I'm currently working on a Mac G3 with a G4 chip upgrade. I'm pretty short, however, on HD space (only 2.5 GB left), and I don't want to deal with putting in a new and bigger internal HD on this particular machine (too many issues there). My question is, how much of a performance drop off will I get if, instead of a new internal drive, I get a fast, FireWire, external drive?
I keep having a problem where I cannot unmount my external hard drives while Photoshop is running. I have them unchecked in the System Preference for "scratch disks", so what else can cause Photoshop to use the external disks? It's a real drag having to quit Photoshop every time I want to move my laptop into another room.  (By the way, the only reason this disk is attached is it contains my music library, so no, I'm not opening files off that disk either.)
My computer is getting glitchy and I want to burn a copy of my cs6 to HD or thumb drive. I think it's legal would like to be sure. I went to pdf files suggested for another persons question but it is in every language but English???How to accomplish this burned copy
My i mac died. i have an external back up. apple store will transfer it to my new computer. but how can that be possible that Photoshop will just transfer.
my internal driver is full on my laptop. I have to either buy a new external HD (500GB/7200rpm) or change to a larger internal one (500GB/7200 or 5400rpm). I am aware the external one will be lower compared to internal one. is it acceptable? I think that PS will use HD only when opening and saving the photos. It uses memory and scratch disk (configured on internal one) most of the time. I can not add the second internal HD. Only Photshop CS4 and MS office installed on this laption which is only used for PS. OS is window 7 64-bit with 4GB memory.
when I place a SmartObject from an external file PSP CS3 seems to store it in the current file; if I change the external file, the placed object does not change automatically (I have to use the replace function to apply changes in the external file).
Is there any way to use external files as SmartObjects and apply changes in the external files automatically?
Totally new to Photoshop Elements 11. Watched tutorial videos, but still don't know how to import photos from my external HD. I search for file on E: drive and select Get Media, but all I get is the photo (have to Search to find it). The file is still on my E: and I don't see how to import a copy of the photo to my C: drive
On a 64 bit machine with the 64 bit version of LR installed, evoking Photoshop as external editor still incorrectly opens the 32 bit version of PS, not the 64 bit as used to happen with LR4. One can work around this if one remembers to open the 64 bit version of PS beforehand, but still, this is surely an easy bug to correct.
Because OS 10.8.2 was the worst update in Apple history, for the first time ever I decided to do the 10.8.3 update on an external boot disk before sacrificing my internal disk. I used Super Duper to make a bootable clone of my internal , booted from the external and then did the combo update.
The first app I tried was Photoshop CS 5.1. It tried to open but I got a window that said "could not inialize scratch disk because disk could not be found". After I clicked OK on that, another window said "could not open because disk could not be found" . I have never tried to open Photoshop any version from a bootable backup before and I don't know what this means. The scratch disk for Photoshop is set to be my internal drive Macintosh HD.Â
Why would it not find it? If I were booting from my internal and had set the scratch to the external it would find it. Why would the app be looking for itself on another disk?
After recloning my internal which is still 10.8.2, I have not yet booted from the external to see if the problem was somehow caused by 10.8.3, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was. People have reported the usual weird behavior of an upgrade already on forums, but not this paricular problem
Due to space problems I just moved all my photographs to a 3TB external disk. Now when I try to write metadata to a photograph in Bridge CS6 all I get is error messages and nothing gets written. If I move the photographs back to the PC everything works okay.
I'm just wondering if there is a font client that can be downloaded. I like to see my fonts in their respective fonts like in Microsoft Word and I haven't been able to acheive this in Photoshop yet. I'm not sure if it would be a Photoshop plug-in or an external client.
I am using photoshop cs4 and was just wandering if this version still has the ability to preview a still image of what you are working on via firewire output? I know you could in other versions but I do not see it anywhere under the file/export menu. I have a device conected and it works fine with Premiere and After effects but I do not see it show up in Photoshop. Anything I need to setup to make this work?Â
I have been having an issue with CS2 for some time now. Every time I connect an e-SATA external hard drive, the message pops up saying "the licence configuration data is no longer usable. Click OK to continue".  A new popup window appears, with the message: "Your 30 day period to use Photoshop without activation is over. Code:
My Dell laptop crashed about a year ago, and I was able to have the hard drive backed up to an external. I now need my PhotoShop CS which is on the external hard drive. I need to know how to install PhotoShop, and others in the creative suite, from the external drive. I am having a problem figuring out which files need to be installed first, i.e. .exe and .dll files.
