Photoshop :: Image Flattening In CS 4

Nov 28, 2012

I am loosing details in an image when I try to save, flatten or merge visible.  The top layer is a colored layer that I have used the dissolve blend mode to apply to the layer below.  Whenever I flatten it, I loose a lot of the granular detail as well as the color intensity.  Any work arounds?

Photoshop :: Flattening Is Ruining The Image?

Mar 15, 2009

I have an image with three layers.

The 2nd layer is a bg duplicate with a mezzotint added for grain.

The 3rd layer is levels adjustment for contrast.

I flatten the image, and then the image flattens, but becomes a bit lighter and washed out looking.

I flatten an image and the flattened images matches excatly what I was seeing before I flattened it.

Photoshop :: Apply Burn To A Composite Image But Without Flattening?

May 28, 2013

I want to apply Burn to a flattened image, but without flattening. My image consists of several layers, and if I apply Burn to the image layer it doesn't work as well as when applied to the flattened image. But I don't want to flatten the image.

I have uploaded a test image here. It is a crop from a scanned Kodachrome using a Nikon Coolscan V ED which causes flare whenever highlights abut shadows. I can remove the flare fairly effectively on a flattened image with several Burn passes by using a brush size:75, Range: midtones, Exposure: 20%. But if I try it on the unflattened image layer, the results are not as good.

Photoshop :: How Can I Use Auto Color On 2 Layers W/out Flattening The Image?

Apr 14, 2007

I've been taking photos with a homemade lightbox which includes a white background and I typically have to go into photoshop to make some adjustments to get the background pure white. When I'm snapping a photo of an all white object against an all white background, it looks rather nasty if you use the auto color tool.

So from my understanding auto color uses the lightest white and the darkest black and the reason the white/white scenerio doesn't work it because of a lack of black. So to combat this I've been creating a new layer and adding a little black with the rectangular tool and filling it with black. Now, I'd like to be able to delete this second layer once I've used the auto color feature but can't figure out how.

Photoshop :: Saving Image As JPEG Or Merging Layers Or Flattening Lost Set Levels?

Aug 21, 2013

I know the title sounds weird, but I am having trouble keeping my levels from reverting back to their default look when saving as a jpeg or attempting to flatten or merge my layers. I can attach a link to the PDS if you would like to take a look at it. The layer that is losing its levels settings is called "Stars". I don't change my levels often, so I am sure its something I am just missing. The levels are just changes on a single layer, as stated above its the layer called "Stars".

Photoshop :: CS5 / Why Can't See Adjustments After Flattening

Feb 5, 2012

upon flattening layers in CS5, any changes made seem to vanish? This occurs when flattening adjustment layers and has even happened after e.g. Image>Adjustments>Curves (when I close the adjustment dialogue the changes aren't applied.) This doesn't happen on every photo ( I can have two open and it will only be seen on one) and I havene't ever had it happen before. It seems particularly likely to happen after applying HDR toning although I'm sure if there is any connection.

Photoshop :: Flattening Noise

Sep 22, 2008

I recently began creating an image and when it came time to flatten this image, the noise I intentionally put in was softened to a regular glow. I am using CS2 and i used the Layer Style > Outer Glow > and then I added noise with blend mode linear dodge and an opacity of 68%. Anyone know if there is a way I can flatten the image with a way to maintain the noise?

Photoshop :: Flattening All Contrast / Where Are Blacks

Dec 10, 2013

I edit a photograph from a Camera Raw file to high contrast, grainy black and white, then when I try to flatten it or save it, it washes all the contrast out completely. When I try to merge layers, flatten image or cmd+opt+e/cmd+opt+shift+e to a new file it does the same thing. Here's what I've tried to correct the issue:

-I've tried saving it as a PSD file, a TIFF, a JPEG and a BMP file
-I've tried calibrating my monitor (X-Rite i1 Pro)
-I've tried soft proofing on and off (left off for now)
-I've tried resetting my colour settings to import files into the working space as ProPhoto & Adobe RGB 1998
-I've tried setting the import as the calibrated settings for the screen rather than ProPhoto or Adobe RGB 1998
-I've checked that all files (apart from a Dodge/Burn Layer which has to be on Soft Light never affected any files before) were set to normal
-I've tried converting profiles from ProPhoto to Adobe 1998, Adobe 1998 to sRGB
-I've tried going to preferences in User>Me>Library>Preferences>Adobe Photoshop CS6 Settings and manually resetting all relevant references
-I've tried flushing and resetting all preferences
-I've tried to uninstall and install Photoshop SC6 from scratch
-I've tried restarting the image from the raw file with the new install of CS6, done all the edits again manually...

And it still does the same thing. Whenever I have adjustment layers on my file and have some contrast added that I want to save, it flattens the whole image out..The last attachment is what it looks like in photoshop and another with my colour settings for the (calibrated) screen

Photoshop :: CS6 Randomly Flattening PSD Files?

Mar 13, 2013

I have been using CS5 for months, but just recently started a new job which uses CS6. I am working on a company laptop running Windows 7. I have never seen this problem before and could find nothing online about others having this issue.

