Photoshop :: Transparent Edge Bug In Image Size Reduction Using Bicubic?
Jun 13, 2012
I'm using Photoshop CS6 (64-bit) and ACR 7.1, all patched to the latest version today (13 June), and running Windows 7 64-bit. When I reduce the image size of an originally smart object using bicubic, the edges will be somewhat transparent, creating an ugly border around the image.
Step 1: Open a raw file. ACR 7.1 will pop up. The raw file is a CR2 file produced by Canon EOS 7D. Workflow option: sRGB, 16 bit, 3888x2592.
Step 2: Press shift+click the Open button to open it as smart object.
Step 3. Right click the layer and choose rasterize layer. When you zoom the image, there is nothing wrong in the edges.
Step 4: Resize the image (CTRL+ALT+I) for example to 300x200 using Bicubic resampling (bicubic auto, whatever).
The edges (outermost 1 pixel) will be transparent!
This doesn't happen:
* in photoshop cs5
* if I use bilinear or other resampling
* if I import the file from ACR to PS as a normal bitmap (not using shift+click)
My workflow involves opening files from Camera Raw as smart object,

what's the best way to reduce an image's size and still keep it crisp?
If resorted to creating images ten times the target size and then reducing them later on to the target size, as i can control the FX much MUCH easier.
but the only issue is when i reduce their size, they don't look as good? i know it is possible somehow to keep the quality, but i'm not sure how.
Trying to reduce an image of 6000x1200 to a tenth of it's size for a Signature.

I'm editing digi photos about 6mb in size and dragging/copying them into another file (template) which is much smaller. When the photo appers in the new file it's huge. So I use the free transform tool to get the image down to the size and position I want and all is good.
I lose the focus of my subject (close up of Rolex-Omega watch's). Now the original shot is perfect and most of the time I dont have a problem in that the focus remains perfect after reducing the image down. Have I clicked on something that I shouldn't? I cannot work it out, the photo's are all in a batch, the first 4 were perfect and the 5th, just not having it, even after re-taking the picture.

I have many images of slides scanned at high res (4800 DPI, maximum pixels 5214x3592). Although I will be saving these as loss less TIFs, I also wish to make JPGs from them that I wish to be just less than 5 MB in file size. Aside from cropping, I know I can achieve such a reduction of JPG file size by a combination of saving to lower quality JPG compression or reducing image size. My question is, what is theoretically or practically better, achieving this mostly by reducing image total pixels or by reducing JPG compression quality.

I have two related questions:
1. I am not able to do a somewhat basic task. I have an image on a seperate layer and I want to merge it, but I want the edges to be more softened.I used to use photoshop deluxe, it had a paint brush with a soft round tip that you could make hard edges softer. Its not like smudge, more like a softer eraser. Is there a way to do that?
2. Is there some way to make any image gradually more transparent either from one edge to another or from the center out? (Like the effect you get using gradient, but with a gradual opacity to an opaque object/image)

I am a new member and a fairly new user of Photoshop. The company wehre I work had outsourced icons in 16 px x 16 px size bitmaps with magenta background. They got the results they were looking for. Please see blown up image below:
Notice that the image has a uniform background color that we require!!
I created a similar image of 160 px x 160 px size in Photoshop. When I reduce the image to the icon size of 16 px x 16 px and save as a bitmap file, the background is pixalated.

I have a video that is 2:20-long, so it is a bit longer than a DVD/DL (8.5GB) at full HQ. But, when I let X6 "make it fit", it seems to reduce it by almost 50%, making the DVD folders only 5.1GB. This really ruins the quality.
Is there any way I can either control the reduction or tell it to leave the output alone when writing to hard-drive/DVD folders. I can then use a different DVD/video processing program that is smart enough to control the reduction just enough to comfortably fit/fill a DVD/DL (I have such a program) and not use a 100/50/25% approach to compressing/reducing.

I have been using Autocad 2002 for a long time. Over the years I have a drawing in which I save my special lines, blocks, north arrow, etc.
I have tried everything to make this file smaller, nothing works.
I have even coppied just 1 item and created a new drawing, pasted it in , purged, audited, wblocked and the file size stays around 3 mgs in size.

To me, this sounds completely backwards, but for some reason I cannot figure out how to do this the right way. Every time I use Image Size to reduce my high res image proportions, my resolution goes to shxx. By luck, I managed to find the right way to do it last week, and I cannot get it to work today.