The hard drive is an iMicro 3.5" SATA and IDE HDD
I am currently running Windows Vista, Gateway Notebook **I can not find the original Creative Suite cds; I think they may have been "accidentally" thrown away by someone other than myself.
I have elements 7 and want to do a backup for a spare, but also use the backup to move to a new computer I just purchased. When I do the backup (full), it runs (I give it about 3 hrs). When I open the task manager is says not responding. Is there another way to move the pictures and captions to a backup and to put on the new computer.  Were talking 42 gb of pictures.
I would like to install Element 12 and all my image files together on one external hard drive, so that I can then plug the drive into any computer whereever I am (i.e., my home desktop, my laptop, etc.) and have full access to the Elements program and be able to access and work with all my image files (i.e. add photos from my camera, delete bad photos, add tags, adjust date and time, etc) regardless of which computer I am using.Â
I've copied my external HDD contents to my PC HDD and want to continue using PSE9 organiser as before - can I change the path to the new location, or do I have to delete the original catalog and start afresh to organise my photos / videos (Win7)
I have set up iPhoto so that I can use Photoshop Elements as the external editor. When I select a photo and choose 'External Editor,' Elements comes up but my photo is not displayed.
A couple of weeks ago a weird problem has started ocurring. Photoshop stopped working as an external editor. When I click Edit in Photoshop, Photoshop opens and it seems like it's trying to open the image but then nothing happens. It only works when I export the image as a PSD and open it then. I think I have managed to narrow it down a little because when I click the .dng file in Finder, Photoshop tries to open the file and comes back with an error message saying "Der Vorgang konnte nicht ausgeführt werden, weil das Dateiformatmodul die Datei nicht interpretieren kann" which roughly translates to that the file can't be interpreted. I think there may be something wrong with how Lightroom converts DNG files because I can open older files fine. Funnily enough I can even open some (really just a small percentage) of the current .dngs when I can't open others. I tried reinstalling both Lightroom and Photoshop to no avail. It happens with both Photoshop CS6 and CC.
I had a virus and had to reload photoshop on my pc. Now photoshop cant find the photos on my external hard drive. What to do for photoshop to find the photos on my drobo.
I bought a highly recommended Western Digital My Book Essential external hard drive to backup image files, then discovered that the WD software doesn't support .dng files. Is there any way to get around the WD software and backup .dng files to the WD external drive? I'm using PS CS5.1, version 12.1 x32 on a PC with Windows XP professional.
When electing in the preferences to not open image in Tabs. The images open with only about 25% of the image area showing. Forcing me to (command) 0 for full to screen preview or (command) +/- to see the image. Â I am not talking about seeing the image at 100% resolution just the entire image within the floating window without having to command before view. Â So to be clear when opening on the retina display it open with a full image preview. When opening on a second monitor either apple display with Thunderbolt or Eizo with HDMI it errors to this. Â I have also tested this on a friends machine and his does not have the same problem with identical set-up.
I originally want to create some text and add effects to it. But as I add effects or, especially, scale, it, I find I need to go back and change the text image (make lines of the characters wider, change proportions...etc.  So I imported my text as a smart image and began work on it -- but when I went and change the original, the changes were not reflected -- I closed the document I was working on and re-opened it, just to be sure -- maybe it didn't detect the file had been changed. No difference.  It seems it makes a separate copy from my original and uses that and the only way to update it, is to delete an old imported smart layer, and add in a new one and re-apply all the layer effects to the new layer (or transfer them from the old later before deleting it).  Seems a bit awkward...Shouldn't the smart image allow me to include something externally, and as it is imported, it imports a bit map of the current content sized to the appropriate "frame" for the imported layer?  That's another issue -- can't just copy layer effects -- have to be sure to reapply any cropping or resizing you did to the smart image (presuming the layer can take a zoom level and a mask -- maybe it can't do that either?)...since you can distort it, I would assume so (remember reading that layer effects applied to smart objects were turned off while you distorted layers, or something like that...)...  How does one include dynamic content in a picture at edit time (NOT AT DISPLAY TIME -- this ain't HTML! ;
I am using CS4 in a Mac. Due to lack of space, I transferred all the Pictures folders into a Lacie external hard drive. Now I can search the Lacie with Bridge and find and open any of the Pictures folders. But when I try to search by keyword, they are Not Found. How do I do that?
