Photoshop :: Changing Default Global Light Angle
Mar 20, 2009
How can the default angle setting for global light be changed, in Photoshop CS4?
I do not like the 30' but prefer 120' to have the light from top left and shadows bottome right. However, saving as a style does not save the angle, just all the other settings.
I would be grateful for help as I have lots of images I need to prepare for a website that uses my preference in lighting, so would like it to match. At the moment,

I have a PSD that somebody else created and I need to copy certain layers over to another PSD. The problem is when I do that the angle of shadows changes due to them keeping the "use global light" checkbox checked when they added the layer style.
Â
Is there any way of copying those layers to a new PSD and keep the actual angle correct rather than it reverting the default 120° angle.

I imported a photo, selected 3D from the Menu then selected "New Shape from Layer" then "Sphere" and my image is wrapped nicely around the sphere. But the image is too dark. If I try to use a brightness layer or levels to brighten it up, then I no longer have any control over 3D animation of this object. So next I investigate the various 3D lighting options. Point or Spot - too focused, Infinite leaves shadows which for this particular purpose I don't want. I just want a nice even light over the entire sphere. It seems like "Global" light would be the obvious choice but the choice is greyed out.... Any suggestions would be welcome. I find the "help" in Photoshop less than really useful. Help generally tells me that "you can use "X" to do "Y" but never gets around to telling you how to use "X".

We get artwork from outside agencies with color boxes like those shown (CMYK, in percentages of 30, 50 and 100). Their color names may vary, or often the colors aren't in their color palette at all. I am supposed to recolor the boxes with our standard-named, global colors in my own swatch library. Two questions:
1. Is there a way to grab the three cyan boxes (for example), and recolor them with the global Cyan swatch, WITHOUT having the %tint in all three boxes become 100%?
What I do now, over and over in each file we receive: Select the three Cyan boxes, click on the "C" global swatch in my palette, watch them all change to 100%C. Then manually click on the left cyan box and change the tint back to 30%, and for the middle box, change it back to 50%. Etc. for the other colors. This is a PITA, and it just seems like there should be a quicker way.
2. Is there way to then recolor ALL the cyan elements (strokes, fills, gradients) used in the art with the same global cyan swatch, without changing the tints?

I'm using DP7, and working on a logo with 3 different shapes. They all have bevels applied to them (applied at different times and angles). I like having the light angle direction arrow to drag around to see the different effects from different angles but the arrow isn't always visible. What do I need to do to keep it visible, or make it visible? If I hit Ctl+B or Ctl+F the arrow will appear but the selected object will also move to the front or back at the same time. I've tried selecting the object first, then the bevel icon, and sometimes that works and sometimes not, although the outer bevel arrows will be visible. Even when the rotation arrow isn't visible I can change the light angle with the slider but I would prefer the rotational arrow instead.

When using the pen tool a person can create a line by eyeballing its angle. But if you hold down Shift while creating a line the program has default angle settings. I was hoping there are way to create setting profiles, or just plain changing the default setting of the Shift/snap-to option for the pen tool. I am working on HUD layouts and designs and am finding it difficult to concistantly get the angle I need. Eyeballing resaults in varying angles (barely, but I can notice it), but the Shift/snap-to angles are too sharp.

I finish editing my pictures, save as PSD and a 2nd as jpeg. i view the picture in windows live gallery (windows 7 64bit) and it has changed to a dark deep contrast.
I open the jpeg or the PSD file and they both appear as i originally saved them until I select/ click on it. and i get the darker deep contrasted image.
Â
I have tried to have Photoshop elements 9, in preferences set to windows color and I tried it at Adobe no difference.
Jpegs are saved as sRGB but it is affecting all images, fine while editing but when saved and reviewed it changes and when opened i get to different contrasting views of the same image when selected. This is really anoying me as you think your done and it looks completely different when you review it.

My questions is how to prevent the following from happening. I created a layer style drop shadow in a .psd file with the below parameters.
Â
I saved it as an .asl file that I could use later. When I loaded it into a different .psd file later that day some parameters stayed the same but the angle reverted back to 30 degrees from 120 degrees all on its own as shown below.
I just want to know how to keep layer style parameters I saved in an .asl file from reverting back to defaults when loaded in to a new .psd file.
Â
My systems parameters are as follows:
Photoshop CS6 Extend Version 13.0 x64
Mac OSX 10.8.2Â with 705.44 GB used out of 749.3 GB available
The only other software I am running is Safari web browser. This is my first time trying to save a layer style and use it in a different .psd file other than the one I created it in.

How do I rotate an object in Illustrator without chaging the angle of my drop shadow? I have a design that I want to place 2 up on a page and then print. When turn and stack them the shadow has changed its angel in relation to the artwork. I don't see where to lock the drop shadow to the object. Or is it secified a different way?

I've been using Corel Draw! 8 for years and my favorite tool was the angle of rotation. For example, I would select an object, usually a rectangle that has the point of rotation at end of the narrow rectangle. As I rotated it, I could see how much the angle of rotation in degrees is. Therefore I could type a value in the box and the rectangle would rotate some many degrees. Fast forward to my Corel Draw 12. Now when I click on the same object, the box will display what the angle is in degrees already based on the circular angle startingaat the nine o'clock position. I need it to say ZERO and I can't find the setting to set it at zero
what I am drawing is I rotate a narrow rectange and basically creating a dial face for instruments.

I've been trying in vain to change the projection type in my styles editor to 3rd angle and keeping it like that for all future drawings.
It's easy enough to change projection type for an individual drawing by going through Manage > Styles editor > View Preferences, but I'd like all drawings in future to default to 3rd angle. Â I've tried saving the file as a new template (many times) in Templates > Metric but they always default back to 1st angle projection.

Suppose I have an object filled with a linear gradient. This object is the only selected. I just would like to change the angle of the gradient to 25 degrees. So I think I could do:
Â
var doc = app.activeDocument
alert(doc.selection[0].fillColor.angle) // the result is the exact angle of the gradient fill of the selected object. Suppose 12 degrees.
Â
//now the try to change:
doc.selection[0].fillColor.angle = 25.0
Â
No errors are found by the Extended Script Toolkit..BUT...it does not change anything. As Illustrator reference manual does not say this property is read only, I think I could write.

I am using beam/column calculator in the frame generator in inventor 2010 suite.I have a beam being used for a flight of stairs it is positioned 40 deg above the 'floor' or my xy plane in my assembly.I want to place a distributed load acting as if there were several people stading on the stairs at one time so in the direction of the z axis of my assembly.
The problem I am having is I try to change the angle of the distributed load but it only allows me to change the x and y components of the load.Â
a) change the angle of the laod in the Z directions
or
b) change the cordinates in beam itself so the x axis is along the length of the beam instead of the z axis.
I have tried adding a UCS to the beam part but it still wants to choose the length of the beam as the z axis.

I'm surprised that a lot of "application data" seems to be stored under the Program Files Folder. I thought this was a no-no? I'm particularly thinking of :
C:Program FilesCorelCorelDRAW Graphics Suite X6Custom Data
C:Program FilesCorelCorelDRAW Graphics Suite X6DrawCustomMediaStrokes
C:Program FilesCorelCorelDRAW Graphics Suite X6DrawGMS
C:Program FilesCorelCorelDRAW Graphics Suite X6DrawPresets
C:Program FilesCorelCorelDRAW Graphics Suite X6DrawWorkspace
C:Program FilesCorelCorelDRAW Graphics Suite X6Programs64Addons
Is there anyway to move the default locations, perhaps by a registry hack? I'd like to move it, at least to the AppData folder or even to another drive where it is easier to backup/make changes.
