Photoshop :: Color - SRGB Washing Out In Windows Apps
May 19, 2009
I'm having a color management issue. I use CS3 and the Spyder2Express color calibration system. I presently have my system (Windows) set to the Spyder2Express profile found under the display properties. I have Photoshop set to sRGB under edit-color settings. I am for some reason suddenly (in the past few days) having big issues with editing the photo in Photoshop to look as I want, then it experiencing a large color shift when viewed in any Windows application or uploaded to the web (IE7). Colors look very dull and washed out compared to Photoshop. From my experience, the opposite has been true if working in Adobe RGB and failing to save to sRGB before uploading the image to the web - the images wash out. So, why are my images washing out if working in sRGB as my Photoshop color space to begin with? Any Photoshop + windows experts combined that can help? I am pulling my hair out. I need to upload photos to my blog (I am a photographer) and they look super dull compared to how they view in Photoshop!
I did an export of an image from DNG to JPG in LR4. Funny thing is, the JPG suddenly appears with a washed out look. It looks the same in Develop and Print modules also. Â It gets even funnier, because when I use Finder to check the photo, the preview of the image is fine. I also opened the image from Finder in Photoshop CS5 and it is fine there. I also opened the image in PSCS5 from LR4 with "Edit In" and again the image in Photoshop is fine. So this appears to be a view issue in LR4. I did not print out the washed out photo but I suspect it would print out as it appears in LR4. Â I've done some other image exports from DNG to JPG with other images and they do not have this problem but those were black&white converted images. However, I did check doing an export of another color image with the same result as the problem image. Here are screen captures of the DNG and the exported JPG (I was going to upload the exported JPG, but like I said it appears fine in Finder):
There's been an interesting conversation going around my office for the last few days about switching to all Microsoft devices in the near future. A look around the AD site shows all the apps for the App Store and Google Play but not Windows Phone. I use a bunch of AD apps on my iPad and iPhone that are a "must have" now. A quick Google search brings up a bunch of articles but I haven't seen anything definitive from AD. Does the AD apps (most importantly SketchBook Mobile, Autodesk 360, ForceEffects) are coming out for that platform anytime in the future?

I have alot of paper that I want to reduce & eliminate, I have a bunch of certificates, magazine/newspaper clippings that I have from high school & college to scan & would like to know what color settings would be best. Â I also have a bunch of brochures, other odd papers, receipts, & handwritten notes. Â I am using an Epson perfection photo 4490 flatbed scanner, on a mac running lion 10.7.5. Â I would also like to know what would be the best resolution to use. Â I read a little about bit depth, & from what I gather, the human eye can only see so many colors, & going with bigger color depths is good where one has to do alot of editing. Â most of these items are for records & archives, & maybe to be able to print from the scans, so I can throw out some of my paper. Also, when I scan in Adobe RGB, would it be best to use 48 bit depth to go with the fuller color? & when I use sRGB use 24 bit depth?
Question for you. I'm really trying hard to develop a great color work flow. I realized after my new discovery I didn't to proof my photoshop files under Blurb's cmyk profile any longer. I went under Proofing and selected the calibration I have done with my X-rite colormunki. I realize under custom is the whole array of choices from the default Apple RGB to selecting the calibration colormunkit profile I do every two weeks with my X-Rite Colormunki. I just realized there are other settings I can select as well. One being the legacy Macintosh RGB Gamma 1.8. then Internet Standard RGB (SRGB), and finally Monitor RGB. the second of first choice
This question has gotten more intense for me. Since I'm working in Photoshop on files for my website should I set the monitor to Internet Standard RGB (sRGB) when I'm color correcting and adjusting my files for the web. Also should I go under custom and select the X-Rite Colormunki profile? Also since I'm going to only use SRGB files for Blurb books and not use Blurb's Icc profile any longer. Should I also select the Internet Standard RGB (sRGB) as for my monitor while adjusting my files for Blurb books or leave it as one of the other two legacy Macintosh RGB Gamma 1.8 etc?
Now again I'm wondering when I'm printing files for my Epson printers should I select legacy Macintosh RGB Gamma 1.8 or monitor RGB. Also should I choice the X-rite calibrated profile. I know when I'm in the Epson driver I go and select the printer profile for the printing paper I will be using.
