Photoshop :: How To Update Smart Image From External TIFF
Jul 21, 2012
I originally want to create some text and add effects to it. But as I add effects or, especially, scale, it, I find I need to go back and change the text image (make lines of the characters wider, change proportions...etc.
So I imported my text as a smart image and began work on it -- but when I went and change the original, the changes were not reflected -- I closed the document I was working on and re-opened it, just to be sure -- maybe it didn't detect the file had been changed. No difference.
It seems it makes a separate copy from my original and uses that and the only way to update it, is to delete an old imported smart layer, and add in a new one and re-apply all the layer effects to the new layer (or transfer them from the old later before deleting it).
Seems a bit awkward...Shouldn't the smart image allow me to include something externally, and as it is imported, it imports a bit map of the current content sized to the appropriate "frame" for the imported layer?
That's another issue -- can't just copy layer effects -- have to be sure to reapply any cropping or resizing you did to the smart image (presuming the layer can take a zoom level and a mask -- maybe it can't do that either?)...since you can distort it, I would assume so (remember reading that layer effects applied to smart objects were turned off while you distorted layers, or something like that...)...
How does one include dynamic content in a picture at edit time (NOT AT DISPLAY TIME -- this ain't HTML! ;

Yesterday I was using Photoshop CS5 and RAW 6.4 (?) in a Windows environment. When editing photographs, I generally open the photo in Camera Raw, make development changes (ie exposure, contrast, etc) and then open the developed image as Smart Object in Photoshop. I then clone, add layers, masks, etc. and then save the final image as a tiff.
Yesterday, I upgraded to Photoshop CS6 and RAW 7.0. Now, when I open my tiff files and Smart Objects in the RAW editor, my exposure, contrast, and black settings are missing (reset to zero). My graduated filter settings are also missing. It seems to me that the embedded sidecar data in the tiff / Smart Object is not being read correctly.
How can I update my old tiff / Smart Objects? Re-developing thousands of photos is impractical.
NOTE: As a side note, I opened a RAW file with xmp data (not stored as a tiff/Smart Object) and had no problems.

Since updating to the 13.02 release of photoshop CS6 extended I have noticed the following modified behavior:
When changing the assigned profile of an image containing smart objects, where the smart objects have previously gone through a color profile conversion - the smart objects will get reconverted to the newly assigned profile.
This was certainly not the behavior of 13.01 and previous versions.
Is this an intentional change? If it is shouldn't it be noted in the release notes?
System info: mac os x 10.6.8

I am archiving numerous historic photographs by scanning the originals as high-resolution TIFF files. I need to rotate the scanned images slightly in Photoshop for presentation/archiving purposes but I am worried about losing some image quality.
To maintain loss less images, is it necessary to open my TIFF images as "Smart Objects" before rotating them? If so, this increases my file size many-fold on saving. Is there a way to maintain the approximate size of my original TIFF file? I am working in Photoshop CS4, Windows 7 64-bit.

I have a stack of screenshots to maintain, where what changes most often is the release information: so, I've made a separate .psd with the header and used File > Place to add it as a smart object. What I'm not having any luck with, is changing that single .psd file and seeing the update ripple through to all the screenshots.

A file with smart objects. Whe I double click on the icon of the smart object a new filke opens with te content of the smat object.
After editing I choose to close and CC asks if I want to save the file. This is exactly like CS6 does but now in CC I am aked for a place on disk to save and the content of the original file is not updated. Is this normal behaviour or am I missing something?

I have CS5 Production suite with CS5 12.0.4 loaded. Windows XP 32bit. There are two patches at this link: URL.....
The patch is for version 12.0.5 or 5.1.1. When unzipping it is looking for a 12.0.5 file and it cannot find it since I only have 12.0.4 and there is no newer file when updating. When I do unzip the file and run the installer, I get Installing 12.0.5 then... There was an error installing this update. Error Code: U44M21218.

I get it. I know I need to tell Lightroom that it's "this" specific catalog that I want to be working on while being away from my external hard drive. But, just so I understand the logic: I have to opne Lightroom with the external hard drive connected and then, ejected it so I could smart previews that I've previsoulsy build. There's no way for me just to turn on my computer, away from my external hard drive, and work on smart previews? So, I guess that this my real questions: If I make a copy of the catalog from my external hard drive onto my desktop, and I tell my computer to work with this catalog while away from external hard drive, will this clash everything up?

Working in the CC3D features, I am constantly making changes to my bump map. Every time I step-backwards, or make a significant change to the bump texture (smart object?), CC auto-saves the layer. This specific file is a very very large document (3 gigs in the bump texture layer alone), and the 3D layer has lots of lights and is very complex.
This auto-refresh/update really bogs down the time that it would take me to make my changes. I have a very fast machine (I know it's fast, I dont need to list my specs), and I have all shadows disabled.
How do I disable linked smart-object auto-update/refresh?

I would like to take my existing photo's on an internal drive and move them to an external drive. I would like to leave my catalogue where it is on my internal drive. I would then like to use smart previews to allow me to edit my photo's with or without the external drive connected and have the photo's automatically sync'd when the external drive is re-connected.