I've created a FIRE psd image and saved it as a jpg file:
I would now like to use this image. To do this I need to reduce this image to the following precise dimenstions: height: 238, width: 264. I know how to select and trim the image that I want using the Square deselect tool. No problem there. What I don't understand is how can I see the precise dimensions of this new image BEFORE I save it as a new file. Is there a way for me to see these dimensions as I select the image and adjust the selection accordingly?

hat is the best way to resize (reduction) an image and maintain the image sharpness. The image I have is a high resolution 500 x 500 pixel logo with a text which I have the Adobe Illustrator (AI) vector file.
I need to resize the image to as small as 130 x 40 pixels and export to gif.
I have tried the following methods:Photoshop Resize > Resample Image > Bicubic Sharper (best for reduction)Create a 130 x 40 pixel Photoshop file and copied object from AI to Photoshop as a smart object and export as gifCreate a 130 x 40 pixel AI file and export to gif . However, I tried to view the image from my mobile phone (iPhone), it is not sharp even though I have created from the vector ai file.
I research on the internet and find out that I can actually create a double size image and use CSS to control (divided dimension by 2) so that the sharpness can be maintained. However, I do not have control of the site html/css hence I can't use the method.
Any other way to resize (reduction) an image and maintain the sharpness.

When I go to crop or move an image close to the edge of the canvas it jumps to the edge. I am having trouble especially with cropping the space between the image and the edge of the canvas the way I want it. turning off this jumping to edge problem I'm having?
Also, I've used CS4 a fair bit and haven't come across this same problem but in PE when I'm editing things like adjusting text on a layer and I'm changing options with hotkeys to resize the text box for eg, Elements seems to jump to the background layer quite alot and then I have to click back on the layer I want to edit between changing tools. Is it something to do with the Esc key?

I love refine edge in Photoshop CS5, but parts of my image go semi-transparent. Is there anyway I can fix this issue after Ive created my mask?
Ive checked out some videos (about 6 mins 10 seconds in) PW124 - Photoshop CS5 Review - Refine Edge Tool - YouTube
The guy seems to be painting over some layer or something with a black or white brush and it brings it back in correctly, but I cant replicate this.

I created an oval logo from scratch. Its a gif. I saved it using the "save for web" option under the File menu. I use this logo for our website. As long as the logo is placed on a page with a light background it looks ok. But when I put it on a page with a darker background, the image is outlined in white. Its getting very frustrating. This is happening with any image that i give an transparent background.

When resizing a layer with a layer mask and using any bicubic method, the layer maks scales 1 pixel differently from the other layers. Is this normal due to some component of bicubic interpolation or is it a bug?
Try the following:
Create a new image in Photoshop at 800 px x 800 px
Leave the locked BG layer and create a new layer
Fill the new layer with green (or your favorite color)
Add a layer mask to the green layer and fill the mask with black (via Fill with foreground color or Alt+Del) to completely remove any visible green from your document
Now use Image-> Image Size (Opt+Cmd+I) to resize your document using any bicubic scaling method. Resize to 600 px by 600 px.
Now zoom in on the document's edge at the pixel level. Is it completely white as it should be?In my case, no. However, if I use 'nearest neighbor' interpolation method when scaling, I do get a solid white edge. Even more strange, if I fill the layer mask with black by inverting it rather than filling it the problem does not happen.

In PS 6 an eraser set at 0% hardness (using a round brush) made a smooth transition from center to edge. Now in PS CC it transitions abruptly at a point near the edge and then goes to a pale grey fade. Why is that? And it's only doing so in dark areeas. Medium and light tones erase smoothly.
Attached are samples of my trying to make it work. This is a transparent layer with the background not visible (all white instead of the standard checkerboard). I should explain the "L" shaped erased part is two brush edges: hard, left; soft, right.

I have a Photoshop image, which has been edited down to a shape of a person, with a transparent background. I would like to use this image in Illustrator, and do not need it to be vector, but would like the object to be shaped like the image, rather than a rectangle. How do I get the Illustrator to read the edge of the image as the edge of the object?

I have added an animation (snow flakes falling down) in front of the whole home page of a full-Edge site. The problem is now that the snowShower symbol captures the click events.
How could I make it "transparent" to clicks, that is transmitting them to the buttons underneath?

I'm trying to make the attached icons have a transparent background. Tried just selecting the white space but this causes the edges to look awful on dark backgrounds.
I've also tried the Grim Color Reaper but cannot find a setting that keeps the icon as it is, only making the edge semi transparent.

1. How do I connect, collapse and disconnect windows (tool bar, property manager, etc.)? They get stuck together and I can't unstick them.
2. What's the difference between canvas size and image size?
3. Which tools are only for web design (i.e. tools I can ignore if I'm not doing that)?
4. What's the subselection tool do?
For Photoshop:
1.Why is the original layer always locked?
2. Whats the name of the property inspector in PS? And is it called inspector or manager in FW?

I'm using Photoshop 7. I create a new document 8.5 x 11 inches at 150 pixels per inch.
I draw a circle 1" from the top of the image. The circle is 3" in radius.
When I print the circle is nearly .25" smaller in radius and slightly less than 1" from the top.
Why is the output not in the same placement and proportions as the image on the screen?
