STFM,
I get:
scale - 92.67%,

I have a created a new PSD that is 8 1/2 x 11.The canvas size is the same 8 1/2 x 11.I want to put a border around the picture (say 1/2 of an inch all around), and put the finished picture in a Picture frame. After it is in the frame, you would be able to see the entire picture plus the border. Q. Should I change (reduce image size) of the PSD to (for this example), 8 x 10 1/2.     Then increase the canvas size to 8 1/2 x 11. After I increased the canvas size, do a Paint Bucket fill with white (to create the White border)? then print the changed size PSD on 8 1/2 x 11 paper so that it will fit into a 8 1/2 x 11 picture frame I realize I could have just created the new PSD to be 8 x 10 1/2 in the first place.

When I save a file to jpeg the image size in photoshop remains the same as it was as a tiff file BUT according to the information that comes up in windows properties the file is much smaller (300k vs 2.9mg).  Can you advise me which is the correct file size?  If the correct size is the one showing in windows (300K) does mean that the file compressed in JPG and lost a lot of information?
and if this is the case how can I prevent that from happening and still save the file as a JPG?  [ I would like the image to remain the size photoshop shows it to be] . Thank you very much.