I just installed CS3 in Windows Vista Ultimate x64 on my PC and I have my working color space set as sRGB. The color is dull when opening documents in any Adobe application with the working color space set to sRGB. The color is fixed if I change the working profile to my monitor profile which is "Monitor RGB - Dell 2407WFP-HC"
When in the "Monitor RGB - Dell 2407WFP-HC" profile whenever I open an existing file Photoshop alerts me that the embedded color profile is different than my working profile (all of my existing files are managed as sRGB and on my previous computer the sRGB profile looked perfect.)
Photoshop I could theoretically live with but the same problem occurs in Acrobat and changing the "Working Profile" in Acrobat has no change on how the sRGB managed PDF is being displayed. The same PDF will look fine on another computer.
How do I get sRGB color to display correctly in Adobe applications and not look dull and muted?
Additional Information: The problem is still prevalent when accessing the computer with Remote Desktop which leads me to believe it has nothing to do with my monitor or the video card I am using.
I have both PSE 10 and LR 5.2, but am not that comfortable with LR yet. I took a new photo and brought it into LR for a few edits, then did "Edit In" to finish the edits in PSE. The file was a Tiff at that point. I went to use the "Touch Up Scratches and Blemishes" tool, and it wouldn't allow me to use it until I got the prompt to convert from 16 bit color to 8 bit, which I did. Then did a bunch of other edits in PSE, and did a "Save As" to a JPG file. On the "Save As" dialog, the only option I had for "Color" was a checkbox that said "ICC Profile: ProPhoto RGB". Left that checked.  After saving the file, I looked at the file properties on the "Details" tab. It shows the "Color representation" as "Uncalibrated" and the "Photometric interpretation" as "RGB". Normally when I don't do the LR edits first, the "Color representation" is "sRGB" and the "Photometric interpretation" is blank.  So the questions: Is what I did OK? The final jpg file appears OK when I took at it in Windows, but wonder if I am going to have a problem somewhere else. Did I lose detail in converting from 16 bit to 8 bit to do the edits in PSE? Should I have done something different along the way, assuming I wanted to do my final edits in PSE?
When I export RAW files, specifying that I want the output to be in sRGB color space the resulting files have the Adobe RGB color space. The same is true if I specify I want them in ProPhoto. Is this a bug? I have done it successfully in other versions of Lightroom, but not in 4.3.
I'm aiming to take RAW photo files, edit them in a wide color space, and when posting them to the web, save them as sRGB. Â My workspace is as follows: Â I open RAW files in Photoshop via ACR as 16-bit ProPhoto smart objects. When I finish editing them, I use "Save for Web" with the "Convert to sRGB" and "Embed Color Profile" boxes checked. Â Photoshop and Bridge tell me the profile in photos saved as such is sRGB as expected. When I upload to a site like flickr, however, the metadata says the photo is still in ProPhoto. See an example here: [URL]...If I use "Convert to Profile" and change it to sRGB, then upload to flickr, the metadata says the photo is in sRGB, as it should be.
When I export vector graphics to RGB/sRGB and open the pdf in another software (like Serif Page Plus, Adobe etc.), the color values are variying a little bit.
For example, my gray value of a logotype in Corel was 118, 115, 113. Now I export as pdf (many logical!! setting of CM tried!!!), any other software that opens the document - also CORRECT CM settings - values are 117, 115, 112. --- The same light variations nearly anytime with any RGB color. Not possible to create vector pdfs of logos for my clients correctly this way! Really bad.Â
Instead of starting a discussion about Color Management Settings, could any professional, maybe a Corel member check this behaviour in practice and give me a feed-back!? - In the best case let me know the complete settings for Corel CM and pdf Export to get the RGB pdf export done correctly.Â
(I am currently using X4, but know that same behaviour from X3 and passed again hours to try really all reasonable CM and export combinations, at least I think so. Windows7 and WindowsXP)
With LR4 and a Nikon D7000.When i import that raw in lightroom, the first view of the picture is fine then LR do its "loading" and bang, the picture changes. As RAW is not supposed to be affected by the colorspace My understanding is the embeded preview in the raw is sRGB and LR work in a different colorspace. If i change the camera for AdobeRGB, i dont have the problem and what i see from the camera to the preview then the final result is consistent. But this cause me another problem because i shoot RAW+jpeg, the backup JPEG saved in the other memory card is now AdobeRGB as well and less compatible as everybody knows, for web, print labatory, etc... Â I dont have in LR any automatic developement settings. My screen is calibrated with a Spyder 3. Â I'm feeling stuck in the corner as i want by backup JPEG in sRGB and n o colorshift in LR.