What's happening is that I save a .psd file the same way I've done for the last 8 years, but every once in a while, the .psd files are flattened the next time I open them. This has happened 4 times now.

The first time, I wrote it off as a user error. I saved a backup .psd file and continued on. The second time was the same file, but I had the backup file which I was able to revert to an older version and restart from there.

Edit: I should also add that the third and fourth files were different files from the one used in the first two instances.

The third time, I was testing it. I saved a backup file and then continued to work on the file. I would save it, close the file, and reopen it to see if it was flattened. The 10th or 11th time I did this, the file was indeed flattened. The fourth time this has happened was on a brand new file I had started at the end of the day yesterday, and this morning it is flattened.

I really don't want to have to keep a secondary .psd file updated as a backup for every single project I work on.

Photoshop :: Layer Styles Resize On Flattening

Mar 28, 2008

The problem is about the layer style blending options in Photoshop. I like to work in high resolution big canvases when I paint, and once in a while I like to use the style options on some layers, like... drop shadow, outer glow, stroke, color overlay and all that stuff. ..But everytime I flatten, resize or rasterize the image the layer style either changes or dissapears!

Here's an example:
In the first image I've used bevel&emboss, outer glow, and drop shadow.
In the second image it's how it looks like when I've flattened or resized the image.

Anyone know how to solve this?

I've tried to..
flatten all layers at once
flatten the layers one by one
merge visible
merging only the comission info-layer with an empty one below it
rasterizing it, or rasterizing all the text before merging it
converting it to a smart object before merging
merging everything but the commission info-layer, and then flatten it

Strangly the Layer 9 that has drop shadow to it doesn't get affected or changed when I merge/flatten/resize.

I haven't touched the settings. Lately I've also been having some problems with layers set to multiply. In some cases they can't be merged properly without looking weird. (Though resizing and saving for.jpg works fine).

Photoshop :: Merging / Flattening Layers With Different Blending Modes?

Feb 4, 2013

I want to be able to take a document, that has multiple layers, inside of multiple groups with various layers having various blending modes applied to them and from within that document, select simply two of those layers, one with a Divide blending mode and the other layer Normal, merge those two layers, but have the visual appearance of the merged layer maintain the visual appearance of what the layers looked like before I merged them.

Everytime I attempt this, Ps takes my Divide layer, reverts it back to Normal and then merges the layers, thus changing the appearance of what it was before the merge. This is not the desired result.

I understand that when you flatten an entire series of layers, it applies all the blending modes and maintains the visual appearance. Is there a way to do this with just two layers instead of all the layers?

Photoshop :: Flattening Layer Styles Whilst Preserving Blend Mode / BLUR

Oct 16, 2007

I do a lot of work for TV and as such have to often provide flattened layered art to broadcasters. I flatten most layers and flatten layer styles as well.

Question: is there any way to preserve a layer style blend mode when flattening i.e. I have some rasterized text with an Outer glow. The outer glow has a Linear Burn blend mode (or similar).

Is there a way I can merge this layer complete with style to a flat layer and PRESERVE the way it looks? Often I try this and it looks different (obviously because there is a blend mode being implemented with the layer style.

Any pointers how to get around this? I use CS2 by the way.

Another one - I often whack stuff into After Effects and put on an adjustment layer at the top with a gaussian blue (so it blurs everything below). Is there a way to do this in Photoshop i.e. an adjustment layer placed at the top of the layer stack with a BLUR? Any workarounds people know of or is this just something I can do in After Effects?

Paint.NET :: Save As PNG Without Flattening

Mar 24, 2010

I was looking for a way to quickly save as png without flattening. I work using the pdn format but I save to png 32 bit. It would be nice to have an Export feature in the file menu separate from the save options. Basically just hit export and it brings up the normal dialogs for saving but just saves the image leaving me with the pdn as I continue working.

I'm sure you've realized that not everyone wants to work in png and destroy their layers just because they need to upload for the web really quick. At the moment (as you know) when working on a pdn you have to do save as, select png from the file types and hit save, hit okay on the dialog, click flatten, now you have a png file with a new name if you changed it, then hit ctrl+z to get your layers back, press ctrl+s to save and since it has layers it pops up to save as pdn, rename back to old name and save. It's a lot of steps.

So an alternative would be click Export and if you've exported before it already has the name and file type you want filled in ready to overwrite your last export then click save have that dialog pop up for the bit type and click okay and you're done.

It would be even simpler if you merged the save dialog into the image setting dialog then you could hit Export and hit an export button and be done in two clicks. A lot more work though at a minor usability gain.

AutoCad :: Flattening And Setting Everything To Elevation Zero

May 2, 2012

make a drawing to be flattened and set to elevation zero.

I do have the flatten command from express tools, and that works only to make everything to 2d, but i need a simple script routine to set all objects to elevation zero.

This is my current methodology

1. select objects
2. flatten
3. select same objects
4. explode
5. select same objects
6. explode
7. select same objects again
8. In property's, adjust Z axis to 0.

I fear that this is too long and bulky, and sometimes it wont work.

I also fear that any lisps routines are completely out of my league as i never used them before and my company never really had a need for them, but i am willing to give them a shot if it means that they will save me some time.
