Photoshop Elements :: Enlarge Image Maintain Resolution?
Dec 9, 2013
Photoshop Elements 10. I want to enlarge an image and maintain 300 dpi resolution. If I enlarge the image the resolution automatically lowers. I need to keep the res at 300. How do I accomplish this?

Problem: How to enlarge (100 times) image of multiple intersecting low resolution contour lines wile avoiding pixelation?
Simple answer: It can't be done.
Second thoughts: Well, under some circumstances it can be done... sort of. For example if lines are orthogonal to begin with then simple re-sample to nearest neighbor algorithm will do fine. If lines are simple enough, then tracing them with pen tool and recreating the original lines at higher resolution by stroking the paths with a brush will do also. Also if original lines are smooth and thick enough then some re-sampling, blurring and leveling can work (anisotropic diffusion filter may work) but will produce smoothing artifacts at corners.
From what I can see the problem boils down to creatively converting the original lines to vectors (paths / shapes) and avoiding the whole messiness of raster anti-aliasing. But here we face additional problems: Adobe trace engine is not smart enough to recognize geometric shapes, intersecting lines, straight edges, orthogonal lines and mathematical curves - just try to trace a font and you will end up with a baggy monster. Additionally, it appears that in Photoshop center-line trace is not possible and you are limited to outlines.

Once I transfer image files from the camera to the Organizer (PSE10), they are listed in the information panel window as having a resolution of 180. I use the printer more than the internet for these files, so I really want the resolution to be 300 or above, and would like to set a preference to that effect. I know that I can resize them individually, or by a group, but I'd like to get the resolution set properly in the first place rather than adding yet antoher setp in my post processing efforts. I am assuming that the resolution is set by PSE10 because I can't find anywhere in the camera's (Canon Powershot SX40 HS) user manual that mentions that the camera sets a resolution. Is there some way that I can adjust the resolution that PSE10 assigns the images when they are imported into the Organizer? I'm using Windows 7 with 12GB Ram.

I have an image (1200mm x 1200mm) very sharp and crisp. (A photo that i have worked on and has lots of detail) I drag this image onto a canvas size of 150mm x150mm - and the image loses all of its sharpness. It is not apparent until i zoom in to see the detail. (PSE10) I'm sure that there is a box somewhere to tick..........but i cannot find it.
when i drag it over, it is still the large size, so i grab the grips/handles and shrink to fit, then it pixelates?

I realize the nature of my question maybe asking the impossible, but I have a low res image I downloaded from the internet, placed in an InDesign page, blew it up and printed it out. I was going for the distressed look that it has, it looks ok when I print it out considering it's low res and I blew it up fairly large. However, it's a little too pixelated to look professional when printed. Are they any tricks or things I can do to make it look higher res for print. I've attached the image as well as a screenshot of the InDesign file so you can see it in context.

I am a Photoshop newbie and I have a series of graphics (all 72dpi from a website) that I would like to print in 300dpi. Is it possible to take a 72dpi .jpeg or .gif file and easily convert it to a higher resolution printable graphic? If Photoshop can't do it, is there any type of program that can?

I've got a hi-res tiff image (5031x3579 px) which I need to use as a background on a very large print (2500 mm x2500 mm, 300 dpi). I placed the original image in InDesign and had to enlarge it by approx 800% to fit the canvas. Effective dpi ended up at 35dpi. This, no suprise, looks **** when viewed at 50-100%, so I thought maybe it would be better to resize the image in photoshop before placing it in InDesign. Well, I did do that and ended up with an image with a huge filesize (2,5 Gb) before saving it as a tiff again. I noticed that many of the save as options didn't come up, only tiff, Large image format and native PS. I still dont know what the final file size will be... still waiting for it to finish processing.
The method I used for enlargement was: Image size -> resample - bicubic smoother (best for enlargement) - in three steps, 200% up - 200% up - 150% up.
What is the best way using photoshop CS6? I know I will loose quality, but want to minimize the apparent loss the best way.