I'm not that big into filters, but this particular set looks useful and is only $32. I can't seem to find any reviews on the product, so I thought I'd take a shot to see if anyone has experimented with these and see how their results turned out.
I have a set of JPEGs that have been stripped of their color profiles (AdobeRGB). Lightroom assumes that they are sRGB images and displays them incorrectly. Is there any function in the program that will let me embed the correct (AdobeRGB) profile to the photos, preferably without re-compressing them?
hi. why is there a significant difference in color temp from working in raw/pscs and viewing the finished pictures in ex. windows diasshow. The temp. seems to be much warmer in windows. The raw converting im doing makes me unsure when viewing afterwards in windows.wich one can i rely on when going to my local printingshop.
When I switch between Photoshop 6 and other apps, particularly Chrome, I have to actually click the Photoshop icon, sometimes several times to get the system to focus on PS and show those menus. Clicking the window, which works for every other app, doesn't seem to work here. I'm on Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and using the latest PS6.
I'm getting the EPIC_APP will not launch problem trying to launch Acrobat, so I try to launch Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Flash, etc., get the License Agreement screen, accept it, it goes away, and nothing more happens (incl. no indication in Task Manager that it has started). I have a working internet connection (obviously, or I wouldn't be able to submit this question), but could it be a firewall issue anyway? If not, what gives? It's a fresh install of Adobe MC CS3 on a Toshiba Sattellite L305-S5933 running 32 bit Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 w/ 3GB of RAM. Please help: I'm trying to use Acrobat to edit my 1040 and, obviously, time is of the essence!
I have recently installed the Adobe CS, and am running OS 10.3.3. I have two USB printers, one epson and one HP, that print fine with all other apps and are in my printer list and so on... But when I go to try to print from Photoshop, in the print dialog window, instead of my default printer being selected, the drop down menu says "No printer selected". When I go to try to select a printer from that drop down menu, my two printers are not there, and instead the only options are "Edit Printers list..." and "check for printer updates..".
I have tried everything I could think of... Like I said the printers are installed and working great in other apps, and the same menu in other applications shows both printers and lets me select them. Any suggestions? Is there a plugin or something that I need to put in a specific Adobe folder? Why don't the Adobe programs see the printers? Here's another weird thing: Adobe Acrobat does see the printers. And that is how I have to print my photoshop docs, save as PDF and then print.
When working on large documents, the cursor freezes for 8-10 sec when I switch from PS to another app/finder. It also happens when I switch back to PS. 8-10 sec. of complete freeze out until everything starts working again.

Why is Photoshop CC displaying images 25% smaller than my other applications? If I open a 72 ppi square pixel aspect image in Photoshop, I have to zoom to 125% for it to be the same size on screen as in my browser or any other image viewer. Photoshop reads the correct pixel sizes, but displays it smaller. Â I design and build websites and have been using Photoshop for over 15 years and haven't noticed this until CC. If I save the images and build out the site, or even just drag the image into a browser and then overlay that browser window above the Photoshop window to see both images side by side, I can clearly see a 25% difference in size. Â If I zoom in Photoshop to 125%, then the sizes match. So, the problem is when designing a website, everything looks smaller in photoshop. Then when I build it out, everything is way too big. Â My browsers are definitely at 100% zoom and I can open the image in any other image viewer at 100% and the affect is the same. Is there a setting that can be adjusted in Photoshop to correct this?
PSE 6 program won't open from the start menu or Windows Explorer and the editor and organizer apps won't open from Windows Explorer. All the files are listed in WE and not empty. This happened recently after I have used the program a few years. Do I need to reinstall the program? If so, will the catalog have to be recreated? There are more than 7000 photos in the catalog. I am using Windows 7 Home Premium.
I installed PS CC this morning and it's only seeing 4gb RAM. I opened it and closed it a couple times and it saw my 16gb once. I thought all was well until I closed it and opened it again and it was back down to 4gb.  Here's my system info according to LR 5:
Lightroom version: 5.0 [907681] Operating system: Windows 7 Business Edition Version: 6.1 [7601] Application architecture: x64 System architecture: x64 Logical processor count: 4 Processor speed: 3.9 GHz Built-in memory: 16345.3 MB Â Here's my info from CS6 64bit.