I recently converted to an iMac and CS6 from PC/CS5. In addition to the Mac OS missing some key file selection tools (like shift select for a range of files), I am having a big problem with thumbnail. I recently sent a file to be printed that was edited in CS6 on the iMac. The files were stored on an external hard drive connected direclty to the iMac. The file I got from the printer did not match the image I sent. I traced the problem to the fact that when using the Save-as function, the thumbnail was not updated.
I was able to replicate this problem at will. As an experiment, I moved the file onto the internal hard drive and tried again. This time the thumbnail did update.

I am cleaning up the Hard Drive on my Mac G4. My scanned images are taking a great portion of the 80 Gig drive. I finished clearing my external drive by removing nearly 60 gigs of images by storing them on DVD. I will do the same for the Mac drive.
My trouble is that all my images are stored in TIFF format which takes up enormous space no matter the storage. Since I output images in various sizes, mainly prints, to 30 x 40 inches, I need a master image archived in the best format for such. However, I do not want to fill my drives, or DVD, with large files. Code:

It's my understanding that a change made to a disconnected smart preview will automatically update the main database when connected to the drive containing the photo and database. Mine doesn't seem to work automatically. After reconnecting i have to save the metadata for the changed files on the version of Lightroom with the samrt previews and then read the metadata on the primary version of Lightroom. Do both versions of Lightroom need smart previews installed? Should I use a certain procedure of which i'm not aware? I have an iMac for my main computer and a Mac Book Pro for the remote computer.

The management of the importation of externally linked images still has the problem in previous versions.
1) You can't import more than one picture at a time, externally connected simultaneously in the document.
2) If you move the picture within it, in a new folder, there is the possibility of assigning the new path to more 'photos at the same time but only one at a time.
So if I have 100 photos to be updated with the new path I have to do with each photo. While it would be much more logical to assign the same path to more 'selected photos.

I have CS4 on Mac, and CS5 on PC I searched but there are soooo many results and I tried several of the suggestions I found for compressing, none worked.
Here's my challenge. I've got this image, as you can see it is solid white, and solid black only. This is going in some kind of program that needs it to be 200 PPI AND only12Kb or less AND if has to be a tif.
My dad works there and he sent me a file that is 10.8 Kb, PPI, and is 7.9" x 3.5", and it was (Bitmap)
So I changed the information and when I save it, the smallest I can get it to be is ~20Kb.
What I've tried so far:
Save for web as PNG with 2 colors, reopen it, and save that as .tif.
Change it to Grayscale, then save it with JPEG
Bitmap and Compressed with LZW
Bitmap and Compressed with ZIP
Bitmap and Compressed with NONE
I even tried saving it as .25"x.125" but the file size stayed about the same.
Should I be using another program or is there a way to do this in Photoshop?

I've created a mono, bitmapped image approx 400px square. Then saved the file.
If I go to 'get info' (I'm on an Apple Mac), it says the file size is 97k.
If I open the file in P'shop (CS5.5) and go to 'Image Size', it says the file is 19.2k.

I've placed a logo in my InDesign file that I saved out of Photoshop. It appear blurry when in InDesign and I do have it set to high image quality display so that isn't the issue. It is also set as CMYK and I haven't resized it after saving from Photoshop.
I tried saving a jpg so it would be crisper but then I have a white box behind it when placed in the InDesign file.I need to send it to print but can't let it go until I'm sure it won't print like a blurry mess.

I am trying to resize a logo so that it looks crisp and sharp on Facebook and on mobile devices, but I'm having trouble. My file is a .png file and is 72 dpi (resized for web and devices in photoshop). It is 400x400 pixels.
I use [URL]... (similar to tweetdeck or hootsuite) to send posts to Facebook and Twitter. The image looks good on screen when I look at facebook, but not when you look at it on a mobile phone.

I am using PSE 12 as an external editor for Aperture. When I ask to use an external photo editor, Aperture creates a .tiff file in my Aperture folder, launches PSE 12 and tells it to edit that .tiff file. This all works great. When I am done editing in PSE 12, I ask it to save the file and it saves it back to the original Aperture folder with a .tif extension. I can instead say "save as" and then it suggests the file name with a .tif extension. When I correct the extension to .tiff it warns me that I'm going to overwrite the file (exactly what I want!). I say yes and then I find out that PSE did not overwrite the file, but wrote it as a .tif file anyway. I have to go to the folder, delete the .tiff file and rename the .tif file to .tiff and then everything is fine - but what a hassle.

I am working on a project that requires saving my image files as uncompressed tiff files and then saving another copy using LZW compression and being stored on a different drive. I am scanning a large quantity of herbarium specimens one after the other and then saving these files on two different drives.
Because I am working on a Windows pc it defaults to saving the file as the same type and in the same place as the previous one. As a matter of efficiency I just save the file in the proper form for whatever drive I was last on then save the next one in the form it needs to be for the other drive - alternating back and forth.
My question is: If I save the original scan as an LZW compressed file first and then "save as" a second copy as an uncompressed Tiff. Is there any loss in image quality saving a LZW compressed to to an uncompressed form. Should I always save the original file in it's uncompressed form first? Does the file remain totally intact in Photoshop regardless of what gets saved first…

2. Is there a way for removing the previously created smart object?
I mean ... let's say I have a smart object containing four layers. Can I remove smart object from these layers?