I'm wanting to put up some pictures in my "study" that are influencing, read it in a magazine, and I remember these. Looking on the web it seems everyone "wished they'd come up with this ad campaign".
I'd like to enlarge them to A4 size as well, just to put them in glass frames, I don't know how legal this is but I can't find anywhere that sells them on the web, or who actually made them ?
I don't really understand the enlarging process

I was sent an image from an i pad. It is only 320x240, 40kb and 72ppi. I tried in CS6 to enlarge it but anything over the initial image size is deeply blurred using Image or canvas in Image dropdown.
Can this be resolved to enlarge to 4x6, 5x7,8x10 with in CS6?

I'm Trying to make a Headshot. Using my (Epson Perfection 1260)Scanner, I scanned a Back and White(4"x6") Sharp Image Photo at (1200 dpi) and enlarged it to(7"x 9").
Using PhotoShop I Sharpend the Image. I printed at (1440 dpi) using Glossy Photo Paper with my "Epson Stylus Photo 750" Printer. The Image has turned out Grainy and not very clear as the original although it did manage to pickup up detail like lint on the photograph LOL.
I tried enlarging the image in PS and increased the amount of Pixels, instead of during the scanning process but that resulted in poorer quality image.
The Photos that remain the same size as the original turn out excellent photo quality images.
How do I enlarge a photo from a smaller image and maintain almost the same quality as the original? It seems I am losing resolution somewhere along the way.

I need to prepare an image for professional printing and I want to retain as much quality as is possible.
The final file needs to be a 300ppi sRGB jpg.
The print needs to have a large white border so I am 'placing' the image into a new file where the canvas serves as the border.
In other words, I'm placing an 8x10 image into a new 12X14 file.
My question is: how do ensure that the quality of the original 8x10 image is not affected?
My current workflow is as follows:
1. Save the 8x10 as a 300ppi, 16bit, prophoto tif.
2. Create a new file with the dimensions of 12x14, 300ppi, 16bit, prophoto.
3. Place the 8x10 image into this file.
4. Save for web & devices at JPEG, 100 Quality, Convert to sRGB

hat is the best way to resize (reduction) an image and maintain the image sharpness. The image I have is a high resolution 500 x 500 pixel logo with a text which I have the Adobe Illustrator (AI) vector file.
I need to resize the image to as small as 130 x 40 pixels and export to gif.
I have tried the following methods:Photoshop Resize > Resample Image > Bicubic Sharper (best for reduction)Create a 130 x 40 pixel Photoshop file and copied object from AI to Photoshop as a smart object and export as gifCreate a 130 x 40 pixel AI file and export to gif . However, I tried to view the image from my mobile phone (iPhone), it is not sharp even though I have created from the vector ai file.
I research on the internet and find out that I can actually create a double size image and use CSS to control (divided dimension by 2) so that the sharpness can be maintained. However, I do not have control of the site html/css hence I can't use the method.
Any other way to resize (reduction) an image and maintain the sharpness.

While the Version Sets in my current catalog are collapsed, the version sets in the Catalog on the new computer have all become 'expanded'; this is unacceptable to me, as many of the pairs that are stacked as Version Sets have become separated. While all of the Version Sets are "tagged", it looks as though many of the photos in the expanded sets are without tags. Problem #2 is that the hierarchy of Keyword Tags that I currently use is lost when the Catalog is restored in the new computer's Organizer. I currently use about 500 Keyword Tags, divided into 6 categories (i.e. People, Places, Locations, Events, Other, Bird Species). On the new computer, the tags are alphabetized without being separated into their 6 categories. I currently have close to 30,000 items in my Catalog, and have spent hundreds, perhaps thousands, of hours editing (and saving both the original and edited files as Version Sets), tagging and captioning all of my photos. I followed the instructions previously published in "Photoshop Elements Help" regarding backup to an external hard drive and restoring the files in an empty Organizer on the new computer. I also used the "Save Keyword Tags To File" command before the backup. I do have the intact "current" Catalog on my old computer, complete with tags and captions, collapsed version sets, and a list of Keyword Tags organized in the Hierarchy that has worked best for me.