Adobe Photoshop Version: 13.1.2 (13.1.2 20130105.r.224 2013/01/05:23:00:00) x64 Operating System: Windows 7 64-bit Version: 6.1 Service Pack 1 System architecture: AMD CPU Family:15, Model:4, Stepping:3 with MMX, SSE Integer, SSE FP, SSE2, SSE3 Physical processor count: 4 Processor speed: 3906 MHz Built-in memory: 16345 MB Free memory: 9522 MB Memory available to Photoshop: 14682 MBÂ Â Here's my info according to PS CC:

I just installed CC last night, so I haven't had a lot of time to work with the CC apps yet... Bridge has been working fine since the start for LOTS of sorting and tagging images in the last day and a half, and I've opened CameraRAW a handful of times without issue, then this evening I tried to open Photoshop CC for the first time and got a whole lot of strange messages about expired trials and activation problems and other errors and then it crashed... At first I think my internet security software was maybe interfering with Photoshop's attempts to confirm licensing online, but I seem to have gotten that sorted out ... so I no longer get all the weird licensing errors, but right after Photoshop loads I very quickly get the "Photoshop has quit working" error and it crashes. After experiencing this issue I went and tried all my other CC apps and Premiere, Illustrator, InDesign, Bridge all seem fine... just Photoshop is giving me issues.  I already tried "signing out" and signing back in to CC apps.  I am using CC on Windows 7 pro. I previously have had Master Collection CS3 and CS5 installed on this computer... but I de-installed these entirely before installing any new apps. I had some errors in de-installing CS3 so I used the Adobe Cleaner Tool to ensure that CS5 and CS3 had been completely de-installed before starting fresh with CC. I don't expect this previous software is causing any issues, but I figured I'd give a complete account of my situation.  Problem signature:  Problem Event Name:         APPCRASH  Application Name:         Photoshop.exe  Application Version:         14.0.0.0  Application Timestamp:         5176451b  Fault Module Name:         atiocl64.dll [code]...
I get the 'can't open the app because PowerPC apps are no longer supported. I went to support and ran the script that was recommended. And I confirmed that com.apple.LaunchServices.plist is no longer in my pref file.
I'm using PS CS, and have been designing some web graphics. Got them looking good, and loaded them into Fireworks to slice up, and the colour and contract now look faded. It's the same in Imageready and Corelpaint too. Back in PS, the image looks perfect. What's going on that I don't know about?
I just "upgraded" from Photoshop CS6 to Photoshop CC. Â How do I get all my apps, plug ins, actions, automate apps, brushes, etc. from Photoshop CS6 onto/into the proper folders in Photoshop CC so I can use them in CC? Â My OS is Mac OSX 10.7.5.
(Win) workstations with full CS6 or CC and C4D. If you own (or freelance at places with) decent spec HP Z820 20-30+GB RAM etc would you normally have AI, PS, AE & Cinema 4D open at the same time on Windows?
If yes, do you often get windows redraw issues? do you change your CPU, RAM allocation etc settings for the task you're doing or just leave it the same as you would if you were just running AE & a web browser,
What the difference is between RGB and sRGB? Any website links that explain the whole colours/printing side of things in detail that would be handy as need to touch up on this knowledge.
Have a folder containing 100+ JPEG image files, another folder containing the same files as 16 bit TIFF with layers, and a third folder containing the TIFF files flatened. All are in the Adobe RGB color space. I want to convert these same files to sRGB to use in a slide show. What are the steps to batch process this change? Is it using an action? Should I start with the TIFF folder or use the JPEG folder?
I'm having a bizarre, when I try to convert any color profile from Adobe RBG to sRBG to ensure better viewing colors on the web. I actually go through the process twice to confirm that I've done it -- I convert the image's color profile to sRBG under the "Edit" drop-down menu, then I double check to make sure that sRGB is selected when I go through the "Save for Web" option under the "File" drop-down menu. The converted images still look muddy when posted online, and it always puzzled me why when I open them up again in PS, it tells me that the image has no Color Profile, and I need to assign it one. I would just ignore the message, thinking it didn't apply because I had already done it twice previously. The other day, I opened up one of my twice-converted sRGB images and when prompted, assigned the profile to sRBG a THIRD time. Finally the image came out perfectly on the web. Now whenever I make that third sRGB conversion on web images, the profile remains permanent. This just makes no sense to me. I should only have to convert the profile once.
